With Thanks to BBC Worldwide

CONFIRMED: Fan concept for a Doctor Who LEGO® set will enter production in 2015.

The LEGO Group have announced that they will be producing a LEGO Doctor Who set. The concept for a Doctor Who set came from the LEGO® IDEAS website where fans can submit ideas for a set and vote for their favourite idea to be produced.

The Doctor Who concept from fan Andrew Clark received the 10,000 votes requisite for The LEGO Group to consider it for production.

A licensing agreement between BBC Worldwide and The LEGO Group will see the new set available in all of The LEGO Group’s key markets before the end of the year.

Andrew’s winning design featured a range of Doctors, companions and monsters across the show’s history, but fans will have to wait until later this year to discover what will be produced.

Marcus Arthur, MD of BBC Worldwide UK said, “Both Doctor Who and LEGO enjoy a particularly close relationship with their fans and I can’t wait to see what LEGO produce.”

Emma Owen, UK spokesperson for LEGO Ideas commented: “We’re extremely excited to announce that a Doctor Who and a WALL-E set will be released as our next LEGO Ideas fan based sets, congratulations to the designers Andrew Clark and Angus MacLane!

“After receiving over 10,000 votes from the online community and having gone through rigorous toy testing from our expert panel, these awesome sets are on track to be on shelves later this year. The final set designs, pricing and availability are being worked out as we speak, so watch this space for the final details!”

LEGO® Ideas is a crowdsourcing community where LEGO fans can submit their own ideas for new LEGO products, and vote for other members’ ideas. Members collect votes for their ideas online, and ideas that receive 10,000 votes have a chance of being selected to become part of the LEGO Group’s product portfolio.

To date, nine products have been released via the platform and three additional products will launch in 2015.

So is this confirming just one set or a whole new line of sets, because, as far i can see its only revealing a ‘one-of’ set.

We dont even know how well recieved this set will be . Im just saying it seems abit early for everyone to be getting their hopes for the next big thing in DW merchandise

we know its just one set involved in Lego ideas, but like everything else people can wish,

Cant see them going to the trouble of sorting out a licence just for one set with a few figures to be honest,

I think a few people would be rather upset if at the very least all The Doctors weren’t covered at some stage.

      February 7th, 2015 - 11:45pm

I’ll be annoyed if the set(s) only focus around Capaldi, or even worse – Tennant like the original idea creator intended. As long as I got a minifigure of each Doctor, and the TARDIS in the original idea, I’ll be happy really.

Are they going to ask for more people to design them sets like they did with this one or are they going to create a ‘Doctor Who’ theme with a number of sets designed by their own people?

    • Sam Richard Bentley

      February 8th, 2015 - 2:24pm

If there are going to be more DW LEGO sets they will be designed by LEGO themselves. I’m sure people will still be able to upload new designs, but they won’t be made.

There was a Back to the Future set, and Ghostbusters set released last year. People have since put forward other ideas, but none have been picked. I think this would be the same with Who.

Licensed figures are ALWAYS flesh tone, take it from someone who’s been collecting Lego for a long time! Plus lego is collaborative they want you to interact all your licensed stuff together. So with all the licensed figures flesh you could have The doctor team up with the crew of the millennium falcon or join up with the avengers or guardians of the galaxy or crash land in middle earth….the possiblities are endless.

They ditched the yellow skin or licensed themes in 2004 (Apart from The Simpsons, obviously), so don’t worry about that!

I don’t know how Lego work

Do they like sets ready to launch to coincide with release dates of films etc?

we seem to have to wait months for figures from the last series of Doctor Who

Do lego work like that or would they want any future sets on the shelf as soon as the series had aired so to speak?

    • The Twelfth Doctor

      February 7th, 2015 - 6:12pm

      February 7th, 2015 - 6:12pm

lego releases have always confused me, because even though avengers 2 doesn’t come out until end of april/start of may, the avengers 2 lego sets come out in march

    • Anonymous

      February 7th, 2015 - 9:56pm

LEGO would have it out before it aired given half the chance (the BBC wouldn’t agree of course, but at least the wait wouldn’t be long).

    • Callum Simmons

      February 8th, 2015 - 8:17am

Lego would have it out in time for the air-date of the new series. They wouldn’t miss that opportunity to raise awareness of the set especially given that they’ve finally secured the license after so much negotiation. Lego’s pipeline usually covers quite a few licenses per year for instance:

This year: January: Lego DC superheroes, Star Wars (mainly animated tv show rebels),

March: Lego Avengers Age Of Ultron,

      May: Lego Jurassic World,

June: Lego Marvel (animated stuff), More Lego Star wars (OT), More Dc superheroes, Scooby Doo,

      July: Lego Ant Man,

Then in October /November sort of time Star Wars The Force Awakens sets. So inbetween there that leaves August and September which is usually when they release Lego Ideas sets. Thats what happened with Ghostbusters and Back To The Future. I wouldn’t be surprised if we first saw Doctor Who at Comic Con San Diego in July as that was the forum for ghost busters. Big Bang Theory is reckoned to be unveiled at NY Toy Fair as thats been in the planning for a while but i’d say comic con is the best place to reveal Doctor Who and the most likely, then it’ll probably be up for purchase i’d say aug-sept. Probably sept thinking about it, just after the new series has started airing.

    • booboo

      February 8th, 2015 - 9:00am

the problem with that is the set would not be able to include any unseen monsters

    • Callum Simmons

      February 8th, 2015 - 10:22am

I wouldn’t imagine it would anyway. For their first set i’d imagine it would be familar monsters if any, like Daleks and Cybermen. I reckon they’ll do this ideas set. Then if that is a success they’ll do waves, first probably a tribute wave to all the doctors, then i’d imagine they’d move to doing a wave every year to coincide with each series is the demand called for it. TBH in the ideas set I don’t really expect more than

12th doctor, Clara, Tardis Exterior and maybe a couple of monsters.

or if they pushed the boat out: all 5 of the revival doctors, the 3 most recent tardis exteriors and 4 companions for each of the four doctors apart from hurt who never had an oscreen one. Maybe each doctor could come with accessories from their era:

War: Moment box, No more wall and Rifle

9: Big Dalek-buster gun, Bomb, Tardis Key

10: Timey Wimey Detector, Hand in jar, Flat hairpiece to change with the spiky one

11: Pandorica, Hairpiece with fez, Blue diary (river song’s)

12: Printed Black Board. Mini brick built tardis (miniturised), Black hand with spoon

Also 9/10’s tardis could maybe have a changeable piece printed with the bad-wolf graffiti.

This could also serve as a fitting tirbute to the 10 years since the show returned. Then if this sold well they could do sets similar for classics or they could do sets with a scenario from each doctor’s era and monsters from it:

E.g: First Doctor’s Tardis exterior, Totters lane junkyard detail, his three first companions, a dalek from his era and maybe one more monster from his era. Following a similar pattern from each era perhaps growing in size and price as they go along.

    • Sam Richard Bentley

      February 8th, 2015 - 11:22am

Someone who works for the BBC, his name is Pete and was talking on a Doctor Who Legacy gaming stream, said the set is coming out at the end of this year, probably in time for Christmas.

So if it were a set, and for now it will only be one set, based around Series 9, chances are everything will be okay.

    • Sam Richard Bentley

      February 8th, 2015 - 11:42am

But I think you’ll find the set should be LEGO’s reworking of the original creator’s set – woth the TARDIS exterior that opens up to be the walls of the interior, probably with Capaldi and Coleman instead of Tennant and Piper.

    • Callum Simmons

      February 8th, 2015 - 1:56pm

Most likely, but i was expecting it to be that honestly. I’m good as long as we get a doctor, a companion and tardis. I hope like his concept it comes with a couple of baddies too.

Personally i’d say figure wise it”ll most likely Be:

12th Doctor, Clara, Dalek, Cyberman (newest variation) and a Weeping angel. They could get a good price for that as 5 figures is usually a £30 set, though this might come closer to £25 and it would be affordable to everyone rather than going overboard with all 13 doctors to begin with (as nice as it would be to get all 13). Still Current Doctor, companion, monsters, tardis? Suits me will be nice to have something to interact with all the other themes. I think i’ll put the Tardis next to Bag-End or maybe on the death-star?

LEGO prefers staying stylized in their figure design by keeping it limited to printing a face onto their cylindrical head piece they’ve had since the beginning. Certainly saves them a bit of cash from having to mold special heads for each person, and it makes things a bit more simple and pleasing to look at (compared to some of Character Building’s later figures, for whom the faces may be accurate, started to look a bit creepy to me at such a small scale). If it’s detail you’re looking for, it’s interesting to know that they are upping the amount of facial detail compared to earlier years. Just look up how they’ve updated the faces of Han and Luke for their Star Wars sets for example.

they should do 3 waves of minifigures ( like the Simpsons),
    wave 1: the 13 doctors
wave 2: companion ( one for each doctor)
    wave 3: monsters

    3 big sets being:
The Doctor set (with TARDIS interior and all 13 Doctors)
The Enemies set (with Dalek ship and key figures from the alliance)
The companions set (with Coal Hill School and key companions from 1963-2015)

    2 smaller sets:
2010’s exterior (with the 11th Doctor, 12th Doctor, Amy, Rory, River, Clara)
2000’s exterior (with 9th Doctor, 10th Doctor, Rose, Martha, Donna, Jack)

    1 characters set:

The Lego minifigs have much more character to them and nearly every child will have played with Lego and everyone knows what it is. It’s famous around the world. • Callum Simmons

      February 6th, 2015 - 12:06pm

I have always preferred lego, costume and facial detail on CB figures has been poor really compared to what Lego do, capaldi has no wrinkles in CB but lego will print the face with an almost uncanny resemblence if they do one. I like the proportions and 3D nature of CB faces but none of the figure faces other than John Hurt’s CB figures look that close to the show, i mean strax’s head is the wrong colour, smith’s coat is too pink, Jenna’s face is too serious and awkward, plus the female figures have big gaps inbetween their neck and head as the hair forces it up. Matt’s tweed never had any tweed printing whereas with lego it would, matt’s face had no resemblence to real life and chris ecclestone’s one looked oriental with those weird slit eyes. The monsters were all pretty good but the Human figures lacked in many departments. Lego’s printing is far superior to CB’s and doesn’t rub off in time, plus the heads can be printed with two expressions allowing a more accurate range of emotions. I mean if you want to see how accurate and detailed lego can go with moulding and printing just look at the Star Lord figure from Guardians of the galaxy. Plus at least the lego will actually stay together. I mean to see lego’s prowess check out some recent examples:

      http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-esn3t92B78Y/U7vrEI0UOQI/AAAAAAAACII/upXW2WUYz9k/s1600/Star-Lord+Minifigure.png

I mean just those examples are almost 100 percent accurate representations of their moviecounterparts, i mean the facial resemblance alone is impressive and the costume printing is without equal.

Imagine with moulding and printing expretise like that what they could do with the doctors, companions, monsters, not to mention the sets which would be stunning.

It’ll be interesting to see it they’ll come out with a one-off set, or if they’ll make it a full range

I’m sure they will do something involving all the Doctors and key companions and monsters either now or in the future

Does this push up or decrease the value of the character building super rares or does it not effect it at all ????

No effect whatsoever. At least I wouldn’t think so. CB was never really in the running as a contender to lego so…

R.I.P. Character Building, you will be missed sort of. Also it’ll be interesting to see how LEGO make the Daleks.

They, if even included in the set, won’t look to different from the cb Daleks probably.
