New 3.75″ Figures and playsets in 2013 – Poll

New 3.75″ Scale Action Figures and playsets in 2013

In a recent interview for www.toysnplaythings.co.uk, Character along with several other companies have talked about their future plans for Doctor Who Products.

You can read all the interviews and stories via www.toysnplaythings.co.uk magazine or click on the image below.

One quote however appears to give us some major news on new figures and sets…

What exciting new products will you have coming out in future?

“Our product range will be diverse and innovative, in addition to the figures and playsets that have been released, Autumn 2012 will see the first Doctor Who App-related toy in which you connect your smartphone to a physical device enabling kids to digitally battle Daleks, Cybermen and Angels as they appear in their actual location on screen via augmented reality. We have huge expectations from an exciting new toy range for 2013 with new scale action figures, playsets and role play toys. Construction will continue to grow with the introduction of Series three micro-figures and all new playsets based on the upcoming episodes.”

The current 5 inch figure range

  • The Classic series figure range will stay the same scale, 5 inches.
  • No more new series figures will be made in the 5 inch range.
  • Rory was the final new series figure to be made for the 5 inch scale range, although there may be re-releases (Like the B&M Dalek and Cybermen sets).

The new 3.75 inch figure range

  • The new scale range will be 3.75 inches which is industry standard. This means the toys will be more compatible with other ranges.
  • There are no plans to release already existing figures in the new scale range. (Excluding Daleks and Weeping angels seen in series 7)
  • Photos of the range will not be released until next year.
  • There is a possibility stands if costs allow but priority will be given to the figures.
  • There will be a range of four playsets.

Above is what we know so far thanks to Alasdair Dewar.

Can’t believe they are still going through with making the S7 figures 3.75inch even with all the outcry of the fans that don’t want this to happen. They obviously don’t care what the fans want who are the ones that keep them in business.

I think the playsets should be from the first half of the season, and they could do a second wave from part 2:
*11th Doctor electronic TARDIS playset w/Doctor, Amy, Rory, and TARDIS exterior
*Dalek Asylum set w/Dead Planet Dalek, Special Weapons Dalek, damaged bronze Dalek, and Dalek Drone
*Silurian Ark set w/Triceratops, Raptor, Solomon, and Robot
*Winter Quay set w/River, 2x Weeping Angels, and cherubs
And second wave should include new TARDIS w/Doctor in new costume, Clara, Strax, and Vastra

      HELL YES 😀

But it would be a waste of money since it won’t be for the 5inch figures, but would probably be suited to the old Dapol figures of the 80’s and 90’s.

Fair enough that they want to “scale them back to be compatible with other toys”, but they will look out of place when posed with the existing range.

And we still need to see toys from the Tennant era, such as the Abzorballof!

This always happens with toy companies. The creators think they’re geniuses when they bring something out, but then nobody buys them. They’re bound to bring back the 5 inch range after alkyl the complaints.

I very much doubt go back to 5″ figures for the new series, if the 3.75″ line doesn’t work you might not get anything at all

    • John

      January 13th, 2013 - 7:35pm

Having collected the 5″ figures since back in 2005, I am so frustrated at this downsizing (costcutting?) move, that I have just sent a message to the manufacturer to let tham know that are about to lose one previously loyal customer/fan.
Okay… big deal! But if more people sent more messages, and stopped buying their product, lining their pockets and keeping them in business perhaps something would change for the better. Have a voice, and tell them if you are not happy.
I’ve told them they can keep their “G I Joes.”
      I won’t be buying them.

    • Andrew I

      January 13th, 2013 - 7:48pm

I don’t think they’re changing just for the hell of it, there must be lots of cost involved too. If, in the current economic climate they’re not able to continue with the 5 inch range, then downsizing is better than nothing at all. Size isn’t everything! 🙂 the products will, I’m sure, reflect a quality brand still.

Well, i heard that this is only for the new series, any fans of the classics? Good. ‘Cos Character did announce that they are keeping 5″ figures for the classics. 🙂

    • booboo

      January 25th, 2013 - 7:50am

classic will stay 5″ and it possible already manufactured 5″ could be re-released in other variants such as the toys r us sets

  • Brother of the Daleks

    January 3rd, 2013 - 6:12pm

I’ll wait and see the prototype images, maybe buy a figure or two before I make my final decision. It would also depend on the lineup, for example, if they didn’t release a modifed Paradigm Dalek from Asylum of the Daleks, I probably wouldn’t buy them.

I have collected nearly every figure Character has produced in 5″ scale. ( even more challenging here in America!). I will simply have to stop and not purchase in the smaller size.
The downsize is certainly profitable using less material and I’ll presume nearly the same price!
This size scale though will allow the kiddies to have their Hasbro Darth Vaders’ and Iroman figures beat up on the Doctor!!

I agree with Supe the 5ich figure were better everyone has got a HUGE collection of these and now these 3.75inch figures are pointless because everyone who has collected the 5inch will have re-start their collection from scratch its pointless I just hope they do 2 variations 1 in 5inch and another in 3.75

    • Metal web

  • Hellbelly

I know a lot of people seem upset about the change but it basically comes down to this; It’s either the 3.75in. figures or NO FIGURES.
    Which would you prefer.

      No, the choice is this:

Stay with 5″ line, keep getting 5″ classics.

Or start getting these 3 inch ones which may or may not be good detail/good choice of characters and if that does well they will only drag the classic line down to 3 inch aswell and EVERYTHING WILL BE LOST 🙁

    • morlu

      December 30th, 2012 - 3:05pm

Mcgann is right. Keep buying the classic 5″ figures. Vote with your pounds.
What is the point starting a new collection of figures in a new size.

      I REALLY HOPE THEY DO ! ❗

I will not give up on the 5″ line.

  • CG

    December 17th, 2012 - 10:44am

I groaned when they released the character building figures as I already collected the micro-universe and normal 5″ figs. I’m sure when they come out and we wait a while we will all get over it and maybe even but some and collect them.

I will only do that if

      1. the figures are decent

      2. they make something a sane person would actually want, not some rubbish. Seriously, does anyone even remember who uncle is ?! ❗

So if they make a Doctor, with good detail (some stripes on his grey striped shirt and maybe the braces) not to mention accurate hair I will buy.

If they make a Doctor with a sonic screwdriver CLOSED and one that has it OPEN then I will buy.If they just make an inaccurate Doctor with only the open sonic then forget it. ❗

I just hope that when this line fails they will not drag the 5″ classic line down with them.

And I agree, with the 50th anniversary coming up Character would have made tonnes of money with 5″ figures, but no.

No point in making a T-rex because it was asleep.

They probably won’t make any of these figures, they will make 1 million Daleks, probably a rubbish innaccurate Doctor, some random character who nobody would want as a figure (the guy with the glasses in Power of Three) and afew variants of Dalek-puppets.

I would hate to be right, but this is a sad likeliness ! ❗

    • Hellbelly

      December 21st, 2012 - 9:00am

It’s not a matter of making better figures and getting them back in stores. The retailers that matter for a mass market toy line (i.e. supermarkets) just aren’t interested anymore. That’s why the last few waves where mostly re-releases and minor tweaks. Less interest from retailers means smaller budget for each wave means sacrifices have to be made.
All toy lines eventually peter out and need something to revitalise them.
This is a chance to get Doctor Who action figures back at mainstream retail in a big way in time for the 50th anniversary.
