New 3.75″ Figures and playsets in 2013 – Poll

New 3.75″ Scale Action Figures and playsets in 2013

In a recent interview for www.toysnplaythings.co.uk, Character along with several other companies have talked about their future plans for Doctor Who Products.

You can read all the interviews and stories via www.toysnplaythings.co.uk magazine or click on the image below.

One quote however appears to give us some major news on new figures and sets…

What exciting new products will you have coming out in future?

“Our product range will be diverse and innovative, in addition to the figures and playsets that have been released, Autumn 2012 will see the first Doctor Who App-related toy in which you connect your smartphone to a physical device enabling kids to digitally battle Daleks, Cybermen and Angels as they appear in their actual location on screen via augmented reality. We have huge expectations from an exciting new toy range for 2013 with new scale action figures, playsets and role play toys. Construction will continue to grow with the introduction of Series three micro-figures and all new playsets based on the upcoming episodes.”

The current 5 inch figure range

  • The Classic series figure range will stay the same scale, 5 inches.
  • No more new series figures will be made in the 5 inch range.
  • Rory was the final new series figure to be made for the 5 inch scale range, although there may be re-releases (Like the B&M Dalek and Cybermen sets).

The new 3.75 inch figure range

  • The new scale range will be 3.75 inches which is industry standard. This means the toys will be more compatible with other ranges.
  • There are no plans to release already existing figures in the new scale range. (Excluding Daleks and Weeping angels seen in series 7)
  • Photos of the range will not be released until next year.
  • There is a possibility stands if costs allow but priority will be given to the figures.
  • There will be a range of four playsets.

Above is what we know so far thanks to Alasdair Dewar.

No! I’ve been collecting five-inch for years. Also, classic is still five-inch? Really? So this means we can’t have a 12 Doctors figure adventure because the 12th doctor won’t be the same scale.

Also, these are a rip-off of Skylanders. Doctor Who isn’t supposed to rip off of stuff. And Skylanders? Really? I hate Skylanders.

Still i think this is an unwise move they’ve made bussiness wise because next years the 50th anniversary ,so basically more merch would have been bought by other stores and buyers who plan to sell it on the 5inch figs would have been a huge selling point but nope not character

They should have been 3.75″ to begin with.
1:18 is the industry standard. It will allow much better playsets and vehicles, plus the figures look much better with better articulation and detail. 5″ figures are useless. I never bought a single figure from the Dr Who line because of the scale.

I agree with Dark Horse I collect only 1:18 scale figures and as much as I love Doctor Who I never purchased any figures because of the ridiculous scale that doesn’t really match anything else I own. Very excited about this news as I will now have Doctor Who figures to go with my Star Wars Collection and potential Star Trek figures also coming out next year. I can see why previous collectors would be upset but to 1:18 scale collectors this is the best news one could possibly ask for.

I know, that’s the harsh reality of the viewers now, slowly decrease, and then the shows get axed, but hopefully Doctor Who will keep going strong, and we will at least get another doctor, or maybe two, but then I don’t really see anything happening after that, it will be out the public eye and eventually get taken off TV for a second time, and possibly even the last time!

I don’t mind the new figure height, in fact, I’d gladly switch over as long as they were cheaper, but cancelling the 5-inch line (Except for Classics) is harsh.

the problem is it takes about 6 months from start to finish so in that time people could change their minds or loose interest – also the a big majority of new series figures are purchased by “casual” buyers as “toys”.

I would actually like an army of mini Dalek Drones (2012 Version).
Probably with other figures in an Asylum of the Daleks Set:
Darla, Dalek Strategist, The Doctor, Oswin, and a Asylum Dalek.

    • Mels

      October 23rd, 2012 - 9:51am

Actually Daleks scale down in size really well, since there are no facial features and fiddly details like that to worry about. Product Enterprise used to make some mini daleks that were really fantastic (although they were also probably more expensive). And of course Dapol used a smaller scale.

Provided they are made well, Daleks will probably be some of the nicer figures from the smaller range – and we *may* get a larger variety of them.

    • Dalek Sec

      October 24th, 2012 - 10:00am

Micro Talking Daleks were very detailed, to the point of looking almost perfect to the actual thing, and at the time were more detailed than character options Daleks.

I know my local stores are having trouble shifting them – they’re still trying to get rid of the Pandorica and Season 5 figures. Because they can’t shift those, they havn’t gotten any of the new ones in.

Daleks sell well, the Doctor sells well. But Smilers and multiple versions of Uncle (as examples) do not sell as well and sit on the shelves taking up space. DW figures are sold in case lots, so shops can’t pick and choose which figures they want – they have to get all or none. (So they get none).

If this line fails there may be no more Doctor Who figures in the future. The 5 inch series has ended for the new series (for now at least), the 3.75 range is probably the last chance.

CO should look on this website and see how many people disapprove of the scale change and then decide if it was in fact a good idea or a huge mistake

    • Mels

      October 19th, 2012 - 5:04am

From what I gather, CO were not making money from the 5 inch line, so it would be a mistake to continue hobbling along with them.

If the smaller scale is successful, there will be more money to invest in a wider range of figures and merchandise – so I hope for all our sakes that the new line works well.

If not, mass-produced DW figures will probably end, unless another company picks up the licence.
