Materialising 30th May 2023 – The Unoffical Dr Who annual 1997

Materialising 30th May 2023 – The unoffical Dr Who annual 1997

Over the past few years Terraqueous Distributors have been releasing annuals based on the classic series of Doctor Who.

With the usual mix of both unofficial and official content, which began when Terraqueous were trusted with the official inclusion of Sil – courtesy of Reeltime Pictures, for their 1987 annual.

Then for the 1989 annual, Mags and Captain Cook appeared in an exclusive prequel to the Greatest Show in the Galaxy – courtesy of their creator Stephen Wyatt. The 1989 annual also featured a crossover into the Beano comic universe, with a special strip written by Beano editor and brought to life by regular Beano artist Shannon Gallant.

Now for the 1997 annual, with the kind permission of Gary Russell, the original Tardis crew of the Eighth Doctor – Stacy Townsend and Ice Warrior Ssard, appear as the resident companions throughout the annual.

(Stacy and Ssard originally appeared in the weekly Radio Times comic strip which ran from June 1996 to March 1997).

So join the Eighth Doctor, with his companions Stacy and Ssard, for a whole new set of adventures that take them to far off planets, where they encounter villains, aliens, shape shifting sand, dangerous doppelgangers, pit their wits against the Tardis’ built in self-defense systems. And visit 1950’s India-while they go shopping for tea?

The annual features the usual mix of great stories, puzzles and features, as well as an foreword by Stacy and Ssard’s creator, Gary Russell. And an afterword by the original artist of the Radio Times comic strips, Lee Sullivan.

The 1997 annual not only has one cover, but three to choose from. As well as the main cover with artwork from Mark Worgan, there are two more additional collectors covers from artists Kris Merola, and Carolyn Edwards. These two collectors covers are only available to those who donate to the charity ‘Refuge’.

Detailed information can be found on the Terraqueous Distributors facebook page.

The annual comes in at an impressive 177 pages, and is a not-for-profit publication, and none of the money paid by purchasers goes to the publisher or to any of the contributors.

Will there be a purchase link (as well as a donation link) for those of us allergic to Facebook?

I can’t wait until the 30th this looks great. I would usually complain about variant covers and the cost of double dipping, but this looks so impressive and what a great charity too!

I’m just going to have to get all the covers. one annual will go on the shelf with my annual collection. and I will probably frame and mount the other two as artwork on the wall.

Does anyone know if there are still plans to re-release the 87 and 89 annuals?

I believe that they have said they’ll do print to order for the previous ones so that they don’t become goldmines for scalpers.

Is the Master annual included in that as well?

As I say, I believe that all previous ones would become print to order, but I don’t have any insider knowledge. I’m just going off memory.

They do have a facebook page linked above, so that may be the best place to ask.

Gonna have to get this one as it’s by birth year. How much are these normally?

Could be around £30. Might be more due to rising costs but generally there are vouchers for lulu, the publication platform, which knocks down the price.

I can just make out the small text on one of the images that says Tobias Vaughn is in this book too.

I might just do the multiple covers, if budget allows. I can barely wait for this!
