THE DOCTOR WHO ART of ANDREW SKILLETER

The Ultimate Collection Book 2 of a Trilogy Foreword by Marcus Hearn, Editor DWM

Target Books ~ BBC VHS ~ New Adventures ~ Radio Times The Five Doctors ~ Official Doctor Who Calendar ~ Who Dares Publishing ~ Doctor Who Magazine ~ Cybermen Book ~ BBC USA Exhibition and more…

Andrew Skilleter’s Doctor Who art spans over four decades from 1979 to 2023.

ILLUMINART 2 The Doctor Who Art of Andrew Skilleter, follows the critically acclaimed Book 1 and the sell-out success of his 2021 Dalek art book, Exterminart! and continues to show-case the work from a career of over fifty years in the publishing industry.

This second volume of the Trilogy covers even more of his Doctor Who art – the Target and BBC VHS classic covers, poster prints, calendar art and much more – but also unpublished and unseen artworks. He shares sketches, preliminary drawings, in-progress images accompanied by com-mentaries from himself and fans giving an intimate insight into the process of his art.

Every picture tells a story and Andrew has quite a few to tell!

Andrew comments: “Welcome to Book 2 of the ILLUMINART Trilogy! The book design is completed and I think it looks better than ever. Copies will be ready to send ASAP in September. I’m pleased to feature an ambitious newly commissioned artwork along with the next set of Target and BBC VHS covers, poster prints, calendar pieces and more plus some unseen/unpublished art! ILLUMINART 2 has striking design (as Book 1 by Robert Hammond) and the excellent print quality of Book 1 will be maintained. It’s in my DNA to deliver high quality on all fronts.”

Andrew Skilleter’s Doctor Who art dominated the 1980s and continued into the 1990s. It included over forty covers for the Target Books Doctor Who novelisations, the much loved Who Dares Poster Prints, the official Doctor Who calendars, the legendary Cybermen book with Cyber Leader David Banks, the iconic Radio Times The Five Doctors cover, Doctor Who BBC VHS covers and the Doctor Who The New Adventures covers. His artwork has previously been collected in Blacklight, celebrating 15 years of his Doctor Who art published by Virgin,1995 and in the collection of his Dalek art, Exterminart! 2021. Outside of Doctor Who Andrew has also had a varied career as a versatile illustrator.

I got a big nostalgia rush from the first volume, which is fantastically designed/printed. It sits very nicely on my shelf alongside Kklak!, Timeframe and David Howe’s Target book.

Lack of money and shelf space mean I have to be very selective with what I buy these days.

But I preordered volume 2 straightaway.

Same here, I’m much more selective these days but this is a must. Did you buy David howe’s book about the virgin era? It complimented the target book wonderfully.

I was sure I had the first one, but on checking my bookshelves it appears I do not. This is an oversight that I must rectify.

Pearson was good but he was too reliant on photographs. Most of his art is just traced photographs which is fine. Look at the cover for romance of crime. Perfect images but all photos that he then drew. The plotters features perfect doctor and companion images, but the art of the non real character (ie a generic gunpowder plotter) is very poor. Pearson’s art is good and a book would be welcome but he admitted himself he wasn’t an instinctive artist and needed photos to do the characters correctly

Don’t get me wrong I like his artwork but he essentially traces photographs so his art is accurate but not inspired.

Ah but covers like Alistair’s version of Terror of the Zygons are virtually unbeatable. Smashing art.

More money! This is turning into an expensive anniversary book year. 5 target books. 2 mythological books. Evil of the daleks. 6 decade books. Christmas short story collection. Annual. Unofficial annual. The latest cushing charity novel. And now this. Can’t wait for all of them!
