Doctor Who 5.5″ Warriors of the Deep Figure Set

Now available to order from www.forbiddenplanet.com

Warriors of the Deep (1984), a new 3-piece set offers a once only chance to collect these iconic Silurian figures

Character Options has today revealed the next instalment of Doctor Who collectors’ sets, available exclusively online on the Character Options website.

The new Warriors of the Deep (1984) set includes the Three Command Silurian crew of Ichthar, Tarpok and Scibus as seen in the season twenty-one episode of the same name. Perfect for all Doctor Who fans and collectors, the set comes beautifully displayed in a special presentation pack with diorama insert and Doctor Who heritage packaging. These figures will only ever be available this one time only, and offers the perfect opportunity for fans to add to their collections.

The Silurians

Psionosauropodomorpha, Homo Reptilia or more simply Silurians are a species of highly intelligent reptiles with psionic abilities who inhabited the planet Earth millions of years before humans. In order to outlive the catastrophe that destroyed the dinosaurs, they descended into underground hibernation shelters, but were never revived and now many pockets of survivors lie dormant within the planet. The Silurians have attempted to re-take the planet Earth on several occasions but have always been defeated by either human weapons or by the Doctor.

Setting the scene

In the Warriors of the Deep episode, we travel to Earth year 2084. Two power blocs control the planet. One of them has an underwater base called Sea Base 4 operating deep in the ocean and strategically positioned to control nuclear weapons aimed at its opponents.

Evading missile fire in space, the TARDIS lands on Sea Base 4 in the middle of a practice missile run. The TARDIS crew are soon detected and alarms are triggered whereupon the Doctor as a distraction programs the base’s reactor to overload in an attempt to avoid capture. This fails however, and the time travellers are detained.

We soon learn the Silurians have located and revived a group of Sea Devil Warriors from deep hibernation and together they attack the base. The Silurians dispatch the Myrka, a large marine creature, to break through the outer airlocks. After a fierce battle the Doctor surmising an aversion to bright light, kills it using a rigged up ultra-violet projector. The Silurians and Sea Devils take control of the base.

After much bloodshed, the Doctor confronts the Silurian Ichthar about the death toll whereupon the he scornfully reveals it’s irrelevant as his warriors intend to destroy mankind by triggering a global nuclear war. They connect a ‘manipulator’ to the computer systems and while distracted, the Doctor escapes and discovers cylinders of hexachromite gas, which is utterly lethal to all sea life.

Unable to find another option the gas is fed into the ventilation system. The Silurians and Sea Devil warriors collapse and the Doctor tries to stop the missiles by linking himself into the computer and succeeds.

Al Dewar, Character Options’ Creative Director, added his own personal thoughts on the release of this new exclusive and the episode from which they are created.

‘I think it’s safe to say that 1984’s story Warriors of the Deep brought back a much underused yet very fondly remembered Doctor Who foe .. The Silurian’s. I personally remember this story with great fondness; partly this was because from the start I was trying to guess who the protagonists were as the mysterious submarine closed in on the Sea Base. And then later because of the great rework of the original design for this Classic Monster.

The Silurian costume design is excellent and I think created quite a different look with the updated carapace body added. The Silurian’s in this story are like the Silurian’s and Sea Devils of old, they are not the baddies and neither are they alien. They are simply trying to survive and in the story it’s the humans who appear less than squeaky clean. Like many really good Doctor Who stories there are no winners at the end of Warriors…just survivors. It’s a really cracking adventure with the 5th Doctor with a kind of feeling of downbeat inevitability which I really like.

Three Silurians in the set might seem an odd choice but for me this Story is all about “Three” We have the three races, humans, Silurians and the Sea Devils. We have Ichthar, the last of the original Silurian Triad. The three Silurian characters themselves are the command crew of the ratty old sub and all we see of the once proud race. Obviously we have the Silurian’s own third eye though this time used as a speech unit and not as a psionic weapon. Therefore the set we’ve brought together works perfectly as we have two Silurians with the black unlit eye and the slight variation in body deco on these means they are all slightly different. I absolutely love this figure and think it’s one of the best we’ve done and a great addition to the Classic line up.”

Yes, I think she did a great deal of Harm over the years to British Television, basically she was a Dictatorship. She used to decide what people could and couldn’t watch.
No ONE person should have that power anywhere in the world, we know through History were that leads.

She was a moral crusader but her campaign came across as patronising, at times seemingly trying to turn us into a nanny state. Very overprotective but she wasn,t always effective at getting things removed. Some of what she had to say did resonate with broadcasters and I remember all those cut and edited programmes and movies in the 1980s+ which really used to irk me. Actually i would say though the PC agenda has worsened to the point where people can say nothing. Now we get those endless overprotective announcements ( even after Watershed) and their is too much sycophancy, backscratching and faux outpourings going on that makes a lot of telly now unwatchable and thats before you even go online.

True ergon, I know Mary was abit of a pain, but since she went (Around 2000, I think it was) things havnt really improved.
And as you say in some respects are even worse. And your certainly right about not being able to say a thing.
I don’t think anyone is allowed an opinion anymore at the risk of being jailed.
      Funny old World.

To be fair the UK is now similar to South Africa, 40 or 50 years ago where poor Nelson Mandela was jailed for “Life” for just speaking his mind.

This is an amazing set, i hope they release a similar 3 pack of the wheel, 2013, 2017 mondasian and 2020 cybermen as well as a triple pack of 1970 silurians and perhaps one day a yeti and some 2013 zygons and ice warriors

Superb! No second thoughts here, instantly ordered.

Agree with some comments, a Sea Devil or Tegan would’ve been nice. But if this is how CO can keep costs viable, by producing a set of 3 nearly the same figures, then I’m more than happy if they are such classics as these.

Maybe opens the door for tweaks in later set (Liz and Silurian in B&M sets maybe?) and certainly shows that CO can produce some belters in the online range. Here’s hoping for some more classic, army builder style, sets like these!

You are so right Tim. This works so well as there were 3 in the story, as there were 2 androids in the earthshock set. So they could do say a foamasi double and have one nicely wrapped up in a 3 pack. It would save someone like coleman a lot of trouble making one.

      February 15th, 2022 - 10:39am

Potentially they might do a follow up with the Sea Devils in the future. Especially that there were more than 3 in the episode as well

    • TimelordTim

      February 15th, 2022 - 10:43am

Sea Devils would be great, Foamasi a nice choice as well. I’d really like to see the Cheetah People from Survival myself. Plenty of scope to have 3 of them, or even an Ainley! Probably not feasible for the multitude of colours and more complex sculpting compared to the Silurians though.

    • Coleman

      February 15th, 2022 - 12:24pm

Tim aren’t you Tempted by a Cheetah Person from Eaglemoss?

    • TimelordTim

      February 15th, 2022 - 1:47pm

No Coleman, not at the moment. I have the Cheetah People from Harlequin painted and that’s enough for me unless CO do one.

There are some I’d only want as painting models (Harlequin or Warlord), some only from CO and a few from Eaglemoss. Some characters I’d get a mixture from each. Can’t really say why I choose certain styles for certain characters. But the Cheetah People are an example of painting models are good enough, but CO ones would be impossible to pass up, even though I can happily pass on the Eaglemoss ones.

Did this consist of new retooling? How did they keep the cost down for a brand new figure like this? and is it feasible we will get a consistant run of all new classics from now on without resorting to same bodies? Also these stand a better chance of selling out more quickly this way with occasional limited runs. i,d like that yeti next.

    • Coleman

      February 15th, 2022 - 10:43am

Yeah ergon, totally new Sculpt. Would have cost CO alot to Tool, but I suppose they can do this by making it an online Exclusive and charging more for it. They couldn’t do it for the B&M “Budget sets”, they wouldnt make enough profit.
Hope it sells well then maybe we could get a couple of these sets per year.
Come on Foamasi, Terileptil Android, Menoptera, Dafodil Auton, Destroyer, Female Eldrad, Servo Robot, Yeti, Dominator, Quark, Jamie, Etc.
      Get in you beauties.

    • the ergon

      February 15th, 2022 - 10:48am

Your making me salivate thinking of all those coleman. Anything they can replicate to fill the set out, maybe add the odd accessories. I wouldn,t mind paying out. i was also thinking of Sharaz jek with a couple of those androids but we could still get those in the Band m line.

    • TimelordTim

      February 15th, 2022 - 10:59am

There’s so many that any of those would be amazing Coleman, certainly makes us hope when they release sets like this one!

Jamie is the one that will really be great, and if he were alongside a Yeti, Dominator duo or Quark duo then all the better.

I’ve been surprised Sharez Jek hasn’t had a B&M release yet Ergon, simple body and colour palette, can go alongside Peri, 5th (preferably not but they do have to cut costs) or Androids for a “story” set. Or even alongside Ainley Master and a partial new sculpt figure (not sure what would be most likely in budget line) in an “enemies of 5th” set.

    • TimelordTim

      February 15th, 2022 - 11:03am

Imagine the next B&M line were 5th themed as well:

“Friends” set – Tegan, Nyssa, Adric
“Enemies” set – Ainley Master, Sharez Jek, Black Guardian

They would fly off the shelves!

    • Coleman

      February 15th, 2022 - 11:08am

He’ll guys, yes as ergon says Sharaz Jek is perfectly doable in the Budget line. I didn’t mention companions on purpose either such as Barbara, Susan, Zoe, Polly, Tegan, Nyssa, Adric and Turlough because I do expect these to turn up in the B&M Budget sets eventually as they can be made with Existing tooling and New Head Sculpts
Just thinking of Characters for the Online Exclusives that would need “Extensive” Tooling.

    • Coleman

      February 15th, 2022 - 11:49am

Character Options does have to be Carefull with these B&M sets, like you say Tim a “Friend’s” and a “Enemies” set would be great and indeed fly of the shelves as their mainly new figures.
But I also understand CO having to save costs in the Budget line also.
They have to be careful though not to have too many repacked figures that are lacklustre in these sets because I can actually see the line stalling if they go down this route and eventually it will end.
It’s a very fine balance between profit and giving fans what they want. (Not Repacks).

    • TimelordTim

      February 15th, 2022 - 1:54pm

I agree Coleman, it’s a fine balance they have to make and it would’ve been difficult in the situation over the past 2 years whilst public interest may have been waning a bit as well.

I do hope they have the scope to return to the 2020 level of development in the B&M sets though, bringing more classic companions on particular. I think the lower variety in 2021 was potentially cost cutting at the development stage during lockdowns. Time will tell what they can produce in the range this year.

    • the ergon

      February 15th, 2022 - 2:32pm

1 or 2 previously existing figures and the odd exclusive in each set should keep fans coming back. I hope they do a new head and rerelease that Krynoid and axon creature.

    • Coleman

      February 15th, 2022 - 5:14pm

Yes ergon, in the budget line just keep throwing one Exclusive in every three pack, so people always have something to “chase”.
I don’t personally expect anymore as it is a budget line after all.

Daleks and TARDISes sell fast, but a triple pack of Silurians from a not-particularly popular story? Almost impossible to call how popular this will be.

I do think these more obscure figures/designs sell better than the usual old dross. Daleks and Cybermen are all well and good, but we’d all buy a Chumblie or a Tractator in a flash.

Agreed, I was actually surprised at the price for what it is. I’m not too interested in this story, but would’ve got it if it was £25 or if there was more variety. Not that that’s a bad thing, people want classic Silurians, so it’s really great that people have got them with an army builder and are excited about this. Just, for me personally, if I’m not interested in one I’m not interested in three unfortunately. Not for *that* much anyway.
