Doctor Who Tom Baker Complete Season Three ( USA )

Available to order in the USA from www.amazon.com #ad

In 1976, Doctor Who took a dramatic new turn, electrifying audiences with changes in format, companion and appearance of the TARDIS. Season 14 saw the departure of the Doctor’s long-term companion Sarah Jane Smith, and the introduction of Leela. The season contains some of Tom Baker’s most iconic serials, with intrepid investigations in Victorian London, deadly robots in a murderous whodunit, a return to the Doctor’s homeworld, and one of the saddest goodbyes in Doctor Who history.

Just a short message to reassure anyone interested in purchasing the U.S release of Tom Baker Season Three (or season 14), that it is indeed region free. I have purchased this Blu-ray and can confirm it works perfectly.

I have a technical clarification to ask of these classic Doctor Who Collection season sets, given the various ways the new series has been previously handled on blu ray. Of course, I ask this of anyone who knows for sure…

Are the Blu Ray discs in this US set fully mastered for 1080p24?

Are the Blu Ray discs in the UK limited edition fully mastered for 1080i50?

In other words are there two separate mastered assets, or is one of the releases a conversion from a single asset?

I think it’s common knowledge that many of the new series UK Blu Ray sets used a single 1080p24 asset that was standards converted for UK 1080i50 releases resulting in ‘speed up’ and the audio had to be pitch corrected.

And I believe this was done because the vast majority of US televisions can only handle 60Hz or 24p frame rates – given the US was considered the larger market therefore this was the preference to save costs to prepare only a single master asset.

Therefore, does anyone know for sure that these ‘The Collection’ sets are the true ‘original’ run time in the UK sets, as well as being separately mastered for the US TV handling needs?

    Thank you

The US sets are 1080i60 I believe, They definitely aren’t 1080p.

The U.K sets aren’t 1080p either, they’re 1080i/50. It’s about frame rates/fields. The sets use the existing DVD masters, aditional work is carried out and and the run times may be a few frames longer because of this.

It would make sense to include updated ‘loose cannon’ type photo reconstructions of the missing episodes/stories for the season 1 – 6 boxsets. Where there is animation, include them as well as including a photo reconstruction.

I wonder how they’re going to market season 4 and season 21.

Patrick Troughton Season One (with two additional William Hartnell stories). Peter Davison Season Three (with one additional Colin Baker story).

It’s obvious how they’re going to market them. And Twin Dilemma won’t move to S22 and Smugglers/Tenth Planet won’t move to S3. It’s not possible.

Not yet. We know it’s happening (Janet/Peter/Sarah mentioned it on stage, and Mark Strickson has mentioned doing recording in Amsterdam for documentaries), but we really don’t know when it’ll be out, if it’s even this year. It could be the next one, but as multiple sets get worked on at the same time, it’s possible we’ll have another set to come out beforehand. (The heavily rumoured ones are Season 2, 6, or 11, but there really isn’t much evidence to indicate those).

I’m hoping for either season 1, 2, or 11 if they’re planning to leave space for animations later down the line or for discs with any available telesnap versions or what have you. I’m hoping these are more likely considering discussions I’ve seen of Marco Polo and some other historicals costing too much to animate and thus not taking top priority. I’d rather have complete collections that are going to get animated episodes to fill in gaps be waited on to have all episodes available in either format (animated or the actual video episodes).

Only 7 discs in that version, whilst the UK version has 8. So what will be missing?

Nothing is missing as it’s actually an 8 disc release. The cover got the disc count wrong. Same thing happened with the McCoy season 3 set. Listed as a 5 disc on the box art but actually ended up being 7 discs.

These are the Blu-ray releases I get. So far, all the U.S releases I’ve purchased have been region free. Plus whilst the cardboard U.K packaging looks better, I prefer the official plastic Blu-ray packaging of the U.S releases.

ARE they actually region free? If so, then I’d definitely venture into buying some of the sets I think of as “lesser” Doctor Who seasons (which made me skip their Limited releases). There’s always a few decent episode in each season.

Yep. All of the releases so far up to McCoy season 3 (season 26 in the U.K) have been region free. I know. As I have a blu-ray player which isn’t multi-region that plays them.

If we do get an announcement soon of more collector’s copies then I may have to get this just so I have it in some form.
