Doctor Who The Underwater Menace DVD

Available to order from www.amazon.co.uk

BBC Studios continues to offer Doctor Who fans the opportunity to extend their at home collection by announcing the latest release Doctor Who: The Underwater Menace on DVD and Blu-Ray. The two-disc box set contains the fourth series story as well as special features. This classic series stars the second Doctor Patrick Troughton and co-stars Anneke Wills as Polly, Michael Craze as Ben and Frazer Hines as Jamie McCrimmon.

The original 1967 master recordings of all except episodes two and three of The Underwater Menace were lost soon after the programme’s original transmission. However, audio-only recordings of the missing two episodes have survived and have been used to create a brand new fully animated presentation of this lost classic.

This story sees these characters navigate through their adventures in the underwater city of Atlantis where they meet with Professor Zaroff, who plots to destroy the Earth by draining the oceans. Fans can expect a super jam-packed series bursting with unseen exclusive content. All episodes have been animated in colour and black and white whilst including original film elements.

DISC ONE (Main Feature)

  • Episodes 1-4 – Animation – Colour
  • Episodes 1-4 – Animation – Black and White

DISC TWO (Special Features)

  • Episode 1 – Reconstruction
  • Episodes 2 & 3 – Original 1967 Episode
  • Episode 4 – Reconstruction
  • A Fishy Tale – Making of Documentary
  • Australian Censor Clips
  • The Man from Miditz
  • Frazer Hines Introduction for episode 2 as per the original VHS release
  • BBC News Report (South Today)
  • BBC Radio Solent Piece (audio only)
  • Photo Gallery

I will likely swap the anticipated cartoon dvd cover for the original photographic dvd cover of ‘The Underwater Menace’ from 2015.

They can fit 8 episodes on dvd. Problem is that it’s 10 eps that need to fit on it seeing as there is 4 colour/4 black and white animation/2live action. Probably could still fit but would be extremely compressed. If it was for blu ray only they could have fitted all 10 episodes on the same disc. Shame they still follow this silly rule that the dvd and blu ray must have the contents repeated. Hopefully if they notice the complaints they might change their stance and swap out the colour animation with the recons/live action eps and swap places so they are on the same disc. If it’s not I’m most certainly sure it will be rectified by the collection season 4 release

Anne Marie Walsh is producing (faceless/evil) and it’s the bbc studios team though some of the people involved have changed (no rob Ritchie)

Funny they seem to have put both animated versions on one disc and the existing episodes on the other. Normally they pair up the existing episodes on the same disc as the black and white animation so you can watch them through without changing the disc.

I thought they were priests in the Temple with Masks on. The Fish People (creatures) are not in these scenes. The only real baddies are Zaroff and Damon ,and the soldier’s/security people.

fantastic news and Well timed as I was going to go with the DVD.

What is the television centre of the universe documentary about and which dvd or collection boxset can it be found on

    • Gordon

      August 12th, 2023 - 11:00pm

It’s got Peter Davison, janet fielding mark Strickson and Yvette Fielding walking round television centre remising over things that happened there and meeting various people. It’s in 2 parts and part 1 can be found on the visitation special edition and part 2 can be found on the original underwater menace dvd. It is has yet to be ported over to the blu ray sets though the best place for it is probably season 21.

No it’s not. Not too surprised it’s not either considering that it was only on the disc because there was nowhere else to put it being the last planned dvd release of the range at the time. More fitting to be on either season 20 or 21 considering it has Janet Sarah and Peter on it as well as the underwater menace filmed at riverside studios not tv centre.

I would have thought it will follow the same pattern as the others with the Movie Style on one side, and the classic DVD range style on the reverse

We’ll get to see the cover details soon enough i expect if this is coming out in November

1 down just the smugglers to be Offical announced. Means that we now know the season 4 collection will be a few years away. Won’t release so soon after this standalone release. So when/if smugglers is released will just leave the highlanders for season 4. Maybe 1 recon per set but seems a shame not to do highlanders then this will be a full visual season 4 release. 4 others (fury, evil, power and macra) already animated, moonbase and tenth completed.
