Doctor Who The Savages Steelbook

Available to order from www.amazon.co.uk, www.zavvi.com and www.rarewaves.com

The Savages, a four-part series from the Whoniverse, first broadcast between May and June 1966 on the BBC, will return as an animated series to be released on DVD, Blu-ray and a limited-edition Blu-ray Steelbook next spring.

With the original master recording lost, as many of these television episodes where historically wiped after transmission, the BBC Studios Home Entertainment teams worked with original audio recordings and soundtracks of all four episodes and a team of animators to bring back to fans this long-lost story arc.

This three-disc release will include all four 25-minutes animated episodes in both colour and in black and white, as well as a host of exclusive bonus features:

  • Alternative black and white presentation of all four episodes
  • Episode reconstructions of all four episodes, featuring material from the original 1966 production. Available with optional audio description from Peter Purves
  • Cast/crew audio commentaries presented by Toby Hadoke. With actors Kay Patrick (Flower) and the late Robert Sidaway (Avon) on episodes 1 and 2 and with Peter Purves (Steven) and studio floor assistant, Julian Aston on episodes 3 and 4
  • Remembering/Forgetting The Savages – A new 100-minute documentary on the making of the original 1966 production of The Savages. Directed by Stuart Denman and presented by Toby Hadoke.
  • Innes Lloyd – The Producer – New 90-minute documentary on the life of Doctor Who producer, Innes Lloyd. Directed by Charles Norton and narrated by Jane Asher.
  • Surviving Footage Compilation – Short film extracts from the otherwise lost episodes 1, 3 and 4.
  • 1968 BBC training film, featuring The Savages director, Christopher Barry.

In this early story, the Doctor (William Hartnell) and his travelling companions, Steven (Peter Purves) and Dodo (Jackie Lane), arrive on an unnamed planet where they encounter two distinct people – the Elders and the Savages. They soon discover the Elders are the evil ones, draining the primitive Savages for their life source to remain young and powerful forever. This story marks the final appearance of Purves as Steven.

This three-discs release will include all four 25-minutes animated episodes in colour and black and white, as well as exclusive bonus features.

Paul Hembury, Executive Producer commented: “We have a wonderful team of creators who work together to bring these lost Doctor Who stories back to life through animation. It’s always an exciting time when a story nears completion, and we prepare to share it with the fans, for whom it has been made. “

In addition, BBC Studios Home Entertainment will also be releasing the new colourisation of The War Games. Originally aired in 1969, The War Games marked the end of an era for the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton), following him and his companions Zoe and Jamie as they land in a battlefield that appears to be a World War I military zone – but all is not as it seems. They soon discover that soldiers from different historical periods have been abducted and are being manipulated in a cruel game. As they work to uncover the mystery behind the War Lord and his twisted experiments, the Doctor faces one of his most difficult challenges.

For the first time, these original episodes have been meticulously colourised and enhanced with updated visual effects edited into a new, 90-minute feature-length experience to appeal to today’s modern audiences. With updated sound and a new score, this newly updated version of The War Games offers both fans and newcomers even more ways to watch the much-loved classic story. This title will be released on DVD, Blu-ray and limited-edition Blu-ray Steelbook and will air on BBC will air on 23 December 2024 on BBC Four and BBC iPlayer.

Watched it all now. The story is one I first read in 1986 with the release of the novel, first heard in 2002 with the CD release and now i can actually watch it 39 years after first reading it. I do rather like this story, it has its flaws but it’s still good and I think the animation will see a reassessment of this lost tale. The colour animation is great and it really helps bring this very visual story to life as does the monochrome version. The making of is good if perhaps a little long! My favourite bit was realising that the wife of the actor who played tor in 1966 played old ruby in 73 yards in 2024. It’s a little thing but it appealed to me. I don’t mind a long wait for the next animation if it means we will see an increase in production and I don’t care what gets done next, any story will be gratefully received.

Mine arrived today. I’ve watched the black and white animation and it’s very good. The characters are pretty accurate and the animation improves this story so much. As an audio story on CD it requires so much narration, as does the reconstruction (I have one but will watch the new reconstruction tonight) whereas the animation flows without needing explanations of the long silent sequences. Very impressed with this even without getting to the colour version which I’ll try to get done tomorrow. This animation will go a long way to giving this story new life with fans. The story isn’t perfect but it’s fun and being able to watch it is a joy.

Watched the reconstruction now, decent but it does show the problems with this story in that you have to have the narration on to have any hope of knowing what is happening! The commentary was recorded before the animation was finished so it is on the reconstruction and is more on the lines of interviews than an actual commentary on the story. The innes lloyd documentary was interesting too. I’ll hopefully finish the discs tomorrow as I only have the colour version and the making of to watch now. The is one edit tontge original story which I don’t mind. It’s when Avon (no, not that one…) and flower are taken away by the guard using a light gun. That part of the scene has been cut but actually that scene didn’t really make sense as it doesn’t really fit with the world they live in. All they do is let dodo wander off so the totalitarian response really seem out of place especially as they are mentioned as being jano’s young friends later on. It’s a cut which makes no difference to the plot.

I wonder if this means the commentary is only on the reconstruction. It’s possible that the commentary was done prior to the animation and does not fit what was said onscreen

This has been my experience since Royal Mail started sending delivery notices; your 24/48 hour delivery time starts when RM scans it into their system, not when your supplier sends you advice of despatch or when RM picks it up or it arrives on RM property – it’s the same for any delivery company.

If you get a text/email from RM today then expect delivery on Monday; if tomorrow then it will be Tuesday if you have opted for 2-5 day standard delivery. Next Collection set I might try an express delivery to see if it arrives before the release date.

I was hoping they were working on something but as they said at the bfi nothing is in the works or being worked on and the next animation is a year off after this new agreement is in place (but they are expecting to start soon) I’m not expecting a new animation till spring/summer 2026 at the earliest.

      March 5th, 2025 - 9:55am

Well it is a pity we aren’t getting any more animations this year. But if they have secured funding for more animations, then it will worth the wait.

    • D84

      March 5th, 2025 - 10:21am

Still seems curious that there have been multiple references to The Smugglers though

But i agree Prof, these recent suggestions of securing funding for batches seems like a major step forward so will be worth the wait if we one day have visuals for most / all missing stories

    • Craig F

      March 5th, 2025 - 6:14pm

I know what you mean D84 with Anneke Wills recording interviews & talking about it.
Probably just banking banking stuff like they did for season 7, some interviews were recorded up to 3 years ago.
So will just have to wait & see.

    • Gordon

      March 5th, 2025 - 7:45pm

From what I gather the Anneke smugglers extras were filmed mid summer 2023. Partly as she was planning on retiring from appearances at that time.

It may suck that we aren’t getting any more for a while but if it means we get back to animations every 12 months each from both teams so we get a regular 2 releases a year going forward it’s going to be worth the hit of no releases as animations are said to be 9-12 months on average going forward.

It kind of makes me wonder, as people have stated that Ian tries to sell his Recon projects to the BBC at these events, as well as others, and they turn him down… If they have heard how he reacts to fan criticism to his work, that isn’t licenced by the BBC and aren’t ready/Do not care for the PR nightmare he will inevitably be, as he starts slagging of the fan base who try to say anything less than them being absolute masterpieces if it’s available on Home Media and Fans are slamming them worse than the animations… I will admit I haven’t enjoyed all the animations but it’s not against the hard work of the animation team, it’s usually the story (The Underwater Menace I found dull, but the story I found dull when I got the last version that had 2 episodes represented as telesnap recons, and it’s a shame as the animation was much more vibrant in the colour episodes that it should have been more exciting – may have to rewatch with the Black and White Version)

Or at least implied. A solution is being worked on to up the number of titles being produced but nothing is currently finalised. Nothing is currently being worked on but hopefully soon. The way it was worded does not rule out something else being already completed.

IPlayer is heavily implied to be helping funding these. Season sets are now a contributing factor on titles chosen.

    • Gordon

      March 1st, 2025 - 7:30am

They are also commissioned in batches now instead of individually. Also part of the solution is to work on multiple animations simultaneously and speed up the rate of releases. If the ball can get running quickly enough and have enough animation teams in play they potentially could burn through a good chunk of the remaining missing stories in the next couple of years

    • Bob

      March 1st, 2025 - 10:04am

Oh sweet, It’s been slow for a while now with only one story a year. If The Collection sets are a factor then surely The Wheel in Space is a no brainer.

    • Pete X

      March 1st, 2025 - 10:09am

Thanks for reporting this Gordon; it’s really encouaging news.

It seems to me that these plans increase the chance of getting Daleks Masterplan. A batch of 3 or 4 animations across 3 animation houses could consist MU&DM, a 6/7-parter, and 1 or 2 4-parters, which because of the differring story lengths, hence different completion dates, allowing staggered releases.

Let’s hope that the implication that one animation has already been completed (the long rumoured Smugglers maybe), otherwise there might not be a new animation release until late 2026.

    • Pete X

      March 1st, 2025 - 11:59am

      @Bob

And Space Pirates. A single animation house could handle both as they would be able to use the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe assets from one to the other with only changes in Zoe’s cotuming required, trimming the costs of the work.

    • D84

      March 1st, 2025 - 12:30pm

      March 1st, 2025 - 3:14pm

Bob My guess is if wheel got commissioned space pirates will also in the same batch commission.

Pete x it would be nice if they have something banked but if not I’m ok with it. It’s possible that this solution requires pausing things to get everything in order. If it means we can get 2 or potentially 3 releases a year in the long run I’m fine if there is a small hit of no animations for a little bit

    • Gordon

    • SV7

      March 2nd, 2025 - 7:57am

I must say, considering that they have explicitly admitted that nothing new is being worked on, this is all actually very positive news!

I wonder when the batch commissions started. Can’t help but wonder if that was where The Mirror got the title of The Smugglers from, presuming that Toymaker, Savages, Smugglers* and Menace were all commissioned together?

*That is of course, if the Smugglers rumours are true…

      https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi/doctor-who-missing-stories-animations-newsupdate/

      Just came across this

    • Gordon

      March 2nd, 2025 - 9:57pm

Having done a bit of reading up on it I’m even more excited about things.

I saw a Reddit thread on it and going by a couple of people that was there the solution is a deal with the bbc if finalised they will invest more into them and it will be more continuous and regularly.

If and when this is finalised it will be another year for the next animation. However once that one is done they go immediately on to the next one. Previously they would wait have to wait for it to be released first before asking for another commission before work could commence.

The impression is if this goes through the intention will be to eventually do them all. However I suspect that could all change depending on sales.

It would not be a surprise if smugglers is ready. The wording does give some wiggle room. Maybe done alongside savages as a test run. It’s been 19 months since they finished menace. Savages took 9 months leaves 10 months for smugglers. It makes sense to hold it back a little if it’s going to be a while for the next one. Funny enough one of the trap one podcast team mentioned on their podcast review being told smugglers was 100 percent done while waiting in the que at the bfi to meet peter. However considering the guy was drunk and also said aztecs was being animated I’m not sure how much stock you can put on it. Maybe he was referring to a colourisation rather than animation.

    • Gordon

      March 3rd, 2025 - 11:08pm

Mark ayres said any suggestion of smugglers being ready is utter balderdash.

Interesting quotes from the radio times:

There’s good news for fans of classic Doctor Who, as plans are afoot to step up production of new animations that will bring missing stories to life

97 of 253 episodes from the show’s first six years are currently missing, leaving 26 stories incomplete, because the BBC erased or reused tapes in the 1960s and 1970s to save storage space and costs, before archiving policies were in place.

However, with tapes of audio recordings have survived for every episode, a large number of these ‘missing’ adventures have been released with new animated visuals.

The next release is The Savages, starring William Hartnell as the First Doctor and aired in its original form in 1966.

Speaking at a screening of the new animation at the BFI Southbank, executive producer Paul Hembury revealed that while the team behind these projects has traditionally worked on one story at a time, he is “very hopeful” of striking up a new agreement with BBC Studios that would allow them to be animating multiple missing stories simultaneously.

Hembury added, however, that the team are not working on any new stories just yet. “Not quite, but we’re very close,” he said, adding that we are at least a year away “from completion of [another story]”.

Until now, missing stories have been issued as individual releases on DVD and Blu-ray.

Quizzed at the BFI panel as to whether future animations could instead form part of a season boxset – allowing for more Blu-ray set releases of early William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton seasons – Hembury said: “That’s exactly the approach that we’re taking.”

Back in 2006, The Invasion (1968) became the first classic Doctor Who story to be revived in this fashion, with its two missing episodes recreated in black-and-white animation to complete a DVD release. This proved successful, leading to further animated reconstructions over the years.

Most recently, The Underwater Menace, a serial from 1967, was fully animated and released in November 2023 and The Celestial Toymaker, originally aired in 1966, likewise received a full animation treatment and was released on DVD and Blu-ray in 2024.

    • Missyrules

      March 4th, 2025 - 9:14am

They better release the animations separately from the bluray collections as well as a lot of fans don’t buy the collections. By all means release the bluray version in the collection but let’s keep the steel book and DVD releases the same. There will be a lot of angry fans if the animations are collection set only

    • Rory

      March 4th, 2025 - 10:06am

@missyrules, logically, there’s no reason why they wouldn’t. They’re going to want to make as much money as possible, so restricting the releases to only a limited edition bluray boxset with a standard edition two years later doesn’t make business sense.

    • Gordon

      March 4th, 2025 - 11:07am

I had forgotten just how much people were moving around behind the scenes this season with producers and script editors.

I’m impressed by the wealth of extras on this release, certainly the most for an animation to date.
It’s good to see the remaining cast & crew involved too, I see that Patrick Godfrey – Tor is still with us but not mentioned as a contributer.
Well he is 91 perhaps his health may of prevented him from contributing?

Maybe he’s part of the making of. It has 100 minutes to cover

@Prowl, I absolutely adore this cover. Love the contrast and sense of symmetry between the front and back images. They really have outdone themselves this time.

I do love the fact that we have gone from a story which is always forgotten to it getting one of the longest making ofs ever made

I wonder if the wealth of extras have anything to do with he collection. I know they said they are a separate range but surely some of this stuff will reappear on the collection set surely the producers can do a deal to dip in each other budget knowing fans will double dip alot of these releases. Looking to be a busy month of March between this and S7

    • Scotel

      February 14th, 2025 - 6:56pm

No they won’t be dipping into each others budgets. The animations are already expensive enough without having an IOU from a set that won’t be out for several years. Everything will be within its own contained budget.

Now when it eventually comes time for Season 3 to be released, these animations and special features will already be done and paid for which means their budget can be focused elsewhere, but they have no guarantee of what the industry or economy will be like at that point so can’t be spending it in advance.

@Rory. Yeah, I love the contrast between the front and the back, and that the front and back of the steelbook are utilized well. Excited for this one,.

      February 15th, 2025 - 12:23am

@barney pretty much what scotel said. The animations and collection sets each have their own budget. The extras budget for the animations are allocated depending various circumstances. It could be because they feel it is a story that deserves a bit of love or that it’s a release that has a lot of potential extras that can be produced for that release. It just so happened that they were able to juggle and stretch the budget to do more than one documentary. Toby hadoke said it’s not a normal occurrence. They just got carried away. He also said Don’t expect it to be a normal thing with the animations. It definitely does benefit the collection sets.

When season 3 comes along it will have its own separate budget plus the savages portion is pretty good to go. The picture/sound restoration, reconstructions and documentiaries will have already been paid for and cleared for release from the individual release and the budget can be spent on either other savages extras or another story of season 3. Considering how packed the stand alone savages release I don’t expect there be too much new for the savages outside of a behind the sofa and maybe an in conversation with Peter purvis so the budget will probably go towards another story.

It’s up there. Maybe 10th planet from the dvd era or the shada steelbook could run it close

Nothing announced but what exactly was said:

“Cornwall! I loved Cornwall. And you might be seeing more from Cornwall soon! Though I’m not meant to say anything”.

She has also posted a denial through her Facebook: Anneke has heard on the grapevine that there are rumours that she said that Doctor Who – The Smugglers was being animated. Anneke says that is *not* what she said; The Smugglers is her favourite story and she hopes it will be animated but has no idea if it will be! So don’t believe everything you read on the internet!

As I said on the s7 thread something is definitely happening with smugglers. I got told she did film extras in June 2023 (a Toby hadoke presented weekend with directed by Chris chapman). It’s most likely for an animation but some are suggesting there might be a recovery (I’ll believe it when I see it). It’s also possible that the extras she has filmed is for season 4 set rather than an animation but seeing as that’s probably a while off I expect the animation will come first.

When I used the Zavvi link yesterday for the Savages Blu-Ray. (I was Just Browsing). On the Savages page, Directly Underneath the Pre-Order page was Two other Steelbook offers (Guests Frequently bought together) it said.
It was the Mandalorian Season 3 Steelbook and Ahsoka Season 1 Steelbook. (Instant Pre-Order Purchases for me). So i hope some Commission was earned using the link.
I have all the Previous Disney Star wars TV Series that have been released on Steelbook but I didn’t even know these shows had been slated for release yet.
So what a Surprise when I followed the Savages link. So Thankyou.
