Doctor Who’s missing serial The Faceless Ones will be released on DVD, Blu-Ray and SteelBook on 16th March 2020.
BBC Studios is pleased to announce that The Faceless Ones will be the next animated Doctor Who release, filling a gap in missing content. Following the success of The Power of the Daleks, Shada and The Macra Terror, The Faceless Ones will be released on DVD, Blu-Ray and as an exclusive steelbook next year.
The Faceless Ones is the mostly missing eighth serial of the fourth season of Doctor Who, which was first broadcast in six weekly parts from April to May 1967. Starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor, the story concerns a sinister race of identity-stealing aliens known as the Chameleons.
Only two of the six episodes are held in the BBC film archives with snippets of footage and still images existing from the other four. Fortunately, off-air recordings of the soundtrack also still exist, making the animation of a complete serial possible once again.
The six new animated episodes are being made in full colour and high definition and will include the following exclusive special features:
- Photographic reconstruction of the story, including surviving footage of episodes 1 & 3
- Audio commentary on episodes 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6
- ‘Making of the animated series’
- Camera script PDF’s
- Surviving film fragments from the story
- x5 ‘Easter Egg’ surprises
- Coming Soon Fury from the Deep trailer

March 27th, 2020 - 11:07pmThe Wheel in Space would be a great story, to see in animation. The Daleks Master Plan or Evil of the Daleks or the moonbase
Anonymous
March 28th, 2020 - 1:20amI completely agree with the first three. The Moonbase has been animated though.

March 28th, 2020 - 7:47amThe Moonbase animation is still my favorite. Liked that style of animation.
Anonymous
March 28th, 2020 - 1:00pmWatched moonbase in January and the animation is excellent.
Anonymous
March 28th, 2020 - 1:43pmThat is an excellent animation. I also like the Invasion. Reign of Terror is by far my least favorite. I’d like to see that one re-reanimated after all the missing ones are animated.

March 30th, 2020 - 5:20pmI wonder if they’ll wait on the Wheel in Space since there is a telesnap version on BritBox.

March 22nd, 2020 - 3:10pmThe eye chart on episode 2 about 7 mins in. It’s spelled backwards. Just under big ron egg which is also spelled backwards

March 22nd, 2020 - 3:47pmThank you so much Gordon and for all your knowledge of the show, thanks again !

March 22nd, 2020 - 8:26amI was nicely surprised to see the “Wanted” posters of both Delgado and the new Master on the notice board in the Police station in Ep 1 before the motorcycle cops go and investigate the TARDIS.

March 22nd, 2020 - 2:01pmVery good Animation ,but was hoping they would leave the black and white version, free of the wanted sign Easter Eggs !
Anonymous
March 22nd, 2020 - 2:51pmTo be honest I think I’ll only ever watch the original episodes with the black and white animation and occasionally the full colour version.
Anonymous
April 3rd, 2020 - 8:28pmI liked several of the little nods. Magpie electrics, Hibbert’s plastics, the newspaper in air traffic control and the Delgado wanted poster. I liked that the sacha master was there and I liked when it was replaced by the monk later on.

March 19th, 2020 - 8:05pmAnyone else spotted troughton’s floating arm in eps 1 animation? It’s in both versions. Just after polly is kidnapped, Jamie and the doctor walk away and just before they turn the sleeve of the coat appears between them.

March 21st, 2020 - 11:32pmAs you should be aware of by now. “The team don’t have time to work in these animations in small detail and you should be grateful that you even got the story in the first place I mean how rare is that?. Maybe in a couple of years they could finally fix it in the super special edition, which you will have to pay another 12.99 for instead of just making it right first time”. Oxygen was such a great story wasn’t it.

March 22nd, 2020 - 9:39amEr, it’s not a complaint just an observation. It’s a very minor error and makes no difference. I just wondered if anyone else had spotted it. Due to time and money it’s inevitable that some errors will creep in and not be fixed. Besides it’s on Episode one an episode that exists!

March 19th, 2020 - 7:04pmJust got mine today, watched the original episodes with the b&w animation, about to watch 1 and 3 in b&W now. Have to say I think that did one is the one I’ll probably watch most. Great fun to watch this story. Not the greatest story but troughton and Hines are just so watchable. Also have to admit I thought this was a vast improvement on macra. I wasn’t keen on the alterations made to macra so I’m very happy with faceless as they seem to have tried to get the animation to match more to how it should have been. Colour version tomorrow then reconstruction and extras Saturday. The one silver lining of isolation!
Anonymous
March 20th, 2020 - 10:13pmWatched it all now. Enjoyed the colour version but I’ll probably make the original episodes black and white animation my go to watch. The reconstruction is decent but you do need to put the narration on. The extras are sparse, but the making of is interesting.

March 19th, 2020 - 12:08amHas anyone else noticed a sticking on episode one? I’ve only done episode one on disc two in colour and it has been rubbish to watch ; the episode is very intriguing and thankfully uplifted, but the issue is really taking away from it all…

March 19th, 2020 - 12:55amNow I’ve looked at disc one and that is perfect, disc three plays, but – now this one I have never seen in all the hundreds of dr who dvds – the cursor will sometimes get stuck and then disappear rendering the disc unplayable until you restart
Also, only found one out of five Easter eggs…
I’m thinking there must be some on disc one and two as they say “bonus contents” yet haven’t any bonus

March 18th, 2020 - 8:38amSomething that bothers me with releases since for six consecutive years across nine releases is the “years” banner at the bottom where the doctors era appears and their photo – why since jan 2014 have they all been blue? Surely this has been noticed and is getting old – why aren’t there other colours?
2014 – web and moonbase- blue
2015 – underwater menace – blue
2016 – power and TV movie – blue
2017,18,19 – Shada, enemy SE, Macra – all blue
2020 has now got faceless in the typical template and yet again it’s blue!
Please can we have some more originality for fury – I’m hoping for green to spice it up because Troughton banners seem very blue – thoughts…

March 17th, 2020 - 6:07pmWell, just bought mine from the local, completely deserted, HMV. I did consider the steelbook but decided against it. Since there’s no extra content over the standard release, a la Macra Terror, I don’t see the point of paying an extra £8 for an attractive piece of tin. Each to their own though, and to those who wanted it and got it, congrats. I’ll be watching this on days off the rest of this week. Can’t wait!

March 17th, 2020 - 11:41amThey have them in store all three versions
Can they send from there?
Anonymous
March 17th, 2020 - 2:24pmNo, only from warehouse. Had them in warehouse 48hrs now and still nothing. No point in emailing as it takes them 3 days To respond. I order online because I suffer from depression and can’t always leave the house, so you fan imagine how I felt when told to just cancel the preorder and “just go and by it, it’s here, what’s the problem?” From a member of staff on the phone when I phoned to see if the release had been put back.
Anonymous
March 17th, 2020 - 6:07pmIts finally been sent which is a relief. Especially in these increasingly scary times. I need something to occupy myself with to keep myself on an even keel. Sounds daft I know but that’s the way it is. Faceless will keep me going for awhile!

March 17th, 2020 - 9:00amI’m really loving these animated releases. They fill in the gaps, that are lost to time (no pun intended). I would like to see some from the Hartnell era done in animation, there are gaps there too. Let’s hope this animated era continues, so WHO fans can fill in the gaps

March 16th, 2020 - 2:41pmAre there any news on a region 1 release because I know that we’re gonna have to wait so many months for it to release in my country because in December 2017 Shada released in region 2 then November 2018 Shada released in region then in March 2019 the Macra terror region 2 then November 2019 The Macra Terror released in region 1. Can somebody explain why they can’t pick a date for it to release it worldwide than releasing it in one region then wait a couple months to release it in a another region?
Gordon
March 16th, 2020 - 7:49pmIt’s because bbc America majority fund it. They want it for broadcast and they want to wait till it’s close to the tv broadcast on bbc America before releasing it.

March 16th, 2020 - 12:23pmI agree, Jimbob. Had my steelbook on pre-order since June. Up until yesterday it was showing as “arriving tomorrow”, now received e-mail saying no idea when (if) it will be delivered. Amazon are becoming a joke. I’ve cancelled it and ordered from Zoom. Think I will use zoom going forward, as they always seem to deliver their releases on time or ahead of time. Amazon just don’t care.

March 15th, 2020 - 5:57pmMy copy came today, had pre-ordered from Amazon. Wasn’t actually expecting it to come until tomorrow. Very good, looking forward to Fury now. But the cover artwork for the last 2 animated Troughton stories has been AWFUL, surely they could have come up with something better, given all the effort that has been put into bringing this story back to us!
