Doctor Who The Evil of The Daleks Steelbook

Available to order from,, and other selected retailers.

BBC Studios announce Doctor Who: The Evil of the Daleks Animation, due for release on 27th September 2021.

BBC Studios have announced the new Doctor Who: Evil of the Daleks animation starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor and can reveal artwork alongside a sneak peak of what’s included in the release.

The announcement lands on the 53rd anniversary in which the last episode of the original version was aired. The new animated release will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and a Limited Edition Blu-ray Steelbook from 27th September 2021.

The Evil of the Daleks is the mostly-missing ninth and final serial of the fourth season of the British series Doctor Who, which originally aired in seven weekly parts from 20th May to 1st July 1967.

Following the success of the existing animations, The Evil of the Daleks fills another gap in the missing Doctor Who content lost in the purge of the BBC archive soon after the programme’s original transmission. However, audio-only recordings of all seven episodes have survived and have been used here to create a brand new fully animated presentation of this lost classic, featuring the original surviving second episode.

The Doctor (Patrick Troughton) stars alongside his travel companion Jamie (Frazer Hines) in this recreation in which the TARDIS has been stolen. The story unfolds as the Doctor and Jamie set out to find the missing time machine, bringing them face to face with a very old enemy – the Daleks, who have a new masterplan to conquer the universe. The Daleks force the Doctor to help them on their quest to ‘humanise’ themselves into deadlier living weapons. This particular story is notable for introducing the Doctor’s new companion Victoria Waterfield (Deborah Watling), first seen in the surviving second episode, and also for presenting the Dalek Emperor.

The three disc release gives fans the opportunity to enjoy The Evil of the Daleks, available in either colour or black and white.

The release will include:

  • Remastered Surviving Original Episode 2
  • Telesnap Reconstructions – 6 episodes
  • Audio Commentaries
  • Audiobook, with recorded commentary by Tom Baker
  • Making Of
  • Photo Gallery

Finished this yesterday (colour version). Great fun!
Was previously a bit meh about this story (unlike Power, which I loved since I read the telesnap photonovel).
But the animation really sold me on this.
The best of all the animations? I think probably yes.

I’m watching now, currently on episode three!

    It’s so good!

Was really worried about this one because it is my all time favourite Doctor Who but what a fantastic job they have done in it, loving every second. Hopefully it will give this classic story an even higher status among Whovians

Just finished it, it was incredible, the Dalek civil war was done brilliantly

Completely agree. This was my first time “watching” evil and I loved it. Watched the black and white version first with the surviving episode 2. Halfway through the color version. Review coming soon for the B&W version.

I think my biggest concerns were how they would capture the mood of the story. The surviving episode is wonderful and there is a fantastic cast and three very contrasting locations. Having listened to the CD with Frazer Hines narrating so many times I had really high expectations. Evil was the audio I would probably revisit the most I had the tin box set along with Power.
It’s easily the missing story I’m most familiar with, I used to listen to all three hours of it in one go and it flew by, so I knew what is coming, but despite that it still felt so fresh. The scenes with Jamie walking the corridors and bumping into Kemmel are so atmospheric on the CD and they captured that perfectly with this, even the lighting, the way the corridors go dark and lighter with the candles being lit. It marries up so well to Mark Ayres enhanced soundtrack.
It was perfect, the one I wanted the most above all the rest and it totally delivered. I look forward to the others but I’m so happy with this one. Love it!

Finally got round to watching Evil this morning. Decided on watching the colour version.
Really enjoyed watching it, found it to be excellent. They were great tiny little details included in the animation. Did anyone notice when sunlight flooded through the windows you could even see little specs of dust floating around?
(Unless my floaters are playing up again).

    • The Brigadier@2013

      September 29th, 2021 - 7:59pm

Glad I’m not the only one who noticed the dust flying around! Great attention to detail, which adds depth to the animation. I decided to watch the B&W version first, and it didn’t disappoint!

    • Coleman

      September 30th, 2021 - 1:02pm

Yes Brigadier@2013. I think the animators made an effort to put the dust particles in the story because at one point the maid was doing some dusting and you can clearly hear Patrick Troughton coughing because of the excess dust. Which I’m presuming was on the original sound recordings taken from the show when 1st broadcast. (Great attention to detail).

I agree the animation here is top of the class and is up there as one of the best so far. Even my wife who doesn’t really watch these things with me but will casually observe a few minutes here and there remarked “wow this animation is really good”

  • Tim M

    September 28th, 2021 - 8:01pm

It really is a very good animation. The colour version is the one I would more likely pick if I wanted to watch this story again. My only nitpick with the animation is the likeness of the Second Doctor, which I felt was the weakest likeness of Troughton in all the animations we have had so far. Nevertheless ‘Evil of the Daleks’ is a great story (10/10), and the animation is superb throughout, only loses a point due to a weaker Troughton likeness. (9/10)

What do you think about the quality of the Steelbook then? Mine seems to have a scratch on the front top right. Not as glossy as the previous ones?

    • D84

      September 28th, 2021 - 9:44am

I appear to be lucky no a scratch or dent anywhere to be found, I feel its a thing of beauty – one of the best ones yet IMO

    • D84

      September 28th, 2021 - 2:10pm

@ Rob W – having looked at my copy again, I too have a mark on the top right front which looks like a scratch but its actually not on mine. Mine matches the cover art picture on this post. Is this the same on yours?

    • Rob W

      September 28th, 2021 - 2:55pm

Comparing it the above image, I am mistaken. Thanks for the reply, mine’s in A1 condition then. Cheers mate.

    September 27th, 2021 - 10:07pm

Great animation! Watched all seven episodes in colour. This style of animation which is very similar to ‘Macra Terror’ and ‘Faceless Ones’, is the style all animators from whatever company should try and stick too.

      September 27th, 2021 - 7:16pm

    September 27th, 2021 - 3:35pm

This one truly is special. Mine came on Friday and watching one episode daily. It’s the first animation where I’m totally drawn in. It looks great, moves great and overall is spot-on. I don’t even feel like I’m watching an animated lost episode. It just works so well.

    • Rex Farrel

      September 27th, 2021 - 2:15pm

Fat finger mistake I suspect, u being next to i. Probably too annoyed at Zavvi to check before posting. Zavvi do seem to have a reputation these days for over selling limited sets.

    • Coleman

      September 27th, 2021 - 2:32pm

Probably a typo Booboo, I do it all the time. Very annoying when I read my comments back and find their full of mistakes. Lol.

    • Alvin Amey

      September 27th, 2021 - 5:38pm

I also ordered the steelbook from Zavvi, I guess they’re running late sending out stock as my order has just gone from ‘processing’ to ‘waiting to despatch’ and I see the money has just been taken out my account by Zavvi.

I’m not too bothered about the delay considering its only costing me £23, plus I’d ordered the DVD from Amazon and that arrived today so I can still watch it if I wanted.

  • Rory

    September 27th, 2021 - 1:17pm

For anyone interested, has signed copies of all versions for sale. I’m assuming that the steelbook orders will be dependent on availability.

    • Gordon

      September 27th, 2021 - 2:48pm

The who shop has them up as well. The steelbook is £10 cheaper there

    • Rory

      September 27th, 2021 - 5:19pm

      Didn’t think to check them.

It is only 4-6 quid cheaper when you add postage, but any saving is good, especially if you’re getting other stuff at the same time.

  • Coleman

    September 27th, 2021 - 12:59pm

It’s just arrived guys. Delivered by an Amazon van, looks great.
Hopefully, going to watch it tomorrow morning.( Still undecided which version though).

  • Scott

    September 25th, 2021 - 5:12pm

Mine arrived yesterday from Amazon. Watched all the episodes in colour this morning. It’s defo going the right way in terms of the animation. It’s defiantly a lot stronger and easier on the eye. Such a good story so glad it’s been done. Got to watch the remastered surviving episode and the bonus stuff at some point this weekend but I’d say we’re defiantly going in the right direction for the animations.

    • Coleman

      September 26th, 2021 - 11:21am

Hasn’t arrived so far this morning, but I’m in two minds wether to watch the Black & White or Colour version. Usually like watching the Black & White versions of the old Dr Who stories.
Although will be watching the Colour version of Galaxy 4 first. Really like the colour pallette of Whats been shown so far in the teaser trailer.

    • The Brigadier@2013

      September 26th, 2021 - 12:16pm

Very similar here. Dispatch email received on Friday late night, saying delivery due on Saturday 25th September through Amazon Logistics. Click in Track My Package…says parcel arrived at final delivery station at 3.05am on Saturday, but arriving Monday. Nothing delivered as of yet. Wonder if ot has anything to do with driver shortages? A while ago, something I ordered was running late, and an Amazon driver told my Mam that they had a lot on that day, when she received something she’d ordered.

    • Rob W

    • Prof Horner

Thanks for this Gordon,I did wonder about this. Personally I prefer this song anyway, a great pop song.

    • Lee d

      August 24th, 2021 - 10:23pm

Oh, I was hoping they may have got round the clearance issues, but never mind, I wonder why some beetles songs are harder to clear then others?

    • Rex Farrel

      August 25th, 2021 - 9:29am

I would guess that they’re wanting one master that’s clearable worldwide, rather than a UK version and Other version. Either that, or this counts as a new product and needs different clearance procedures to a preexisting tv prog.

    • Lee d

      August 25th, 2021 - 5:41pm

Thanks Gordon and thanks Rex, I remember they said clearances for this country, are usually OK, but not world wide.

  • Gordon

    August 19th, 2021 - 12:32am

Seen a preview for it in the new doctor who magazine. Very excited for the overall package of this release.

Got to say the colour stills look promising and in 2d (to put those that hated the web animation at ease).

Anne-Marie Walsh describes the animation as a step up over the faceless ones with more flexibility with the character movement.

The audio for all 7 episodes and the picture for ep 2 has been restored from scratch. Mark has also subtly added a couple of explosions and door effects as the original missed off sound effects.

The making of is called the dalek factor and actually visits grim dike hotel along with Frazer Hines (Jamie), timothy Combe (second unit director), Chris Thompson (designer), David Tilley ( assistant floor manager) and Charlotte Martinus (daughter of the director Derek Martinus)

The new Commentary for episode 2 is with Chris Thompson and doctor who magazine writer Philip Newman. Also included on the commentary track is Archive interviews with Derek Martinus and sonny caldinez and new interviews Toby hadoke has recorded with Frazer Hines, David Tilley and Timothy Combe. Toby hadoke and Timothy Combe has also done a bonus commentary for an extensive photo galllery. The 2004 lost in time commentary with Gary Russell and Deborah Watling is also included

    Telesnap reconstruction with original audio

The last dalek: Behind the scenes footage from the Ealing shoot narrated by Peter day and MichaelJohn Harris.

Unreleased interview with Chris Thompson from 2018

Episode 1 repeat intro by Patrick Troughton

1992 audio version narrated by Tom baker

Camera scripts and radio times cuttings

      August 19th, 2021 - 9:45am

Another great selection of special features. Nice to have confirmation that the making of is about the original production and filmed at the main location for this story’s location filming. The repeat intro and last dalek is a nice addition also

  • Auton

    August 8th, 2021 - 7:01pm

Does anyone know if the making of is for the animation or the original production?

I assume it’s for the original 1967 production.

    • Auton

Shapeshifter have pretty much confirmed Galaxy 4’s happening on their CV

But if Big Finish Creative are doing Galaxy 4, what’s going on with Abominable Snowmen?

    • Gordon

      July 5th, 2021 - 5:25pm

That’s a bit of a shocker. Think most were expecting them to be doing abominable next (me included). Maybe it’s the bbc studios group that’s actually doing it. However with them still being busy with evil they may have not started the animation yet. It could be a while before we get it. The cv has a 2020 date for galaxy 4 so I think it could be coming sooner rather than later.

    • Anonymous

      July 6th, 2021 - 12:23pm

Much as I’d love abominable next, frankly any story will be gratefully accepted!

    • D84

      July 9th, 2021 - 2:57pm

Agreed “anonymous” – anything currently lost brought back as an animation will do

    • Dalek Eye Stalk

      July 10th, 2021 - 1:19pm

If historicals are off the table, and are unlikely to be animated (except for ‘Reign of Terror’), surely seasons 1, 2 and maybe almost season 4 could be released as Blu ray complete season releases sooner rather than later. Maybe the missing Historicals would be presented with tele snap/photo reconstructions with audio.

    • Anonymous

      July 10th, 2021 - 3:32pm

Although bear in mind that the BBC Studios team said that, not Big Finish Creative. AnnMarie Walsh said BBC Studios couldn’t do Highlanders because of “all the tartan.” Gary Russell said BFC could do The Highlanders, no problem.

In fact, “all the tartan” isn’t even an issue if the 3D animation is tweaked and perfected for a potential Highlanders animation.

If they do that dalek, people will just complain. They always do.

It was included in the 3 disc Lost in Time collection containing all episodes and surviving footage from the remaining uncompleted stories

This includes new animations for the missing episodes.
