Anyone else noticed a small issue with the audio on episode four of Terror of the Autons?
When I have the new CGI effects switched on the audio cuts out for just a second after the opening tittles. When the new effects are off it seems just fine.

Some booklets had a few of the pages printed twice, ie. missing other pages. Most sets are fine though, and BBC seem happy to replace the booklet if you did get a misprinted one.

Sorry people, tried to post this but it ended up near the bottom.

Having purchased and gone through the set, I am pleased with how the quality of the restoration looks given the variable source material.

Terror of the Autons is an improvement looking a little sharper with optional cgi effects, Mind of Evil the improved sound is noticeable and The Colony in Space now looks as good as Inferno Special Edition.

I haven’t got to The Daemons yet, my only disappointment was the results for The Claws of Axos Episodes 2 and 3. I know these had the colour luminance from the NTSC copies transferred to the PAL film copies like The Colony in Space, but some sequences like in the Axon ship and the laboratory look quite fuzzy.

I am guessing these were transfers from the DVD SE are possibly due to available source material i.e. film as opposed to videotaped sequences. Just curious as to why Inferno, Colony and the Time Monster looked noticeably better than these two episodes using the same technique if any one can shed any light on this?

That aside I am very happy with this release as I am big Pertwee era fan despite McCoy having been my Doctor.

You might notice that episodes 1 and 4 are quite noisy also despite being transferred from the original tapes, that might be why.

I have to agree that there was a great improvement from the season 8 dvd releases. I was however, a little disappointed. It really doesn’t come anywhere near the fabulous picture quality of the season 10 release. Source material issues I guess?
I also would have loved to see 1993’s “return to devil’s end” included, it would have made perfect sense to put that in. Anyone have an idea why this didn’t happen?

Season 10 has 25 of the 26 episodes in it’s original pal recorded format (only exception being planet of the daleks ep 3). Season 8 on the other hand only has 3 episodes out of 25 (axons 1,4 and daemons 4). The rest are on a variety of different formats and thus was never going to be as impressive.

Return to devil’s end is a reeltime pictures production and thus not bbc affiliated. It also had its own release a couple of years ago under the reeltime label as a 3 disc set paired with the white witch of devil’s end which is a spin off that reeltime also produced

Why did they include Stewart Bevan on the Behind The Sofa. He doesn’t add anything; why couldn’t they have had Richard Franklin or John Levene?

    • Auton

      April 18th, 2021 - 11:24am

Why not, he and Katy manning are amazing together and having them together again is great especially if you had your way then they would only be able to take part in special features for the green death as that’s the only story he appeared in. They obviously had him on there to change up the behind the sofa teams but I’m sure Richard franklin and John Levene will be in future behind the sofas as they were amazing as well on the season 10 boxset

    • daz

      April 18th, 2021 - 12:08pm

John Levene has been ill recently so probably not available unfortunately.

I emailed dvdsupport the other week suggesting the SJA kids do Series 11 and 13 as it would be great to see them watching Sarah Jane in her first and then final full season.

    • Gordon

      April 18th, 2021 - 1:04pm

They filmed the trailer for season 8 roughly the same as the behind the sofa so it probably made sense to use him. He was in a relationship with Katy at the time the episodes were filmed so it’s not like it’s random. I believe he doesn’t live too far from where they film the behind the sofa too as does Katy. Richard Franklin was in hospital roughly the same time they made the extras so probably wouldn’t be available. The behind the sofas were made during a pandemic. As for John maybe not the best idea to have a near 80 year old leave home to come pretty much 100 miles to a busy Covid infested London at a time before there was a vaccine.

I think Mr McDermott’s death is so chilling. The Master just watches it happen with a blank expression. I think that is why Terror is better than Spearhead because it has so many concepts in it.

I’ve virtually done the whole box set now, overall I thought it was excellent. I didn’t realise series 8 was so good, quite a few of the stories I’ve only watched a few times, it is definitely better for watching chronologically, even Colony in Space I was gripped to and I think last time I watched it I was a bit bored. The extra features were all brilliant as always, it is probably one of the best ones they have done so far. When it was announced I was surprised it came so soon because of all restoration work it needed but they did a quality job. Seven is my favourite Pertwee series but this box set really made me love eight a lot more and now I want them to do nine

I remember reading the Curse of Pleadon target book when I was a kid and when I finally saw it for the very first time which was the DVD release it did not disappoint!

Sea Devils also a classic! I think Time Monster is harmless, the problem is if you measure it against the other Pertwee series finales such as Inferno, Daemons and Green Death it is always going to look pale but only because they are so good

    • Day Dalek Gold

      March 31st, 2021 - 3:50pm

Yes I think that is exactly the thing. Because most people perceive the Pertwee era with great openings and finals, but most people overlook the latter half of season 9, but if you think about it as a whole the Pertwee era is the most solid era in terms of consistent good quality, but as you said the Time Monster is not terrible and does not stand out. I think season 9 would be a good and tactical boxset.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      March 31st, 2021 - 10:11pm

The Time Monster is one of the ones I always think gets treated unfairly in the polls it is no classic but there are many that are much worse. Like The Space Pirates always scores lowly but I really like it personally. Still it’s hard to dislike any Troughton stories

    • Gordon

      April 1st, 2021 - 1:59am

I’d love season 9 as the next pertwee season just so Katy can do behind the sofa for all her stories. I’d also like Katy to do behind the Sofa either 7 or 11 so that we can see our thoughts on some of Jon’s non Katy stories. The kids from sja would be great to have for season 11. If they could get Sean pertwee it would be great if they could pair him with either daisy ashworth (7) or Sadie Miller (11) or heck Katy manning (9).

Katy for more sofa is a good shout maybe even some other Doctor’s series, far too much Janet Fielding on the Behind the Sofas. Let’s rest her now for a bit. She teamed up really well with John Levene and Richard Franklin on series 10 maybe that trio again for 9?
In fact hope they use John Levene for all the remaining Pertwee’s he’s brilliant. Weekend with Levine still one of the best documentaries ever! Maybe pair him with Tom and Philip Hinchcliffe for 13 too

So in The Collection, the 8th release was Season 8 with 8 discs, which relesed on March 8th. On disc 8 is a documentary hosted by Frank Skinner. Frank Skinner appeared in series 8 episode 8. Frank Skinner also does Big Finish work in their Callan series, with Big Finish having done so mjch for the 8th Doctor. So does this mean there’ll be an 8th Doctor/Callan crossover from Big Finish soon?

Once that’s finished he’s taking a few weeks off doctor who as he’s been working on the blu ray sets flat out for the past year. He seems to know what it is. I’d guess it’s probably a Tom or a peter

I think 15 is the most likely however

A real dark horse outsider I would say 25. Many would say no way two McCoys in a row or back to back seasons but given all the restrictions they are faced with and limited number of episodes in that series why not bang it out soon?

    • Prof Horner

      March 23rd, 2021 - 11:41am

Well as much as part of me would like to see season 25 released after 24, simply to get the awful McCoy out of the way. Leaving just season 22 the last season that I won’t be wasting my money on. I think think season 15 is a good bet . not a the great season by any means, a massive step down from season 14 I have always thought that Williams was a victim of things outside his control .

    • Anonymous

      March 23rd, 2021 - 3:33pm

By process of elimination I think we can take it down to a Tom Baker season. With Season 20 on hold until COVID clears up in Europe, I could see similar problems for Seasons 17, 21 and 22 if they want to do similar documentaries.

Assuming no black and white seasons for a while, and that Pertwee and McCoy aren’t getting a double release this year, that narrows us right down.

    • daz

      March 23rd, 2021 - 6:01pm

I’ve always thought Season 16 would be the next Tom Baker set. Then we have one featuring each of his companions.

So Season 20 for 2022 then.

Either way I want them all.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      March 23rd, 2021 - 7:51pm

      Prof Horner

But Season 24 has Delta and The Bannermen on it!!!

Do I remember correctly Chris Chapman saying he would like to do a Mary Tamm documentary which suggests one is not done yet perhaps meaning it might not be 16 next?

I still would not rule out a 60s too quickly I think they working on them they are just logistically tougher and longer but I just don’t see all six being left till last that would be crazy.

I also would not assume two doctors in the same year will not happen, particularly the 80s era as they are more recent and easier to work on. Clearly they want to spread the eras around but there many factors on what they are working on.

I still agree 15 is most likely on the basis of Louise Jameson suggesting she was working with Tom on something

But again 2 or 6 please team

    • Auton

      March 23rd, 2021 - 8:20pm

Bobby, Chris Chapman could still have made a tribute to Mary Tamm and could just be making it sound like he hasn’t done it. He’s hardly going to say he’s made one or that will spoil what set is next/soon. So season 16 could still be next but if not then it will probably be 15 or 17

Even best case scenario this range is going to be going on until well past the middle of the decade, it would be very short sighted to drop a Troughton release now knowing the animation team are focusing on that era. I could absolutely see Seasons 1 or 2 being released, but 5 or 6 would just be asking for backlash when one of the stories inevitably gets announced a few months later and can’t be included on the set (I expect we’ll have 5 and 6 fully animated in the next three years, so we won’t be waiting for the end of the range for all of them regardless).

    • Prowl 1701

      March 24th, 2021 - 1:19am

I don’t think it will be season 17 as I figure they would want to do some work in Paris for city of death as it is a highlight of the season. I’m hoping for 15 if it’s a Tom season.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      March 24th, 2021 - 7:02am

But six only has The Space Pirates missing that’s less episodes than one which is missing the whole of Marco Polo. The most complete 60s series is Two.
It is 3, 4 and 5 that have gapping holes.
The Spare Pirates is famously unloved too and often comes very low in polls, there is also no telesnapes or source material making an animation difficult. Most fans would happily take the remaining episode and narrated soundtrack if it meant having the rest of series six I know I would

15 has horror of fang rock which is a classic. I also like the invisible enemy and image of the Fendahl. I haven’t watched the sun makers, underworld or the invasion of time in quite sometime so it wouldn’t be nice to watch those again. If it is 15 what new special features could they make?

    • Auton

We won’t see 13 for a while. They’ll either keep it to be his final Season release or be a nice one for 60th Anniversary year.

I expect Season 11 will be released first for more Sarah Jane goodness.

    • Prof Horner

      March 24th, 2021 - 11:47am

Surely Underworld is more likely to get new FX? Regarding Delta and the Bannerman that was series totally humiliation , could the series sink any lower than that. At least now if you don’t like nu who, there is so much older Who out there to enjoy .Back in 87 there was just a handful of videos and target books if like current Who. I should have stopped watching then , but i didn’t want to leave the sinking ship and let Powell win. Yes I know the series got better with season 25 , butthe damage was done with this panto season.

In my opinion, the Underworld model effects of the spaceship are excellent; love the cliff hanger to episode one when the ship is buried and the shots in episode two when it crashes through the crust of the planet. It’s just the CSO studio scenes which are appalling so if they tightened those up like the Terror of the Autons release with softened edges, then I think it would be a big improvement.

Just done the Terrance and Me film, another cracker. I do really like Toby but it was definitely refreshing to have a new face and Frank Skinner was excellent, touching dedication to a Who legend and lots about him I never knew. The only thing that bothers me with this set is that Pertwee on the spine is visibly bigger than Doctors on the other spines. (Also the box he is in looks to be 2mm higher).

Yes, I’ve noticed that and it bothers me too! That and the fact that the ‘enemies’ montage is in the spine image again, too! It’s on this, season 23 and the season 12 reissue. I think it’ll keep bothering me for the duration of the run because of how visible it is on your shelf that it’s been done incorrectly. So much love and care goes into these I don’t understand how this very visible error goes unnoticed. Since the season 23 release I open each wondering if the spine image will be correct or not…

Yes this is a slight gripe of mine too. I have “clean” artwork on the other sets but the spine imagine for S8, S12 (2nd EDT) and S23 all contain the villains and as you say S8 is marginally higher and just seems bigger than the others. Also annoyed at the age warning of 12 being different to the other sets that are also 12

Whilst I absolutely love the ‘Behind the Sofa’ features, I do come to question which clips are actually selected for the actors to watch. Take ‘The Mind of Evil’ one; with Sacha Dharwan’s modern Master in the studio, why did they not show them the clip where the Master is subjected to what he fears the most by the mind parasite? It would have been great to hear Sacha’s reaction to this scene.

Does this include the mis print of Barry Letts being credited as director of the Daemons or is this for something different like the pages all messed up?

    • daz

      March 19th, 2021 - 4:58pm

      Pages blank, text unreadable etc…

Everyone has the Barry Letts error so they won’t replace those

Zavvi also cancelled my order today.
The reason given is its no longer available and they have not been able to source further stock.
Order was originally placed on 28/11/20

I complained and they did offer me a 5 (I’m guessing pound?) credit. So I’d a least ask for that.

I pre-ordered with Zavvi on first day of pre-order. Started to get worried a few days after release, having not received any messages of dispatch. All messages ignored until today when they cancelled my order.

Received the same email this morning. I ordered it from Zavvi Australia within the first hours of it going up for pre-order. Apparently, it’s due to them receiving insufficient stock, and being unable to source more elsewhere.

The same has happened to me; pre-ordered with Zavvi in November, cancelled just now, no reason (let alone apology) given.

      March 18th, 2021 - 5:40am

Mine was canceled too even after I messaged them days ago and was told they were waiting for more stock. Now I get an email saying that their stock is depleted and my order is canceled. The only saving grace is I had ordered a second copy on eBay at a higher cost because I simply don’t trust Zavvi. It’s getting harder and harder to get these imported into the states.

      Apologies for delay in replying.

They finally got back to me, saying that they were let down by their suppliers – not getting all that they ordered.

I corresponded a few more times, admonishing them(for what it’s worth) for not keeping me updated – allowing me to purchase elsewhere.

I even asked for management to message me but not heard anything.

      Deff.com have copies for £54.99 – 1 per customer.

      https://deff.com/doctor-who-the-collection-season-8

Set was in mint condition, excellent packaging, delivered within 3 days.

I hedged my bets and perused ebay and managed to snag a copy for £46 including P&P – usual advice – forget about getting a copy over the weekend!

Biggest omission ever is not including Disneytime clips with Tom Baker in original Season 12 costume which aired just before Terror of the Zygons in 1975 – how could they miss a trick like that, he even gets handed a note from the Brigadier at the end… I mentioned to the BBC on more than one occasion that these clips are out there on YouTube (albeit in poor quality and with a timecode), if they miss the opportunity to include them whenever Season 13 comes out I guess that’s last chance saloon! Can’t say it’s a rights issue either as they could easily include the Who snippets without as much as a frame of Disney footage.

I’m sure they will be included on season 13. I have seen them and YouTube a few years ago and their great so I’m hoping there on the boxset too

It was on the terror of the zygons dvd as an Easter egg so its most certainly going on that disc when season 13 hits blu ray.

What are peoples thoughts on the “years” features? As in the Tom Baker Years from the VHS tapes, does anyone think we’ll get the rest of them? I’m assuming they’ll go on the first/final sets for each doctor ?

I’m sure they will add the other VHS years clips on the other boxsets just like their already doing with the pertwee years clips on the daemons disk and frontier in space disk. The Tom Baker years was one of my favourite special features from season 12

      March 16th, 2021 - 6:08pm

Same here! I’d love the full versions (minus the actual episodes obviously) like the Tom Baker Years, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was pretty much full length on season 12! I know it’s said a lot, but I love these sets for the fact they are like goldmines of not just doctor who but all
Sorts of things like news reports, Blue Peter, contextual features both science and social. Definitely worth my money!

    • Gordon

      March 17th, 2021 - 1:28am

Think for ones that have full episodes it will just be the links on their respective stories and for ones that are clip shows (tom and Colin) they will include the full thing.

Some of them were already released on the DVDs.

Patrick Troughton links: enemy of the world special edition

Jon pertwee: the inferno linking material is on the inferno dvd and special edition

Dalek years: power of the daleks special edition.

Still unreleased on dvd or blu ray so far:

The William Hartnell years (hosted by Sylvester McCoy and includes an unearthly child pilot, crusade ep 3 and celestial toymaker ep 4)

Colin baker years (clip show hosted by Colin)

The cybermen years (hosted by Colin baker with moonbase 2 and 4 and wheel in space 3 and 6)

Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy never had 1

      March 17th, 2021 - 2:22am

Can we get them to make a Davison and McCoy years for future blu ray sets

    • Gordon

      March 17th, 2021 - 11:42am

There is very little point in them doing that. If it’s a clip show format when they talk about what they see on screen it’s pretty much what behind the sofa is now and as they aren’t including full episodes (based off the pertwee links) there is zero point in doing intros for something that isn’t going to get made.

      March 19th, 2021 - 7:09am

The Cybermen years can be put on one of the 2nd doctor boxset’s Cybermen stories so perhaps the Moonbase on season 4. The William Hartnell years can go on season 3 boxset as that will have a lot of space. The Colin baker years can go on season 22.

Has anyone who received the faulty booklets, had any response from [email protected] yet ?

Sent a message beginning of last week, but still no reply accept for the auto reply thank you message.

I sent pics of the booklet and links to youtube unboxing that shows the issue again today and see if they respond this time.

Here’s a link to a youtube video I found that shows the problem with missing/duplicate pages (not my video)

No reply for me either after the auto-reply email last Monday. Have they released a statement anywhere about supplying replacement booklets for people? Just wondered if they were waiting a while then processing everything in one go?

I’ve just received an email this morning from the BBC DVD Support people. They’ve asked for proof of purchase and said they should be able to get a new booklet out within 2 – 3 weeks. The delay in reply was around investigating the printing error.

    • The Inquisitor

      March 17th, 2021 - 2:15pm

Can confirm, just received the BBC email regarding confirmation of replacements, I already supplied my HMV order confirmation email and they expect a replacement in 2-3 weeks.

If you have yet to send an email, make sure to add proof of purchase and your address in the message.

Some information on season 7 which might interest some.
Fantom did a zoom call event for the season 8 boxset tonight and someone asked about how the process for “The mind of evil” etc was.
Paul Vanezis mentioned how for this set he tested “The ambassadors of death” to see if most of season 8s not so great looking episodes could be updated/cleaner and there was some success.
So I like to think that we won’t be waiting that long for season 7, however like Chris Chapman hinted at, the budget does go on the restoration too so for that season well probably not get too many new special features due to its biggest selling point being the update.
Sadly my question of the possibility of a wilderness years or new series boxsets wasn’t asked but a “will a DVD version be available” did, which was alittle annoying.

I think even if the colour restoration is easier now for season 7, they will still do season 9 and 11. I don’t think they will make less special features for season 7 due to the restoration its probably more due to the fact that none of the main cast for 7 are still around so it’s harder to do things for that season. I know that Paul Vanezis and his team are hoping to get a copy of the film for the main fight scene in the curse of Peladon and a copy of the film for the invasion of the dinosaurs location footage so that might cause season 7 coming first while they wait but I doubt it

Well I have watched all the stories and the all the new extras. Terror of the Autons looks beautiful ,a much improved picture quality. Sadly The Daemons hasn’t seen any improvement in the picture quality , still with washed out colours . Still a great boxset , I look forward to seeing what the next but one will be , hopefully another Tom. On a amusing note ,
I love the high tech look of Colony in Space, paper calendar’s, paper files and filing cabinets!

I’m still on the special features!!!

Done all the Behind the Sofas, Devil’s Weekend and Direct Route, the Direct Route was excellent such a brilliant production, quite epic too, brilliant camera work and a decent score too.
Watching ‘Living with Levine’ now, obviously seen it before but it’s a classic
Hoping to possibly squeeze ‘Terror of the Autons’ tonight if it doesn’t get too late

I’m watching The Daemons now I agree with Ken, massive improvement on the studio and some of the film too, parts are still a bit grainy but in terms of improvement it’s a great job. The colour is quite striking too.
