It’s more busier here so I posted it here instead of the macra page

I read elsewhere that the eventual plan is the re-align the releases of the US box sets with the UK sets. Has anyone else heard this. It’s been rough during the several month waits for season 10 and the Macra Terror. I’m feeling better about the shorter wait for season 23 and hope the same will happen for season 26.

I read on another forum that the eventual plan is to re-align the release dates for the UK and Us releases. Has anyone else heard anything similar? These several month waits (with no new content) for season 10 and the Macra Terror in the US have been painful to say the least. I’m glad that the wait for season 23 is a little less and hope the same will go for season 26.

I wish we knew if Nu Who was going to be included in ‘The Collection’ range as well. I saw Series 4 on Steelbook in hmv yesterday and thought to myself should I buy it even though I don’t have the first 3? Or is it really that likely they will get a further release on blu -ray?

I thinks that be the money grabbing mentality of the bbc these days because they have little else nowadays bar dw to rake it in on – so I’d say yes there will be even if they say no there won’t because I know they’re thinking about it

    • Richard

      September 13th, 2019 - 3:53pm

I think you’re probably right there, they have no other big ranges like Doctor Who to cash in on. And as the saying goes something better usually comes along if you wait long enough. But i’m Not sure I would buy Series 11 with Jodie as I only liked a couple of them.

    • Gordon

      September 13th, 2019 - 4:07pm

The team that works on the sets have said they would love to work on them but they are far too busy working on the classic series sets to even think about them at present. There definitely is scope for new extras so I can see that being looked at in another 4-5ish Year’s time when the blu ray range starts to wind down. It’s probably a good long way off. On the plus side it could give them a couple of extra years to beef up some of the animated stories in seasons 3-5 to make the eventual box sets of those seasons feel more complete

    • Anonymous

      September 15th, 2019 - 1:28pm

Look I am eagerly waiting the day when these sets are finished and I get to die happy knowing they can’t make any more sets.

    • Gordon

      September 15th, 2019 - 3:23pm

Well the collection will be done but the animations will In all likelihood still be ongoing as there is no way all stories will be animated in the next 5 or so years. I can see them rereleasing some of the hartnell/Troughton seasons when they are complete with animations but the only real difference will be the box will be bigger to accommodate the extra discs and the new stories added will have different disc labels to match the rest of the discs in the set. There also are the possibility of complete doctor sets and even a complete saga set including everything. Just because the sets will all have been released doesn’t mean there won’t be any more sets

By the end of this year the number of seasons remaining are as follows

    6 60s
    4 Jon
    5 tom
    5 jnt era

(Wilderness years isn’t a season and going by recent comments isn’t currently commissioned or scheduled though it could be in future)

If seems pretty balanced. If the release rate of 4 a year sticks I can see it being 1 from each era every year going forward

I think that’s a safe bet yes, given the amount for the black and white Seasons it may dip to three a year possibly because they’re almost twice the length and definitely a lot more work to upscale.
Given the amount of random material from the wilderness era I think it’s likely that we will see a release for it midway through the range in a couple years

What’s been rumoured for next year so far? I would assume there’ll be a set released in February or March 2020, depending on when The Faceless Ones gets released.

    • Gordon

      September 13th, 2019 - 11:56am

14 for february/March is the favoured rumour. As for the rest 6 at some point seems an obvious release seeing as it’s pat troughton’s 100th birthday year and I kind of expect the faceless ones will be out roughly the same week as his birthday. Peter should be due another set so either 20 or 21. Jon should probably get another set so probably be either 9 or 11.

we should definitely see season one during 2023 but here’s hoping that they give us season two beforehand say 2021/22. Lastly, i think the wilderness years set will come out around 2021 as it will be the twenty-fifth anniversary of the mcgann film

    • Gordon

      September 10th, 2019 - 9:33pm

Will be interesting to see how they represent space pirates if season 6 is happening next year. The blu ray box set won’t have the budget for a fully Animated space pirates and it would need to be released on its own first and need a bit of a gap between stand alone release and release in the collection as to not cannibalise sales. There also are no telesnaps so a telesnap recon is gonna be a hard 1 to make.

    • DPHill

      September 10th, 2019 - 10:45pm

      Let’s hope they’ve found it then 🙂
      (High hopes)
It will be interesting to see what they do for the sixties because this is the easiest Troughton set to do – and that’s still, as you rightly point out, difficult

    • DPHill

      September 10th, 2019 - 10:50pm

      Also Flint Johnson,
If you wanna be real picky, we will have all classic doctors on some form of Blu-ray come December with doctors 3-7 on their season set, 1&2 on the three doctors and 8 on the Blu-ray of the film a couple years back (I know this is not what you mean though)

    • ChrisP

      September 11th, 2019 - 12:30am

I am guessing season 6 cos (1) one of the most complete 60s seasons along with season 2 and (2) it’s entirely 625 line so presumably the upscales will be better than 1 to 5?
So maybe that gives it the edge over season 2?

But something 60s needs to come soon or it’s all being saved for the end…

    • The Flying Shark

      September 11th, 2019 - 6:55am

Seeing as the Doctor and co are absent for a lot of the Space Pirates, I wonder if they might make be able to refilm their own version with new actors and sets? We don’t know what some characters looked like so there’s nothing to contradict anything. For the Doctor and co, telesales from existing episodes can be used, maybe?

    • Gordon

      September 11th, 2019 - 11:16am

A good chunk of the cast are seen in ep 2 so they can’t just cast anyone. There is 14 cast members in total plus sets costumes and models to create plus it’s 2 hours of footage to film it’s unlikely to be affordable on the box set budget. I was watching the loose cannon version of space pirates and it seems most of the stills are taken from the existing ep1. It’s actually pretty watchable but it can’t hide how dull the story is. But to be fair I don’t think even animation could disguise that. If it was clearable and included in the s6 set I wouldn’t be too disappointed though

    • MJS

      September 12th, 2019 - 2:20pm

I think if the DO animate Space Pirates, it will be exclusive to the blu ray box set, thus making it a Unique Selling Point maximising sales. Maybe separately released sometime after

    • Gordon

      September 12th, 2019 - 9:28pm

Going by what Chris chapman said the animated releases have to be released on its own first before being included in the collection. Due to how expensive animation is It has to recoup costs first before being included in a box set

And fantastic packaging with gorgous artwork. I import the UK sets and aside from the two weeks it takes to get here it’s a greart deal to me.

£10.99 years ago for one VHS story and no extras puts it into perspective a bit, these are great value for what you get.

      September 12th, 2019 - 12:29pm

You can purchase the stories for this season on dvd for £28 (assuming you don’t want the special edition of Fenric) so the difference is only £11-for which you get commemorative packaging, an upscaled picture, a few extra featurettes, extended cuts and, God willing, a version of Ghost Light that actually makes sense. If you want this season and don’t already own the dvds then I think that’s fair. It’s certainly better value for money than the season 23 boxset, given that you can purchase The Trial of a Timelord dvd boxset for only £13-a third of the price.

    • MIKSK89

      September 12th, 2019 - 1:41pm

Rob.G you do know that the DVD releases of Both ‘The Curse of Fenric’ and ‘Battlefield’ come with the Extended Movie versions, the only ones you don’t get are the VHS versions.

But i do agree, i have the germany 7th doctor boxset so i did not have to worry about that but that and my copy of robots of death as well as the steelbooks of POTD, Macra Terror and Shada are not leaving my collection due to collector reasoning… and the idea of wether these sets are worth it, isnt down to content, its the same reason that there have been 3 different collectors sets for the Alien Movies at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment – every new release gives the oppurtunity to uncover more rarities from the BBC Archives.

    Three different versions of Battlefield
Three different versions of Curse of Fenric
Two different versions of Ghost Light

Overkill, not needed and just filling the discs with extraneous material that most fans wont be particularly interested in. What about More than 30 years? Search of Science? DIT? All much more appropriate uses of discspace.

Why not have lots of different versions there’re is only four stories in the season they need to make it worth the money it means we can watch a story in different ways also the 90s stuff will probably be on the movie box set

      September 6th, 2019 - 1:47am

Two of the things people have most requested ever since the rumours of a 26 blu ray set was the vhs edits of battlefield/curse of fenric and an extended cut of ghost light. To quote mark ayres we are giving them exactly what they want. You might not be interested in having 2 or 3 different cuts but there are plenty of fans who are. It’s not like these are taking the space of other extras as they are featured on the battlefield/fenric/ghost light discs and having stuff like more than 30 years/dit would look out of place on that discs. The likes of dit more than 30 years are more likely to appear on a potential wilderness years set anyway and that’s if dit is ever clearable. Cin is asking an extortionate amount of money (60k) just for usage. Search out science might still appear. This press release and trailer is about hyping up the new special features not highlighting the old that most of the buyers will already own. The full listing isn’t due till about a month before release. If it’s not on there it could be another candidate for a potential wilderness years set

This could be the last hard copies we get of these stories , because of streaming taking over, so why not have as many versions of the story as they have to offer. And they also offer an insight into what they originally intended without having to cut scenes for run time.

    • Danger Dan

      September 7th, 2019 - 3:34am

Instead of two similar movie length cuts of these two stories, I’m sure a lot of people like me would have loved an episodic version of the special editions of Battlefield and The Curse of Fenric.

I’m so glad they are doing extended episodes of Season 23 and wish they had done the same on 26 (even with differing quality of material like the Ghost Light workprint).

    • the4thdoc42

      September 7th, 2019 - 5:27am

That’s what the VHS cuts are. There’s the transmitted versions, the VHS cuts (episodic extended) and the DVD cuts (omnibus extended). That’s why the Blu-Ray has both.

I’m sorry but what on earth could you sell on a Wilderness Years Boxset. The TV Movie, Scream of the Shalka, 30 Years (maybe), Search Out science, The Curse Of Fatal Death, Dimensions in the Time, An Animation Of Lost in the Dark Dimension. Hold on I just listed everything they could.

    • Anonymous

      September 7th, 2019 - 12:00pm

I mean…. you just listed quite a lot. Movie, Shalka, and 30 Years are on 3 separate DVD releases with their own respective special features. When you additionally take into account newly filmed special features that’s about 4 or 5 discs worth. Admittedly its a little thinner than some other releases but with the additional content they’ve managed to cram on to season 23 and 26 I’m sure they’d manage to bulk up a release like this to compensate. Don’t crush the dream, I’m holding out to see that 3D rendered McGann TARDIS interior on the Menu screen!!!

    • Gordon

      September 8th, 2019 - 1:00am

There’s plenty they could do for a wilderness years set. Here’s a rough idea

      Disc 1-2 1990-1995

Wilderness years documentary (ported from the TV movie)
Series 27 writers room: (s23 has a documentary on the unmade s23 so the unmade season 27 deserves the same)
Search out science (if not on s26)
      Resistance is useless
Mini documentaries from 30th anniversary repeats
Lost in the dark dimension documentary (animation being included is unlikely unless it gets its own animated release separately first).
30 years in the tardis (original 50 min tv edit)
More than 30 years in the tardis (extended edit)
      Who Peter part 2
Various blue peter appearances connections from 1990-95

Dimensions in time is extremely unlikely to be cleared but in the unlikely event it’s clearable:

      Dimensions in time
      Dimensions in time (extended edition)
Alternate scene option – Big Ron
      Children in Need links
      Noel’s House Party links
      Tomorrow’s World feature
      Out-takes & extended sequences
      Behind the scenes footage
      Optional 5.1 surround sound
      Audio commentary
      Behind the Sofa

      Disc 3-4 1996

      TV movie
Both us and uk broadcast edits
      Night of the doctor
      Original extras that weren’t moved
      Behind the sofa
Mathew sweet interview with Paul McGann
In depth Documentary on the leekly bible.
Brand new making of focusing on the actors experience of the movie
Bidding adieu (if they can come to an agreement with Bbv)
      Optional cgi
      5.1 mix

      Disc 5 1997-99

Destiny of the doctor links and tv ad
Sylvester McCoy links from 35 who on bbc choice

Curse of fatal death (if clearable)
Behind the scenes documentary from the vhs
      Brand new making of
      Behind the sofa

Doctor who night from 1999 (there is about 100 mins worth of stuff that could be releasable)
      Blue peter footage from 96-99

      Disc 6-8 the animated webcasts
Chris chapman implied that the animated webcasts would be best on a potential wilderness years set so am placing them here

Real time/Death comes to time (disc 6)
      Shada 2003 (7)
      Scream of the Shalka (8)

Documentary on the history of the webcasts
      In conversation Richard e grant
      Original Shalka dvd extras

      Disc 9 2003

      The story of doctor who.
Uk gold who at 40 links
      Doctor forever series
      Blue peter footage from 2000-2004

If the previous 5 box sets didn’t have the era at the time logo then why would this?

Mark Ayers has said that the ghost light work print runs about 10 mins longer than broadcast (about 80 mins) and is episodic. The reason there is no extended cut for survival is that there is no deleted scenes to do an extended cut. To quote mark: There are no real “deleted scenes” to speak of. Mainly scene extensions. And it’s the one story in the season that benefits enormously from the tighter edit (IMHO) so there is no point in an extended version. The “deleted and alternative scenes” package will, however, be remastered.

Not really related to this specifically, but is anyone else buying one of these box sets for each doctor, because that’s what I am doing and wonder if anyone else is doing that also.

Thats a good idea, I am getting season 26 for the 7th doctor and then getting one each for the rest, I may get all the seasons in black and white as well.

I very much doubt this would happen, but I would love a B&M figure next year of Ace from the trailer, as she’s the only companion from the classics not currently represented in the B&M line. Could be part of a Returning Companions set, with Ace made from a new head on the suited lady from Primeval, Jo Jones from Death of the Doctor made with a new head on the lady from Primeval with the white jacket, and Rose as the moment with perhaps the cat nun body? Just a few suggestions. I know SJA rights may be tricky for Jo, but maybe there’s some leeway, seeing as she’s originally a Who character plus Big Finish have used the pictures on their dramas without presumably paying for the separate SJA licence?

I’m sorry but can some one tell me what exactly a workprint is.

It’s a rough cut featuring all the takes (scenes) they might have but not all the effects, incidental music etc. They can then decide what to use, what might need re-filming etc, etc. It won’t be in as good picture/sound quality as the other versions though unless someone else knows different…

I think it’s a sort of rough put-together of different picture sources – e.g. sections of broadcast version, bits of the ‘71’ edits (the name given to first edits, usually a bit longer than those broadcast episodes, or with some scenes in a slightly different order) and rough footage with a burned-in timecoding clock running across the bottom of the screen. Ghost Light is known to only have a mosh mash of different sources like that, I.e. they don’t have ‘ clean’ extra / longer-running scenes without timecode strips they can’t remove. Hence a ‘workprint’ – a sort of demonstration level extended edition where the picture source and quality will jump around a bit, as opposed to a fully polished seamless edition.

It’s something they would like to do but not something that is currently planned. Maybe in 2025 when the classic run is finished

      September 5th, 2019 - 1:49am

I have a feeling they will wrap up the Classic Series, including a Wilderness Years set, and then do revamped New Series stuff. By then they may have actually completed the Steelbox sets, and everyone can get up and arms that they’d have to buy them again for new features. That tends to be how it goes. I’ve still got the original DVDs, but if they genuinely do the Collection for those seasons, I will likely upgrade. For now, I will stick with what I have.

Season 10 was already released in Australia, the only website I was able to get if from has been Zavvi.

Zavvi do indeed ship to Australia and they are one of the few ways to get the UK editions of the sets, which I prefer after Roadshow in Australia annoyingly released the season 18 set in inferior packaging. However, a huge problem with Zavvi is they simply throw these sets into large padded bags and as a result I received two of the previous Collection box sets in really bad condition. After a lot of chasing up Zavvi and insisting they do the right thing, I was able to get full refunds for the box sets and the postage, but they make it difficult and on both occasions tried to convince me to just accept a refund of 15% rather than a full refund, which is absurd. On both occasions I was lucky enough to find replacement copies via eBay sellers, but I would really just prefer Zavvi not package these box sets so carelessly as other blu-rays I buy from them are fine. I would recommend that if anybody else does receive goods from Zavvi that are in less than immaculate condition, persist with getting a refund from them and ask them to improve their packaging.

    • Gordon

      September 3rd, 2019 - 10:55pm

the original VHS releases of Fenric and Battlfield were extended edits of the stories, rather than their broadcast versions. These editions primarily just slotted in a few new scenes and not weren’t reworked from ground up.

For the DVDs, new Special Edition edits were produced, which featured new colour grading, FX and extended/new scenes, some of which weren’t in the previous VHS releases, and presented it as a feature-length edit, cutting out the opening and closing titles. Some people wanted the vhs version included as well as the dvd special edition as they prefer that edit. To quote mark Ayres “We are giving people exactly what they asked for”.
