I like the Remembrance specialedition, but thought the happiness patrol had lots of unnecessary footage added and made it drag. Prefer the original as it’s a tighter edited story

With runtimes, you have to take into account that the Silver Nemesis VHS version runtime also includes all the copyright notices/BBC logo/Also on Video promo at the beginning of Part One and the end of Part Three. Like The Tom Baker Years and The Colin Baker Years, it’s presented as a full VHS rip.

Thanks SVH was wondering about that makes sense.

    October 29th, 2024 - 9:53am

Slight niggle: the booklet needed proof-read a bit more. Silver Nemesis was three episodes broadcast in 1987, was it? Also, the capitalising of all words in the title is wrong. Remembrance Of The Daleks really should read Remembrance of the Daleks, for example.

An onscreen caption on one of the old DVD docs on the set claim that one of the stories (might be Silver Nemesis, can’t recall) was broadcast in 1987. This kind of mistake has been happening for years.

Yes mine has too, and not straight – thinner at the top than the bottom. Similar 1-2mm on S22 for me, not S2, and also on S26 but from the front not the back.

Doesn’t look too bad when in their J-cards and amongst the mass of the collection. The differing greys (yellowish, bluish or purplish or plain grey – ymmv) used on the spines are more obvious to my eyes.

  • Rory

    October 29th, 2024 - 8:48am

Curses. Mine arrived yesterday, but the case was in a bit a shape, with a massive dent in the upper corner and a couple of tears on the edges. Packaging was totally fine, so it was obviously like that when it was packed.

It always annoys me when items get sent out in that condition. Back when I worked retail anything in that state wouldn’t even get to the shelves unless it went straight to the remainder bin.

On the subject of sixties sets, maybe they should just issued with photo reconstructions as long as there plenty of retrospective features. By all means use animations if already available but don’t hold any up if none have been produced. Season Three is for the die-hards anyhow. One day we might get an animated Dalek recon from that season.

Just watching the location footage of Remembrance of the Daleks. The Daleks are all set up under the bridge for a big explosion. A black bird flies behind them and lands on a window sill, looking in for food by the looks of it. The next thing a huge explosion goes off. He tries to fly but just falls lifeless to the ground. Upsetting to watch really.

It looked like the bang gave him a heart attack. Nothing hit him. As he took off to fly his heart just seemed to give up and he plummetted to the ground. It’s the same bang I think that attracted the emergency services.

The special edition of happiness patrol absolute blew me away. New effects and scenes have elevated it. I’d almost call it a stone cold classic now instead of underated which I called it previously. Unless I’m watching the production subtitles or listening to the commentary I doubt I’m going to bother with it again.

      October 28th, 2024 - 4:28pm

I’ve always loved Happiness Patrol, and it was highly deserving of an upgrade to make it less studio-bound and more like Graeme Curry’s excellent novelisation.

S25 as a whole is vastly underrated, with usually only Remembrance getting any praise. Hopefully this set will help people realise just how good the whole season is.

    • Lewis James

      October 30th, 2024 - 2:56pm

Happiness patrol SE is way better than the original, there’s a much better pace, a chance for the story to develop properly & the new effects of the planet really give it a totally different & better feel.
I’m really blown away by this SE editions so far, probably the best set & it’s great to be able to finally see the stories in full as they originally conceived & meant to be without the 25 minute edit constraints.
Really looking forward to silver nemesis & greatest show, I’m hoping they’ll be equally greatly improved by these SEs. I’m really impressed so far.

    • Lewis James

      October 30th, 2024 - 3:43pm

I love the SE edition of Happiness patrol it’s got so much more time for the story to develop & the new effects make the planet feel much more rounded.
I’m really loving these SEs I think it really benefits the stories as it gives us a chance to see them in full as they were originally conceived & meant to be seen without the 25 minute edit time constraints.
Really hoping silver nemisis & greatest show are equally improved & benefit by the SE versions.

    • SVH

      November 5th, 2024 - 12:11pm

Lewis James: They we’re originally conceived and “meant to be seen” as 25 minute episodes. The reason there is more material is due to over-writing in the scripts, which is preferred to scripts/episodes drastically underrunning. I completely agree that these extended versions are utterly fantastic (for me, the extended episodes are the jewels in the crowns of these new box sets), but they are not how they were meant to be seen.

Such a pity the stories with Keff McCulloch scores could t have had a new (optional) music score, I think the stories would have benefited greatly as the music for some of the stories os absolutely dire.

I have. It’s not been remastered or recreated (as with the repeat edits such as The Deamons, etc). It looks OK, perfectly watchable, but it’s not as sharp or clear as the other episodes in the box set. It’s similar to the Tom Baker Years and The Colin Baker Years – it’s the full video with copyright notice, BBC logo and ‘Other BBC videos’ trailer.

Anyone else have glitches in the Remembrance studio footage, when the girl says “Repairs on time controller almost complete” at around 48’47”? I can’t quite tell if it’s a problem with the original tape capture or a disc glitch. Thanks.

Thanks, Gordon. I don’t know who did the original VHS capture, but there are a couple of quirks that you don’t usually see on material handled by the DW regulars.

    • Timelord1944

      October 28th, 2024 - 4:40pm

My set has since arrived and looking at the discs many of them are scratched in places as if they have been badly pressed. Might explain the issue with the Happiness Patrol disc. Might just be a bad scratch not a fault in mastering.

    • Rex F

      October 28th, 2024 - 9:31pm

Unfortunately discs pressed in Europe are starting to have an increasing number of scratches, and although it’s far from North American levels yet the titles affected always seem to be those that don’t just have a regular case. I know two Radiance titles caused problems for the company owner, and there was a big premium box set affected (might have been something like a Columbia Classics). Bearing in mind Blu-ray is hard to scratch, I don’t know how much pressure they must be applying to them or what kind of surface they’redragging them on.

Doult very much black and white ones would be made straight away tbh only 6 which has been rumoured so long and 21 more defo for 80s run then the following year I feel could be more a Tom baker one with another set which might be more another hartnal maybe which would only mean 13,16 if possible I dk if they would do one all the time cause off no animations recent either

Arrived! That’s my weekend sorted. Although I have a bunch of tasks to do, so I won’t be able to crack it open until this evening

There Clear Plastic Cases that will protect the Cardboard Sleeves of the Dr Who Blu-Ray Collection. Or the Steelbooks that are prone to Scratches. They come from Steelbook Central, an Online store. Hope this Helps.
