I might have missed comments further back, but I’ve always enjoyed Gordon’s thoughts and facts on the latest release, have you had a chance to watch the new boxset and if so, what did you think?

I’m nearly finished it. Just got the commentaries to finish off. Having an absolute blast with this season.

Loving the new Restorations of dalek invasion of earth and time meddler. The best they have looked since broadcast in my opinion. The crusade looks pretty good considering it’s half missing. I’m very happy with how the lion looks. It’s never going to look perfect but baring a better print being discovered it’s the best it’s looked since it was rediscovered in 1999. The recons for ep 2 and 4 work really well and quite easy to follow and having production subtitles for those 2 episodes are a lovely bonus. As for the rest of the episodes they aren’t as much of a jump from the DVDs but considering they were pretty late in the dvd range it’s to be expected.

The absolute highlight for special features is looking for David and is the heart of this box set. Beautifully and delicately handled and presented by Toby hadoke. Another Chris chapman winner.

The collectors is a fascinating look round various merch from the 1960’s. Nice to see the who shop make an appearance plus I really like Emily cook as a host.

The season 2 overview is good but could have been done with a good 10-15 minutes longer focused more on stories that don’t already have making ofs (planet, crusade, museum, meddler) but I get that there isn’t very much people still around to talk about it.

The Maureen o Brien in conversation was fascinating. I found out so much about her. The William Russell one I found a little harder to watch. I’m glad that we have it but I feel Mathew was hand holding him a lot round the interview. I found out after watching it he does have dementia which I did suspect from watching it (I’ve got 2 family members that have it and trying to jog memories feels quite similar) Tbh unless they have banked other materials I suspect it will be his last major involvement in the blu ray range.

The behind the sofas are quite fun this season. I do kind of wish they had done behind the sofas for all the eps but I get they didn’t have time to do all 9 stories. Shame really as I feel both planet of giants and and space museum could have been done with an extra feature each to beef up those discs.

It’s amazing how much pdfs there are. Took me a week to flick through it all.

Sure there isn’t animation for eps 2 and 4 of crusade and there isn’t as much stuff as other sets but overall it’s such an amazing set.

Heartbreaking news about William Russell, Gordon,my own dear late mother was sliding into full dementia before her death in 2006. I was a carer for her in her last sad year. Yes David Whittaker piece is probably the best documentary on the range of Blu ray box sets so far. I very much doubt he would have written for the series again if he had not died at such at early age. But who knows what wonderful novels he could have written. He one of the true greats of the series.

Something a bit concerning. Killing eve is now on Disney + and there is no sign of a DVD release of series 4 (yes it was poor) but even so the first three seasons were released. Could this be an indication of the future of who releases? I do hope not.

    • Rex Farrel

      December 22nd, 2022 - 12:21am

Killing Eve is an independent production so rights are up for grabs. Universal were releasing it in the UK but they’ve cut back on TV titles and yielded rights to others (inc. Acorn, ITV, Spirit Ent). I suspect that no one wanted the rights, at least for the fee being demanded. In the US the BBC released seasons 1 and 2, Acorn season 3 and AMC season four – suggesting that the rights are just expensive or sales figures disappointing and the series repeatedly dropped.

That’s a relief. My partner had read it wasn’t getting a UK release. Loved series 1 but it lost the plot by 4, the books ended a lot better than the TV series. Just letting my concern about who releases get the better of me!

The Universal series 4, which I’d not spotted before, has subs for three other countries – clearly foreign sales still make it work for them. Anyhow, see here: https://www.bbc.com/mediacentre/bbcstudios/2022/bbc-studios-spirit-entertainment-announce-uk-sales-distribution-deal (Clearly Who is still important to the BBC on physical media, even if written pre-Disney+.)

I personally would have always called them all “Series” Bobby, I don’t like the term “season” myself as I view it as a bit Americanised – thats just me.

They have however all been branded “Season X” up to this point, including this one – however it seems the voice recording by Peter introduces this as “Series 2” at the disc menu

I’ve not watched any of mine yet so cant confirm

I would guess they got the dialogue recorded wrong and rather than re record – left it as it is?

The whole audio navigation thing annoys me on these releases because they pay lip service by adding the menus but leave visually impaired viewers to enjoy programmes that are full of bangs and wooshes that could be anything. I suppose they’d say that the production of audio description tracks would push up the price and upset fully-sighted viewers. But this is Dr Who – there are plenty of talented fans who would probably really enjoy creating AD tracks for minimal cost as a kind of public service.

    Just a few thoughts occured today;

Would it be possible, over 2023, to announce three Doctor Who Collection sets? The third being more of a surprise at the end of the Year.

The other thought was packaging. There seriously needs to be a rethink on both the retailer’s packing, but also for the Collection manufacturing itself to actually try and use some decent glue to hold the disc trays down (above The Doctor’s face). The glue is clearly cheap. Why go through the effort of carefully assembling such a valuable product with such weak glue?

Finally I then realised that we’ve been through massive delays throughout the releases of the most recent sets, making me wonder if the huge gap of time has just allowed a third boxset to be produced, hidden in plain sight!

To think otherwise would be pretty boring and lame for a 60th anniversary.

Agreed, unless there’s further serious real World problems (hope not), then it would surely be Seasons 9 + 20 before Autumn of next Year.

Imagine a third Christmas release, with a 60 years badge on it. It would be the best surprise for it to be Season 1, but it would feel unbelievable if it were any of Season 3-6.

Hopefully we will get at least three releases next year. It seems likely it will be 9 next followed by 20 and a Tom Baker smart money seems to be on season 15 . Please not season 25 . I am still hoping for season 6 next year too.

Well Bobby, if read my post in the past you know I am no fan of Baker C and McCoy. I am not saying it should not be released but not next year. If as seems likely that we get season 20 , which I look forward to ,we should get a another Tom and hopefully the first Pat , the first Doctor I remember and still my favorite Doctor. Enjoy what ever Who you like and have very Merry Christmas.

    • Erato

      December 21st, 2022 - 1:11pm

McCoy fan or not, surely you can’t deny that Remembrance of the Daleks is superb? I imagine that one will appear as an extended version on Season 25 owing to all the deleted scenes that still exist for it. I love The Greatest Show in the Galaxy too.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      December 21st, 2022 - 1:42pm

I have a special place in my heart for McCoy as he was my childhood Doctor and 25 was the first series I watched on TV but that aside I can’t see another 60s next year if we assume 9 and 20 are bankers it’s too much content, the 80s are easier to work on and 25 is only 14 episodes unlike 6 which is around 40.

    • Samuel

      December 21st, 2022 - 2:04pm

      @Bobby

      Realistically I think you’re correct.

For me, Remembrance of the Daleks, is one of the best Doctor Who stories ever made. Some of the best scripts, acting, action, fx, music, cliffhangers. The show today could seriously do with learning a good thing or two from it on a technical level.

The rest of Season 25 is admittedly a guilty pleasure of mine, so would be a nice completion of the McCoy era (barring spinoffs + TV Movie, assuming would be in the Paul McGann Wilderness Years Collection Boxset)

PS. What I would like, just sneakily slotted in on a Season 25 disc, would be a little trailer, announcing that work is in progress for another 60’s Doctor Who season. Just a tantalising little glimpse. Just having confirmation that another 60’s is coming along the pipeline would be the icing on the cake.

    • Prof Horner

      December 21st, 2022 - 3:43pm

Well I am sorry to disagree but Remembrance of Daleks is I think probably the most overrated serial in the history of the series . I understand where you are coming from Bobby. I but I remember watching the series I love been humiliated in the late eighties by BBC. The series fell a long way in that decade. While I appreciate some some of the stories and production values of seasons 25 and 26 , particularly Curse of Fenric , I simply find McCoy unwatchable. Hopefully at least we will get three seasons next year . I also agree with the number of episodes in season 6 (more than the the the McCoy era put together) and the work needed on it ,may make it unlikely for next year. I hope we get another Tom Baker after season 20. Maybe we will get season 6 and 25 in 2024. But as I said there is a lot of Doctor Who out there, enjoy whatever Doctor you want. We are all united in the love of this magical series. Whatever version you prefer.

      December 21st, 2022 - 4:00pm

Bobby, I’m exactly the same. Sylvester was my childhood Doctor and I started watching in 1988 and Season 25, which I love.

I’ve also met him and Sophie twice now.

I hope we get the extended version of Silver Nemesis on the set along with the making of that came with the vhs.

Remembrance of the Daleks is, in my opinion, the best story of classic who.

Lee Binding has a soft spot for 7th Doctor too.

    • D84

      December 21st, 2022 - 4:36pm

I would imagine the intention will be to deliver extended versions of every story in S25 in one form or another, either omnibus editions, deleted scene’s reinserted or even a “work print” like on S26 – They have done that on S22 – S26 already so i cant see the mould being changed dramatically at this point – although I could be wrong.

I do sincerely hope we see a Wilderness Years set at some point too. the booklet on S26 certainly seems to allude to that not being the last one

      One Day ……………………

    • Bobby Fackrell

      December 21st, 2022 - 6:04pm

The Greatest Show in the Galaxy should not be a guilty pleasure Samuel its a classic!

Can’t defend Silver Nemesis though but it will be a nice tribute to the late Queen and perhaps a ‘Royalty and The Doctor’ documentary?

Prof if we are talking over-rated Classic Who I vote Pyramids of Mars, don’t get me wrong it’s good and the Hinchcliffe years are the golden era I have no problem with that at all but it’s not in the same league as some of the other stories from that era regarded as classics like Talons, Robots, Deadly, Morbius, Zygons, etc etc

I also agree with the 80s decline, but that’s largely down to Saward for me. Series 18 and 19 are really good but it derails massively from 20 apart from a few one off classics. However Andrew Cartmel breathed new life into the show, 24 was dodge but not as bad most of the Colin Baker years, 25 is a mixed bag but clear improvement and statement of intent and 26 is a classic, I actually think if 27 was made it would not have been as good as 26, the 80s started well and ended well the Saward and JNT bitching resulted in a mess in the middle, JNT stayed too long,

    • Martino

      December 21st, 2022 - 7:11pm

All these youngers talking about Sylvester McCoy being their childhood Doctor makes me feel quite ancient! I only saw some of Fenric and Remembrance on transmission, as I was in my (third) job and didn’t have a home recorder (I had stopped watching the show regularly with Four to Doomsday), but I recall fellow geeks speculating about the white and gold Daleks being ‘good’ Daleks after seeing some advance photos, and being very impressed with the fresh-looking Dalek props and period setting. This is probably in my top 5 favourite seasons, and would be a set I’d grab.

      December 21st, 2022 - 11:19pm

I disagree with you Bobby on pyramids of Mars and I am not a fan of Brain of Morbus.even on it’s first transmission. Each to his own. I hope one day we will get the true unbiased story of what happened to series in the nineteen eighties . Keep enjoying what ever Doctor Who you like.

Keff McCullouch for me is also a Doctor Who icon. McCullouch delivered such distinctive music to the show. So much of the McCoy era for me is McCullouch.

On a slightly seperate note; When looking for Christmas songs on the loudspeakers at work yesterday, ‘Doctor in Distress’ appeared on recommend. Never heard it before, pressed play, full volume. Loved it!

I thought the recon was very good. Due to the nature of the footage available and how the title/writer’s credit for episode 3 appears at the very beginning of the episode, I thought the way they had to effectively ‘rewrite’ the cliffhanger to episode 2 ‘The Knight of Jaffa’ was very clever.

Finally got my replacement copy for the original order that went missing last week. Arrived undamaged in a box, not a bag thankfully. Opened it to check everything ok, looks ok but not had a chance to watch anything yet. One question – my box had an extended side so the back of it was bent a bit and the fold that is normally on the front when you open it is on the back. Not sure if it’s a factory error with the printing on each side, has anyone else got the same with theirs? It’s not damaged, just curious if they are all manufactured like that.

Watching the William Russell interview now, firstly fascinating what a legend but secondly the clip from ‘The Aztecs’ looked really clear, I know it got makeover a few years ago but it looks to me like this could be another remaster perhaps series one is in the works?

They could be working on any number of sets at the same time. I still think season 1 is a long way off. Maybe end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025. I could be very wrong though obviously.

9 and 20 are almost bankers for the next two. They have said the anniversary will not affect the schedule and the fan rumour of series one for November 2023 is not likely but that could still be a double bluff.

I agree it’s not likely to be next year but it would be welcome

Dalek Invasion of the Earth looks and sounds gorgeous it was worth the wait!!!

I agree. It’s pretty much common knowledge now that seasons 9 and 20 are the next two, although we could be wrong again but I doubt it.

I’m happy with whatever we get. I hope they decide to integrate the 2005 revival series into the collection. That’d be amazing and they’d make a lot more money from fans. They should probably wait another year or two before deciding to do that though.

I’m up to The Romans. This is my first time ever watching season 2 and I’m really enjoying it. William Hartnell is a fantastic Doctor and I really like the stories of this season. My favourites so far have been The Dalek Invasion of Earth and The Rescue. I can’t wait to get to The Web Planet and The Time Meddler.

I had a quick listen to the enhanced sound for ‘Dalek Invasion Of Earth’ the other day. It didn’t sound that much different to the original audio. Did anyone-else notice any differences?

Got my copy of Season 2 thankfully undamaged. Have only looked at the doc about the collectibles with Emily Cook so far, which was brilliant. So much care and attention goes into these sets. I would love it if the same team that produces these could also release the new WHO Series 1-10. Maybe one day…

Finally arrived from Amazon and it is wonderful! It was in the paper bag but thankfully had survived and is in mint condition.

Can’t wait to get stuck into all the fabulous extras. Hartnell is just so good and sometimes, I think, not given enough credit for the range he gets into his performances as the Doctor and how it changes over the three series.

Sadly mine from Amazon had lots of damage. Case dented, flaps that cover the booklet had huge creases, (which must be poor quality control rather than Amazons minimal packaging) and the tray had pulled away ripping the back. Sent back for a replacement.

The big question (for those whose set isn’t delayed) – what does the new restoration of The Time Meddler look like please? And DIOE, since that had to be done from scratch as well (the dvd was only VidFIRE mark I).

To answer my own question, Time Meddler is good work spoiled. Great clean up of the film damage, nice replacement of the foreign censorship cut, but someone still thinks it’s the 90s when it comes to noise reduction and has turned it up to 11. Even the 35mm title film has been blasted, and there’s sometimes so little texture that we have posterisation and banding. The remade credits are also still inconsistent, and still leave gel-like blobs and/or have cardboard cut-out effects. They get so much right, and yet…

    • Ben

      December 30th, 2022 - 10:44am

Interesting to hear about noise reduction: I love when movies have some natural film grain, and while too much is often distracting I tend to dislike DNR.
I don’t own many of the DVDs / any VHS and so there’s not much to compare them to, and although the collection range doesn’t look close to films restored from the original 35mm, I can tell the team puts a lot of effort into making it look as good as possible.
That being said, it’s a shame when it seems restorations are just set to default or done by someone inexperienced.
This might be an unpopular opinion, but as they probably won’t restore them again (for a long time, or ever?) for the sets I’d prefer the best restoration possible with fewer special features rather than a sacrifice in restoration quality. To be honest, I’m thankful we’re getting these at all, I can’t think of any classic show save for maybe Star Trek with a fanbase dedicated enough to support similar sets. But with this set especially, it seems they were running short on budget and tried to save money in every place possible, and so they spread themselves thin by making all of the documentaries they thought they ought to make. It’s a hard position to be in.

It’s a shame you can’t do Amazon pick up when pre-ordering as that is only way to guarantee amazon logistics delivery.

Got my replacement which is in perfect condition as it came in a box and not via royal mail too.

Guess I’ll have to order 2 in future, 1 as pre-order then one on release day as pick up, then return the worst box.

I have been reading some of the Amazon Reviews Complaining how this set is a let down in terms of f new content… Well as this is a series we’re main cast only Carole Ann Ford, William Russell, Maureen O’Brien and Peter Purves are still alive, very little we could be done that had not been covered on DVD before… I’m grateful for any of these releases as they are always a gift for fans new and old

Personally, I think we’ve been extremely fortunate to get so much new material on this set. Three new documentaries, two “In Conversations” and six Behind The Sofa’s is fantastic content for a release of material of this age. I’m grateful for what we have!

They are mainly by trolls justifying why they won’t be getting rid of their dvds.

Some don’t understand the difference between blu-ray and dvd quality as even if the source isn’t hd the picture quality is still better, especially on large tvs.

I sold all my dvds as just no need to keep that version if getting the Season sets.

It’s nine discs of lovely improved sound and picture of a golden era, plus extras such as the interviews with William Russell, Maureen O’Brian and also the Looking for feature! What else could you possible do for this set considering the age of the cast and crew from this era. The only thing I wish could have been completed are the animations of the missing episodes, however I am sure the recons are very good as always.

So it’s taken nearly I week to start these as I Was already several Seasons of Storytelling on my Star Trek Universe Run Through (starting Chronologically with Enterprise and right through to the recent Discovery Seasons set in the 32nd century, plus all 13 Films) which I had started back in August and have only just concluded with the finale of Disco’s 4th season on 14/12/2022.

Now as I have seen the episodes on (and the Recons of what episodes 3 and 4 were supposed to be, prior to a change in episode ammount) I started with the wonderful interview with William Russell (and with his Character breaking records of his first and recent appearance in Doctor Who with “The Power of the Doctor”, its enjoyable to see him remember the 16 adventures he appeared in between 1963 and 1965. I always tend to watch the extras before rewatching the episodes, as i will do with the rest of Season 2.

Once again Lee Binding’s Beautiful Artwork is once again the perfect gift wrapping for a fantastic collection. Never fails to impress in the quality of the product and once again its a splendid set with excellent extras, no matter how scarce.

Very grateful to have received mine largely undamaged despite Amazon’s poor packaging. There’s a few slight knocks but willing to ignore it this time, it’s the first one in maybe the last 3-4 that I haven’t had to return. I think I’m going to start avoiding Amazon for anything that needs to arrive in decent condition though. I’ve ordered a few Blu-ray boxsets and books from them in the last few months and all have arrived with dents. The packing does hardly anything to protect the items anymore. Always think about returning but it would get silly. Sometimes I end up just sending back the replacement as that is worse!

Also, has anyone noticed that the booklet with this set is maybe printed on slightly thinner (cheaper?) paper stock. Might just be me, but it doesn’t feel as premium.

Another great set overall though, can’t wait to dive in! Looking forward to then next one!

I noticed that on the booklet. Could be due to trying to source materials now. Supply Issues with paper and cardboard across UK/Europe.

Wasn’t sure if booklet has less pages than normal too so less full art pages maybe?

My replacement from Amazon isn’t via Royal Mail so hoping for no dints. Amazon definitely picked the wrong time to use Royal Mail though due to strikes and therefore parcels backed up and piled high in their sorting centres.

I still haven’t received mine yet either, despite despatch on Thursday. Told it would arrive Saturday. Meant to be going out, but stayed in for parcel, only for it to be delayed, said to arrive Sunday instead. Exactly the same on Sunday, didn’t arrive. Then I am told today that I can go back for refund and they aren’t issuing replacements! This after I used a money off voucher on it, which I can only redeem once of course, meaning I’ve lost that and I’m both unable and unwilling, due to their incompetence, to reorder it at full price currently, hence the voucher in the first place! Only reason I ordered so late, in mid-November was because there wasn’t a release date until then! Amazon are hopeless!!

To be fair they usually are not! This is my first major issue with them and it seems I am not the only one, there is obviously a general cock up with this box set maybe to do with them but perhaps external factors too

Thibgs that go bump in the night… Cant see how you get a different message on hmv. When you search it it comes up with the following “Doctor Who: The Collection – Season 2 Limited Edition Box Set” has now been discontinued and is no longer available”.

Still available at amazon and whsmith.

Hmv have told me they are not getting anymore stock. So is discontinued.

Shame as had a 20% off to make it 39.99 from. Hmv. But still got 7£ off amazon so only 3£ more.

Hello James, as at 16:45 both Amazon (following the link on this site) and HMV allow me to add the set to a basket for purchase.

It looks like both have stock as of 16:45 9th December.

Hope that helps you secure a set.

      Cheers

Nope. When you try to add to the basket on HMV, an out of stock message flashes up. However, it also reads ‘Check back soon for another chance to buy’, so it isn’t out of stock permanently.
You’re right about Amazon though-still currently available.

I ordered 2 from Amazon to cover for damages, the box had been opened and one of the boxsets had been dropped at some point in transit.
The other was in perfect condition externally, but the disc trays had detached and torn the art work.

Not sure whats going on with the manufacture of these sets, but I never had this problem with the trays until season 22.
