August 16th, 2022 - 5:24pmI love that this is being released but after being spoiled by the previous boxes, a photosnap reconstruction seems such a backward step. It makes me worry it’ll be like the much derided Underwater Menace recon.
Preordered nonetheless
Anonymous
August 16th, 2022 - 5:28pmWhat else can they do? The episodes aren’t back, there’s nowhere near enough money to produce even one animated episode for one of these sets – and that would take all the money from the rest of the set. Leaving a blank disc tray was always a bad idea and unsurprisingly according to Richard Bignell, not viable in the slightest.
It won’t be like the Underwater Menace one, they’ve been producing competent telesnap recons on the animated releases for a while now.
Prowl 1701
August 16th, 2022 - 8:35pmYeah the Galaxy 4 recon was actually really good.
Gordon
August 17th, 2022 - 12:20amIt won’t be anything like the underwater menace reconstruction. That was done under the previous regime. The bosses made the baffling decision to make the recon the most basic recon possible even when the person making it wanted to make it better at no additional cost. Since then Russell Minton became in charge of the range and hired Derek handley from loose cannon. He’s been doing the recons for macra terror, faceless ones, fury, power, web 3, evil, g4 and abominable. He’s been doing a really good job of them in my opinion. We will probably never get another recon like underwater menace ever again.
Anonymous
August 20th, 2022 - 11:59amSo really the question is, who was in charge of the Classic DVD range between Dan Hall and Russell Minton? From what I can tell off the Restoration Team’s website entry on Underwater Menace, there must’ve been some miscommunication there.

August 16th, 2022 - 5:17pmI know some people are probably disappointed that the missing eps are not animated but this always felt inevitable from the start. Some eps are not really viable for animation due to the cost and I think The Crusade is one of those stories that was unlikely to be animated.
Anonymous
August 16th, 2022 - 5:23pmThese box sets have always been produced independently from the animated range so it was inevitable, yeah.
Hi
August 16th, 2022 - 5:17pmGreat news!. And in my opinion I think The Crusade 2 & 4 are found because after all the rumors of episodes being found.
Anonymous
August 16th, 2022 - 5:24pmNo, the episodes are represented by telesnap recons.
daz
August 16th, 2022 - 5:12pmSo happy to have another to add to my collection. Really glad it is 9 discs with a story per disc (hopefully) so if they ever do animate the missing episodes of The Crusade we can swap the discs out.
I do love the artwork but find Hartnell’s face a bit scary, to me it is missing something?
And although a bit more expensive than the usual sets it more than justifies it with more adventures to watch in this Season.
Anonymous
August 16th, 2022 - 5:21pmIt’s a photo from The Crusade where Hartnell is holding the period-appropriate outfit he’s changes into. His face is leaning to the side in the original photo and he’s looking away, so Lee Binding’s altered that for the cover.

August 16th, 2022 - 5:04pmI’ll admit the likeness of Bill on the cover is a little “odd”
Beautiful set as always though, can’t wait for this to come out, I expect in the late Autumn / early Winter

August 16th, 2022 - 8:36pmYeah something about his face looks “off” to me as well.

August 16th, 2022 - 4:53pmFantastic, Season 2 is my favourite classic season
Steven taylor
August 16th, 2022 - 4:52pmI wonder now they have the telesnap reconstruction for the crusade if they’ll release it on DVD as well
Anonymous
August 16th, 2022 - 5:02pmEven if it’s not animated, I’d be pleased with a DVD release for the Crusade recon because it would fill that gap on the shelf. Some of us are still reversing the sleeves on the covers to match.
Steven taylor
August 16th, 2022 - 5:09pmIt would be great if they do, I prefer telesnaps to be honest, only if they are done well unlike the underwater menace
Anonymous
August 16th, 2022 - 5:18pmYeah The Underwater Menace was shocking.

August 16th, 2022 - 7:02pmThe Crusade with its two telesnap episodes has been available on dvd for years in the 3disc dvd Doctor Who Lost in Time collection
Anonymous
August 16th, 2022 - 10:35pmThe soundtracks without narration were included on the Lost in Time box set. Also, we’re talking about an individual DVD release because there’s still a gap between The Web Planet and The Space Museum on the shelf.
Gordon
August 17th, 2022 - 12:24amThe 2 missing episodes of crusade on lost in time only had the soundtrack. No telesnaps was used on it
Auton
August 16th, 2022 - 4:46pmIs there a behind the sofa for the crusades? With two surviving episodes there should be but do you think future missing episodes stories may lack behind the sofas if they haven’t been animated such as the massacre and the myth makers
Bobby Fackrell
August 16th, 2022 - 5:00pmThey don’t watch the whole thing just clips so I would say almost certainly will be included
Mark
August 16th, 2022 - 4:35pmFinally, what a welcome surprise this boxset announcement was today.
I was really worred about the missing Crusade episodes and how they would be worked on. I am so, so pleased that it will be off-air photos (Ideally in HD like the HD galleries) .
If I really had to be curious, I wonder if there will be the option to view the missing episodes using John Cura’s telesnaps?
Really looking forward to this set.
Paul
August 16th, 2022 - 5:01pmI think ‘the off-air photos” they are referring to are just the Cura Telesnaps.
Anonymous
August 16th, 2022 - 5:07pmSeasons 1 and 5 are also feasible in the same manner as the only stories not animated in those seasons are Marco Polo and The Wheel in Space so those sets would be very easy to sell – and those stories in particular have John Cura’s telesnaps.
Seasons 3 and 6 may be a bit of a problem. Cura didn’t take telesnaps for any story except The Savages in Season 3, and he died inbetween Episodes 2 and 3 of The Mind Robber, so The Space Pirates, as well as having very few publicity photos, doesn’t have any telesnaps. For instance, there aren’t any official BBC-licensed photos of Dom Issigri for a photo recon so I don’t know how they would be able to solve that problem without Episodes 5 or 6 or whatever being found.
Mark
August 16th, 2022 - 6:18pm@Anonymous
You do raise some extremely good points regarding Seasons 3 & 6.
I highly, highly recommend Youtube Channel “Josh Snares”, specifically their “Upscaling Doctor Who Recons – The Savages” video.
The buffer you mention is that the photos must be BBC-licensed.
What to do really… hire a lookalike actor in place of “Dom Issigri”, slot that replacement actor into the photo work, in the style of Josh Snares’ projects, and provide credit to both actors in the credits?
I think it would be way too jarring to suddenly do illustration still-frames etc. I think if we are receiving photo reconstructions in this Season 2 box set, then any stories lacking telesnaps must have sleek photo-compositions. From Josh Snare’s quality work, it’s absolutely viable.
Anonymous
August 16th, 2022 - 10:37pmSame anon here. Yeah I really like Josh Snares’ work.
Gordon
August 17th, 2022 - 12:57amI’m sure they could still use non bbc copyrighted photos as long as they paid the asking fee for them
Anonymous
August 20th, 2022 - 12:07pmA slightly smaller issue is ensuring the photos are as accurate to the character’s original appearance as they could possibly get. Using Dom Issigri as an example again, they could get Esmond Knight, but they would need to photoshop a large white beard onto every photo of him. Frances White in The Myth Makers is an interesting example of this scenario as the original Loose Cannon reconstruction features photos of her with a completely different hairstyle – more like a bobcut – but the one publicity photo that does feature her presents her with a sort of curly hairstyle. With that knowledge it would make the recon a lot more accurate.
Neil
August 16th, 2022 - 4:34pmSuch a shame this doesn’t include animated versions of the missing episodes of ‘The Crusade’. Had always been hopeful that we would get more animated episodes, given the absence of any official announcement of them being stopped. Guess this kind of confirms it, although of the situation changes in the future (which I am sure it will be eventually), will any box sets with reconstructed episodes be released-released to include animations?
Mark
August 16th, 2022 - 4:51pmI would imagine any further animation serials would be released as independants, like The Abominable Snowmen.
I think that’s fair, and allows the fans that collect the animations to help fund the cause. I myself prefer real photos and stills to the original soundtrack, however I’m familiar with a lot of fans that are backing the animations.
For example Season 4, The Tenth Planet is missing a full screen off-air photo reconstruction, and a very early attempt from a few years ago was slotted in quickly on the Animation DVD. So the priority was made to focus on the animation project itself. So in a way releasing both mediums seperately like this allows the fans to receive the best of both worlds in the future, and to keep funding the animations if you do so wish.
Doug Who
August 16th, 2022 - 5:08pmI agree with Mark here. Just my opinion but apart from ‘The Invasion’ animation, I find the animated versions take me out of the story with things like the odd proportions being a distraction. Making them colour and ‘widescreen’ and all the augmentations takes them too far from the original episodes I think. I also think they really haven’t had the budget or time for the animation to be done well enough which is not the fault of the animators of course who have worked tirelessly on them. Having said all that, the Daleks work very well in animation! I know many others love them though.
Although they can be hard going, I prefer the tele-snap reconstructions (where they are available) which give a flavour of the originals. Of course, as Mark says, we have had both on the animated versions so all good!
Billy Hatnell
August 16th, 2022 - 5:20pmThe Crusade as we know was always going to be highly unlikely to animate due to costs.
Anonymous
August 16th, 2022 - 5:31pmI don’t know, I think the Shapeshifter team were onto something. The Web of Fear Episode 3 animation was majorly flawed but with enough refinement, it could’ve worked, and it seemed to be the easy solution for stories like Marco Polo or Daleks’ Master Plan. But the animations aren’t even going to be a thing anymore so there we go, I guess.

August 16th, 2022 - 4:34pmOh Thank god, A sixties release. Shame there may not be any more.

August 16th, 2022 - 6:00pmI think Season 1 makes sense for next year.

August 16th, 2022 - 9:50pmYes Season 1 next year seems to make sense doesn’t it being a big anniversary year, although the same could be said about S20 for the inclusion of The Five Doctors as a milestone story.
Happy with either, or both – anything to be honest aslong as they keep coming

August 16th, 2022 - 4:30pmWonderful to have a 60s series at last! The trailer is so beautifully done. We are really so lucky to have people who care so much about the show. I remember when Maureen O’Brien was not quite as enthusiastic about her time on the show (bit like Tom) so it’s fantastic they have come back to the fold so to speak!
Looking forward to this loads. Can’t wait to see these old episodes at their best…warts, camera collisions and all.

August 16th, 2022 - 4:22pm60s release long overdue. There are going to be gaps with missing episodes, the funding is there to correct this. I feel we were very fortunate to have what was animated with the help of BBCA

August 16th, 2022 - 4:09pmExcited for this release; however, can anyone shed any light on which original photograph Hartnell’s likeness on the cover is based on? I agree with someone else who commented that it does a little bit odd…
Coleman
August 16th, 2022 - 4:26pmTo be honest This cover image looks like an Hybred of two different actors, William Hartnell and David Bradly. (I wonder if it was done on purpose).
Anonymous
August 16th, 2022 - 4:59pmIt’s a composite using a publicity still of his face from The Crusade. There’s no hint of David Bradley in there and I don’t see why there would be.
Erato
August 16th, 2022 - 5:21pmCheers. I knew I’d seen that likeness somewhere originally. I can recall exactly which photo it is now; the one featuring Reg Pritchard and Tony Caunter in the marketplace from episode 1.

August 16th, 2022 - 3:51pmI do wish they would be up front with the release dates with these sets, but other than that it’s great to see some black and white coming out.
daz
August 16th, 2022 - 5:18pmI’d rather they didn’t. Things are very prone to delays these days due to production issues if you collect anything from toys to Blu-ray.
I’m sure they now update the release date when the stock has reached the UK or is on its way.
Kevin225
August 16th, 2022 - 9:14pmA fine line I think, but for people with limited budgets a reasonable advance notice of a certain release date is not just a ‘nice to have’ IMO. Otherwise people are putting aside money for something that doesn’t then turn up.
Dalek Eye Stalk
August 16th, 2022 - 3:50pmLooks like a great set. Quite possibly the best yet.

August 16th, 2022 - 3:46pmNo crusade animation sigh they shouldn’t be seasons with missing episodes when there is still 9 colour sets they can do first
scott
August 16th, 2022 - 3:51pm60s season require a lot of work to enhance the pic and sound quality, for example for this one apparently they have gone back and vidfired the Lion and the Time Meddler. In which case it’s better have have the budget spent on enhancing what we have than creating an animation that some will be indifferent about.
EvanMarshall
August 16th, 2022 - 4:21pmThe episodes would still be missing if they animated them. This is just a different way of presenting the soundtracks to the missing episodes. Also, for all the remaining Pertwee seasons there is a horrendous level of work required to bring them up to normal standards – including colourising the first episode of Invasion of the Dinosaurs – which will probably see those sets pushed back. I, for one, am extremely pleased that we’re finally getting a 1960s set.
Erato
August 16th, 2022 - 4:26pmFor me, The Crusade is absolutely flawless.

August 16th, 2022 - 5:00pmPushing all the 60s seasons to the end of the range is a terrible idea.
The ergon
August 16th, 2022 - 6:55pmThey just want to get them out. And its easier to space out remaining subsequant collectionsThey can always repackage and rerelease with animations or lost episodes should those stories get animated or get found at some much later date.
Gordon
August 17th, 2022 - 1:19amNo animations in the works just now due to bbc america no longer funding them going by those that work on them and considering they need to find a new parter and how long each animation takes we are probably at least 2 years off from the next one. Considering crusade is probably the 2nd most trickiest animation to do in terms of cast sets and locations plus historicals are a harder sell it could be at least a decade before it’s even considered for animation. The range will be long finished by then.
