That’s good to hear, I wonder if they are going to film something at Ironbridge. I think season 22 and season 9 are highly likely next year with the abominable snowmen as the next animation and probably the savages and the underwater menace as well

    • Prof Horner

      November 19th, 2021 - 4:55pm

In the latest DWM, the people making the trailers mentioned they worked on one called the storyteller. Do you think could refer to HG Wells as in Timelash?

    • Menace from water

      November 19th, 2021 - 5:23pm

Ahhh so this is what they are going about on twitter but trying to be gate keeper like again cheers Gordon for telling us straight also I’ve heard something is getting reviled on the 23rd how true this is no one knows

    • Auton

      November 20th, 2021 - 7:07am

It would make sense menace from water as the 23rd November as I’m sure you well know is doctor who day and it’s the perfect day to announce the next animation and perhaps the next blu Ray collection boxset after season 17. Last November 23rd we got the Web of fear announcement so I’m sure we will get something next Tuesday

    • Gordon

      November 20th, 2021 - 9:59pm

@auton that’s pretty much what I’m predicting with an added Tom or Peter season depending on whether or not mark is available. Wouldn’t be too surprised though if we got a curveball with mission to the unknown considering we got the first minute of it on the galaxy 4 animation (which I still haven’t had the time to see). Mind you they animated 10 minutes of wheel and space and we are still no closer to getting it.

@prof Horner I did think that might be hg wells but the comment about it being at a location that brought a nostalgic tear to Pete mctighe’s eyes leads me away from it considering timelash is all studio. The title is very vague. It could just be a former companion telling someone about their events in a season.

I do think we will get something announced but wouldn’t be too surprised if we don’t. The last collection announcement was only last month. Feels a little too soon since the last one. Plus season 8 was announced a few days after the anniversary. If season 22 is next and they were only filming this week it seems very quick between filming and announcement.

Think an animation announcement is quite likely however With them only finishing evil in July and g4 in august I suspect they are going to be a bit away from completion. If they are going to announce 1 story it would most likely be abominable (it’s pretty much an open secret that it’s happening at this point) if not a 3d style underwater menace shapeshifter animation could be a possibility and a mission to the unknown animation being an outside bet if the big finish creative team are moving on to mission next (due to being only 1 ep it could be quite far on).

    • Auton

      November 21st, 2021 - 7:24am

I do hope mission to the unknown is sooner rather than later as it’s always the longer and popular missing episodes that get talked about and mission being one part can be an easy story and release to do. I also want mission to be a separate release to Dalek master plan as mission is its own story even if it’s a prequel and to have mission separate on my dvd shelve. The only question I have about mission is will the university recreation from 2019 be included or is there rights issues because it would be a perfect release to have an animated version, a photographic version (due to no tele-snaps) and the 2019 version of it. Then they could make a making of covering all the versions and a commentary on the university one with some people involved and perhaps Edward de Souza on the animation.

Though at my current rate of 3 episodes a week, I think I might be able to stretch out my watch period so that when this does arrive, there won’t be too much of a gap for me. Relatively speaking.

    November 11th, 2021 - 8:20pm

I’ve read the list of special features for ‘City Of Death’ in Doctor Who Magazine, and oddly, the comedy sketch ‘Eye on… Blatchford’ apparently isn’t included. I’m hoping that this is simply an editing error, as I did also notice that the CGI effects for ‘Nightmare of Eden’ aren’t listed either.

    Reply
    • Pete X

      November 11th, 2021 - 9:04pm

The CGI on Nightmare is discussed in the accompanying article, so no mention in the listing is an error.

Eye on Blatchford? May be an error, may be they don’t have the permission to use it any more; similar to withdrawal of permission to use the conference panel video on the Tomb of the Cybermen DVD re-release. If not then Oh Mummy might also be missing from the eventual Season 13 release – same production team.

Regardless of the above DWM have left themselves a get out at bottom of page 77 – Additional features may be included in the final release.

    • Ian Cotterill

      November 11th, 2021 - 11:17pm

Ah, good to know on the footnote. I missed that bit.

      October 21st, 2021 - 9:08pm

Yes I thought that, the “new” logo appears to be a very subtle change of don’t within the squares. I’m hoping at a passing glance it won’t be too noticeable

    • Philip Shaw

      October 22nd, 2021 - 1:39pm

Will they change the ‘Doctor Who’ logo when Jodie’s left though?

    • D84

      October 22nd, 2021 - 2:37pm

I would lean more towards a yes on that one (logo change) – they usually do, even if its a subtle change (9 to 10)

Although I do recall a mention of BBC Studio’s bringing “uniformity” to merchandise hence why we have the current logo across all of the collection sets and Macra Terror Animation onwards.
I think I would have preferred each season’s logo – or doctor’s logo to be used on the respective release but I’m probably repeating an old thread there.

I would prefer them to keep it as it is for the collection sets now they have started – but it really wouldn’t surprise me if we do see a change before we get all 27 sets on the shelf.

    • Rory

      October 22nd, 2021 - 4:14pm

Agreed D84. I’d far prefer having the sets consistent, and it’s not like they can do reversible covers for these ones.

    • Gordon

      October 22nd, 2021 - 4:47pm

I’m sure if the doctor who logo changes the collection box sets will stay the same. Those involved making the sets don’t see the logo changing.

I’ve a couple of speculative thoughts regarding the sound options on ‘Destiny Of The Daleks’ and ‘Shada’:

    1) On the 5.1 surround sound option, could Davros’ voice be re-vocalised to match David Gooderson’s performance in the trailer?

    2) Are we likely to get a music-only option for ‘Shada’?

    Reply
    • Auton

      October 18th, 2021 - 8:56am

      1. Doubt it as all the others were just 5.1 surround sound of the existing audio and 2. Hopefully as the Shada soundtrack does sound amazing and the closest thing to the city of death running through Paris music which I adore

    • Gordon

      October 18th, 2021 - 11:27am

      1. Mark ayres has teased there might be.
      2. Wasn’t mentioned and going by previous releases they normally say at the announcement stage so I don’t think it will have

    • GeordieW

      November 1st, 2021 - 12:24pm

To be honest I’m really disappointed that Destiny got the 5.1 mix rather than City of Death, these sound mixes are the best things about these sets in my opinion and Destiny is good, but City of Death is phenomenal and I thought deserved to be the one for this season.
Never mind, maybe for the 4K release…

    • Gordon

      November 1st, 2021 - 6:58pm

From what I gather I don’t think they have all the bits to do a 5.1 mix for city of death

With S17 now announced (yay) lets look at next year.

Could We see a Pertwee possibily, there are still 3 sets to go – but depends how much restoration is required I guess.
They may be rumbling along in the background for a release further down the line (especially the stories that have already had colour restoration for DVD) – they may be harder to bring up to Blu Ray standard – just a guess.

I do think its highly likely we will see a Davison set soon as we have 2 to go and we’ve not had a Davison set since 2018 (I think)

Beyond that, I cant see them completing either 6th or 7th doctors sets before there are only 1 or 2 to go per doctor so maybe another Tom set? 13, 15 & 16 all to go yet.

That would be my prediction for the 2022 release schedule based on nothing by my own opinions and guesswork around what we’ve had and what is left to go.

I sincerely hope that S1 – 6 receive the collection treatment only when a full season is ready to go combining surviving episodes plus new animation (throw in the telesnaps as an extra rather than the main feature) so for me we are 1-2 years away from seeing any Hartnell or Troughton sets. Just my opinion

I’d really rather not have a Collection set with Telesnaps etc in it soon, and then in a couple of years a revised super super special collection edition that is completed with animations (if – and once they are all done)

Given the rumours/info shared on here, I predict we’ll see Seasons 22, 20 and a Pertwee sandwiched between them (11?).

Then, for the Anniversary year, 13, 25 and 7…

    • Kenny

      October 12th, 2021 - 3:13pm

My prediction is exactly the same for next year. Based on rumors I have seen I would not be surprised by 20 and 22, and a Pertwee makes sense as a way to breakaway from the 80s.

For the Anniversary year it would be terrific is the animated Marco Polo (in a solo release) and put out the First Season in this newly completed form. It is hard to say what they will do, but if that isn’t a great way to celebrate the 60th, I dunno what is.

We know Season 9 will be the next Pertwee (we’ve seen pictures of colour restoration work being done on The Time Monster), so that’s just a matter of when.

I’m expecting Season 9, a Tom Baker set (either 15 or 16) and another 80s set (probably Season 22).

    • The ergon

      October 12th, 2021 - 4:19pm

Having all the remaining classic doctors back but as something evil.

    • Gordon

      October 12th, 2021 - 9:44pm

Having had time to ponder on it I do think it will be 22 and 9 but the order will all depend on what the final release will be. If they manage to get mark Strickson over in time for 20 being the final set I can see it being 22, 9, 20 to split the 2 80’s sets up. If it isn’t going to be season 20 I can see it being another Tom ending the year and to split the 2 70’s sets I can see it being 9,22 and 15.

As for Marco animated and season 1 for 2023 it does seem the obvious choice and out of the remaining stories it’s my most wanted so I’m certainly all for it. However I worry if they will have enough time to do it justice in time for the 60th aniversary. If they are going to do it in 2d they will have had to have started it now or just in the process of doing it. Look at evil of the daleks it’s also a 7 parter. It took 18 months to do and it had less characters sets and locations. For comparison including costume changes Marco Polo has 27 credited characters. Evil only had 13. Marco has 11 locations compared with evil’s 11 but Marco’s locations are far more complex. Could see this being a 2 year minimum project. Sure they could go down the 3d route but as much as I see the potential it needs massively refined before they go anywhere near such a large story as Marco Polo.

    • Basil Funkenstein

      October 12th, 2021 - 11:13pm

      Personally I think we’ll see 9, 22, and 15 next year.

25, 20, and 16 in 2023 (Possibly season 1 but I’d prefer to have an entire season available before releasing the black and white 60’s eras.)

11, Wilderness years, and a sixties set in 2024.

7 and two sixties sets in 2025.

13 and two sixties sets in 2026.

Depending if they do season 1 in 2023 that covers all the sets. If they don’t then there will be one sixties set left over for 2027.

    • Basil Funkenstein

      October 13th, 2021 - 12:51am

I forgot season 21. That could be with a sixties set in 2027.

Season 9 thenI think instead of season 22 it’s going to be season 21 but again it all depends on Mark Strickson availability and then season 15

I dare wonder whether for the anniversary year they may announce and release the first modern set to bulk out the latter end of the classics, one can dream…

Your predictions do seem good, where would you put 21 Basil?

    • D84

      October 13th, 2021 - 1:48pm

I’m with you DPHill – I truly hope NuWho gets the same treatment even if it is at the latter end of the “classic” seasons being released it even after they are all done. By then – around 20 years will have passed since we all heard those magic notes new and on live TV for the first time in 16yrs (9 if you count the Movie) More then enough time for making of’s / then and now / behind the sofa etc.

      Indeed, one can dream

      October 13th, 2021 - 5:06pm

Altho I really want them to do new who I do worry that that portion of the collection will never be complete. If the series is still going when they get caught up will they start releasing 2 versions of the series box sets normal and collection version? Will the range end/blu ray stop being a thing before the show ends and thus the collection never being complete? I do want new who collection sets but I don’t want an incomplete collection.

    • D84

      October 13th, 2021 - 9:05pm

An excellent point Whofan44 I had not considered that angle……… interesting

    • Gordon

      October 13th, 2021 - 10:32pm

Because a lot of the collection extras are being reflective and looking back at the seasons (writers room, doctor’s table etc) I don’t really see them doing collection sets at the same time as the show is going out. You also need to take into account that the current cast/crew at the time might not be as honest or as open as they would be if it was for events 10-15 years prior. Plus whoever is in charge at the time might not be as allowing for access. Rtd might be okay with it but whoever is in charge after him might not be as allowing. There most certainly will be a cut off point. The obvious question will be what the cut off point? The end of jodie’s era would be a good cutting off point at present but whose to say the rtd2 era won’t be over by the time we get to it?

    • D84

      October 14th, 2021 - 10:42am

      Indeed Gordon more excellent points.

I guess its a minefield for the guys who produce the sets.

I guess I’m probably being overly hopeful but I just love the idea of everything in one uniform look on the shelf.

Doctor Who is the only physical media that I buy and even own these days but then again like a lot of other fans on here I have gone through all the VHS and then all the DVD’s of Who, and now Blu Ray.

My wife just sigh’s at me 🙂

      October 22nd, 2021 - 7:58am

I believe they have confirmed the black and white sets will be included and also there is no direct link with the animations but they would take advantage of it
I simply don’t see all six being left until the end, I agree the popular rumour of season one coming out for the 60th bit that’s not a guarantee I still think and hope two or six may come out next year

Be interesting to see Pertwees third season – Time Monster and The Mutants are both totally underrated. Time Monster is of special interest as it was the first Who serial I saw in colour. We had our first colour TV just in Time to see the new TARDIS interior. I was thrilled to bits. Loved the story and especially the Master’s console ever since. The Mutants falls in nicely with the series building the future of the Earth Empire something which has sadly been demolished by the series since.

I’m a young 63 (born ’58) and still very much enjoy Doctor Who, even New Who.

Earliest memories (some vaguer than others) are

      1) Hiding from The Daleks in London…
      2) Why there were no ‘monsters’ in Marco Polo…
      3) Zarbis’ in Web Planet…
      4) Catching Chicken Pox the day after after watching Peter Cushing’s first outing as Dr Who at the ABC Blackpool – was on holiday at the time, so spoilt it…
      5) Getting fed up waiting for Doctor Who to start as a certain match in 1966 had gone to extra time…

    • Prof Horner

      October 11th, 2021 - 2:21pm

Not really Coleman, season 6 is the first season I remember and the really only lost story is The Space Pirates and I only really having vague memory of The Tardis arriving on the beacon in episode one. I remember watching The Invasion , The Seed of Death and particularly The War Games.

I still have those panini lost stories bookazines the first and second doctor. I sometimes use those as reference if i listen the audios. I mention the space pirates as example as i still cant visualise little things like dom issigri and others.

Great memories, Things that go bump in the night. I bet alot of whovians would have loved to have good memories of the missing episodes. Good point you make about why no monsters in Marco Polo. I should imagine alot of children back that started watching Dr Who because it was Science Fiction and full of Aliens. So the Historical episodes would seem abit “strange.”

City snd Shada are the only two classics for me, the rest I can take or leave, so I’ll settle for my current versions and pass on this set. A standard version will appear within a year, so I potentially have forever in which to change my mind. My priorities now are filling the gaps in my shelf where I don’t have previous versions of the stories at all, which means Peter’s last two seasons and Colin’s first. Anyone care to hazard a guess when they might show up?

    Reply
    • Gordon

      October 9th, 2021 - 12:37pm

Peter’s last 2 will all depend on when they can get mark Strickson over from new Zealand. With Covid restrictions not expected to be lowered till early next year. Even once he’s available to come over they will also have to plan a time for him to come over when everyone is available. Might not be till the middle of next year or even later before they are available to film. Could be another year away minimum before we get the next Peter set (which is extremely likely to be season 20 as they have already recorded some material for it). They obviously won’t be wanting to have out both of those Peter seasons too close together so I don’t see the other 1 out till 2024/2025.

As for colin’s first he has said he was offered the option of filming in Spain for the 2 doctors documentary but apparently turned it down. The fact that they are enquiring about filming for this story does sound like they are at the least planning stages for it. There was also a twitter rumour floating around just before the news of season 17 broke that season 22 would be coming soon so it would not surprise me if the next or the one after it will be season 22. The next 1 won’t be another Tom and I doubt they would put out another sylvester so quickly after s24. I doubt we will see a black and white till at least 2023 and as I’ve said the 2 Peter seasons has the mark strickson situation. It only leaves a pertwee and a colin set as possibilities for next

Depends on what they need him for. If it’s an on camera interview they could film from New Zealand but if they want him together with the rest of the tardis team for say behind the sofa or at a certain location it’s not really possible to do it from New Zealand and Russell Minton has ruled out using zoom/Skype stating “absolutely not”

Think those expecting massive reworking to the likes of web 3 are going to be massively disappointed. Charles Norton describes the changes as minimal: “Mostly some regrading and some corrections to the frame-rate here and there”. Mark Ayres has also fixed up some of the errors with the sound. I do wonder if the budget could stretch to do 1 scene. Rough and tumble scene springs to mind

Good news, but the extras sound a bit… thin? Making-ofs for stories that already have making-ofs and a Lalla Ward interview that’s clearly so old that it’s been filmed in standard def. I hope it’s done to availability and not the budgets on the sets being cut.

Destiny of the daleks is getting a making of and it’s only horns of nimon missing anything that resembles a making of but it’s got a great commentary and production subtitles so that will easily give a lot of behind the scenes information. Bits of the Lalla Ward interview has been seen before but the majority hasn’t so that’s still new plus Lalla Ward is living in Hong Kong so they can’t do anything new with her.

    • Philip Shaw

      October 8th, 2021 - 2:06pm

More likely because of Covid and delay’s in the sets for the lack of more extra’s. there is all the original extra’s from the DVD’s on as well which aren’t listed.

    • Gordon

      October 8th, 2021 - 2:19pm

Seems on par with other releases

      1. Destiny of the daleks making of: Brand new. The original release had a terry nation overview so didn’t have a making of

2, creature from the pit featurette: the original documentary was focused just on Erato so this is probably going to feature more on the actual story/production

      3. Tom talks: brand new

      4. Douglas adams tribute: brand new. Probably the longest documentary on the set

      5. In conversation with Bob baker: brand new. Most sets have 1 (10 18 excluded)

      6. Behind the sofa: brand new. Standard for every set

      7. Lalla ward interview; old footage but as auton mentions we have seen very little of it

      8. New special effects for nightmare in Eden: brand new. Most sets have 1 (24/26 excluded)

      9. Extended creature from the pit ep 3: extended ep is new but the extended footage may have been on the original dvd

      10. Shada the “definitive edition”: newly edited 6 part version. Kind of new: The audio will probably be changed slightly to fit the cliffhangers. Also Rob Ritchie has said he’s done a little bit of additional fixing on the animation so it’s not just a case of cutting a cliffhanger every 25 mins..

      11. Shada 1992/2017: previously released

      12. New audio commentaries: Both the Tom baker and the lalla ward/Catherine Schell commentaries are brand new

      13. Blu ray trailer: brand new for blu ray

      14. 5.1 surround sound: destiny is brand new. 2021 Shada is new but 2017 shada isnt

      15. Rare gems from the archive: some old but also some new

      16. Convention footage: never released before on blu ray

      17. Production subtitles: updated

      18. Photo gallery: updated expanded and now in HD

      19. Pdf files. Massively expanded (6488 pdf files!!!!)

And that doesn’t include the other material that we don’t yet know about.

Out of all that the lalla interview and the 92/17 versions of shada are the only real usage of old material from the DVDs that was announced and the lalla footage we have only seen a small part of it. Everything else is new, new to the range or updated. Only real thing missing is a making of for the horns of nimon and perhaps something with tom on Eden but from what I gather this and Eden wasn’t a happy time for most and a lot of people involved on screen either don’t want to be interviewed on it or are no longer with us. Also Wouldn’t have minded if tom had done behind the sofa but as he’s pretty much all over the destiny/tom talks/adams features it kind of makes up for it
