Just got started watching the box set, I’m enjoying it so far.

Is anyone else experiencing slight jumps or stuttering in the footage? It was present all throughout Destiny of the Daleks, and it’s slightly present in City of Death, which I’m watching as I type this.

Maybe you have a poorly blu ray player? I’d try an unrelated disc to check if i were you, hope you sort it out.

I’d suggest turning off any additional Noise Reduction/Smooth Motion type settings as the footage have been remastered as much as it can. It’s best to make a note of the settings before you turn them off in case you think your other TV/Disc viewing looks worse though…

Just got my set and it is fab!

i can’t help but think what’s coming up in the range in general – i know there have been rumours that 9 has been scanned for the sets and that Colin Baker has been seen in his revelation cloak as well as Louise Jameson posting a picture recently next to a lighthouse…

I think 2022 will bring us
    22, 9, 15

given what we do have info-wise. I think the seventies colour seasons left after these are the more difficult ones seen as most major cast members have either passed on, or the likes of Tom Baker and Richard Franklin are getting on a bit so involvement will be increasingly limited as time passes on – 7, 11, 13, 16 all have either very aged members like Tom, Richard, or John Levene and no other real members left and considering their dipping involvement as time has gone on I wonder if these will be left til last?

    2023 predictions…
    25, 20, ???

I think these two in the anniversary year considering they are anniversary seasons, one is practically complete and the other is the last small classic season so should be relatively easy to do… I’m thinking we may get a bonus release, but it is unlikely though I do feel that for the anniversary year they will release something new in terms of the collection sich as a wilderness years, a sixties season, or perhaps even a RTD1 era season as they are definitely getting older and would be good to mark his start on the show again with a release from his era?

Personally i feel like the new era will start before the sixties are finished to help boost the timeframe for getting them complete and if the crusade. the space pirates, the wheel in space are finished by that time, we may be able to get our first sixties set as these three stories seem most likely to be animated even without the bbcamerica involvement

Personal predictions if this whovian had all animations and new who in the mix would be
    2022 – Season 22, Season 09, Season 15
    2023 – Season 20, Season 25, Season 02
    2024 – Series Two, Season 13, Season 21
    2025 – Series One, Season 05, Season 07
    2026 – Wilderness Years, Season 16, Season 11
    2027 – Season 01, Season 05, Series 3
    2028 – Season 04, Series 4, Torchwood
    2029 – Season 03, Sarah-Jane…

    what’s everyones thoughts?

I’m sure the whole Louise Jameson lighthouse thing was she was filming something non who related down beside Cornwall. She travels quite a bit for jobs(she was also at bath and Eastbourne round about the same time doing a few other things). Also horror of fang rock was completely studio.

I don’t see the modern series getting touched till 2025 at the earliest. Maybe even 2027.

As for this year Season 22 is definitely next. There has been so much work done on it recently that we know about I will be gobsmacked if it isn’t next. With the sea devils coming back in April I can see a trailer surfacing for season 9 about then. I do think the next Tom if it’s this year will be season 15 but they might want to give Tom the year off as to not burn through the remaining toms before the end of the range which I now think it will happen. If they are saving a Tom season for the 60th i suspect it’s going to be 13. If it’s not a Tom this year i heavily suspect it’s going to be season 2. Crusade was always going to be one of the later stories animated due to how much work it needed so it was always going to struggle to be completed in time for the collection. They have also said in more than 1 occasion that they weren’t waiting on the animations. Peter purves has let slip that he’s done behind the sofa with Carol Ann Ford and Maureen o Brien for season 2 so I definitely think it’s coming sooner rather than later.

      As for my predictions:

      2022: 22 9 2
      2023: 20 13 1
      2024: 25 11 6
      2025: 21 15 5
      2026: w 7 4
      2027: 16 3 series 1
      2028: 4, 5, 10
      2029: 11, 3, 8
      2030: 6, 12, 2
      2031: 7, 13, 9

They could simply put most of the the B/W seasons as they are telesnaps or just audio soundtracks and maybe just revisit them at a later date if and when they get them all animated. Just include more extras and a decent documentary for fully missing stories just for the insight.

I can’t see new who being touched at all in the collection range. Would be nice considering the lack of special features from new who releases.

At the same time I feel it wouldn’t be as special, we have had series box sets of new who and steel book versions too. But yeah I ‘d still like to see it happen, just for the art alone!! but the special features too

I often wonder if we’ll see much of William Russell on these sets given he’s now at the ripe old age of 97. It would be fantastic to see new interviews with him regarding those early years. He was, in many ways, the lead role in the early adventures.

    • Pete X

      January 19th, 2022 - 5:47pm

William Russell would be my pick for the Matthew Sweet interview on the S1 set. MS would, probably, relish diving into WR’s career.

Rather than S13 out next year I would have thought S16 – 15th anniversary year including cut birthday cake scene. Agree with S1 and S20; S25 as first release in 2024.

Extending the collection into the modern series, if at all, is more likely to be later now that RTD is back holding the reigns and Bad Wolf are involved. He’s not likely to want any criticism, veiled or otherwise, of what went on* during his first stint as showrunner to appear while he is in the big seat again or Bad Wolf are partners.

Tom Talks is a really interesting documentary.
Hearing him talk about how Rowan Atkinson sidelined him was a bit shocking.
Although I can imagine Rowan worrying about Tom Baker stealing the show due to his sheer talent.

Great to see more content from Tom and glad to hear he’s doing well.

Heard this story a few times in the past but Tom goes into much more detail in this documentary and it is very harrowing by this account as Rowan is clearly bullying Tom and it did seem to affect him emotionally and mentally he is very open about that

There are always two sides to every coin but this is really unpleasant, it would be interesting to learn how Rowan recalls the events

    • Anonymous

      January 11th, 2022 - 3:36pm

Rowan Atkinson was slightly pretentious in his approach to comedy, especially in his 20s. Just watch the first Blackadder series (which he co-wrote) or hear interviews about his academic approach to crafting comedy with his fellow Oxbridge graduates. Blackadder II was a huge risk after the flop the first series had been. There must have been huge pressure to really get it right and already many strong creative voices from within the regular cast.
Tom, on the other hand, had just come from nearly a decade as lead in Doctor Who, which ended with a reduction in his overpowering creative control of the part when John Nathan-Turner took the producer reins.
I suspect this would go someway to explain where this story comes from.

    • the ergon

      January 19th, 2022 - 3:42pm

Richard Curtis soon put a stop to that though when Tom explained how Rowan wanted him to play the part of captain Redbeard and so told him to play it how everyone would expect him to, in a wildly over the top Tom baker way. That would have quietly irked Rowan as well as the fact that Curtis and Elton turned Blackadder into a massive hit.

I wonder if the first and second doctors will be in black & white artwork on the covers for seasons 1-6?
I personally think it would look great as it would also clearly represent that it is the black & white era.
    Just a thought.
Also i’m really looking forward to seasons 7 & 21 hopefully in the near future.
I also personally think next year will be anniversary seasons including 20 & 25.

Just watch The eve of Daleks, having worked the last two days. Great to see The Sea Devil’s back and looking as good as they did in 1972 . Unlike Warriors of the deep where they looked ever so slightly ridiculous! But it does beg the question why do we seem to be getting season 22 ,the video nasty season in the spring. When we should have season 9 ,which would tie in nicely with the return of the Sea Devil’s. After the episode was screened, they could said something along the lines of ,if you like the Sea Devil’s , check out their first appearance with the season 9 Blu ray box set now available. Well the good thing about the probably release of season 22 is it only leaves season 25 to be released that I won’t waste my money on! Happy New Year!

Whilst I agree yes the timing would have been spot on – I guess production and restoration of the S9 set may not have been achievable in the timeframe. Its also possible (maybe) the the team producing the collection sets – knew nothing of the plans for new episodes.

Considering how secretive chibnall is I wouldn’t be too surprised if Russell Minton and co on the blu ray team wasn’t made aware of the plans to bring the sea devils back. Season 9 is probably the next season anyway if it isn’t season 2 (can’t see it being another 80s and it’s probably too soon for another tom).

Yea true, its great The Sea Devils are coming back I can’t wait.

On the notion of S2, what are the thoughts on a collection set with an exclusive animation? Only available on that set (no separate standalone release)

I can’t see it personally with how money grabbing the beeb seem to be – but plausible??

    • Prof Horner

      January 3rd, 2022 - 10:50pm

Well regarding season 2 with exclusive animation . I really don’t think they that is likely because of the cost , same with season 6 and the Space Pirates. Of course they could release season 2 with two missing episodes and calling it The almost complete 2 season! It would great news if a sixties season was released this year. As said I will get them all of the seasons up to season 21. Can’t get along with any of the seasons after that.

    • Gordon

      January 3rd, 2022 - 10:58pm

If season 2 is coming soon it will be in all likelihood a recon. The budgets for the season sets are nowhere near big enough to support a new animation.

Just throwing it out there guys as a thought I had. I don’t think anything will come of it.

@anonymous – no I didn’t mean that these sets were money grabbing, I love them and think they are great value. But I feel some of the other stuff they crank out can be viewed as money grabbing such as special editions, collections of random stories thrown together with very little connection etc)

Although, I do currently – and hope to continue to own every single episode that is available and have bought no less than 3 copies of Spearhead from Space.

      Why??

      We all know why 🙂

    • Prof Horner

      January 4th, 2022 - 10:47am

Well I suppose there is some logic to releasing season 2 with recons for the two missing episodes and there are only two missing so it wouldn’t be so bad. You couldn’t do this with the Space Pirates as there are no telesnaps of this story . Somewhere down the line we can expect the Crusade missing episodes to be animated ,so all you do is swap over the discs .

    • Auton

      January 4th, 2022 - 12:39pm

Spearhead from space is a masterpiece. I don’t think season 2 is going to happen next year. I believe they recorded the rumoured behind the sofa with Peter Purves and Maureen O’Brien just because Maureen was in the country. Season 22 then 9 then 15 are still my predictions for next year

Don’t you mean this year Auton? Either you’re still in Christmas mode or you’re stuck in a timeloop. I agree, I think it’ll be 22, 9, and 15 this year. Either that or 22, 9, and 20/21.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      January 4th, 2022 - 9:30pm

Perhaps a last minute change to the schedule, one guesses they are working on both series 22 and 9 and they have not officially announced 22 yet, and they get to suprise us if they do a sudden U- Turn

Series 2? Yes please and 6! I love the Crusades it’s one of my favourites but I’ll take telesnapes with narration for the sake of having all of series two. Same for series six I’ll just take an audio of Space Pirates, these two are potentially years away from being animated for the sake of 7 episodes out of 80 odd just get them out

    • Gordon

      January 4th, 2022 - 11:41pm

With only 6 easy to restore seasons left (13,15,16,20,21,25) I can see them saving some of them till later on to spread some of the workload out. They aren’t going to leave all the tricky seasons till the end (we got s8 quite early on) and they certainly aren’t going to leave all the black and white seasons till the end either. With this in mind they will have to start doing the 60s sets sooner rather than later and in the case of season 2 it’s pretty much almost complete bar 2 episodes. Considering how much characters sets and costumes crusade has it’s probably unlikely to be considered for animation for quite a few years and the collection would most likely be done by then. There is that 3d style animation that we got for web of fear but it needs massively improved before they even consider touching that story.

I did have season 15 as a prediction for 2022 but thinking on it could still happen but I’m not going to discount the possibility that they might want to give him a set closer to the end to space out his releases a little so might just give him a year off. I don’t think we are going to get another 80s set this year. It’s only going to leave 2 80s sets for the rest of the range. I can see space pirates getting animated in the next 2-3 years unlike crusade so I think they will hold off on s6

    • Prof Horner

      January 5th, 2022 - 12:18pm

Well you make some interesting points Gordon and I think there a lot of sense in what you say. If we get season 2 this year and The Wheel in Space is animated this year .I could see season 5 released say in early 2024 . Well it fun to speculate . Stay safe everybody.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      January 5th, 2022 - 12:53pm

It’s got to be 4 or 5 Sets for the anniversary year hasn’t it?

      1, 13, 20, 25 maybe 5?

    • scotel

      January 5th, 2022 - 3:26pm

They’ve tried to release four sets in a year and were unable to do so in the past. Anniversary year or not, it’s simply too difficult for them to get that amount of sets out.

If we are getting Season 2 this year, I think it is safe to say we’ll get one 60s set a year from here on out. If Season 5 is fully animated I’d hope it would be the set picked for the anniversary year but they could potentially go ahead with Season 1 instead.

    • Prof Horner

      January 5th, 2022 - 4:35pm

I don’t think it is likely that we will 5 seasons next year. 4 maybe if they release season 25 and maybe season 7 if it ready as they are both Short seasons which could easily have a 5 or 6 disc sets. Season 4 still has 2and a half stories to animate so that isn’t going to be released next year either. Season 6 could be released next year if The Space Pirates is animated this year.who knows.

Season 7 while being a short season, will need extra time to improve the colour restoration for Silurians, Ambassadors and Inferno. It is my most wanted season to be released

      January 5th, 2022 - 5:30pm

    • scotel

      January 5th, 2022 - 7:16pm

“Short season”? You need to look at the episode count (not the number of serials) because it’s pretty much the same run time as every other season until the first hiatus. Even removing Spearhead from Space, it’s still got 21 episodes needing a cleanup.

    • Prof Horner

      January 5th, 2022 - 7:47pm

Season 7 is a short season in as much as there are only 4 Stories.Meaning four discs. Yes it needs a lot of work . We will see.

    • Gordon

      January 6th, 2022 - 2:11am

Mark ayres said in 2021 that 3 seasons a year at most going forward so it certainly won’t be 5 in 2023. Each set takes 3-4 months minimum to produce and probably longer for seasons the size of like 1/2. Even a short season like 23/24/26 took a bit of time to do due to the various versions and sound options that was created for the sets as well as the sheer amount of archive material that needs to get digitised for each release

Season 7 needs the most work out of the remaining colour seasons.Considering spearhead was restored almost a decade ago I can see them having another go. Restoration techniques with film have moved forward since then. Might even get a 4k scan this time round if budgets allow and if it would benefit it. . Silurians needs a bit of work as it’s the oldest restoration. Ambassadors ep 1 should be easy enough as it’s the only episode of season 7 where the original pal tape exists (spearhead was on film). 2-7 could do with a bit of improving. The colour recovery though marvellous considering the quality of footage could be done with improving. Inferno should be restored the same way as claws and colony so should also have the option of watching the previous 2006 restoration and the new restoration (colony and claws both did this) so inferno should at least be 2 discs to fit both on. Depending on how silurians is tackled I can see that also needing 2 discs as well.

It’s a bit disappointing that the VHS edit of Shada, despite only being included in standard def, looks better on the studio scenes than the newer one. But someone really turned up the noise reduction, not quite to 1990s levels (or Network’s Maigret set), but there’s far more smear and detail loss than necessary. I’m guessing that VHS Shada is just the DVD master (prepared by the old Restoration Team) and someone new and less careful did all the remasters for 2017 Shada. Please dial it back a bit next time, will ya?

Would the 5.1 option sound okay just through normal tv speakers? I just have a regular tv with no extra speakers but really want to watch the 5.1 with the added davros modulation and tweaked score when my set comes in.

You should still be able to hear it but you won’t get the benefit of the 5.1 surround sound

Well I was lucky on that score. Monday was my last day of work before Christmas .as I always I always work 2-10 pm and after Mondays shift my brother was picking me and we was going back to his house in Suffolk till next Tuesday . It was just delivered just before I was leaving the flat to go to work. Otherwise I don’t know what would have happened, leave it behind the wheelie bin for over a week, that would not have done it much good would it. Here’s hoping for season 9 next. Have a great Christmas everyone and hopefully a much better New Year.

Bit of a leap but ‘The Dalek Tapes’ being on this set when it was originally on ‘The Daleks’ DVD does this mean they could be working on series one and there was no room for this feature??? .

Loved the Tom Baker commentary on ‘Destiny’ I could listen to Tom all day!

It’s probably on destiny due to space availability. Remembrance will probably have tons of special features so that’s probably why it’s not on there and the Daleks being a 7 parter and in a 60s season again doesn’t have too much space for an almost 1 hour long documentary

Mine arrived fine in great condition on Monday evening. I noticed Katy mentioning the she has watched Tom’s earlier stories. So maybe Season 13 will be released next year (?)

      Lets hope so.

I guess it could be a reference to S12 and S14 which are already out but S13 is a great season in itself – some very strong stories and performances I feel.

It wouldn’t surprise me if they hold it back in the range for release later – purely due to how well regarded it is.

I’m not particularly fussed what comes next to be honest, I’m invested now and have all releases up to this point so I will be getting all of them (if I can) to complete the range on my shelf.

I have hope that some or all of the B&W seasons will be held back until animations are more complete. At this point I cant say I am fond of the notion of a release now using tele snaps for some stories – then a super duper / special edition re issue in a few years time including any new animations that hopefully will have been done by then

I think 13 will be the next Tom, don’t believe they will deliberately holding any back, 12 and 14 already done, it’s not like the DVDs when it was one story at a time, these are whole series with many factors involved on which ones are practical to work on, Covid restrictions a factor too. I think they will round up the Hinchcliffe years sooner rather than later

I’d like to see some Black and Whites asap, I don’t think they will delay all six in time for animations. I’d at least like to see Two and Six released only one partially missing stories on each I’ll take telesnapes when 90 per cent of the series exists

She also could have watched it when the original episodes aired. I really hope they do 15 sooner rather than later. It will probably be the last chance to get Tom Louise and John all together on screen for the extras (doctor’s table please) plus it’s the earliest remaining season where both the doctor and companions are still around. Season 16 is very well represented already in terms of extras so I feel that could wait till last.

I think season 9 is next due to the rumoured new sea devil’s feature and the fact that it’s the 50th anniversary for that season next year, then I think it would be about time for an 80s season so season 22 will probably be next due to the filming being done for that set and then another Tom set, so hopefully 16 or 13 but as Gordon has mentioned will probably be 15. I’m more than happy with any season

I always get my copies from Argos on release day and collect in person, not this time! For the first time since these started coming out – they don’t appear to be stocking S17
    Not good!

Devastated!! My set came with the “last tray ripped from the back” syndrome!
Quick dabs of Superglue soon fixed that. Unnoticeable!

    Now to enjoy

Received my set this morning but have to wait till Christmas.
I would love it if we could get all of new Who released as part of this range eventually. It would be awesome to get a complete matching set of all episodes Hartnell to Whittaker.

I quite agree that is my sincere hope too.

I think it’s prob been enough time since initial airing to do 9 and 10, maybe 11 just about.
But 12 and 13 May be a few years off yet. Some time has to pass to make it worth doing the reflective interviews and behind the sofa etc.

      But one day, who knows

Has anyone watched anything on this set yet, and if so what do you think? I’m sitting on the fence on whether to buy, as the extras don’t grab me…

@Mark – no I haven’t just yet – but if you have the others in the range – I would just get it anyway

Are we better storing these horizontally? Obviously not more than maybe 1-2 high. But is this a better shelving approach to avoid degluing getting even worse over time?
