Does this include the 136 minute movie version of Talons of Weng Chiang, as per the original VHS release…?

I wish the inner sleeves were made of card instead of flimsy paper- some arrive with bends and creases where they have been inserted carelessly.

Does the bonus disc for season 14 have the studio clocks on like season 8, 10 & 12 do for example? I have not seen them listed among the included details.

Do these Standard Packaging Releases contain any improvements from the limited edition sets or just re pressings of the original releases ? I remember the season 19 limited edition set had a few mistakes in a few stories .

Any discs that got a replacement disc (sontaran experiment, revenge of the cybermen, leisure hive) will have that disc included instead of the original. Meglos got one of the writers name fixed for the standard edition. Everything else is the same. The booklet is also smaller

If it’s coming out in March (Swiss website leak) then an announcement should be fairly soon

Regarding the animation situ. Very well said below by Gordon; HD scans of the telesnaps, and remastered sound by Mark Ayres. I would imagine any lacking Telesnaps could be composites similar to the YouTube work by Josh Snares.

It is hypothetical at this moment, but with the content above, the quantity of extras we usually receive in a collection set, and all exsisting animations in HD (possibly even disc swapouts in the future if/when animations are made) For a physical release of a classic television series this would be an above and beyond release, regardless of the animations (Personal favourite animation is the Invasion)

I think in that context, a completionist will be sure to enjoy a 60s collection release in this kind of shape and form, especially if we have a release in 2023

Even if the missing episodes on the season sets are filled with reconstructions it still would be more attention to missing episodes than most other shows. Only a handful of shows I can think off have some sort of reconstruction representing their missing episodes and none of them are of the quality of the recent doctor who recons. I know some won’t be happy unless the collection sets have animations representing the missing episodes which is fair enough but the fact we will probably be getting discs dedicated to just recons and also including special features is just astounding. No other show dedicates that much to missing episodes

    • Mark

      January 18th, 2022 - 1:53am

That’s exactly it. With the recent news and posts on the animations paused, and what it means for the 60s, I didn’t feel there was enough positivity or emphasis on explaining to new fans of the audio restoration work (as was nicely explained on The Invasion dvd), or the dedicated work of the telesnaps by John Cura (Real snapshots taken of the missing episodes, real frames), and of course to the present day editing demos of just how far picture quality improvement (upres’d from small jpegs) and as acurate as possible composites for Classic Who can really go, as shown on Josh Snares’ YouTube channel.

I totally agree, ‘dedicated recons’ is what I’m looking forward to also, if we are at all to have any announcements on 60s boxsets.

Who knows, whatever the future animation schedule is to be, I think there’s still a lot to look forward to with these sets.

Fans have much to thank John Cura for, so I was always surprised that fans didn’t club together to have his grave made presentable when it was shown to be in such a poor state. The prominent ones who do social media could have set something up fairly easily I’d have thought. But as far as I know it’s still just another neglected grave even now.

    • Mark

      January 18th, 2022 - 3:04pm

@Rex that’s very sad to read. I would suggest something like a fundraiser section in DWM would be thoroughly deserved without doubt.

These snaps are real pieces of history, and presented restored on Blu Ray on dedicated discs with the right sound, and snappier editing, for me would make up for any animations absent.

I would be very curious to know if any further surviving material will be included into any (hypothetical) dedicated retcon discs… one scene that springs to mind is the uncovered Lesterson scene photos/prints from Power of the Daleks that went to auction not too long ago (I think people were making moving gifs out of the screenshots on twitter)

On top of audio and telesnaps are the surviving video shots of the 60s, as well as the work done today on YouTube. As an example again, Power of the Daleks. The close ups of Patrick Troughton looking into his mirror, the shots were deflickered, white tv lines removed, image stabilized, frames inserted to fill empty gaps, the list goes on. Made by the fans, is incredible.

I’m sorry to say big animations are finished. We won’t see minor story’s worked on again either. It will be either UWM by Shapeshifter or 4 parters by then.

Just my opinion. I feel we were lucky with BBC Store and BBCA

Now that the animations have been canned it will be interesting to see if the black & white seasons are even released at all. Season 2 is heavily rumoured to be coming out later this year, so we might get an answer sooner rather then later. But Season 3 is a real problem now, especially as most of the LC recons have been available online for years now. Unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat, with no more animations, I probably won’t be buying Seasons 1-6 on Blu-Ray. (The 60s is my favourite era too!)

On a much more positive note though, the next standard re-release is Season 8! Genuinely can hardly wait!!!!

It hasn’t been canned. Its just bbc America’s funding is ending. According to the radio times the bbc are actively looking for a new partner. It might not happen straight away but I’m sure they will get another partner at some point down the line. Underwater menace is also a possibility on its own without additional funding.

      January 17th, 2022 - 7:29am

Regarding the lc telesnap recons. Yes they are almost all available online but in sd and are over a decade old. The collection sets will have improved reconstructions over those currently available online. Hd scans of the telesnaps. Remastered sound by mark Ayres and the option to use the narrated soundtrack or not plus it will have subtitles for those that require them

I think I got seasons 18and 19 at HMV here in Leeds, but they don’t seems to stock any of them after that. Although they are selling the standard collections. I have bought all the others one off Amazon and I see they are not stopping Visa cards just yet as originally planned .

also, the lady said the the more recent ones were not being stocked unless pre-ordered as i mentioned to her that i used to see some of them in store before, she said after lockdown, pre-order and pick-up seems to be their general method so the chances of coming by them instore are increasingly minimal

I hope If the animations are coming to an end, at least for the time being, we can start getting some 60’s collection sets out.
There’s no reason why if more animations are completed in the future they could not be released on Blu-ray in The Collection style packaging so the discs could simply be swapped out into the season sets.

Judging from past experience they will most likely release them individually first and then do a Box Set later.

If indeed there is no more funding for the Classic animations, they might aswell start bringing out these early Collections sooner rather than later.
I know alot of people mentioned leaving the first six seasons until last to give a chance for all the animations to be finished. But this no longer seems to be in the equation.

No more funding doesn’t mean no more animations. It’s just the end of bbc America’s involvement. Even if they don’t find alternative funding cheaper and easier alternatives could be found instead. A lot has changed in terms of animation since the 2 ep limit from a decade ago. Bbc is actively looking for new backers according to the radio times so I wouldn’t rule out things being dead. Even if they didn’t find anyone now that doesn’t mean they won’t find someone else in a couple of years. It’s on pause rather than dead. As for bringing out seasons 1,2 and 6 they could bring out pretty much any time. 5 can wait a little which might give wheel an advantage if they don’t manage to secure new funding till a little bit later

Would be a good idea Gordon, bring out the Seasons soon that are virtually complete anyway and maybe leave the couple of Seasons that are way off complete a couple of years to give time for more Animations to be done incase the BBC does find another backer.

Makes me wonder if we might get another release before the end of the year. I know there’s usually a couple of years gap between the limited editions and these editions, but it does leave along gap until the next one would be due.

    • Gordon

      January 14th, 2022 - 8:44pm

I do think there will be another standard edition this year but I doubt it will ever be fully caught up going by what those involved have said.

      January 14th, 2022 - 10:16pm

I doubt it will catch up to the limited editions as more would jump over to standard but the limiteds at the end of the day you pay for an earlier release, exclusive packaging and extensive booklet only.
