I don’t know what more they could have realistically done. The amount that Sony dadc manufactured was severely hampered by the Coronavirus and the global pandemic. Sure they could have delayed it again until they could have gotten significant stock but that could be some time and the length of delay probably wouldn’t have gone down well. The cancellations for day 1 buyers and late arrivals are a problem but that’s more on amazon zoom etc than the people that made the sets

      May 17th, 2020 - 10:07am

I’ve no idea how many were manufactured, but there were enough to ensure the set was number 2 in the U.K sales chart for the week ending 10 May 2020.

Mine arrived from Spain this am. They shipped it in a thin jiffy bag so inevitably the front was pushed in and corners bruised. For such an expensive item it’s a shame they didn’t protect it with adequate pachaging.

The corner problems are definitely avoidable, but the pushed in fronts look like they’re often a consequence of production. I’ve had those on Collection copies sent in well-packed cardboard boxes, and they’re pushed in all along the line – something that would be hard to do accidentally. The part under the cardboard slip is also fully pushed in, without the slip showing any signs of marking or pressure. My guess is that at least one of the factory’s machines is slightly misaligned in comparison to the others. And it’s irritating.

Their response time is terrible. I emailed them on the 27/04/2020 about a failed payment and it took them until the 12/05/2020 to reply by which point they cancelled the order so I had lost out and basically gave a one-line reply. Fortunately I managed to get a copy from Zavvi but from now on I’ll go with HMV as they have never let me down…

I can picture the trailer for the troughton release. An old man penning his memoirs why,ll recounting monsters and tales of an adventurer in an old blue wooden box. At the end he gets up walks out looking out onto the highlands and says something like ‘And i remember it all’ an elderly Jamie from the clan mclaren in full jacobite regalia.

      May 15th, 2020 - 7:35am

That would be great but the Timelord’s erased all Jamie’s memories of the Dr bar the Highlanders story… I like your idea though.

    • The Ergon

      May 15th, 2020 - 11:04am

Thats the irony of it and there were the other big finish stories. Maybe the Timelord memory wipe faded.

    • daz

      May 15th, 2020 - 11:41am

      I like your idea.

Well the 10th Doctor supposedly visited all the companions as part of his ‘reward’. Maybe he saw Jamie and did his mindmeld thing to give him his memories back?

    • RPG74

      May 15th, 2020 - 1:34pm

Ten visited all of Ten’s companions, only. If he’d visited all of the Doctor’s previous companions, his death throes would have lasted several days, and the final ten minutes of End of Time 2 would have been twice as insufferable. I think Tennant milked it quite enough, thanks. Anyway, unblocking Jamie’s mind could have ramifications for the timeline.
I do like the idea of Old Jamie in a promo though. But done in a hopeful, yet faintly tragic kind of way. He’s a happy man, he’s led a good life- and yet, he can’t help but feel that there was something MORE. That he was, perhaps, more significant in some way. But as to how, and in what form, he just can’t remember…
Then, we cut to the Troughton/Hines montage.

    • The Ergon

      May 15th, 2020 - 2:00pm

i think thats the point i was trying to make. A family man with a life lived but wistful. You get the idea.

    • daz

      May 15th, 2020 - 2:05pm

      RPG74.

He didn’t actually. RTD stated it in The Writers Tale, and it is hinted at in SJA ‘Death of the Doctor’ which he also wrote. We only saw 10’s companions on screen coz it wouldnt have made any sense to the audience in 2009/10 and would have been a full episode in itself.

If you think Tennant milked it would you say that Capaldi did too? He get an episode and a half out of refusing to regenerate.

    • eog

      May 15th, 2020 - 2:06pm

well in death of the doctor 11 said he went back to see jo and implied he saw everyone before he regenerated so guess we will never know!

    • DoctorRomanaTARDIS

      May 15th, 2020 - 3:16pm

I love the idea of both Jamie and Zoe regaining their memories of The Doctor and their travels, they are one of my favourite TARDIS teams.
oh BTW RPG74 The 10th doctor looked back on ALL of the companions not just 10’s, the 11th Doctor mentions it to Jo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMx9GprIum4&feature=emb_logo

    • RPG74

      May 15th, 2020 - 5:30pm

It’s been a while since I watched Death of the Doctor daz, but I always took Eleven’s comment to Jo as referring to a general ‘looking in’ on his old companions, every now and then, discreetly, over many years, and not as something that he took care of once, in quick succession, subsequent to the Four Knocks. If Russell Davies ever suggested otherwise, then I have to say I think that was one of his sillier ideas.

  • Things that go bump in the night

    May 14th, 2020 - 10:35am

I have a technical clarification to ask of these classic Doctor Who Collection season sets, given the various ways the new series has been previously handled on blu ray. Of course, I ask this of anyone who knows for sure…

Are the Blu Ray discs in this UK limited edition fully mastered for 1080i50?

Are the Blu Ray discs in the US set fully mastered for 1080p24?

In other words are there two separate mastered assets, or is one of the releases a conversion from a single asset?

I think it’s common knowledge that many of the new series UK Blu Ray sets used a single 1080p24 asset that was standards converted for UK 1080i50 releases resulting in a 4% ‘speed up’ and the audio had to be pitch corrected.

And I believe this was done because the vast majority of US televisions can only handle 60Hz or 24p frame rates – given the US was considered the larger market for the new series therefore this was the preference to save costs to prepare only a single master asset.

Therefore, does anyone know for sure that these ‘The Collection’ sets are the true ‘original’ run time in the UK sets, as well as being separately mastered for the US TV handling needs?

    Thank you

      Yes.

Are the Blu Ray discs in the US set fully mastered for 1080p24?

The episodes in the US set are 1080i60 to be fully compatible with US TV sets. They are carefully converted from 1080i50 and run at the same speed.

      May 14th, 2020 - 8:23pm

For what it’s worth, I cannot see a speck of difference between the UK and US discs in terms of picture quality. They’ve taken all the UK disc assets and simply re-encoded them to 1080i60 – that’s it. On my computer, even each disc’s source information on, for example, “Tom Baker Complete Season Seven” registers as “Doctor Who S18”. The menu system and options remain precisely the same, and although you may not get the option of audio navigation or a Doctor’s voice announcing the disc title at the start, there are no pesky PUOs (meaning you’re not forced to sit through logos and copyright warnings) as per the UK discs.

Having said that, if the US range continued the standard set by the first release (Tom Baker Complete Season One) I may have ditched collecting the UK sets in favour of the US ones, in spite of the one missing special feature on that set, the unfavourable season naming convention they’ve adopted for the range and the pared down/simplified artwork. Not only was the whole cover a really good approximation of the UK set for that first release, but it also contained an excellent PDF version of the booklet on Disc Six. Not so any other set since (they haven’t even bothered to include the the disc contents insert on every release either) and the back cover is now always the same dull grey as the spine with the text thereon looking a bit like it’s been quickly thrown together in MS Word. All a bit sloppy, especially compared to the obvious care that’s gone into the presentation of the UK sets (transit damage notwithstanding…).

Just wondering if any one who preordered with simplyhe.com

      Hi Jason

I haven’t pre-ordered it from any of the 3 websites in Aussie land that ive found 🙂 its im just mentioning that those websites are still in the pre-order stage through you can not order it sent to the uk directly as the Aussie Gov as banned any direct exports from websites out of Aussie at the moment I don’t know the reasons for this per say so one would have to have it sent to an address in Aussie and then have it reposted to you. I have this ability as my best friend from school moved down under about 10ys ago so it shouldn’t be an problem per say for me 🙂 If I have to get it this way

      Hi Geoffrey,

That would explain why they didn’t like my address, thank you. Annoyingly I couldn’t find that information when I was searching for the reason why they wouldn’t deliver as I not had a problem in the past. To add to my annoyance my Australia contact emigrated back to the the UK in February so i’m not doubly unlucky. Guess I’ll just keep my eyes out for copies that aren’t 200% above retail, and worse case fallback on my US pre-order if all else fails. Thanks again.

So Ive ended up with 2 copies of Season 14, ( one from amazon.co.uk and one from amazon.es ). I’d be willing to let someone else have a copy but I will say (annoyingly) the front cover where it joins the spine is slightly pushed in and a slight dent on the corner, awful packaging considering they are made of cardboard, it’s not terrible by any means but least its a copy! If no one wants it I will send It back as damaged.

      May 14th, 2020 - 2:32am

I’ve also got a spare copy with similar problems to yours. I could get my money back, but I’m wondering if I should do a charity auction and try to make maximum money for a good cause. The other idea is to sell it for £50 for charity (plus my postage costs) so that more people have a chance to own it. I’d probably pick a winning name out of a hat.

I’d also write something like ‘charity prize’ in permanent marker on the shrink-wrap so that it couldn’t be relisted on eBay as new – at least not without the seller looking like a right git.

I’m guessing Booboo has my email address, so please get in touch if you have an idea on how to do this and would like to discuss it.

I wish people would read these listings carefully before making grand announcements on this site. The listing referred to a third party seller using Fullfilled by Amazon to deliver and they’ve even upped the price to £199 now…. Also season 23, is a US Amazon import, so do be careful if you order, price includes import duties, but not shipping, so looking at £70 to get that.

Had an email this morning that it was out for delivery and it was at my door an hour later. For anyone still waiting and worried and has the same expected date, I wanted you to see there’s still hope!

Got mine today. Been watching the Elizabeth Sladen tribute, it’s very moving. Happy to add it to the shelf with the others.

If anyone doesn’t want a copy then Argos has plenty of absolutely no stock on eBay still.

Because you wrote it, all is asked about is how the listing works that’s all i have not seen one like it before.

    • Rob W

      May 10th, 2020 - 6:15pm

I wouldn’t normally buy from eBay unless it was a reputable seller. If the link (ever) works then I would buy from Argos, you’re covered for faults, damage etc.

Argos generally tend to generate listing on ebay as well as their own website. One to keep on the watch list incase it comes back in stock.

    • booboo

      May 10th, 2020 - 6:36pm

i wasn’t aware eBay allowed listings where nothing was actually for sale to be honest never seen one like before.

      May 10th, 2020 - 10:31pm

I’ve seen it before on Ebay Argos store, I assumed it was a glitch, apparently not. Very disheartening.

    • Zarniwoop

      May 10th, 2020 - 11:15pm

So no-one’s managed to buy from this listing? Maybe it’s a place-holder for when stock comes in. Never seen this before either.

    • Inquisitor

      May 11th, 2020 - 12:04am

It’s a glitch, I’ve seen it before, the listings been in existance for about 6 days and should not be visible if out of stock, it should read as out of stock in a header at the top of the listing, and shouldn’t be searchable. It’s giving people false hope. So annoying.

Everyone knows Argos been out of stock since day 1…

    • Zarniwoop

      May 11th, 2020 - 12:39am

I suspect you’re right, it’s a glitch. If you go to the Argos ebay shop and search for Doctor Who, nothing shows up at all.

Mine arrived yesterday as well. I have to say I was surprised. I wasn’t expecting it as others received there’s some while ago.

I never received Season 12 from Zavvi though…..

Hi Ikeaman45, I understand this is very presumptions and cheeky, but if you are considering to get rid of your extra copy I’d be happy to buy it from you. Obviously price dependant. My Amazon pre-order has vanished and Amazon aren’t being much help, and everywhere I try is out of stock, or won’t deliver to me. So I figured why not ask. Nothing to lose by asking. Thanks.

I defy anyone not to have cried by the end of the documentary about Elizabeth Sladen, especially the bit where Tom Baker nearly broke down talking about her death. Brilliant documentary. And so lovely to see Sadie Miller show off Liz’s grandson at the end too ! Sad she did not live to see him grow up 🙁

I knew the bit where Tom broke down was coming as I’d read a comment about it. I buckled myself in and was determined not to shed a tear…but i failed. It was a lovely piece to watch.

That was great thanks Gordon what a nice chap.

I thought he was being interviewed by Adric for a moment.

Perhaps seasons 1-6 will have empty disk trays?

    • Gordon

      May 10th, 2020 - 9:48pm

I like the idea of having disc spaces being left for missing episodes. However I’d like the spaces to at least have discs in them with recons and extras which would you could swap out when animations get made.

      May 10th, 2020 - 11:52pm

      Lovely interview.

I’ve always expected missing stories to still have a disc tray space for them. Was good to hear it confirmed.

We’ll either get a disc with soundrack/telesnaps included and documentarys or they’ll leave tray and put it on another disc if space allows.

He made a good case about spoilers and highlighted the major flaw too.

It would be lovely to see the trailer without knowing what the release is but as he rightly says its always on Amazon before the trailer.

Interesting that he is working on two at any one time and planning a third, still makes me wonder what happened to series 17?

Glad he sounded out people selling these for profit and acknowledged that the problems of 14 are unique. Too many people on social media getting a little too nasty about this

Season 17 was intentionally made early because Lalla Ward wouldn’t be available at a later date to record for them.

My amazon order not changed as showing it will be delivered tomorrow but no updates…now Argos listing on ebay at retail price with 3.95 postage…..!!! I think I will just get the argos one as a back up. It will mean I end up selling the amazon one should it ever appear….God I am going to be seen as one of the scalpers!!!!

No, which is fairly typical, but still nerve-wracking considering how hard it is to get this particular box set. And even when (if?) they do finally send it, there’s a good chance it will arrive damaged, which has happened to me more than once. I only order from Zavvi as a backup in case I can’t get it from eBay, which is the case this time, but I don’t think I’ll bother in the future.

I’d be interested to see if there a pattern with the people who got their orders cancelled. I assume everyone who has their copy from amazon were the people who ordered first. First come first serve basically. It’s just confused me because I’m sure I ordered around 24 hours after the pre-order went up and I have mine. And I’m not a prime member.

I have no argument with Amazon. My copy arrived today along with the series 12 steelbook ( both long pre-ordered). Both in mint condition & things of beauty but let’s get things in perspective guys. It’s only a DVD. People are dying out there. Stay safe.
