BBC Studios announces Season 10 as the next installment in the DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION Blu-ray range

BBC Studios continues to offer Doctor Who fans the opportunity to build their own home archive on Blu-ray. The first jam-packed release for Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor, Doctor Who – The Collection: Season 10, debuts on Monday 8th July, the very day after Pertwee himself would have turned 100.

In 1973, Doctor Who celebrated its tenth anniversary with a very special story reuniting the first two Doctors – William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton – with Jon Pertwee’s then-current Doctor. The Three Doctors kicks off an explosive, colourful series of adventures across all of time and space as the Doctor and Jo Grant (Katy Manning) encounter the rogue Time Lord Omega, the terrifying Drashigs, the noble Draconians, fearsome Ogrons, deadly Daleks and slithering giant maggots. Season 10 also includes the final appearance of Roger Delgado as the Doctor’s arch nemesis The Master, plus adventures alongside Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney) and UNIT.

Starring alongside Jon Pertwee are Katy Manning, Nicholas Courtney, Roger Delgado, Richard Franklin and John Levene.

With all episodes newly remastered from the best available sources, this Blu-ray box set also contains extensive and exclusive special features which include:

  • A brand new feature-length documentary examining the Third Doctor’s Era, with archival contributions from Jon Pertwee, Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks plus all-new interviews with Katy Manning, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, presented by Matthew Sweet.
  • Updated special effects and surround sound mix for Planet of the Daleks.
  • Five new instalments of Behind the Sofa, featuring Katy Manning, Richard Franklin (Captain Yates) and John Levene (Sergeant Benton), along with 21st century Doctor Who panel Phil Collinson (Producer/Executive Producer), Pete McTighe (Writer) and Joy Wilkinson (Writer).
  • Looking for Lennie, a documentary investigating the life of director Lennie Mayne.
  • Keeping up with the Jones’, which sees Katy Manning with Stewart Bevan (Cliff Jones) pay a return visit to the Welsh locations from The Green Death.
  • Plus: a repeat omnibus of The Green Death unseen since Christmas 1973, rare Panopticon convention footage, Blu-ray trailer, HD photo galleries plus scripts, production files and rare documentation provided as PDFs.
  • The six-disc box set also includes hours of extensive special features previously released on DVD including two episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures that saw Katy Manning’s Jo Jones meet the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith).

A specially shot announcement trailer – and sequel to classic adventure The Green Death – has debuted on the Doctor Who YouTube channel; written by new series contributor Pete McTighe (Kerblam!) and starring original Doctor Who companion, Katy Manning.

DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION – SEASON 10 includes the following stories from 1972/73:

  • The Three Doctors
  • Carnival of Monsters
  • Frontier in Space
  • Planet of the Daleks
  • The Green Death

RRP: £56.16 and available from www.zoom.co.uk , www.amazon.co.uk and www.zavvi.com

    Hi everyone.

Has anybody noticed their Jcard (outer cardboard bit that disc box sits in) front cover picture not lining up very well this time round with Jon Pertwee on the box.

Wish I’d never noticed it but now my ocd won’t let me forget. I know its only about 3mm out. Saw a copy in hmv that was lined up perfectly and I’ve even watched a few unboxings on YouTube and everyones seems different… same as mine, slightly worse or perfect.

Only a little annoyance but still.

Loving the set. Watched 2 discs so far.

DrWhoFanJ. I think once I have more sets on my shelf it won’t bother me. Currently have covers on display with DVDs inbetween, but will eventually display only 1 season per Doctor that way.

I sent a message to Zoom but as I’ve opened set I can’t return it. I only noticed afterwards. I have emailled BBC too just as a cheeky ask to see if they will replace J Card. Not expecting anything but worth a try.

      Thank you for your email.

U.S. edition around £50 plus postage on Amazon.co.uk, but you might also get hit for import duties and VAT.

    • Lee

      July 10th, 2019 - 7:49pm

You don’t get hit with import or customs fees as it’s covered with their import fees deposit when using Amazon global shipping.
What they quote you at checkout is what you pay. They’ll tell you what the import fees deposit is at checkout.

With the deposit included it works out at £50. Just make sure you order directly from Amazon and not a 3rd party seller. You’ll get hit with customs if you buy from a 3rd party on there.

Unless youre prepared to fork out i can,t see you getting this cheap in the season 12 box, unless of course they reissue with amendments and corrected discs further down the line. I know its Limited Edition for a reason but they did a reissue of Season 16 on DVD which i believe was limited at the time but reissued as there was an outcry from fans that they were unable to get a copy. That series 9 steelbook is the worst. Now Going for £3-400. No chance. Next format please.

      July 11th, 2019 - 2:15pm

I suspect it will be reissued eventually, but in different packaging, since it’s only the packaging that’s the Limited Edition aspect of the release. I’m guessing of course, but I’m expecting it be similar to the US box and without the booklet.

    • The ergon

      July 11th, 2019 - 2:46pm

And its this packaging thats put me off collecting these. Now if it had been hard cardboard like they used for the DVD releases of the first three Hartnell stories. Sturdier packaging thats for sure, not thin paper/ cardboard. If i had these i would simply have to transfer the Blu-Ray discs to the DVD cases and vice versa to avoid wear and tear.

    • dazzleshell

      July 11th, 2019 - 11:13pm

The Ergon. It is hard cardboard for the book box. It is just the jcard that is the thinner cardboard.

    • The ergon

      July 12th, 2019 - 9:44am

It is hard card on the book style box but still prone to wear wheras the outside for the Hartnell DVD boxset ‘The Beginning’ had a thin plastic covering to strengthen the cardboard. They did this on the Season 16 boxset DVD but went thin card on subsequant others but it didn,t matter as the DVD cases them selves protected them. That jcard is thin and you have to be extra careful when taking the bookbox out. I prefer something more solid.

Has anyone got up to the Planet of the daleks disc yet? I’ve tried switching on the updated special effects option and there doesn’t seem to be any difference, I can’t see any updated effects. Usually I can go into change the angle option and it changes between these, but there’s no option to do that on mine.
What effects have been changed exactly?

    Anyone else noticed this?

Excellent CGI for Planet of the Daleks, but why no Dalek laser effects I wonder, and the same for the Thal weapons. Looking at the Day of the Daleks special edition where the laser effects, really add to the scenes, it is a missed opportunity with Planet. Loving the animal eyes in Ep 5 – much better!!!

70’s child. You just told me what I have wanted to know ALL ALONG.

I now know not to waste £40 if they weren’t going to go the whole hog and have proper Dalek gun beam/extermination effects and beam effects for the Thal weapons as with the special edition of Day of the Daleks. That just isn’t a missed opportunity:it’s downright stupid.Maybe they’ll be a special edition of this special edition showing them what else they should also have done in the first place here.Talk about false expectations.

So my verdict on this news as a Dalek might put it: “They have failed, they have failed, they have failed ,they have failed, they must SELF DESTRUCT !!!”

    • The Moffat Paradox

      July 11th, 2019 - 4:33pm

Mind you I did have some suspicions if there wasn’t going to be any new effects/GGI for the rest of the box set; such as no remastered Day Of The Daleks like Dalek gun affects when Skaro’s finest open fire when on the Ogron planet in the final part of “Frontier In Space” before “Planet.”

    • Anonymous

      July 11th, 2019 - 7:36pm

Have to say that although the new effect are very good, I leave the original effect on, as it was meant to be. How they were made originally really shows the hard work and great detail they achieved back in the day.

    • The Moffat Paradox

      July 11th, 2019 - 8:46pm

Of course “how they were made originally really shows the hard work and great detail they achieved back in the day” Anonymous but as with the digitally remastered with new effects/CGI original “Star Trek” the whole point is surely this is along the lines of what they themselves would have done if the had had the capability that’s available now even with the budget in todays money they had then.

There are always going to be those who are more conservative about this with old Sci-Fi but I think if your going to do this then you go the whole hog with new CGI and effects however discreetly used which is why if for things like weapon effects they weren’t going to follow in the footsteps of the 2010 edition of “Day Of The Daleks” I think that’s a let down and incongruous with the rest of what’s been done here.

I am so not techy, but even i can manage this ,put PDF files on the Handwindow for easier more later reading. around the 25-30 price range before promotions or sales.

Did any other Australians get a message from Sanity saying their order was cancelled because the of supplier? I ended up going to Zavvi and ordering the UK version which is still compatible but I don’t understand why it was cancelled and not just delayed if they were having issues. Also odd it happens the same day as it is released in the UK, as the Australian version wasn’t set to come out for a few more weeks.

I can’t even find a local supplier for the Colin Baker blu ray. Probably go with Zavvi for that now too.

Why ? It doesn’t need a new one. The one on the dvd was already a very good documentary. Plus theres nothing more they can add to it. Not a lot of people who was involved who are still around today can add much to it. Plus you have an extra behind the scenes of it in the third man when they talk about all the seasons of jon pertwee and then a behind the sofa with katy manning, Richard Franklin and john Levine on the three doctors so what more do you need.
I’d much rather they not waste a budget on a making of documentarie if it’s not needed rather more so for seasons 19 where all the stories that never had a making of documentaries got one.

Impressed with the contents of this set, but not so much with the quality of the packaging. The ‘box’ part that holds the discs on mine has been glued in really badly and is misaligned. I’m not going to be ultra fussy or expect it to be perfect but this is just no good for a collectors set. I have asked for an exchange from Amazon. Not the first time I have had a really shoddy set. I do wish they would take a little more care in the construction of the boxes.

Considering I used to work at amazon and know how they handle boxes at times I’m really not surprised that you’ve got a damaged one from them. Both my season 12 and 19 was badly glued on and coming off so I stopped ordering them on amazon. Since I ordered off zoom my season 18 and 10 have been in great condition and glued perfectly done. Although I do agree they should of used a much better glue as they one they currently use instead is isn’t really meant to be used as glue, it’s a glue kind that useally is used for Jay cards like with the dalek movie steelbooks. But then again after seeing how badly most youtubers open and show the sets I’m not surprised there sets are breaking. Take care off it. Or try and get replacement or order somewhere better.

    • booboo

      July 9th, 2019 - 4:55pm

just curious to know how would badly glued boxes effect the ones from Amazon and not zoom? as all your Amazon sets are like this are they being sent inferior products or something or is it just the way Amazon handle them?

    • Mike the yeti

      July 9th, 2019 - 6:38pm

Amazon aren’t always the best with handling boxes especially if theres a dead line to get them out. Off course I suppose you cant blame as they dont know what’s in the boxes or how fragile sometimes. Maybe I just have had the worst luck but my season 12 glue was all flaky and in 3 different chunks. So I had to glue it on myself witch doesn’t look to scruffy but not the cleanest. My season 19 had pulled off the base and ripped off part of Davisons top head. So I had to but a new box of ebay. I decided to go with zoom because of how early people got them and since then I’ve had no problems with the glue. Season 18 does has a few bubbles but it’s fine but season 10 looks great and I’m very impressed with it.

Both my season 12 and 19 was badly glued on and coming off so I stopped ordering them on amazon. Since I ordered off zoom my season 18 and 10 have been in great condition and glued perfectly

Very unhappy with Amazon. My set was just sent in an oversized Jiffy bag. So, of course, it arrived damaged (one corner bashed-in). Amazon did offer me a replacement, but there’s no point getting another one if they’re going to use unsuitable packaging…

Thanks, Jon. I’ve already posted my set back to Amazon for a refund, and re-ordered from Zoom. Have already pre-ordered Season 23 from Amazon. Could cancel it, but will see what happens and bear your experience in mind if I get an over-sized Jiffy bag again!

      July 10th, 2019 - 11:37pm

Sorry booboo but if your gonna qoute me at least dont take it out of contents like I’m trying to slander Amazon. Maybe if you read my other comment too youd see that. But what I wasnt clear on was that I worked at the warehouse of amazon although i thought it be obvious. I said at the beginning that due to Amazon’s schedules I dont blame them if packaging arrives damaged due to the the fact I know what its can be like if you have a dead line. The same can be said about royal mail who are probably the worst for handling packages. Then went on to say the glue they use inst the best and on my reply 2nd comment near the end I said season 18 still has some bubble issues on the glue but season 10 is fine. Also I said maybe it’s me and getting the worst luck which is most probably true. So not causing an argument but dont take it out off contents. Also I think zoom does deserve credit as I think there delivery is great. Plus 2 more people have just said they also had bad experiences with these sets from Amazon.

So make sure you have a photo on page 2 and the bonus disc and credits info on page 27.

I emailed roadshow entertainment in Australia about the replacement discs just yesterday and received a reply apologising for the delay and stating that they are still waiting on delivery of the new discs from the UK. So hopefully the replacements are still going ahead. If not I will definitely think twice about investing in future releases.

      Update, just got this:-

      “Dear Rob

      Thank you for your email.

The Disc 1 from Season 18 is being worked on.

We will despatch to all customers we have noted details for once the corrected disc is available.

We are awaiting further details with regards to Season 19.

      Regards

Rob, why had you given up hope of receiving the replacement? They’ve said they’re going to replace them, but it takes time. They gave an estimated time frame of 6 weeks. But it’s exactly that, just an estimate.
I had to wait over 3 months to get a replacement disc for another BBC non-Who related boxset, but they still delivered it.

      Patience – it’ll turn up! 😉

It’s because Season 19 came out in December mate andI no longer have the receipt. No doubt I’ll need to provide a photo with my details on then. Cheers…

How can you enquire about receiving the new Season 18 and 19 discs

    • Lee

      July 9th, 2019 - 9:55pm

You said you’d given up hope of receiving the Season 18 replacement though, so I was assuming that’s the boxset you were talking about?

Where did you buy it from? Online or in store? If it’s online then a copy of the email will do. If it’s in store, just explain that you don’t have the receipt and send them a photo of the boxset, that should be enough.

No idea what is happening with Season 19 yet.

    • Lee

      July 9th, 2019 - 10:00pm

Anon, for S18 you can email [email protected] and include a photo of the receipt/email you have.

For S19 I wouldn’t even bother yet, just wait until they announce they’re going to issue replacements for it. At the moment they’ve just said they’re looking into reported issues but that’s all.

I have to say l, i’m not minded to purchase this. If I already own the dvds I see no reason to double dip (which is the only reason I bought the season 18 set)-however, I may make an exception for season 11 if the Beeb produces a CGI redux of Invasion of the Dinosaurs. Given there was no CGI Robot for season 12 though, I wouldn’t hold out much hope for that.
As a side note, can anyone tell me if the US version of Season 19 works over here? I left it too late for the UK version, but I see the Region 1 version retailing for a reasonable price…

Well the reason Robot didn’t have new CGI is because there’s only enough budget for one story to get new CGI. For Season 12, that story was Revenge of the Cybermen. I wouldn’t get your hopes up for Invasion of the Dinosaurs because it might be far too much work for the budget to cover, but you never know.

As for a US copy of Season 19, it will work over here but only on region free blu-ray players. If its a UK only player, it will not work unfortunately.

      July 8th, 2019 - 12:21pm

What other story in season 11 needs better cgi effects. Please don’t say Planet of the Spiders. Those spiders look better than that other Series 11 spider episode. But some CSO could be altered easily in that story. We (well me) want(s) Invasion of the Dinosaurs!!!!

      July 8th, 2019 - 12:34pm

I don’t have a multi-region blu-ray player. But Season 19 does work perfectly so it must be region free. The same goes for seasons 12 and 18 which were released in the U.S also. The seller I bought Season 19 from online stated it was region A. But it clearly wasn’t.

    • d0od

      July 8th, 2019 - 12:39pm

No, but the Australian version does work over here as we’re the same region (and the Aussie version comes with the fancy packaging, the US version doesn’t). My Season 12 is the Australian version and plays perfectly.

Thanks everyone, particularly Dr Blu. In that case I think i’ll pull the trigger on Region A season 19, as shockingly, I don’t have any Davison on disc (just a few digital video serials in rubbish quality).
And to all those who were happy to double dip on season 10-enjoy your purchase!

I really wish Zoom delivered to the States. I have to use amazon UK instead, and their packaging methods lately have not been great. And I have to wait another two weeks for mine to get here, but that’s just part of having to import stuff. Loving this collection, I buy the UK and US versions of each so I can support it!

Oh my , this is so superb. The studio quality is stunning on 3 Dr`s and Carnical. and the film on Carnival is simply beautiful, not sure how they made this so good, without the actual film trims. 3Dr`s is a bit soft still , but very good.

If anyone is putting off buying this. The Looking for Lennie Documentary alone, should sway you. Simply wonderful , Toby Hadoke, has so much love and Compasion , and His family, were so kind to let us in on both the fun side and the sad sad of Lennie`s story.

The JP Documentary just beats everything the range has ever done. Amazingly good Documentary.

This season 10 Package might be My Favourite of the range so far.

I agree just watching carnival, it’s hard to believe they had no reference material for the film segments, it’s very good! Studio stuff looks excellent and looking for Lennie is a loving tribute one of Who’s great directors. I haven’t watched it all yet but I look forward to the JP era documentary. I love how they’ve included the Sarah Jane adventures episode on the set! Fantastic work. I also agree that is one of my top sets so far, up there with season 19 that had a great sense of completeness to it.

Because I missed out on the first release of Tom Baker’s first season on blu-ray and won’t pay the silly secondary market prices for it, I’ve not bought any of the others. I’m holding out a hope that when they are all released we might see one final complete blu-ray boxset for each of the Doctors. If the BBC is listening, then they’ll get my money.

I missed the first two releases. As I was in two minds whether to purchase the stories again on blu-ray, as I already had them on DVD. However, earlier this year I seen that the American release of Peter Davison’s first season was for sale online at a very reasonable price. So I bought it, taking a bit of a gamble as it was stated as Region A. Surprisingly it worked absolutely fine. So I then purchased Season 18 and 12. The packaging certainly doesn’t look as nice as the U.K releases. But they at least come in sturdy blue plastic packaging. Also I’m not bothered that they call season 12, Tom Baker Season One for example.

You can get the imported region free version of Season 12 on eBay for £61.99. Free PP. Dispatched from Wirral near Liverpool. Got to be better than spending £250 for one.

    • Lee

      July 8th, 2019 - 9:34pm

You can get the US version from Amazon.com for £50, and that’s including the import fees. I believe those work fine on UK players.
Will only take about 5 days to arrive.

I’ve actually ordered items several items from Amazon.com to the UK and I’ve received them faster than when I’ve ordered from Amazon UK! 😀

You could get hit by customs though

    • Lee

      July 8th, 2019 - 11:33pm

Amazon import fees deposit covers that. I’ve never had any import or customs fees from anything I’ve ordered from them. And I’ve ordered some fairly big items.
Think you only get hit with customs fees if it’s a third party seller.

    • Lee

      July 8th, 2019 - 11:45pm

That should have read “extra import fees”.
What I’ve paid at the checkout is the final amount I’ve paid every time. And because you pay the import fees deposit, it includes Customs clearance. Any additional customs fees are covered by Amazon.

And if the import fees work out less than the amount calculated at checkout, then it’s refunded back to you.

But it quite clearly states it’s season 10. I don’t get why you would be expecting anything other than the stories from that season. It doesn’t say the complete Jon Pertwee era. It’s not just a couple of specials either. The season is 24 episodes split over 5 stories

    Reply
    • Lee

What do you mean by plain? 3 of these stories already had special editions so you can’t expect there to be a lot more put on to those discs.

I think the whole boxset has an extensive set of special features. What exactly were you expecting? Not trying to cause an argument, but just wondering.

The only thing I would like to have seen is more studio footage (especially for Three Doctors), but if it doesn’t exist then there isn’t really much can be done about that. I’m happy with the boxset though.
