BBC Studios announces Season 10 as the next installment in the DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION Blu-ray range
BBC Studios continues to offer Doctor Who fans the opportunity to build their own home archive on Blu-ray. The first jam-packed release for Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor, Doctor Who – The Collection: Season 10, debuts on Monday 8th July, the very day after Pertwee himself would have turned 100.
In 1973, Doctor Who celebrated its tenth anniversary with a very special story reuniting the first two Doctors – William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton – with Jon Pertwee’s then-current Doctor. The Three Doctors kicks off an explosive, colourful series of adventures across all of time and space as the Doctor and Jo Grant (Katy Manning) encounter the rogue Time Lord Omega, the terrifying Drashigs, the noble Draconians, fearsome Ogrons, deadly Daleks and slithering giant maggots. Season 10 also includes the final appearance of Roger Delgado as the Doctor’s arch nemesis The Master, plus adventures alongside Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney) and UNIT.
Starring alongside Jon Pertwee are Katy Manning, Nicholas Courtney, Roger Delgado, Richard Franklin and John Levene.
With all episodes newly remastered from the best available sources, this Blu-ray box set also contains extensive and exclusive special features which include:
- A brand new feature-length documentary examining the Third Doctor’s Era, with archival contributions from Jon Pertwee, Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks plus all-new interviews with Katy Manning, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, presented by Matthew Sweet.
- Updated special effects and surround sound mix for Planet of the Daleks.
- Five new instalments of Behind the Sofa, featuring Katy Manning, Richard Franklin (Captain Yates) and John Levene (Sergeant Benton), along with 21st century Doctor Who panel Phil Collinson (Producer/Executive Producer), Pete McTighe (Writer) and Joy Wilkinson (Writer).
- Looking for Lennie, a documentary investigating the life of director Lennie Mayne.
- Keeping up with the Jones’, which sees Katy Manning with Stewart Bevan (Cliff Jones) pay a return visit to the Welsh locations from The Green Death.
- Plus: a repeat omnibus of The Green Death unseen since Christmas 1973, rare Panopticon convention footage, Blu-ray trailer, HD photo galleries plus scripts, production files and rare documentation provided as PDFs.
- The six-disc box set also includes hours of extensive special features previously released on DVD including two episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures that saw Katy Manning’s Jo Jones meet the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith).
A specially shot announcement trailer – and sequel to classic adventure The Green Death – has debuted on the Doctor Who YouTube channel; written by new series contributor Pete McTighe (Kerblam!) and starring original Doctor Who companion, Katy Manning.
DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION – SEASON 10 includes the following stories from 1972/73:
- The Three Doctors
- Carnival of Monsters
- Frontier in Space
- Planet of the Daleks
- The Green Death
RRP: £56.16 and available from www.zoom.co.uk , www.amazon.co.uk and www.zavvi.com

April 30th, 2019 - 11:30pmSupporting the releases, even have my copy of the Collection Season 10 pre-paid on Amazon UK – I have collected this range since the pre-order for Season 12 and have had the good opportunity to get Seasons 18 and 19 in a similar fashion… i want to get these and would love the new series to get this treatment.
I wanna see Modern Doctors/Companions/Writters on Behind the Sofa…

April 25th, 2019 - 5:50pmI’m in the US and would like to pre-order. But the release date is in October. OCTOBER. Why is not 30th of July?! (or even 6th of August)

April 25th, 2019 - 5:55pmGiven they are replacing Disc 1 of the recent Season 28 boxset, still looking in to the problems with Season19, and also repressing discs for Red Dwarf I’m considering cancelling my order for this.

April 28th, 2019 - 12:38pmWhat’s wrong with the lesiure hive disc
Lee
April 28th, 2019 - 3:48pmThere’s something wrong with the mono or 5.1 mix on the audio track (I’m not sure which).
I’ll be honest, I didn’t even notice it, and it didn’t take away from the enjoyment of watching it.
I have emailed the BBC for a replacement, but as it’s still watchable, I don’t see it as an urgent replacement (for me anyway).
I’d be surprised if a lot of these boxsets didn’t need at least one replacement. There’s a lot of material in these boxsets, so I’m expecting some issues will be missed in future.
As long as they replace them, I’m not too bothered about it.
Rob W
April 28th, 2019 - 5:03pmThe 5.1 mix was mixed down to Mono so some effects may sound lower or you may/cannot hear them.
TigerMan1995
April 29th, 2019 - 3:50pmJust because of 5.1 surround sound isn’t correct? My Sontaran Experiment disc is still the old version. Because the dual-mono sounds fine in a stereo speaker for me. I’d rather have an alright Blu-ray Box with a few errors than one than doesn’t even have the proper files for the disc (happened to the French Series 4 DVD from 2012)
philip shaw
April 29th, 2019 - 4:17pmMy Leisure hive is fine, 5.1 and mono soundtracks seem fine, so perhaps it’s not all the discs need replacing.

April 24th, 2019 - 8:03pmI wonder if they’ll do the same blu-ray boxsets for the modern series, it’d look really good!

April 24th, 2019 - 9:01pmI thought it was a possibility until the announcement of the series 4 steelbook as I thought they were going to stop the steelbooks due to the gap between the series 3 and 4 release and the lack of effort put into the series 11 steelbook. But seeing the series 4 steelbook, I think they’ll just continue as they are…
The Flying Shark
April 24th, 2019 - 7:36pmYou know, I really hope they get round to releasing the spin-offs in the Collection range. Obviously, most people want the new series after the classics are done, and that might take up to 2030. I doubt physical media will even be around then, but the early episodes of SJA and Torchwood will be 15+ years old by then, Class just over 10, so the time would be right for reappraisals and reviews of the stories in their now historic context.
Anonymous
April 24th, 2019 - 8:59pmTorchwood could have Jack at the front of each set, with the monsters and villains, with the torchwood bay/Cardiff/rest of the torchwood team on the back.
SJA could have Sarah Jane on front with monsters and villains and attic/Mr Smith/gang on the back
Class… could have Quill on the front with the shadowkin, dragon, petals and lump of rock- maybe the weeping angels- and the back could have the board with Clara’s, Danny’s and Susan’s names with the Tardis next to it/ the kids on the back
Personally though, I would like the new series spin offs to be released as steelbooks like the new series- you can’t really mess up the consistency of these shows’ logos on the spine, with the main characters on the from and villains on the back. Much simpler design but could still come with more discs with new special features, I would love new interviews and documentaries for Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures, perhaps learn more about the planned Series 5 of SJA, we dont know much about the finale but we know what the 4th story would have been and it would be nice to know, now that the wizards vs aliens episode has aired, to know how the Thirteenth Floor would have played out in the Sarah Jane adventures.

April 24th, 2019 - 6:53pmIf episodes were ever animated after the release of a collection boxset from seasons 1-6, it would be nice to be able to order a new disc with the new animation on to replace the recon that may have been sold in the set, just so people collecting the sets who want the animation can safely store the disc inside a collection boxset, rather than have an entirely standalone story amongst the season box sets on the shelf.
Daz
April 24th, 2019 - 10:46pmI hope they have a disc tray per story still so that if a story is found or animated we can slot the disc into the collection set.
If they do a disc per story on future sets, even if it just has the soundtrack on with telesnaps, we can swap them too.
I have been buying ‘The Doctors’ dvds and intend to store them in a relevant collection in a plastic slip case sleeve. I even keep the dvd booklets, trim them down and store them in season sets.
Gordon
April 24th, 2019 - 10:58amI hear ep 3 of planet of the Daleks has been recoloured for this release as to take advantage of improvements in technology. The colours are also much more accurate this time round according to Peter crocker. With this the 90 minute pertwee era documentary (the longest made documentary specifically for the dvd/blu ray range) the keeping up with the Joneses and looking for Lenny documentaries, the 5.1 mix and alternative effects for planet of the Daleks and the omnibus version for green death not seen since the 70s it looks like it’s going to be the best collection release so far
James
April 24th, 2019 - 12:36pmAgreed Gordon. Must say I’m really looking forward to this.
Pkus Chris Chapman has said he’s working on a documentary for a ‘historic’ release for next year. I’m thinking it will be Season 1 (first season, introduced all main characters and Daleks) with a recon of Marco Polo.
the 14th doctor
April 24th, 2019 - 2:06pmpossibly, that would be great but i think they might wait til the 60th anniversary for that one.
Anonymous
April 24th, 2019 - 5:50pmOut of all the 60s series, Season 2 seems the most likely. The Crusade isn’t getting an animation (far too expensive, regardless of length).
Season 1 will likely be left for the anniversary.
James
April 24th, 2019 - 5:59pmPossibly yes, but is Season 2 really as ‘historical’ as Season 1?
You say The Crusade isn’t getting an animation, but the same is true of Marco Polo. Too many costumes and different sets to animate so Seasons 1 & 2 are just as likely as one another. Bear in mind the anniversary is 4 years away and Seasons 3-5 will be most likely released last because of the amount of missing episodes in those seasons and the B&W seasons have been confirmed to not all be at the end of the release schedule so I really don’t believe they will wait that long to release Season 1 given that it, Season 2 and Season 6 are relatively easy to release as Marco Polo and The Crusade can easily be released with recons, and the same for Space Pirates as I don’t see any great demand for that to be animated anytime soon.

April 25th, 2019 - 2:48amI figure we will get season 6 next year around Patrick’s 100th birthday in March.
Prowl
April 25th, 2019 - 6:03amI’m guessing it will be Season 20. That pic he shows of the four Tardis cookie jars makes me think of The Five Doctors. And it was a historic season sense it was the 20th anniversary. And I believe a lot of the location filming for The Five Doctors still exist, so some of the Special could be presented in true HD.

April 23rd, 2019 - 5:44amI have heard a rumour that the Australian release of Season 18 is in different packaging to the previous sets. Can anyone confirm this?
If this is true I will be very disappointed when my copy finally arrives. I will probably not purchase future sets if there are going to be constant faults on the discs and inconsistent presentation with the packaging. Sad as I was looking forward to owning the complete collection one day.
LondonJC
April 24th, 2019 - 2:06pmYes,the Australian packaging was slightly different for season 18 – it was more of a book style package inside a slip case. Styling was consistent with the first two sets, but the size is different. The Aus set is about the same depth as regular blu-rays so doesn’t jut out from the shelf as much as the other two sets. Slightly annoying inconsistency, but on the plus side it’s much simpler to get the discs out with this new style.
(To be honest I had no idea it was only the Aus packaging that was different…)

April 22nd, 2019 - 4:17pmIs there any plans to release this digitally, they did it for the season 12 release but haven’t for any of the others. The BBC store was releasing them before it sadly closed but not many options for classic who digitally at present.
Jon
April 22nd, 2019 - 11:32pmGood question. I have been really confused as to why only season 12 got released digitally. Almost like they did it to help out those who missed out on the physical release and don’t have £300 to get it now!!! Not going to hold-out much hope of a digital release, looks like season 12 was a one-off.

Anonymous
April 17th, 2019 - 3:40pmHere’s a point, whenever anyone says they aren’t buying these bluray sets we get lots if comments about quality and how great they are. Now please read this to the end, like Tim m I bought the vhs then the DVDs now as far as I’m concerned these are pointless to me, I have the DVDs and for the sake of slightly better quality and some new extras it’s just not worth it. Consider how much I spent on buying the DVDs, roughly £75 then add the extra cost of these and it just doesn’t work for me. Right now note that, for me. For people who don’t have these on DVD or just want to buy everything that’s fine, i have no problem with the sets being released.
Now this is the point I want to make. These are marketed as limited editions. Once gone they are gone. But that means that if every fan who bought the DVDs wanted one there are going to be many who miss out. I have a friend who couldn’t get series 12 unless they paid silly money therefore they haven’t bothered to buy anymore sets. As he says what’s the point in having 25 seasons on his shelves if one season is missing? Please just accept that these bluray sets aren’t for everyone.
Rob W
April 17th, 2019 - 4:57pmI don’t think all 26 seasons will make it to blu-ray. Just buy what you enjoy, it doesn’t make you any less of a fan does it? I’ll be buying this and Season 17.
Robert Sienicki
April 17th, 2019 - 5:02pmI think they said that they hope for all 26 seasons. I just hope for as much as they can 🙂
daz
April 17th, 2019 - 5:18pmI was on the fence at first but bought Season 19 to take a look.
The packaging and booklets are great and is the main reason I now buy the sets. The extra features are good too. They take up less space, less discs and the old features are in the right place on 1 disc with the story they fit with. And yes, I ended up paying a lot for Season 12 through Ebay.
I sell my old DVDs at CEX once I know a set is definitely in the works. I sold Season 10 and 26 at the start of the year. But I keep the booklets as with a bit of trimming they fit into the season boxes.
I bought a lot of Who on VHS, then DVD so the BBC have made a lot out of me. But this is the best way to enjoy the series again for me and will be the final time I buy them.
But every fan is different. Just like every Doctor. Do what is right for you.
The ergon
April 17th, 2019 - 8:11pmConsidering everything that happened wth season 12 with misspelt credits, effects the packaging and 4:3 original ratio put me off , simply because i can play it 4:3 on a standard HD TV but maybe i would consider buying sets in the future for specific stories and replace them instead/inside of the DVD discs. The extras for the Blu-Rays are outstanding, theres no denying that although it would be more improved if the New CGI were permanant on separate Discs and the original effects were on a separate disc.
Gordon
April 17th, 2019 - 8:47pmI own some of season 10 on vhs. I got the whole of season 10 on dvd and in the case 3 doctors carnival and green I bought twice and I’m very much looking forward to owning in Blu Ray. If you have no interest in this set it’s fine but in my opinion If there is something I’m not interested in I just don’t bother commenting on it instead of posting saying I’m not interested in it. In my opinion Life is just too short to spend discussing something I’m not interested in. Don’t really understand why you would need to split the normal and cgi versions to separate discs. Blu Ray has about 7 times the space of dvd. There is more than enough room on a blu ray tofit both versions on the same disc. Splitting them would use unnecessary plastic and add additional cost to the product.
The ergon
April 17th, 2019 - 9:38pmIts just that i love what they have done with the Blu-ray editions. I prefer permanent as well as optional to differentiate the two. Its just to satisfy the likes of myself and the original purists and although Bluray is no longer a modern format, i would maybe have considered buying all of these if that option had been available. Thats just how i feel. Bluray has come too late in the game considering were now into 4K and SK and it s going to take some years to get this particular format out. Its great don,t get me wrong, and this generation will lap it up who did not spend 13 years+ collecting the DVDs.
The ergon
April 17th, 2019 - 11:57pmThe main reason for the split is the permanence and to differentiate. Also the optional doesn,t always work on the DVD. I can,t speak for the Bluray editions.

Anonymous
April 17th, 2019 - 11:04am26 in December yes. Sorry to disappoint though, 17 is very unlikely this year. Aiming for 4 sets a year means the range will last until the end of 2024. That’s 5 years. And there are 5 Tom seasons left. The producers want the range to last to allow all seasons to be released so it’s pretty much guaranteed that we’ll get the Toms spread out at a rate of one per year alongside other Doctors. 17 is possibly next years Tom set as they are banking extras with Lalla before she moves to Hong Kong.
sure the other set for this year will be 22. Makes sense to have a Colin set and a Sylvester set after 10 as then all Doctors have had a release from 3-7

Ed stradling’s ‘Doctor Who and the Third Man’ is around 90mins, ‘Looking for Lennie’ is 40 and ‘Keeping up with the Joneses’ a pacey 31 minutes!
