Doctor Who Series 1-4 Blu-ray Newly Upscaled Versions

Available to order from www.amazon.co.uk

In its 60th anniversary year, newly upscaled versions of sixty Doctor Who episodes from the Ninth and Tenth Doctor’s eras are coming to Blu-ray.

These new episodes are now available to pre-order in one Blu-ray set. For the ultimate fan, this collection includes every episode and special from the first four series freshly upscaled to high definition using the latest technology, plus the Tenth Doctor specials, existing bonus features and a new specially shot extra, A Look Back Through Time and Space with Russell T Davies and David Tennant.

The boxset features newly upscaled versions of episodes from the following series.

Series 1

Christopher Eccleston plays the Ninth Doctor, an alien and a loner (it’s difficult keeping up with friends when your day job involves flitting through time and space) who meets Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), a shop-girl from the present day. From the moment she meets the Doctor, they click. They understand and complement each other. As they travel together through time, encountering new adversaries, the Doctor shows her things beyond imagination. The trip of a lifetime begins!

Series 2

The complete second series introduces David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor, with Billie Piper returning as Rose. The Doctor and Rose travel across the Universe, facing dangers and thrills at every turn. Whether that’s in Victorian Scotland facing a Werewolf, or on an impossible planet orbiting a black hole.

Series 3

The third series of Doctor Who is full of new adventures, new laughs, new heartbreak and some terrifying new monsters. From the moment the Doctor walks into the life of medical student Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), he changes it forever. But whatever you do, don’t blink!

Series 4

David Tennant is back in his role as the Doctor in the fourth series of the hit sci-fi show! Award-winning comedienne Catherine Tate returns as the Doctor’s new companion, Donna Noble in this epic series that culminates in the Doctor’s friends coming together to stop the Daleks!

The Complete Specials

Five specials complete the Tenth Doctor’s journey as he meets new friends, familiar faces and comes face-to-face with an old enemy in a year of special adventures.

This Complete Specials includes all the Doctor Who Specials from 2009 – The Next Doctor, Planet of the Dead, The Waters of Mars, The End of Time – Part One and The End of Time – Part Two.

This boxset features eighteen discs containing sixty episodes of timeless adventures, remembered forever!

Only 6 weeks to go and no artwork confirmed as yet?

Cutting it a bit close surely?

Yes I thought that. Probably going to be similar to the individual artwork in the upcoming nu who set that’s coming out with a possible slipcase?

May look like the 9/10 doctor set from the 1-13 series box set coming out. Hope it does and they do 5-7 and 8-10

Can anybody tell what the difference is with the blurays of season 1 to 4 released a few years back (which I already own) and this one. Aren’t they just the same Blu-ray quality?

Apparently the originals had the wrong speed and the sound wasn’t right. I never noticed to be honest!

For those in need it has dropped £5 to £49.99 on Amazon since yesterday.

Currently sitting as the Best Seller in Scifi so get your pre-order in quick before it goes back up. And remember Amazon don’t take money til dispatch.

I’m still not sure I need it but will decide for definite once the artwork and actual box is revealed.

Fingers crossed im wrong but i have a feeling this release is a litteral re-release of the previous blu-rays (except for the remastered episodes and the new extra), they have either put a lot of effort in this release by fixing the errors and maybe by adding a new main menu for each series aswell or it is just a lazy release with the errors still there and the same main menu (i do like the tardis console menu because it is just nostalgic but it would be something a little extra if it was different in this release) which as i said would basically make it a literal re-release

The main selling point is that the episodes have been upscaled. That’s why it’s being rereleased, all existing bonus features are there so sounds pretty good to me. The trailer isn’t a great advertisement as it’s very pixelated. For the price it’s pretty good.

It’s probably not gonna happen but it would be cool if they included the website ‘podcasts’ as additional commentary here.
If you don’t know, for series 2 till End of Time, the BBC released a commentary track, or podcast (but basically commentary) both available on the Sunday of an episode broadcast via the red button, and on their website (which you can still listen to now, you just have to go find it via Clips on the Doctor Who Website, easier if you search by series), which wasn’t the same as the DVD commentary for the most part. A few exceptions where the web commentary is the same as DVD like I think Runaway bride.
But it would be cool if these were also added as commentary to this set. Especially for the 2009 specials (excluding EOT) which didn’t even get DVD commentary.

And what would be even cooler is new commentaries for following series because annoyingly the commentaries decreased from Moffat’s tenure (they probably nicked it from the budget to make such a fancier looking series) and if they could do it for SJA (they couldn’t afford it at the time) that would be brilliant. Only Death of the Doctor had commentary in the Green Death Special edition DVD.

Odd as the complete series is available on dvd only yet 4 and 5 were on blu ray also. Hopefully after The Collection team have finished the Classic series maybe they’ll fo similar boxsets for Totchwood and SJA (either as 1-4 and 1-5 or single season sets). Aswell as NewWho but maybe do Era sets like this one coming out. RTD 1-4 PLUS 2009/10 specials, Moffat pt1 5-7 plus 50th and specials, Moffat pt 2 8-10 plus specials, chibnall 11-12 plus flux and specials.

    • James

      August 22nd, 2023 - 11:46am

Jackson lake: so just each series as box sets like what’s already out now just in the style of Lees artwork? I’d rather they did Era sets with his artwork.

    • Jackson Lake

      August 22nd, 2023 - 2:52pm

James: nooo, stuff like remastered eps (maybe omnibus episodes), coherent art between discs, fresh boxset art, new extras (maybe include School Reunion / K9 & Company), commentaries etc.

Plus the Farewell Sarah Jane lockdown minisode (maybe re-filmed like a proper minisode), and something that outlines the unmade S5 stories. There’s a lot of potential here.

Obviously behind the sofa for sarah Jane adventures and some in conversation with the the cast!! Would be amazing, plus the ten audio book/plays ,
Sarah Jane alien files, comics from online games, story of the programme itself, also could feature small featurettes of stories containing a doctor who thing using already existing special features with new stuff say for the brig or tennant or sontarans – lots of blue Peter and bbc trailers and news things too!

Think I’m going to wait till next year for it. Got a feeling more stuff is to be announced for November/December time. I’ve already got the underwater menace and Babylon 5 blu rays on order. Maybe another collection set and that rumoured smugglers animation could turn into an expensive time. Blackadder on blu ray is rumoured to be out then too. Add on Christmas presents it’s just too much

B5 I’m really looking forward to. Finally give me a reason to finally see it despite owning the dvds for years. Was going to earlier this year but then I heard the rumour of the blu ray release so held off. Got the road home animated release as a birthday present so I definitely have to get the box set.

I don’t know when exactly blackadder is out but I do know it’s definitely in the works . Richard Curtis said in an interview earlier this year it was in the works. Also heard it was the same team that put out the excellent young ones and only fools blu ray sets out so they should be good. Going by previous releases of this team they normally put stuff out in November and it’s the run up to Christmas so November/December seems right for it. It was originally mooted as a potential summer release in time for the 40th but it obviously got pushed back

      @ Anon…

The OFaH blu-ray set is made up of five of the 80’s specials, not the whole series.

An yes, they are all uncut – restoring the cut scene in “Jolly Boys Outing” and the original transmitted “Royal Flush” – available for the first time.

I was hoping they would do more – but, as of now, this doesn’t seem to the case.

      What? What? What?

B5 is one of the best series ever made, with some of the most compelling and complex characters ever. A lot of people were put off by the CGI effects, but as Who fans we all know to look beyond the FX.

Watch it. Binge it. Quote it forevermore.

That’s very unlikely to ever happen due to the enormous clearance costs for the music involved.

      August 19th, 2023 - 12:09pm

Surely they could just change the music. Lots of shows do that for the actual episodes on DVD and are usually fine. This would be for special features so I don’t think people would be too heart broken by the change

    • Gordon

      August 19th, 2023 - 12:43pm

That’s all well and good for a show that only needs a few pieces of music that replaced. For doctor who confidential it has 100s of pieces of music that needs replacing. The cost of hiring someone to find replacements and implementing it all is probably cost prohibitive

    • MJS

      August 22nd, 2023 - 7:45am

It has always surprised me that they didn’t secure release rights for the Confidentials at the time they were made. I suppose they had no idea how popular they’d become. It makes me glad I recorded them off the telly first time around

    • James

      August 22nd, 2023 - 11:49am

MJS: I did the same. How did they broadcast it but not be able to release it? Could they not release it with with new music which they are allowed to or generic sci-fi music?

In what way is this “upscaled”? The clips in the trailer all look to be in standard definition. It would be different if it were shot on film but it was all recorded (bar the specials) in SD. It all just looks to be resized to fit 1080p.

      August 20th, 2023 - 1:36am

That’s what upscaling is. But there are different ways of upscaling, some better than others. In theory this set will look significantly better than letting your HD telly upscale the DVDs in real time. Improved upscaling software should give an improvement in sharpness and detail over the previous upscaled BD set.

This set doesn’t rule it out. Saw a comment today by Richard bignell. “The new series was never part of the Collection remit and we probably have another 4-5 years to go to complete what we’re doing with the original series, so even if it was considered, you’d be looking at around 2028 before that would get underway. Lots of time to pass between the two”

I imagine the following boxsets (if made) would be a Series 5-10 boxset, and a Series 11-13 boxset.

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any mastering issues with either Moffat or Chibnall eras, except for returning missing items such as the “next times” from some of the Matt Smith stories, and just generally including as much extras from both eras as possible into a neat all-in-one boxset for each.

That’s just a guess, but if true, total genius of them to finally do it, for so many reasons.

There’s no need, they’re already all available in full HD blu ray and we’re filmed as such. Series 1-4 and up to The Next Doctor were all filmed in standard, hence the need to upscale them for blu ray. There’s nothing to do for any episodes beyond that as they’re already covered.

      August 17th, 2023 - 7:38pm

Probably depends how well this sells. They could do Series 5 to 10, then 11 to 13 making it more of an Era set.

    • Samuel

      August 17th, 2023 - 11:12pm

@Moodbeam – It’s a perfect way to have 3x boxsets for all three eras of New Who, if it were to happen. Would be a very nice, tidy, manageable way for new fans to be able to get on board and collect them.

This S1-4+specials remastered pre order alone is an incredibly sound price – I make that roughly £10ish per series, as opposed to the classic who standard collection sets (1 set per season) that only get as low as £20 on an Amazon prime Christmas holiday sale for about 1 week or so of the entire year.

      As I said earlier, there are inconsistencies with the Blu Rays of Series 5 and beyond. I’ll list a few below, but for more accurate info I recommend The Millennium Effect’s website;

S5 og BR – all eps missing “coming soon”

S5 og BR – animated BBC logo over title sequences

S5 2020 SB – Vincent and The Doctor slowed down and pitch corrected (og BR had a very bad sound mix)

S5 2020 SB – The Eleventh Hour uses the wrong logo after its “coming soon”

S6 og BR – Numerous video audio faults throughout

S5-10 BR – Numerous extras and special features were not included on the boxsets, as listed in mini spreadsheets on the Millennium effect website.

    Regarding image quality of this Youtube Trailer;

Both the Iplayer and first DVD copies are clearer than whatever stock was used for Youtube.

Wheras if you compare studio footage of Classic Who from DVD to Blu Ray, it is very much cleaner, with evidentally all the DVD compression pixels as good as gone.

“Newly Upscaled”, if taken literally, surely must mean this cannot be the stock from 2013, obviously because that was a decade ago and the BBC wouldn’t be so utterly silly to re-use that stock, given the crazy amount of errors and compromises at the time…right?….right?!

In all seriousness, as long as this turns out fine, as a set, this is exactly what I’ve been wishing for to be released this Year of all Years.

If, and only if, this is legit, and decent, remains faithful to the DVDs, with all the full benefits of Blu Ray as good as can be with SD footage (excuse my excited paranoia) along with “looking back” features with flipping David and RTD together!! That a few were saying online would “never ever happen because only The Collection will do it” –

Awh.. I’m being careful, but I’m already feeling so, so happy about this announcement today.

    Bravo!!

How much of an improvement will this be compared to the current Blu-ray sets?
I’d like to wait it out to see the final product.

Happy it’s happening but gonna be cautious

Great news, going to preorder this!
Hope everyone’s saving their pennies for all the releases for the remainder of the year!
Been very quiet until season 20 announcement, then underwater menace, new toys yesterday and now this! What’s next?!

Will they finally fix the errors of the previous sets? I would hope so, but… (I’d also hope for 50i, along with the moon on a stick.)

For ref, those errors include early edits of CiN, Next Doctor; alt edit of a late S1 ep; iffy S1 sound mixes; different credit sequences, etc. (Just use the tx masters, Auntie!)

Does this include doctor who confidential full episodes. The ones I’ve got had cut down versions.

Only one new extra is included, as per Amazon, so no – and the clearances would be expensive for a worldwide release.

The listing states it contains existing bonus features and 1 new extra so probably the same versions as the previous dvd sets.

Skimmed over this when I saw it just now as I do with most of these DVD releases but actually this is really epic! I remember RTD saying years ago that they’d never do this because it wouldn’t look good, which I, and many others that knows about upscaling, knew was utter tosh. Glad he’s come to his senses and to have his entire era, pretty much, upscaled and released is FANTASTIC!!!!

That being said, it might just be the 1080p YouTube quality but I feel like they don’t look as high quality in the trailer as they could do, but I’m nitpicking as usual LOL.

What did you think of the original upscales, from the 50th anniversary (24P slowdown aside)?

He presumably said that more than 10 years ago because they already upscales for Blu-ray and 1-4 have been available on Blu-ray for years.

Fantastic. Maybe could do these instead of the collection for each season. 9and 10, 11th doc 3 series plus Xmas specials/50th, 12 doc 3 series plus Xmas specials, 13 Doc 3 series/flux plus specials. Can’t see much more needing as its bluray, upacaled, got all the extras from all the boxsets already. Saying that need behind the sofa watchalongs

Will this include the infinite quest and dreamland?

Not sure. Says 60 episodes. 1-4 had 14 each (including Xmas), then the 4 in 2009/2010. Maybe as extras they will be included. Will pudseys cutaway, Proms ep, Graske Xmas extra be added as extras along with the 2 10th Doc animations.

Very excited for this set! Decent price too! That trailer was brilliant as well!
