BBC Studios announces Season 23 as the next installment in the DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION Blu-ray range

BBC Studios continues to offer Doctor Who fans the opportunity to build their own home archive on Blu-ray. The first jam-packed release for Colin Baker’s Sixth Doctor, Doctor Who: The Collection – Season 23, debuts on 7th October 2019 (Revised from 23rd September.)

In 1985, Doctor Who was taken off the air for an 18 month hiatus. When it returned, it was with an ambitious fourteen-episode adventure, The Trial of a Time Lord. The epic story saw the Doctor on trial for his life, with the court examining his adventures with companion Peri (Nicola Bryant) and looking to his future escapades with new companion Melanie (Bonnie Langford).

This season saw the return of popular villain Sil, along with the Master, the towering robot Drathro and the plant-based Vervoid monsters. With the Inquisitor (Lynda Bellingham) overseeing the proceedings, it was the Valeyard (Michael Jayston) who proved the greatest threat, hiding his own sinister motives for wanting the Doctor’s downfall.

With all episodes newly remastered from the best available sources, this Blu-ray box set also contains extensive and exclusive special features which include:

  • Extended edits – of all fourteen episodes
  • Terror of the Vervoids – four-part standalone edition with updated Fx
  • Immersive 5.1 surround sound & isolated scores – on all 14 broadcast episodes
  • Behind the Sofa – new episodes with Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant, Bonnie Langford, Mark Strickson, Frazer Hines and Matthew Waterhouse
  • The Writers’ Room – Eric Saward, Philip Martin, Christopher H Bidmead & Waly K Daly discuss the ‘Lost’ Season 23
  • The Doctor Who Cookbook Revisited – brave cast members tackle their original recipes from the 1980s official cookbook
  • The Doctor’s Table – join Colin Baker and friends for dinner
  • In Conversation – Matthew Sweet chats to companion Bonnie Langford
  • Unseen studio footage
  • Rare archive treats
  • Convention footage
  • Blu-ray trailer
  • HD photo galleries
  • Scripts, costume designs & more in the PDF Archive

The six-disc box set also includes hours of extensive special features previously released on DVD.

DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION – SEASON 23 stars Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant and Bonnie Langford with Michael Jayston and Lynda Bellingham. Guest appearances include Anthony Ainley, Nalbil Shaban, Joan Sims, Christopher Ryan, Michael Craig, Honor Blackman, Tony Selby and Geoffrey Hughes.

The pertwee era would have been the worst place to start. Seasons 7 and 8 needs a lot of work. Mixing up the sets means each doctor gets a turn and every doctor gets a chance to shine. Every era has its fans. Having 7 toms in a row would have potentially caused fatigue especially as it would be over the period of 2 years. Mixing it up keeps things fresh. If we had waited to do season 26 last then we never would have had Nicholas parsons for the curse of fenric making of.

Has anyone had issues with the Digi stak sliding off the cardboard?

My season 23 kept sliding left and right and had to use super glue to keep it in place. Season 19 started sliding and had to do same though I damage the too of image when I fixed up season 19.

Its minor, but wondering if others had any issues

Yes, this has happened to my Season 12 boxset, the glue has come loose and the digi stak has fallen out. Haven’t glued mine back in though. Its my only gripe with these new boxsets. Making them limited edition, but then only using cardboard packaging, doesn’t make them feel premium imo.

Love the artwork, booklet and, of course, the content, plus the video/sound has never looked so good, so no complaints there. I’ve just never been a fan of the packaging from day one. It’s still just cardboard at the end of the day.

Ideally would have loved these to be released in a steelbook/tin, but that would have driven the price up a fair bit.

They are all around 6 disc sets, so you could always buy 6 disc Blu-ray cases, and put the Blu case inside the Collector’s box using custom slip:)

My copy arrived Monday….and ; it doesn’t disappoint ! Absolutely brilliant box set. I am a particular fan of the special edition version of “Terror of the Vervoids”; amazing and thoroughly enjoyable. Admittedly I was initially not sure about the new shots of the Hyperion III until I realised all the external “space” shots were animation – produced by the same team behind the missing story animations. Once you realise this any disappointment vanishes and the entire story in this format is thoroughly enjoyable. Then to also have the standard transmitted version AND a third version based on the 71Edits (an extended edition directors cut) plus the highlights googlebox style with the absolutely brilliant “Behind the Sofa”. Fantastic.
As more sets are released and the standards and consistency of the special features becomes apparent I just find my enjoyment and anticipation for these sets growing. Thank you bbc studios. I ; like the majority of hard core fans and collectors also have all the dvds already. However; I can honestly say that in my opinion these sets really are a step up and an improvement. I thoroughly recommend them and genuinely believe they are well worth the extra investment even for those who already have all the dvds. Myself?….. I’m an OCD hard core collector of doctor who dvds and blu rays and would have purchased them anyway; but they are quickly becoming a favourite and a must buy. Don’t miss out though. Preordering is almost an essential requirement ; what with the speed that they are beginning to sell out.

Finally got mine from Zavvi today. Not too badly damaged…
But very happy with 5.1 sound! I noticed that some of the court sequences have the same ambient background noise from the Doctor’s trial in The War Games, which I thought was a very nice touch.

We need to band together and somehow get it to bbc studios that a season 12 re-release would be great. Anyone now how to go about it? Or think it would work?

I’d be up for that. Missed out and can’t afford to pay for those insane prices. Don’t know how to go about it though.

Nice idea! Won’t happen anytime soon though. Even the more recently released sets are living up to the “limited edition” tag. Unfortunately, you get used to things being described as limited edition that actually end up dropping in price, with loads on the shelf 12 months later.
They actually got the supply and demand rule about right this time; always leave them wanting more!

People on here have tried many times sending emails in. I did too before caving in and buying my s12 off eBay.

Pretty much told there are no plans to re-release it. Or any of the others in the limited edition packaging.

I expect complete Doctor sets to come once the range is finished. Unless streaming is the only option from 2024.

It has already been confirmed by the BBC that these “LIMITED EDITION” box sets are to be the last physical media releases that they will do.
After this run, everything will be streaming and download only. That’s the way the world is moving I’m afraid.

That’s interesting. Will they be released in exactly the same packaging? If so, that’ll certainly bring the prices down on eBay! Haha

I’ve just finished watching the extended cut of ‘Trial’ today. All in all, not bad I thought. Whilst the added scenes don’t necessarily add much to the plot, they do improve the pacing in certain sections, such as for ‘The Ultimate Foe’, as we get a bit more tension in the courtyard scenes.

I still think though that the Blu-Ray producers should have attempted standalone versions of ‘The Mysterious Planet’ and ‘Mindwarp’, as they could have been watched as prequels to the extended ‘Trial’ story, which would then be followed by the simply brilliant standalone cut of ‘Terror of the Vervoids’.
