I’m normally very positive about new who but I have to admit I’m struggling with this series. I’ve ordered it but I’m not even sure I’ll go through with buying it. I feel sad about it and I enjoyed the last series after a shaky start but this one is harder work. As it may be the last series I’ll probably get it. I hope if it continues Russell rethinks the whole gods thing. Oh and if you wre enjoying the series that’s absolutely fine with me.

I think on reflection I will get the series. I hope I’ll enjoy it more on a rewatch.

I’ve enjoyed it on the most part. First 5 eps I was thrilled with it. Last 2 weeks I’ve enjoyed watching them but script wise I thought needed a lot more work. Last nights ep especially was a mess for casual audiences I feel. Don’t want to be negative but I do feel that It’s maybe time for Russell to go after he does s3 and 4 to wrap up his gods arc or at least take a step back from scripting.

That’s how I feel Gordon. There are elements of the episodes I liked. But I think the scripts and stories need work, saving all of the audience in the song contest just felt like a let down. I do feel as well a return to story ofvtge week with no links would be better. You can still have a spectacular finale to a series but it doesn’t need to linked through an entire doctor’s era. Just tell a good story. I probably will enjoy these more when I watch them again but as strange as it may seem I do think a hiatus might not be a bad thing. Bringing in more writers and lower the story arcs would be a start.

Well it’s interesting that Paul Mount in his video of last night’s episode, likened the the situation to the late eighties. Back then the series was held in open comtept by the BBC. Which is not the case now. But just as the last two series of the eighties was better than the pervious few ,this recent series has been the best series in years it is probably too late. I think the series would benefit from a good rest and rethink. Let’s hope the series goes out on a high . What is good is we can have a balanced debate on this site.

      May 26th, 2025 - 6:35am

Let’s no forget it’s BBC’s biggest money spinner by a large margin. I don’t think any rest will happen until that no longer becomes the case.

Honestly I don’t think resting is the answer. There is no guarantee of a comeback in 5 or so years or if anybody will want to do it then. Even then there is no guarantee it will be a success. 2005 who it was very extremely lucky that it was the success it was. If it wasn’t a success do we rest it again? If rtd does the next 2 seasons like i’m expecting him to it will take him up to 65. Pretty much seems about the right age to pop off and retire.

As for who is next I’d like to see Pete mctighe give it a go without rtd and chibnell being in charge. His collection trailers have been brilliant and lucky day was great I thought. I can’t help but feel war between is essentially his big test to see if he can handle the job. He’s by far had the most showrunner experience of the 4 guest writers this season.

I know some have said JMS as he’s now in the uk but as much as i like b5 he’d be near enough in his mid 70s by the time his first ep made air.

I don’t think it’s gonna be Mark Gattis or Toby Whitehouse or any of those names from about a decade ago that were name dropped as potential show runners. Personally if those were wanted to run who would have gottten it by now

    • Bookcollector

      May 26th, 2025 - 9:58am

When I say a rest I mean a short one, reports say it may be 2027 before a new series could be in the can and that is the break I mean. Just a chance to rethink the approach. I do think Russell should step back and let someone else take over. Pete Mctighe is a decent shout Gordon.

    • Gordon

      May 26th, 2025 - 10:17am

I wouldn’t even call it a rest if it was 2027. Considering they are still at the script stage for the next season and If they got everything ready to start filming this November/december it wouldn’t be ready until early 2027 regardless. At the absolute latest they would have to start for a 2027 release would be round about this time next year if they wanted it in the autumn

    • Prof Horner

      May 26th, 2025 - 12:32pm

Well it’s a far cry from the days when the last episode of The War Games eas recorded just over a week before transmission.

    • Bookcollector

      May 26th, 2025 - 3:45pm

To be honest Gordon I do feel a proper break may be in order, time to rethink the direction of the show but until Daviies relinquishes the reins I don’t think we will see any major change.

The article I read about the BBC continuing mentioned RTD being contracted for five years. Assuming that they mean five seasons, he’d still have another two to deliver so it doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere until after 2028.

I agree with others here, that RTD could stand to step back a bit from scripting and have more episodes written by others, so that he can focus more on polishing the scripts that come in.

I find it unusual how these Disney Who Seasons aren’t being released in 4K HDR considering that is what they are offering via streaming.

Personally I would be perfectly happy for Doctor Who to return to HD SDR – I’d love to see grading reassemble ‘The Empty Child’. Something harsher, gritty, grounded, sketchy.

I think it’s looking more and more unlikely. Especially with the news that a new series will be made with or without disney but be in 2027. Can’t see ncuti wanting to lose potential work if he is still linked to who. I’d like a third series from him but we will see what happens in the finale. I suspect a regeneration.

    • James

      May 17th, 2025 - 9:06pm

**** returns for finale. 2 ****** vs 2 ******. Then 15 regenerates. Leaving a cliffhanger with 16 being revealed xmas 2025. Still time to film a Christmas special for this year. If not definitely 2026 Christmas Special Doc 16 story. Happened when 9 regenerated into 10, his forst story was Christmas special.

    • Gordon

      May 17th, 2025 - 11:29pm

If he did he’d pretty much be tied to the show till 2028 including promotion and considering how in demand I hear he has become it’s not too much of a surprise if he has chosen to go. No matter how much he loves doing it some of those offers will be tempting and may not be around in 3 years.

Rumour has it they have their 16th doctor. I have heard who they supposedly have but am not naming any names.

What people forget to realise post production is far more time consuming than it used to be. It’s possible we might get something for Christmas but the turn around time will be very tight and they need to ideally be starting now or by the end of July/august by the latest

    • Missyrules

      May 18th, 2025 - 12:57am

Don’t think there will be a Christmas special 2025, I hope there is but if the series is being talked about for 2027 then I think 2026 christmas special will be the next episode after reality war.

    • James

      May 18th, 2025 - 1:24pm

If no Christmas special 2025 will, the War Between the Land and the Sea spin-off be pushed back to spring 2026 to fill a gap in Doctor Who slots? RTD said they’d be no gaps when he returned so this would make sense.
Then a Christmas special for 2026 for Doc 16 full episode filmed early 2026 along side season 3 for transmission spring 2027.
Maybe get a minisode for Christmas 2025 similar to Pudseys Cutaway minisode we got between Parting of the Ways finale and The Christmas Invasion.

Only thing I’m confused about if the fourth wall barrier Mrs Flood did a couple of times.
RTD today has said about the Unholy Trinity which is Conrad, *****, but mrs Flood doesn’t count and another character will be in the finale. Moneys on a new ******** (from the tooth).
Plus does this also mean the Meeps boss is Mrs Flood/*****?

    • MDS

      May 18th, 2025 - 2:13pm

If the next season is delayed could a change in transmission dates be considered. The low ratings for season 2 shows the programme suffers by being released early on I-Player. If the weather is nice as has been the case this year why watch in the evening when you can watch anytime.

if the series could be broadcast between January and March with no early I-Player release it would become appointment TV again. Also how much better would “The Well” have been if it was dark outside instead of bright sunshine coming through the windows.

The Pertwee years (mainly the early stories) and the Peter Davison seasons got good early viewing figures when broadcast in the early months. If Disney stayed onboard for the world distribution each episode could be a worldwide release just without the cinema showings which seems to be the plan for this seasons finale,

We would then get a Christmas Day Special followed by a New Years Day start of season and a further 7 episodes to follow. Merchandise could then be planned for a February release.

Lot of what ifs but who knows. If we don’t suggest things then they are not heard. At the end of the day this is just my opinion.

    • Rory

      May 19th, 2025 - 10:03am

MDS, I suspect the BBC don’t care too much if people are viewing it on iPlayer or on broadcast, as they’re getting the viewers either way.

      May 23rd, 2025 - 4:37pm

Richard, On the Front page of the Sun Newspaper Today, the Main News is Dr who is Cancelled And the 15 th Doctor has been Sacked. (It doesn’t say he Quit of didn’t want to do anymore Storys, it just says he was Sacked)?

    • Missyrules

      May 24th, 2025 - 1:39pm

The sun of course is well known for never publishing anything that isn’t true… take it with a pinch of salt.

    • Gordon

      May 25th, 2025 - 10:21am

I would like it pointed out it’s the same sun reporter that posted an article 2 months ago that said he quit and the already shot the regeneration. It can’t be both. Quitting is far more likely of the 2. The bbc have went on to vehemently deny he’s been axed.

The sun tried to say him stepping away from Eurovision at the last minute was the last straw for bbc bosses and the ending will be reshot but considering you would need to write schedule shooting and do all the post production on it in the space of 2 weeks that is extremely unlikely

The pricing of these is starting to get out of hand. We get far fewer episodes but pay much more. And where is Joy to the World? Do they really expect us to have a regular blu-ray in the middle of the collection? Urgh, I get more disappointed each year.

At least the animations and the Collection sets are still good value.

I stuck the discs into what seemed like the relevant series either side. Would rather not have to do the same again here, they know this is a common complaint with every new series and many times in the past they’ve reversed it and added it on. Not convinced this time though.

    • Amypondfan

      March 28th, 2025 - 2:19pm

For people complaining about the price of £59.99 please remember that the retail for this is £89.99 which is what it is being sold for by some shops. The average film release for bluray is £14.99-17.99 for a single release so potentially 6-7 discs again for £59.99 is still good value.

    • Missyrules

      March 28th, 2025 - 2:20pm

    • MJTimeLord

      March 28th, 2025 - 2:47pm

AnyPondFan – no legitimate retailer will be selling this for £89.99 – not even eBay scalpers will be doing that. I’m not sure where you get an RRP of that amount from ??

    • Amypondfan

      March 28th, 2025 - 3:13pm

MJ the retail prices are higher than Amazon sells at. So on galaxy 4 website the season 7 bluray is listed as

Doctor Who The Collection Season 7 (Limited Edition Blu-Ray)
      Regular Price
      £84.99
      Sale Price
      £69.99

Retail prices are regularly higher than most shops sell for

    • Amypondfan

      March 28th, 2025 - 4:26pm

MJ the recommended retail price of the season 7 bluray is £89.99 but hardly anyone sells it at that. It’s the same for this.

    • Gordon

      March 28th, 2025 - 7:17pm

It’s the same price as the season one steelbook last year. If you think it’s too expensive wait. I’m sure it will go down in price at some point.

Tbh season one has gone up too 69.99 now and its not been a year since the release so in fairness leaving this too long till the following year will see it eventually go up i know its more better if after its came out too wait till black friday sales in November then season two price will drop
