Doctor Who Magazine Special Edition Production Design

The Doctor Who Magazine Special Editions return with a lavish new issue devoted to the series’ production design.

Production designers are some of the unsung heroes of Doctor Who, bringing outlandish script concepts to life and recreating historical settings for one of the BBC’s most demanding productions. Initially responsible for creating alien creatures as well as bizarre planets and other exotic destinations, designers have played a central role in the series’ production since it began in 1963. This richly illustrated Special Edition examines the production designer’s craft in unprecedented detail. Exclusive interviews and rarely seen images provide a fascinating insight into the artistry behind a television legend. Highlights include numerous rare images and exclusive interviews with the key players, including:

  • Jeremy Bear (The Mutants)
  • Nigel Curzon (Terror of the Zygons)
  • Arwel Wyn Jones (production designer on the 2018 series)
  • Michael Pickwoad (production designer on the 2010-17 series)
  • Jon Pusey (The Pirate Planet)
  • Stephen Scott (Mawdryn Undead)
  • Dafydd Shurmer (production designer from the 2020 series)
  • Edward Thomas (production designer on the 2005-10 series)
  • Tom Yardley-Jones (The Leisure Hive)

Other highlights include:

  • Features on the design of Doctor Who in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s
  • Bill Constable’s previously unpublished designs for the 1965 movie Dr. Who and the Daleks
  • Barry Newbery’s designs for The Aztecs
  • Recreating sets for The Evil of the Daleks with its designer, Chris Thompson

Doctor Who Magazine Special Edition 55: Production Design is sale at WH Smith, selected supermarkets and online from store.panini.co.uk from Wednesday 30 September 2020 priced £6.99. It’s also available as a digital edition, priced £5.99

Any subscribers got their copy yet? Mine hasn’t turned up yet. Only subscribed at the start of the lockdown and all regular issues have turned up fine, just wondering if there’s a bit of a delay. Saw the issue in WHSmith yesterday and it looks a great read

Yes received mine on 1st October and like yourself took out the special lockdown subscription offer back in March which included the current issue rather than wait until the following month which is the usual policy + 3 special editions.

Ask them to order you a copy. All main shops have a magazine ordering service account. It’s the Doctor Who Special, issue 55. Just checked and it can be ordered.

Even pre pandemic these Special Editions were always difficult to track down in my neck of the woods (other than online when there would invariably be postage to include in the price too). One of the subscriptions that includes the Special Editions avoids this problem!

Great stuff, am looking forward to reading this. Concept art fascinates me and how it’s realised on screen. The bottom right image particularly intrigues me as I’m guessing it’s concept art for the War Doctor’s TARDIS console room. It’s my favourite of the show, and I appreciate it’s cobbled together, but there’s never been much information about it out there. Certainly not the coverage you’d get for a fully fledged new console room.

Very nice! I hope there’s a good balance of old and new designs. It’s fascinating to see the process of concept, development through to execution!

Speaking of designs, I’ve always wanted to see a large format high quality book on the designs from ‘Who’. June Hudson’s work alone is deserving of a book!

In the meantime looking forward to this very much.

Bryan, it’s the ‘regular’ Specials range (I know, a contradiction in terms in my part LOL) and not the £9.99 MagBook line. It’s £6.99 this time.
