October 12th, 2024 - 4:05pmIn terms of the spine of the book. Yes its faulty. It has a ripple effect on it, like the book has been read and the spine creased or cracked open. But the spine isn’t actually damaged. It’s not cracked as the book doesn’t fall open at the ripples. It’s a printing issue not a damage issue.

October 12th, 2024 - 5:45pmEither way, I would not have bought this if I had known the book was an abridged version. Strange that they did not mention this in any of the Preview materials? Plus the fact that the book has a bad printing error, which doesn’t look great on Doctor Who Magazine for these faults. Next time something looks good, I’ll wait for the magazine to come out & check it’s reviews before purchasing!

October 12th, 2024 - 8:59pmIt’s not an abridged version. It’s an alternative version in the same way pirate planet target is different to the full novel. Pirate has rewritten sequences as does evil.

October 12th, 2024 - 2:54pmFinished the new evil book, and it is a new book. It’s the opposite of the city and pirate target paperbacks. They changed the novels into more screen accurate target books. Here the original novel is screen accurate and the target book takes the approach of changing it into a tighter plot. My issue with the evil TV story (which I love) has always been the opening episodes being to convulted to actually make sense, the plot to lure the doctor to the shop is so unnecessary and then in the 1866 sequences the terril character adds nothing to the plot. This version drops the opening episode nearly completely and removes, terrill and by default ruth maxtible and toby. Its interesting to see none of that makes any difference to the story it flows perfectly well without it.

October 12th, 2024 - 10:56amDid anyone else complete the survey? I said it should revert to standard price around £5. Any extras/ “freebies” have a form inside the magazine to fill in and send away for as not everyone wants them .(diarama and posters). This month came with the book for £3 extra. Could have had a coupon inside to use in stores if it was to be general sale. Sfx used to do this where you could get a book a few quid or half price if you presented the voucher in whs stores.

October 12th, 2024 - 2:48pmJames the magazine will never go back to that price. Printing costs mean it just can’t. Everything costs more to produce now. Most magazines are around the £7.99-8.99 such as empire and total film. I remember paying £0.95 for the target books but times change and we can’t expect to pay the same prices we paid 5 years ago for the magazine.

The first non-Davies new era Doctor cover for well over a year – July 2023 to be precise with Eccleston – or to go genuinely non RT-D era, May 2023 with Hartnell and Troughton.

October 10th, 2024 - 12:02pmSo to answer the question… it’s not the full version of the hardback novel. The interludes are gone between the episodes with only the first and last included. It’s been altered to have chapters instead of the individual episodes as one chapter each. I’m a bit annoyed, if they are going to do this include the full novel! Does this mean a future general release will return to the original novel? I’m pleased with book in terms of its look but the other issue is the spine of my copy is damaged. I cant afford to buy another one so that’s annoying too. Why didn’t they just release a full version as a target book in stores? Seems pointless to me to release an edited version!

October 10th, 2024 - 1:12pmThats a real shame that it is not the full version of the excellent novel, they just had to mess about with it didnt they! I dont think ill bother now and just stick with my original version. The interludes made it different and unique from the John Peel version and out the two I much preferred Hines novel it was a joy to read.
Saved me some money then as from last issue onwards I decided to stop buying the magazine I would have had to make an exception for this one.

The novel will still be good as the adaptation was excellent but the interludes just added that little something to it to differentiate it from the peel book. If they announce an official shop bought version it will be a case of waiting to see it in a shop to see which version it is. I’ll read this new one but will stick with the hardcover for future reads.

October 10th, 2024 - 4:02pmCity and pirate were but this one didn’t need editing down. Actually city would have fitted into the target format without editing either. Shada hasn’t been given the target treatment yet and considering the controversy surrounding the author now I don’t know if it will be done. I’d like it to done but who knows. Now I know the ripple effect on the spine is a production issue I’ll not worry about it. Perfect condition would be ideal but I’m not going to hunt one out. As you say MJS these have been traditionally edited and that’s fine, this will be good but it is annoying even so! Just print the full book as a target book. Does it matter if its thicker than the others?

October 10th, 2024 - 4:45pm@MJS, City and Pirate were both edited down for the Target release. Shada has never had a Target and likely never will I wouldn’t be surprised if this gets an unabridged paperback with the original cover, same as the other hardbacks (including Drosten’s Curse, etc.).

October 10th, 2024 - 5:01pmResurrection and Revelation of the Daleks were not edited when in thier Target format. I could be wrong but when I read the Target versions they seemed pretty much the same as the original hardbacks.

Mine came this Morning. The Cover you see in Promo Photos is a Cardboard SlipCover, While the actual Magazine inside as no Writing on it at all. Abit like the Subscriber Edition of the Normal Magazine.
