Doctor Who Magazine Issue 584

David Tennant is the Fourteenth Doctor… and although it will be a year until we see his TV adventures, the story continues in Doctor Who Magazine issue 584.

An epic new comic-strip adventure, written by Alan Barnes and illustrated by Lee Sullivan, picks up directly where The Power of the Doctor left off.

Editor Marcus Hearn says, “Russell T Davies, our new showrunner, has long admired the DWM strip. And that’s why he’s granted us the honour of telling the Fourteenth Doctor’s first story in an adventure that dovetails with the most recent episode. For the first time in our 43-year history, the strip is now in lockstep with the television series’ continuity.”

Russell T Davies says, “From day one, I wanted to increase ties between the show and the magazine. I love it when we’re in sync! A lot of people will be thinking, David’s not the real Doctor, he’s a trick, an illusion, a flashback. But no. He’s real. And DWM can help us underline that.”

Other highlights of the new issue include:

  • Meet the New Team – the producers, directors and other crew members of Doctor Who tell us what they’re looking forward to in the 2023 Specials and beyond.
  • Letter from the Showrunner – in the first of his new regular columns, Russell T Davies reveals what brought him back to Doctor Who.
  • Production Diary – script editor Scott Handcock provides exclusive updates about forthcoming episodes, direct from Doctor Who’s HQ.
  • Reach up for the Sunrise – David Tennant, Russell T Davies, former showrunner Chris Chibnall, directors Rachel Talalay and Jamie Magnus Stone, and CG artist Ben Pickles describe shooting The Power of the Doctor’s regeneration sequence.
  • The Strip of a Lifetime – Russell T Davies, Scott Handcock, Alan Barnes and Lee Sullivan on creating the Fourteenth Doctor’s first adventure.
  • The Watchers – fans who were lucky enough to be granted studio visits in the 1960s and early 70s recall the thrill of watching Doctor Who being made.
  • Hack to the Future – an interview with artist Robert Hack about the new illustrated version of David Whitaker’s seminal novel Doctor Who and the Daleks.
  • Collectivity: The TARDIS – meet the fans for whom collecting police-box merchandise has been a lifelong passion.
  • Factory Records – the sets of 1966’s The Power of the Daleks are recreated, providing new insights into this mostly missing story.
  • The Fact of Fiction encounters Cybermen and Daleks as it looks back at 2006’s Army of Ghosts.
  • Other Worlds – an essential guide to forthcoming stories in the expanded Doctor Who universe.
  • Previews, reviews, news, prize-winning competitions, Time and Space Visualiser, Sufficient Data and more.

Doctor Who Magazine Issue 584 is on sale Thursday 10 November from www.panini.co.uk and WH Smith priced £6.99 (UK).

In reference to the ebay copy which is currently over £70, that is mine and as normal, i read the issue then list on ebay with bids commencing at £5 plus postage. I do it every month. I was unaware of these distribution problem until today, and i am not taking advantage of the situation in any way. I would kindly ask , if anyone here, is responsible for the nasty messages i have received to please stop this. I have also approached the highest bidders to ask are they serious and i would rather they retract their bids if they are not serious and are just being malicious. So to surmise, i am surprised by what has happened but i am a genuine fan and not trying to rip off others.

Hiya you shouldnt feel bad as you have been helping those who cant get to thier local shops to get thier magazine through the post, especially when it sells out fast on the Panini website, and anyone who bids MUST pay that is part of the rules. They have control over thier bids no matter the item.

In fact ebay is a funny beast, for the first time ever, I bought two Eaglemoss companion packs from B and M to sell on as just over cost price (cover my petrol and packaging costs) and they havent shifted at all. Im not trying to make a profit just helping.

They had two issues of the latest DWM in the ASDA at Poole yesterday, but none in WH Smith. I was going to buy them but didnt in the end, rather leave them for someone who needs them. I think an ebay scalper has already paid a visit to WH Smiths as there were no 1973 mags either.

It amazes me the people don’t understand that it’s the bidders themselves who are raising the price, not you. If you set the price to £70 buy it now, then I can understand peoples concerns. (Still not enough to warrant horrible messages, it’s your choice and they don’t have to buy).
So don’t worry, it just silly people making drama for the sake of drama.

@judooning once had someone on eBay complain at me that the rare item I was selling (and had multiple bids increasing the price) could be found for half the price elsewhere, so they’d offer to buy it for that price.

Me: In that case I’d suggest you take up the other offer and buy it from them.

The word from major branches of WH Smith’s (who never received it in the first place) is they’re unable to order it in. This is turning into a major distribution disaster particularly for such a hyped and crucial relaunch issue. If it really is Sold Out, having never reached half the country, then Panini and the distributors have questions to answer.

According the Radio Times (reading from DWM I believe): “When Russell [T Davies] ran Doctor Who for five years in the 2000s, he turned it into a huge critical and commercial success. He’s returning with some big, bold, next-level plans, kicking off in November 2023 with three special episodes – hour-long spectaculars – starring David’s Fourteenth Doctor, before Ncuti takes over as the Fifteenth, around the festive period.”

So, does this mean Tennant will be The Doctor for three specials in November AND THEN regenerates in a (presumably) Christmas Special?

Oh wait, nvm, I just realised I misread it. So yeah seems like Tennant will regenerate in the 60th I assume and then the festive special will be Ncuti’s first proper appearance.

I can’t help noticing that everyone who’s been able to actually find a copy of this issue is in the south of Englandish. Further north and it seems to be impossible to find. It wasn’t in the Sheffield Forbidden Planet although the 1973 special was. They’re rarer than hen’s teeth in the outside world so good to pick up a copy. As for issue 584, I’ve now traipsed around every WH Smith’s, ASDA, Tesco’s, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s as well as countless other small newsagents in my area. It’s not here. It’s never been here. Have you read RTD’s explanation for Fourteen’s clothes regenerating? Yes they did by the way. Because he didn’t want photos of Tennant wearing ‘women’s clothes’ to be weaponized by the media. Pathetic and cowardly if you ask me. The more i hear about these specials the more I think I might give them a miss.

To quote someone… “what! What!! WHAT!!!” I suppose that explains why Davies has failed to cast another woman in the role as well.

    • Anonymous

      November 11th, 2022 - 5:19pm

Well, you two sadly confirm one thing; at this point it seems the fandom is permanently fractured and will likely NEVER be reconciled under any circumstances. You’ve also been EXTREMELY selective as to quoting the – several – reasons RTD gave as to not forcing Tennant to begin his stint wearing Whittaker’s costume (which absolutely IS feminine, despite some people’s attempts to assert that it’s “gender neutral”).

Such negativity already, and we wonder why the franchise is in such a state.

    • Rex Farrel

      November 11th, 2022 - 5:51pm

I liked the regenerating clothes – aside from being just like the first regeneration, it also avoids faffing about with costume selection scenes (seen one, seen ’em all). It’s just a shame there was no one there to witness it, because it would have been a great opportunity to bait a certain type of fan: “I’ve regenerated every cell in my body, got a new face, have the ability to travel through time and space, and you’re asking how I changed my clothes?”

    • Anomie

      November 11th, 2022 - 6:28pm

If moffatt or chibnall had done this it would be blasted but apparently you are not allowed to criticise Davies… I’ve made no secret of my feelings for Davies writing and tennants acting. For me this is a massive backward step.

    • Doctor Stu

      November 11th, 2022 - 11:51pm

I’m sorry but Tennant looked iconic in that suit, Sacha looked completely bizarre and weird in Jodie’s clothes. Did we really want to see Tenant wearing womens clothes? They’re not gender neutral by any stretch of the imagination no matter how much people want to pretend they are.

As if it’s that big of an issue for people to turn off. Bit Fragile if not seeing a man wearing female clothes makes you never want to watch the show again

    • RPG74

      November 12th, 2022 - 12:21am

Amomie, I don’t think RTD objects to the idea of a female Doctor, he just didn’t cast one this time. But I think his explanation for the sudden regenerating clothing bit is horlicks, and snacks of hypocrisy. This is likely to be the wokest, trendiest series of NuWho ever (unfortunately, in the opinion of some of us), pushing orientation and gender neutral business left right and centre. But when it comes to a post-regeneration Doctor wearing the clothes of his female predecessor for all of thirty seconds of screen time, somebody-Tennant? Davies?-gets cold feet. I mean, come on people, at least have the courage of your convictions.

    • Daniel Seymour

      November 12th, 2022 - 7:20am

The change of clothes will be explained in the narrative of next years episodes from the rumoured villain that has influenced this regeneration. The Doctor seemed surprised his clothes changed at regeneration as well as his old body returning. It wasnt a ‘normal’ regeneration.

I have to admit to feeling very uncomfortable with the Disney deal. How much influence will the mighty Disney dollar impact the show and the thing which concerns me most is will we as fans be able to buy and physically own the Disney era episodes? I fear we won’t which will bring an end to 40 years of commercially available doctor who. Will this also mean a flood of spinoff shows?
I also have to question the logic of bringing Tennant back to boost the ratings as some people are saying. How will that work? Ratings could be boosted for one month in November 23 and then the ratings will probably drop off again. It’s a natural thing with a series that has been on air for so long now. For me it’s a backward step. Far better for ncuti to have stepped in straightaway than be sidelined for a year.
Don’t get me wrong I hope things will be fine and we still get those dvd/bluray releases but if we don’t… I and several friends have talked about this. The general consensus is no releases to own… no longer watching who. But you can stream them younger people say… yes you can. But as a long time who collector streaming is not owning.

I think the increased effects budget will not be a bad thing, in the style of the Star Wars show like Andor the effects are not overblown, just used to enhance worlds and settings. I thought the Power of the Doctor looked really good anyway, no bad effects and it was an amazing Who episode and on the BBC budget. The Star Wars shows mix retro styles with CGI to a good effect and a world away from the excesses of The Phantom Menace with its overused slapstick creatures.

      November 9th, 2022 - 8:18pm

Looks like that’s the case. His first adventure is in the magazine rather than on tv. In the past the last Doctor has always featured in the strip until the new Doctor has their tv debut.

    • Doctor Stu

      November 9th, 2022 - 9:40pm

I hope it’s a really short comic, along the same lines as the children in need short between parting of the ways and a Christmas carol. To have the proper introduction of a new doctor in a comic and not on tv is absolutely ridiculous. So I’m hoping it’s very short and inconsequential

    • Gareth Pugh

      November 10th, 2022 - 9:42am

Without giving away any spoilers Stu I think you’re out of luck. Having now seen it, it is clearly part one of a multi-part story and even comes with a 4-page making of with RTD talking about what a great opportunity the DWM comic strip is to make the most of this ‘DT2’ Doctor between now and November 2023 when his actual TV episodes air.

    • daz

      November 10th, 2022 - 9:44am

Personally I don’t find it ridiculous considering we only have 3 episodes with 14. The fact that the Tardis was dismantled 6 months before DT filmed anything and parts of the set were taken as trophies by actors etc too it’s unlikely we’ll see him in the console room in the specials. Or at least 13’s console room.

It could simply be RTD filling in gaps like they did with the Children in Need special in 2005 as an afterthought when someone pointed out that Barcelona sounded like the next destination/why does the Tardis crash land in The Christmas Invasion?

We’ll most likely see the next episode starting from Donna’s perspective. The Doctor doing his thing a bit after The Power of the Doctor.

Really hope we get 3 90min specials and not just 3 hours of 14.

    • Robert Sienicki

      November 11th, 2022 - 8:29am

I think it’s the comic that continues from the show and will kinda fill the gap. They confirmed the comic will have 12 parts and will go for the full year.
Also what is unprecedented, at least by looking at last 5 years is the fact that the magazine have much more access to the show now. There are tons of little bits of brand new information sparkled all over the issue.

@daz – Sorry, they confirmed they will be hour long, but let’s be honest, this is a Anniversary regeneration only, so we could celebrate the show without trying to introduce brand new Doctor at the same time. So we will get three hour Anniversary (which is twice the time 50th had).

Anyone here in ROI: Have Eason’s stopped selling DWM or is it just the branches near me?
Bought the mag religiously from #439 and #494 and have only picked up one or two copies a year since, but it seems to be getting harder to track down.

Still not sure about the diamond logo making a comeback – I loved it as a kid, and had it on both an enamel pin badge and the T-shirt with the mismatched sleeves. By contemporary standards it looks a little… naïve? Cutesy? Cartoonish? I dunno.

I think I get what they’re going for – they’re trying for instant squint – test brand recognition as per the Star Wars typeface – but I personally think they’d have been better off with the Pertwee/McGann era logo (which of course WAS being used for the classic/past era merchandising prior to everything being rebranded with the underwhelming Whittaker ”Robin Whood” logo. That logo was stylish, restrained, and, appropriately enough, timeless IMO.

Some astute people have suggested it might just be for the 60th because it’s a DIAMOND logo, though, so we’ll see.

I think it was too much of a temptation to go with the ‘diamond’ logo for the ‘diamond’ anniversary! I prefer the more subdued blue look to that horrible multi-coloured 70s version that was everywhere back then!

It is very nostalgic but maybe the Pertwee/McGann logo (although I don’t think it was intended as such back in 1969) would have been more effectively simple as you say. It’s still quite thrilling to see it back on the magazine though, and I like David’s pose in relation to it! He looks great on the cover.

I wonder if there will be another, new design when Ncuti takes over proper?

Yeah McGann definitely, considering he only has one Film to his name.
That would have been the obvious choice for a Returning Doctor.

100% agree! Be he 10 or “14” or Meta or John Smith I am absolutely sick to the back teeth of Tennant and I definitely do not need the 15th anniversary of Series 4 celebrating next year. I wish RTD could have looked beyond Tennant if they had to go with a returning actor and McGann would have been perfect! For me, at this point, the sooner we get to the Ncuti Gatwa era of Doctor Who the better as far as I’m concerned. Ncuti is the Future.

I can’t wait till midnight to get the digital version, cause I love that we’re getting an official surprise continuation of the Power of the Doctor cliffhanger in comic book form. Now I believe this is what they were hyping up in the last issue. This is big. 60th Anniversary starts now!

I wonder if this is how they plan to keep us going for the next 12 months, with comics and maybe books that will take place after the Power of the Doctor and before the first episode of the 60th Anniversary?

Also i think of this regeneration as more of an anomaly rather than the 14th doctor. Rather like the meta crisis doctor was to the original 10th. More falling into sidelines like The War Doctor, The fugitive Doctor… T,cuti should be No.14 by rights.

    • Robert Sienicki

      November 9th, 2022 - 11:10am

War Doctor and Fugitive Doctor were introduced later as a previous incarnations, Tennant right now is the next in line actor who will portray the Doctor in the chronological order. So I am fine with calling him 14th. It’s just a number.

    • pupbenny

      November 9th, 2022 - 4:48pm

I agree with ergon. I feel like if he was the Doctor again for one or two series I’d be okay with him being considered the 14th Doctor, but considering it’s only for three episodes in the space of one month, I feel like he shouldn’t be counted, especially considering he’s already the 10th Doctor.

So what is the argument about Tennant being the 14th. Doctor? (Is he an anomaly in the process of Regeneration much like the Curator?) Or is Ncuti Gatwa the proper 14th. Doctor?

    • Anon

      November 10th, 2022 - 12:18pm

The curator isn’t an anomaly he is a future incarnation, Tennant is the 14th doctor or technically the 16th doctor. 1-8, war 9-10, 10 again (it was a regeneration) 11-14 making 16 doctors, 15 regenerations.

    • Anonymous

      November 10th, 2022 - 12:31pm

I’m thinking more in the way of merchandise. Will they say ‘starring the 14th. Doctor David Tennant’ might get a bit confusing with ‘David Tennant the 10th. Doctor’ whereas The War Doctor Hurt against Tennant ‘The Bridge’ Doctor title leading to the 14th. Doctor Ncuti Gatwa sound’s so much better.

The cardboard stuff and higher cost just comes with the deluxe issues which are released about 1 or 2 times a year…

The Power of the Doctor poster was great though, I’m looking at it right now. I just wish they wouldn’t describe it as “free”

    • Mike

      November 9th, 2022 - 10:46am

Perhaps the “free” poster comment is harking back to the days in the 80s when Target offered a free poster – plus £ 2.99* for postage and packaging !

      * I can’t remember the exact cost, probably less than that.

    • Coleman

I couldn’t disagree more. Had enough of him last time around, and certainly don’t think he’s special enough as an actor to warrant two entire generations to himself. Still, each to their own.

      November 9th, 2022 - 10:58am

I Don’t Mind David Tennant at all, I thought his Portrayal of the Doctor was rather good. It’s all this FREE stuff that they keep shoving in the Mag that costs an Extra £5 that’s starting to annoy me.
Ive loved the Mag for years, but I’m getting as though I refuse to pay the extra £5. I didn’t buy last months Edition.

    • Gareth Pugh

      November 9th, 2022 - 11:30am

In fairness to Panini, I don’t think they have ever advertised the extra items as being free when they haven’t been. I do notice that the now-traditional Christmas-issue poster – which did used to be free – isn’t any more, and they tend to add an extra £1 onto the cover price for that one issue, then it goes back to normal for the first regular issue of the new year. I subscribe, and seriously, you get it all for way less than the shop price.

    • Anonymous

      November 9th, 2022 - 4:40pm

Whether you like him or not, by any metric you care to apply he’s far and away the most successful/popular Doctor of the revival era and may yet be the saviour of the franchise going forward. The series desperately needs to get a higher share of the mainstream audience back and David Tennant is the actor most likely to re – engage them.

    • the ergon

      November 9th, 2022 - 5:14pm

Thats if general viewers buy into it second time around. I really hope they do for the sake of its future. Apparently Disney+ are going to be upping the budget considerably to boost and broaden the shows popularity. Rather than just for the devoted contingent.
They can push all the money they like but its great writers and storylines that make it.

    • Bookcollector

      November 9th, 2022 - 6:13pm

As long as the money doesn’t mean the end of episodes getting a physical release on dvd/bluray then that sounds good. But if it means no releases to own then I’ll be seriously reconsidering my devotion to the show.

    • Kevin225

      November 9th, 2022 - 7:33pm

Agree with Anonymous – in terms of general public recognition and anything else you care to name David Tennant is head and shoulders above the other Nu-Who Doctors irrespective of your personal opinion. If not already the case he will be the ‘Tom Baker’ of NU-Who.

Cards on the table Eccleston still casts a long shadow IMO!

My question is what then happens if even with Tennant the show’s popularity doesn’t improve. Then what?

    • DJS

      November 10th, 2022 - 7:52am

I think its popularity will increase if marketing is carefully managed. As much as I think Character do a really good job with thier figures, in light of the Disney deal perhaps approcah Hasbro so make a 3.75 toy range to flood supermarkets and increase 60th merchandise in general. Need to make use of the App / digital generation and create an open world RPG in the Whoniverse.

I had a thought the other day, is a cross over special with Star Wars planned now the Disney deal has happened?

    • The ergon

      November 10th, 2022 - 8:55am

They tried the 3:75 line. That didnt last long. Which was a real shame as we got a few decent exclusives like Clara, The skovox blitzer and The foretold amongst a few others which i really liked. Never took off sadly.

    • DJS

      November 12th, 2022 - 7:32am

Yep they tried but no reason why that didnt work out means they cant try again. Also those 3.75 figures were too fragile, I tried assembling the Dalek Spacestation playset and it came unstuck within a day and wobbled too much. The Door on my 3.75 Tardis was already broken when i took it out the packet. And overall they were not distributed too well.
