Doctor Who Jungles of Mechanus 5.5″ Dalek Set

This item has sold out but you could keep checking www.character-online.com

Alternatively you can search for this item at www.ebay.co.uk or check www.amazon.co.uk

An ebay seller also has items for customs such as Claws and Cutting Arms

USA /Australian/ Outside of the EU buyers will have the VAT deducted. The total USA delivered cost seems to be around $45 or even less depending on location.

This unique set includes 2 x highly detailed 5.5 inch scale Daleks with points of articulation, and comes beautifully presented in Heritage style Doctor Who branded packaging with specially created insert. A must have for all Doctor Who fans and collectors.

Way back in 1965, a six-part First Doctor story entitled ‘The Chase’ became famous in the eyes of Doctor Who fans for being special in many ways. It featured some unique ‘guest’ Daleks seen in Episode Three and Five. The exclusive Jungles of Mechanus Dalek Figure Set, has been created to offer something unique to delight fans and collectors and to pay homage to the unique Daleks seen onscreen. ‘The Chase’ storyline follows The First Doctor and his companions Ian, Barbara and Vicky who are forced to flee through time in the TARDIS after they learn that a group of Daleks, with their own Time Ship are following them with orders to exterminate!

An epic chase through space and time ensues, starting on the Planet Aridius and then continuing through locations including the Empire State Building, the ‘Marie Celeste’ ship, and even an old haunted house populated by classic horror characters. Heading to a final confrontation, the TARDIS lands on the Planet Mechanus, where the Daleks arrive shortly afterwards. Pursued by multiple Dalek patrols through the dense and aggressive Mechanus jungle, the travellers eventually come upon a strange metallic city suspended high in the sky which belongs to an equally evil robot species known as the Mechanoids.

Al Dewar, Character Options’ Head of Product Development, went on to explain why for him it holds a special place in his heart.

“Firstly it’s the final adventure for the last of the original TARDIS companions, Ian and Barbara but it also features the first and last appearance of a race of robotic creatures the Mechanoids”

“Dalek aficionados will also know that it marks the appearance of some rather special ‘guest’ Dalek props that were seen in Episodes 3 and 5. At the time of filming the BBC were short of Dalek props having only three left. New Daleks were commissioned, but to fill the gap, they hired three Dalek props from the ‘Doctor Who and The Daleks’ movie.

“These ‘guest’ Daleks were chosen because they had sucker arms which matched the Daleks from the BBC series and two are seen in altered form, with their deep skirt bases and light covers removed. The second and more exciting appearances however, are two unaltered props glimpsed several times as part of the Dalek patrols pursuing the TARDIS crew through the Jungle.

“As fans will know, we’ve introduced the Dalek Twin pack sets starting with ‘The Daleks’ and ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’ this year which begin to chart the chronological TV appearances of the Doctors greatest and oldest enemies. So, it was a fitting next step therefore to announce a new and unique Dalek Two figure Set which neatly dovetails into that series.

“It is these special ‘guest’ Daleks that we present here in our new Online Exclusive. With their distinctively different light covers and skirt bases along with unique metallic colours, this set brings the fans and collectors a one-off unique TV Dalek Action Figure never produced before.”

Booboo have CO given any indication if shipping today how soon we should expect delivery? I’m assuming it’s a warehouse somewhere not their head office which I believe isn’t far from me. Usually around most days but a recent death means will be elsewhere some days. A large box of Dalek’s on the doorstep could become of interest to neighbours/passers by.

Only 1000~ pcs remaining as of yesterday according to Al Dewar. Set seems to have been judged a success, as Al has already been asked to put together 2 more sets.

Though for 2 more set’s to apparently be confirmed already, seems it’s been judged a success all round very quickly, so certainly promising.

Also good only 20% of this set is left in stock on just the pre-orders and the rest to probably just trickle down over the next couple of weeks/months.

booboo? What is the point of them repeating ‘these will never be released again’? The only reason I can think is it persuades a few more people to buy while they have the chance, but why not keep producing them if there does seem to be a market?

Money in out done and dusted no large volume of stock tying up capital. selling 5000 of these seems easily done selling another 5000 later on may prove problematic. They still have unsold missy’s from years ago.

If anyone is on the fence, it forces them to make the order now that they know if they miss out they’ll never get another chance.

Do you think if these are successful that character may look into doing other online exclusives? I think, like these daleks, they could focus on army builder figures (whereas missy was not), I am hopeful that these cads can be upscaled- if they could upscale the 2013 cybermen, ice warriors and zygons, there would be figures to display on the shelf for 2013 to 2017 other than the doctor, missy and his companions. This is why I’m excited about the 12th doctor and davros set, just something different to display

My first proper experience with the Daleks was when I watched my dad’s DVDs of the Peter Cushing Dalek films. I enjoyed the colorful designs and the versatility of the Daleks being both intimidating villains and having a couple of humorous moments. I genuinely had no idea Doctor Who figures existed until 2007, and I didn’t even manage to get my hands on one until 2011. The figure I wanted more than any other was a figure of the Daleks from the Peter Cushing films.

These two Daleks are literally the figures I have been waiting my whole life for.

Theoretically, since the serial was in black & white, you can’t tell what colour thy actually were, so CO could release the red variant as well, though that might be sailing a little close to the licensing wind!

I think it’s best for Character Online to produce figures that have “army building” potential – a single customer is likely to buy more than 1 of that same product. The options available to them are; Daleks, Cybermen, Silurians, Yeti etc . . .

It’s been done before, the NOTD 8th Doctor and both Missys and the 1st 12th Doctor variants were scaled up/down in both sizes. I imagine they have a main scan which in theory can then be put into either scale. I don’t know this for fact but I’d say/hope it could be true given the examples

If it is true that the cads can be used for the 5 inch figures too, I’d love to see them upscale the waistcoat 12 and time of the doctor Clara, as well as rusty, zygons, ice warrior, the skovox blitzer and the foretold (and ofc the 2013 cybermen)

    • dalekpigslave

      September 4th, 2020 - 1:02am

firstly to anybody thinking they shall commison the 2013 cybermen other charactars.

I can confirm a big massive red pill “HELL NO”

The movie daleks are just recycled B&M sets, and those who say it has new dome light, mean “new tooling potential in the future”

      first compare

movie dalek just need ONE NEW PART

2013 cybermen need, FOOT PARTS, ANKLE PARTS, UPPER LEG PARTS, WAIST PARTS, HAND PARTS, ELBOW PARTS, ARM PARTS, ONE ON THE RIGHT AND THE OTHER ON THE LEFT SIDE.

      TOO EXPENSIVE.

IT ALSO DOES NOT HELP THAT THEIR AMAZING NEW SCULPT RECON DALEK, TOTALLY

FLOPPED, resulted in argos selling them for £4.50 brand new.

So no I think charactar are just gonna recycle old part with tiny new tooling,

      sorry

    • booboo

      September 4th, 2020 - 8:23am

It depends on What Character have in mind, being as they are getting all the profit from these, as opposed to having to sell at trade, and realistically they are maybe more expensive than one might expect for a twin pack, if they work they might consider putting that addition revenue towards completely new tooling that would not be viable otherwise.

In effect a kick starter but with the money safely in advance.

    • The Werewolf

      September 4th, 2020 - 10:51am

DalekPigSlave if they are using the existing molds for the 2013 Cybermen to make 5.5inch figures then it is not making any new parts at all, just reusing parts at 3.75 unless you count changing the size as a new part. Though I would imagine that blowing them up would mean less detailed sculpts, even if they use the version 2 Cybermen sculpts.

    • booboo

      September 4th, 2020 - 10:56am

they would use the cad which can be used for any scale, even 1:1 i think. that exists

    • Dalekpigslave

      September 4th, 2020 - 2:47pm

I did not know they can inflate different sizes

    • The Outcast

      September 4th, 2020 - 4:07pm

I don’t think 2013 Cybermen are too unlikely as online exclusives, IF these Daleks go well (which they seem to have done). Remember: we never thought we’d get both Romanas, Classic Sarah Jane, Harry Sullivan or Benton and Yates, and yet we got all of them this year. So it seems to me, that CO online exclusives, with their higher price tag and profits going straight to CO, could provide us with one or two new figures down the road, or atleast a figure with a fair bit of new tooling, even if it did reuse parts.

And in terms of 2013 Cybermen as online exclusives, there’s a fair bit few variants they can do there to help spread the costs. Arm gun, no army gun, light and arm gun, light and no arm gun, and possibly even CyberDanny and Wooden Cyberman variants. Also, they have the CADs, which reduces costs on making these particular figures.

So yeah, I’m wouldn’t say it’s unlikely we won’t get new tooled figures, but neither would I say it’s entirely likely. This is entirely unknown territory.

      September 4th, 2020 - 6:21pm

Online exclusive 2013 Cyberman at full price, then put it in a B&M set with a slight variation a few months later. That would work. People will still buy

    • Who_collector

      September 5th, 2020 - 11:36am

B an m vould fund half and character could fund half and then we could get a few variants out of the mold. For example an army building 3 pack with mondasian cybus and 2013 cybermen for b an m. And the regular figure for character maybe witha small difference like the arm gun or arc reactor

    • Mrs Croot

      September 5th, 2020 - 6:22pm

As some Star Wars collectors may know, the Kenner figure of 8D8 was actually made as a 12″ figure (the 12″ line stopped 3 years earlier, meaning a very rare 12″ figure for the owner of the prototype) as the complexity of the legs would be to hard for 3.75, so they then used the machine to scale him down to the right size. This means it would be possible to scale up Doctor Who figures if this was possible in the 1980’s.

Is the lack of vertical bits on the neck bins of one of the Daleks in the promo image intentional or an error? Is there a Dalek like that in the movie? Can’t say I ever noticed.

    • Button

      September 1st, 2020 - 6:31pm

This Dalek to my knowledge is based on the mold used for the Dead Planet Dalek that came out first in the Dalek Collectors set 1 many many years ago. Its base also comes from the base made for the Supreme Dalek that was also featured in the set. In terms of accuracy the two slats on the mid section are also missing the rivets and the collar nubbins at the front, character tends to use existing parts as much as usual.

Probably not the place to ask – but really curious how in the Blu Ray Boxed set interview with Deep Roy, he spoke as if he wasn’t aware of the Character Options “Mr Sin”, he even asks if someone can send him one. Does this mean actors aren’t paid royalty for their likeness? If so then what is hold up with “Yeti’s” and so on as I always assumed it was a rights/money issue?

    • Bundy

      September 1st, 2020 - 6:54am

I believe you only need involve the actor when you are using their likeness – when the actor is behind a mask you only need the permission of the owner of the rights to the character and its appearance.
I often wonder about a case where an actor does not want their likeness to be used – can you simply release a figure that uses a generic head? There are loads of variations of Superman – some look like the actors that have played him, some look like the comics/animated series, some very generic, but all are instantly recognisable because of the outfit which is rights owned by DC.

    • Alex Oswin

      September 1st, 2020 - 7:10pm

In reply to Bundy, it seems to vary what the situation is with actor likenesses.
In the case of Who figures I believe actors can refuse to have more figures released of them if they don’t approve it (this is rumoured to be why there was only ever one Donna as apparently Catherine Tate didn’t like the likeness).
But sometimes it can depend on when someone portrayed a character and what contract they signed (this is apparently why Disney can release Mary Poppins merch with Julie Andrews likeness but don’t release Giselle from Enchanted as they’d have to pay Amy Adams).
Also a friend of mine once told me that sometimes companies create deliberately bad/vague likenesses in toys to avoid paying actors image royalties (this seems particularly the case with basic/playline Marvel action figures).

      Cheers everybody for the info,

Really wish they would sell out more quickly as well, which shall ensure character to do more online exclusives,

I tend to think the vast majority of sales volume happen in the fist 48 hours on this type with a big drop after that and a gradual daily decline, the promotion of these sets is virtually all social media led as well and this particular set has has some big advantages.

There will still be a wider group outside of that and its how to reach those people.

    • prototype dalek

      August 31st, 2020 - 10:35am

I suppose you have to also take in to account forbidden planet prices were also more higher than B&M, considering the average prices for a set were around £30-£35.

Though as long as a majority of stock has been sold, I am sure character will class it as a success, especially on just pre-order’s.

    • Judooning

      August 31st, 2020 - 12:45pm

Thing is with a set like this, it will eventually sell out at full price. There’s no need for it to go on clearance. Sales will trickle in gradually throughout time. People always need/want Daleks.
I remember at my local Toymaster store, the sound FX wave of Daleks was rammed full on the shelf and it took a while for them to sell…but they did all sell at rrp. And now look how rare they are.

I guess , no new moulding, just repaints

      Magican apprentice repaints

      dalek sec

Metal tron dalek with the gold ring painted ( fix one)

      most likely.

I really hate it when people suggest fantasy ideas like a modern dalek emporor etc, really break the spirit upon reality check,

    • The Outcast

      August 31st, 2020 - 1:27pm

But these new Daleks have new light toolings. So I don’t think it’ll just be repaints if we get more online exclusives. Indeed, it might not even be Daleks, the last online exclusive from CO were the two Missy figures. You’re right to limit your expectation but don’t limit them too much.

      August 31st, 2020 - 5:45pm

Though I agree with booboo, whilst social media coverage of this set has been pretty great and widespread, there is still a wider group outside of that and best way to boost sales is finding how to get info across to those people.

As we’ve seen, half a dozen people have bought these off eBay for inflated prices so it’s getting the news across to all people that is the key to good sales.

Jumping on the wish-list bandwagon, I’ve always hoped someone would make a gold Emperor Dalek, as portrayed in the TV Comic Dalek strips, with his little eye-stalk coming out of his bulbous head. I’ve always had a soft spot for that character, and the Davros Emperor from Remembrance just never did it for me. Although I never thought it would happen, since the CO range seemed only licensed for TV, the recent Big Finish variants have perhaps introduced a bit of wiggle room.

Booboo do you think b and m will ever do something like toys r us did for the 50th anniversary and produce a doctor and enemy twin pack? Maybe not the daleks as toys r us did that, but it’d be nice to have something along those lines and it could be re releases of rare figures or even repaints

I’d really love to see a genesis davros rerelease and it would be cool if we could see a doctor and villain 2 pack range for 2023 to coincide with the 60th, that utilises new sculpts (highly unlikely but here are some ideas:
1 and war machine (rotacast with some moveable appendages)
2 and either rotacast dalek emperor or wheel cybermen
      3 and silurians
4 and mandrels or marshmen (to boost his later era display, would love some rotocast ogri to pose with romana 1 too)
      5 and tractators
      6 and valeyard
      7 and haemovores
8 and flood cybermen (would never happen but I wish)
      War and 2013 zygons
9 and accurate sculpt mutant reveal dalek
10 and 2013 ice warriors (cold vengeance)
      11 and 2013 cybermen
      12 and 2017 mondasian cybermen
13 and 2020 cyber warriors or ashad

      A lad can dream…

We were so close to this before ibn the 3.75″ line, as finished prototypes were made of a Dead Planet Dalek, Movie Dalek and 12th Doctor in red coat. Finally we are getting this.

This also means they won’t be in the Chase set after all, so maybe we can get a Dalek guard rereleased?

Oh I remember those prototypes, think they were £20-£25 each. Looked amazing and couldn’t believe I missed out on them, though did get one of the boxed one’s luckily.

    John,
I do it all the time with the Big Chief Studios 12 inch Dr Who series
We’ve most of the Drs Now and last four should be coming over next year or so.
If it wasn’t for crowdfunding (I hate to be blunt) but we would have none of them.

I’m really happy that Character Options were able to release this version of the Chase dalek with the raised dome lights and blue fender.

I’ve ordered 2 sets, I might repaint a set to represent the black dalek and red dalek 😀

Just repaint the B&M set and make new lights – its cheaper!

Unfortunately my town hasnt got the B&M sets in which would mean paying over the odds with ebay prices, so it wouldn’t be cheaper

They won’t crowdfund, they have said that. Personally I disike it immensely and wouldn’t subscribe to something you might or might not get years down the line!

Yes and any minute I am expecting Daleks toys to be announced based on Rolykins, Marx and Herts plastic moulders because they are also canon due to be seeing on screen.

Well done CO – great set and great method for making the figures available to everyone.

The only problem with online buying for me as a ‘mint in box’ collector is that I have to rely on the mail packaging to protect the set’s box.

CO, if you read this – please, please use a cardboard box with plenty of internal padding when you mail these out. Thanks!!!

      August 28th, 2020 - 9:45am

So far I have counted 61 on eBay (So far) from 8 different sellers and like booboo said, only 5 sold. The cheapest one is at £37.99.

    • booboo

      August 28th, 2020 - 9:53am

some of those though will be ordering to order and have probably will not have even ordered them from CO yet.

But 5 in 3 days shows there is no demand for these on ebay.

      August 28th, 2020 - 10:01am

Its like you said, there is always a few who don’t use social media or forums and just see something new and buy it without checking. I assume 95% of people know where the source of ordering these sets are and also because they are online exclusive, it is much easier for everyone to get hold of without panicking about not getting them so demand from elsewhere is pretty much nothing

    • booboo

I think there is a lot of people and groups that have done everything they can to make this work so it might give confidence to future releases from character online.

    • booboo

      August 28th, 2020 - 1:02pm

That’s less than 2% of the available stock leaving the other 98% with Character, and Still only 5 sold, why do you continuously look for a problem where there isn’t one, some of those are clearly going to only order what they have orders for as well.

    JL,
Army builders have as good a chance of being made as any, as they should sell In there thousands.
Alternately, more obscure figures could also be made without risk to the company.

If character ever did do that, I’d love to see some army building figures to help boost the 2013 to present display such as the 2013 redesigns of cybermen, ice warriors and zygons, the 2017 mondasians and I’d love to see the 1970 silurians and 2020 cybermen too

If Character do eventually start crowdfunding.
All their prototypes might become reality, like the Yeti and 2nd Doctor with fur coat to name but two.
    (People willing of course).
