Yesteryear Feature – Dapol 25th Anniversary Set

Dapol 25th Anniversary Tardis Console Set

In 1988 Dapol introduced a 25th anniversary set with the infamous five sided (should have been six) Tardis console. It is now highly collectable and one of the rarest Dapol items. It retailed for £39.99 – a large sum of money back then.

A Tardis console to match the currant range of 5″ classic figures is now high on people lists of most wanted items.

The box: This set was supplied with a green K9 and Melanie with a pink top…

25TH Anniversary set comprises :

7th Doctor…

A Time Lord from Gallifrey. An articulated figure.
Melanie…
The last companion of the 6th Doctor and the first companion of the 7th. Also articulated.
K-9…
The Doctor’s personal robot-dog computer with pull back action, wagging tail and nodding head. Runs around baseboard track.
Console…
Electrically operated rise and fall centre section with flashing light and illuminated TV screen. The Console is fitted onto the baseplate centrally on the three locating pins marked A.
Tardis… ___
With flashing light and opening doors. This item opens out to form the backscene when clipped onto the supplied baseplate.

The set up: The Tardis comes apart so the interior can be used as walls. A large base is supplied…

Separate items: A base plate and top are supplied so the Tardis (with opening doors) can be used as a stand alone item plus an original Dapol advert from Doctor Who magazine dated March 1988…

Original Dapol leaflets promoting the Tardis console along with a Dapol price list…

I Have one of these – also I have another one and some of the toys which are still in their packaging and are signed by some of the cast and the old producer, when they went to the factory on a day out; many moons ago.

Why is this soooooo expensive! I want one so bad. To find one in the States is even more difficult so if you one, your going to wind up paying through the nose. 🙁

I have this set, it’s one of my favourite Who items. The photos above are missing the extra tardis interior wall section, which connected to the opened up tardis to make the interior bigger.

I also have the dapol millennium darleks and the davros/daleks collectors set. Very cool.

When a picture of k9 was sent to the manufacturer the reflection from the grass made it look green so that’s the colour they made it 🙂

The item I always really hankered after was the Third Doctor’s Whomobile. There was a prototype made but, like the promised 6-sided Tardis Console, it was never released to mass manufacture (I have a promotional leaflet somewhere showing the Whomobile).
Often thought if I had the space I could set up a museum with all the old Dr Who collectables! Which leads me on to Danbury Mint’s Chess set…but that’s another story, for another time…

Being extremely ancient, I remember collecting Dapol Dr Who figures from the very beginning. I still have the 25th Anniversary set along with some of the very early and much later figures too. The excitement of having a tardis set was immense and there was always a new product being promised although they sometimes never appeared. I even have one of the rare two-handed Davros ‘mistakes’. There was a millennium Dalek set too with weird glittery paint schemes and a re-issue of the tardis with sound effects unit built in and a different light.

I had one of these back in the day… I was about 12 at the time!

It was sold on eBay a few years back and raised quite a bit more than the original £39.99… Still not sure if I should have sold it or not, but I’m sure it made someone very happy 🙂

i would love a classic console, a company was doing one (sixteen12) but it was cancelled through lack of demand – i was expensive though but looked fantastic . As any new one wouldn’t be made in huge quantities you will probably get a basic painted mould for 39.99

It’d be nice to have a few dapol figures, It would be good if they released a console set for the figures today with this, a bit like the scale scale the Junkyard Tardis, a bit bigger though and with an ‘exclusive’ Ace, Melanie and Brigadier figures!
