Dr. Who & The Daleks: The Official Story of the Films

Regenerated in out of this world 4K, Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. directed by Gordon Flemyng, stars Peter Cushing in his return to the big screen as British TV’s most iconic sci-fi hero, Dr. Who. The earth of 2150 A.D. is a desolate and hostile ruin of a planet, crumbling at the edge of civilisation, slowly disappearing into the darkness of space.

For the future of planet earth now belongs to The Daleks, a destructive army of alien invaders who have turned humans into cowering slaves. Meanwhile deep within the London Underground a group of resistance freedom fighters are planning an attack. But there’s only one man who could possibly help them succeed in destroying their extra-terrestrial enemies and take back control of planet earth. A man of mystery, a man of time and space, a man known only as… The Dr.

If anyone’s not got it yet, this is currently on Amazon and Zavvi for £16.99, which is the cheapest I’ve ever seen it.

Just Arrived this morning, I think it looks Gorgeous.
Just Bought 7 Black Series figures yesterday and noticed my Bank Account was around £30 short. Was leaving it until today to contact my bank as I thought their had been some pilfering going on.
Glad this came in the post when it did, totally forgot I’d ordered it.

Well, I heard from here that the Horror channel is showing these 4K remastered versions, so I taped thme to have a look. Indeed, for 2151AD it had a card beforehand saying it had been restored, etc, but for Dr Who And The Daleks it didn’t, but I assume it was also implied to be the restored version.

However, I still have these films taped from back when they were on in December on Talking Pictures or whatever channel it was. And, comparing them, the original is WAY more clearer than the supposed 4K remaster. I figured it might be because the Horror Channel isn’t in HD (at least for me) but neither is the Talking Pictures channel.

It could be because I don’t have a 4K TV, but surely there’d be some improvement as opposed to the definite downgrade the 4K version has when seen on TV seemingly. WAY less clear. I presume this won’t be a problem with the actual release, in cinemas, DVD’s, etc, but just interesting to note that my comparisons on raw TV show that the original is way clearer and better quality for both films.

Just thought it was interesting to note. 🙂

I see that the 50 pound box sets come with a 4k disc and a bluray disc. Does anyone know if the steel books come with two discs?

I am saying yes, Zavvi for one say this is a 2 disc set and my Total Recall and Don’t Look Now Steelbooks both feature UHD and Blu-ray Discs.

I wouldn’t be sure about that. Many of the ZAVVI box sets I have just have a regular Amaray Blu-ray case, while the steel books were sold separately. So you might want to get the Steelbook and Then sell your duplicate on eBay to get some money back

Geez all I can say is if the description says 2 discs then there should be 2 discs and if there is just one I will be returning mine, the product is not as described. The StudioCanal Steenboks I have don’t have details on the front like for instance Universals UHDs.

Pre-ordered both the steelbooks, excited for these, not seen them in around 10 years, maybe longer.

They don’t have separate elements, so it’s unlikely I would say – Canal don’t usually do digital unpicking. I would be interested to know if they’re using Mark Ayres’ restored tracks as featured on the US Kino blus though, because he fixed the problems with Canal’s masters (as featured on all the non-US releases). Does anyone know where Mark posts these days?

Have you tried FaceBook? That’s probably a yes I’m guessing. Given there’s a new feature about the restoration the soundtrack might now fully restore the dialogue, sound effects, and music missing from previous masters.

Great news, thank you. It was only the first film that had the problem Rex?

Booboo: Thanks for finding that. It does make my recent purchases of the Kino discs redundant though!
Rob: From memory, Invasion Earth just had some issues around the reel changes – so not perfect, but probably similar to what a lot of people would have experienced in the cinema. There’s interesting debate about reel changes elsewhere, because Coppola has cut a shot from Godfather II because it was only there because he expected the reel ends to wear out and he didn’t actually want people to see it (a character starts crying). I’m actually watching films differently now after reading about it.

I also think the Blu-rays are Region B for any interested overseas buyers, all the StudioCanal releases I have are.
