Doctor Who The Reign of Terror DVD

Doctor Who The Reign of Terror DVD

Release date: 28/01/2013

The TARDIS materialises not far from Paris in 1794 – one of the bloodiest years following the French Revolution of 1789.

The travellers become involved with an escape chain rescuing prisoners from the guillotine and get caught up in the machinations of an English undercover spy, James Stirling – alias Lemaitre, governor of the Conciergerie Prison.

The Doctor – posing as a Regional Officer of the Provinces – is twice brought before the great tyrant, Robespierre himself, and has to talk himself out of trouble.

Ian and Barbara, meanwhile, have a close encounter with a future ruler of France, Napoleon Bonaparte. As events reach their climax, Robespierre is overthrown – shot in the jaw and dragged off to the prison – and the Doctor and his friends slip quietly away.

The Reign of Terror was originally released on VHS in a box set along with The remaining episodes of The Faceless ones and the Web of Fear…

Whilst trying to return to London in the 1960’s, the TARDIS instead takes The Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan to France in the eighteenth century.

The travellers realise that they’ve arrived in the middle of the French revolution – a period in history that saw the French nobility and their supporters overthrown.

Ian, Barbara and Susan are arrested as traitors, and locked in the concierge prison where Ian learns from a dying prisoner about the mysterious spy James Stirling.

Barbara and Susan are sentenced to be executed , but are rescued before arriving at the guillotine.

The Doctor takes on the disguise of a senior revolutionary, and has to outwit Robespierre, the leader of the revolution, in order to try and reunite himself with his companions. But as treachery and .double-dealing abound, who can be trusted…? This story was broadcast on BBC between 8 August 12 September 1964.

This story will have its missing episodes animated. Some test shots are shown below.

People! I want genuine information on animated episodes. I would like to see:
The Crusade, Episodes 2 and 4
    The Tenth Planet, Episode 4
The Underwater Menace, Episodes 1 and 3
The Moonbase, Episodes 1 and 3
The Ice Warriors, Episodes 2 and 3

Is this likely? I need to know more about the DVD range’s future 🙂

The Crusade: 2&4 – Nothing mentioned
The Tenth Planet: 4 – Test Shots shown from a an earlier episode (doesn’t actually mean they’ll animate it)
The Underwater Menace: 1&4 (3 Exists!) – Nothing mentioned though could be a good way to release the newly found episode
The Moonbase: 1&3 – Some special features have been stated to have been recorded (doesn’t actually mean they’ll animate it)
The Ice Warriors: 2&3 Trailer passed on BBFC doesn’t actually mean they’ll animate it)

[Mission To The Unknown – Nothing Official – Levine has fan animation]

i am going to sell all of my vanilla releases of all the new doctor who episodes (2005 onwards) and hopefully with replace them all with the box sets (for example sell all 4 volumes of series 1 and then buy the complete 1st series) I plan to do this with all the series (bar series 6 which i already own). The only reason i am doing this is because amazon are selling them dirt cheap

i got all of £20! seriously 20 quid, what a rip off. I sold my copies to a second hand shop(named cash converters, never going there again) 🙂

      January 9th, 2013 - 7:13am

l would have done the same at one stage but l felt that it would be a complete waste because l would be getting at least a fifth of what l had paid for the volumes all together. l have Series 2, Series 3 and Series 4 in volumes and l actually like the volumes alot because of the covers but l am going to buy the Boxsets so l can get all the extras later on but when they decrease in price of course.

    • Lachie

      January 9th, 2013 - 7:17am

Alot of TV Shows (not just Who) will actually sell a Boxset release afterwards like Sherlock. And the Boxsets usually are around $20 here in Australia at the moment Series 1-6 Boxsets on DVD are priced at $45 so l’m going to wait a couple of years for the decrease to other shows.

    • drjakeyoung

      January 9th, 2013 - 9:38am

really, there that expensive?! the complete series 1-4 box series is only £25 here in the UK. you can get series 1-6 (including specials) for about £40

    • Lachie

      January 10th, 2013 - 10:28pm

Well for one thing over here in Aus what they did was re-new the boxset releases from 2005, 2006 and so on to fit one dvd case basically so it wasn’t like a boxset yet it had the same content just in a smaller case and all new because it was a 2010 release it also had the purple BBC Logo swell and because of that they raised the price a little. For another thing your forgetting the exchange rate. Besides you live in the UK (basically where the BBC is things are bound to be cheaper… Although we do have 20% of sales around once a month. 🙂

    • drjakeyoung

      January 11th, 2013 - 4:36pm

ah, that clears things up then, i forgot about the exchange rate 🙂

    • Blake

      January 15th, 2013 - 9:23pm

really they are cheap as hell in aussie then, series 1-6 (including specials) are all at least $80, the complete specials, 5,6 are all close if not $100 and i wanted to replace my volumes as well and drdrakeyoung, cash converters are criminals, they gave me $30 for my old bike that i had outgrown and was in great condition

    • drjakeyoung

      January 16th, 2013 - 10:26am

lol, never going to cash converters again 🙂

Making-Of Featurette “Don’t Lose Your Head”
      Photo Gallery
      Animation Gallery
      Trailer “The First Doctor Returns”

    • Alex Noonan

      January 4th, 2013 - 2:18pm

Yeah, but just wondering whether anyone who is in the know knows whether they’re planning Special Editions of The Two Doctors, Earthshock, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, etc. Do you think The Tenth Planet and The Ice Warriors will have animated episodes? And surely they’ll have to animate episodes 1 and 3 of The Moonbase for a DVD?

So what’s your favourite guilty pleasure Doctor Who story? Mine has to be either Attack of the Cybermen or Carnival of Monsters.

    • Gordon

      January 4th, 2013 - 8:57pm

I know that there are no current plans to revisit earthshock but beyond that no idea but in my opinion there really isnt any storys left that have enough of a reason to be revisited. Any story that has 1/2 episodes missing can be considered for animation but whether or not they are animating tenth planet and ice warriors hasnt been officially anounced but as the vhs recon of both stories have been confirmed as extras i would say animation for both is a strong possibility. Time monster is my guilty pleasure

    • matparks08

    • Alex Noonan

It’s annoying that SPECIAL EDITION is put down the spine. Ruins the collect a bit.

    • Alex Noonan

      January 5th, 2013 - 12:19am

It’s just a shame that they have SPECIAL EDITION written across the spine. Spoils the collection somewhat.

    • Gordon

      January 5th, 2013 - 9:33am

Its not on the reverse side (with the exception of varos)

    • MasterKasterborous

      January 5th, 2013 - 5:19pm

Not on the flip side (bar Vengeance). If they do animate The Moonbase I do hope they won’t call it a SE as although two episodes were released on Lost In Time it’s not yet had a release.

    • Alex Noonan

      January 5th, 2013 - 7:50pm

We should get a petition going to BBC Worldwide for them to issue new, SPECIAL EDITION-less Vengeance on Varos sleeves then! Only takes one to spoil a collection!

(As you can tell I get OCD over things like this haha)

l believe The DVD Releases should have at least more Orphan Episodes than that of Missing Episodes in each one otherwise it just feels to me like its to much animation not actual footage of the Episode that was made you know, for example if Ian Levine does make his Animated The Daleks Master Plan the 2:1 ratio of Missing Episode to Animation will be too different for me however l could take it if it was a 4 Part like the Celestial Toymaker with Episodes 1-3 Animated

    • rojblake82

    • gordon

I’ve been lucky enough to see the animated Episode 4 of this in September and it’s a real treat. For those who haven’t had an opportunity there have been a few clips from a couple of events posted on a certain video site.

However, now there is an opportunity to view some officialy released footage from the animated The Reign Of Terror in Thetamation’s showreel: http://planet55studios.com.au/

(This also includes some TEST footage from an existing Tenth Planet episode and what seems to be some colour, widescreen The Power Of The Daleks clips.)

It looks a bit like anime which is awesome! If this is how things are going the animation is going to be alot different to the Invasion and will be unique. Please all buy the Reign of Terror DVD Release this is my type of animation. I reckon they have a back up plan so if The Reign of Terror’s sales don’t end up good they can replace the animation with what the Recons made in the VHS releases of Ice Warriors and Tenth Planet.

If the ice warriors is due in april like rumours suggest there is no way they will be able to wait to see how reign of terror does first before deciding on whether or not animating ice warriors so they will have made their mind up already on that one. I think its more looking at sales figuers for others ie crusade underwater menace etc

      Pyramids of Mars
      The Leisure Hive
      Earthshock
      The Two Doctors
      Ghost Light
      The Curse of Fenric

None of those really scream out revisit to me, Maybe 2 doctors but thats about it. The rest either cant really be improved or is missing a making of and that alone isnt really enough to warrent a revisit in my opinion

Thanks Gordon, I hope this list will help others as it has helped me funnily enough l was about to buy The Ark in Space only a few months ago aswell but its release date and with the information l looked at on The Restoration Team website l decided not to. December 17th, 2012 - 11:32am

The original release was hindered by only getting a 1 disc release. The episodes with the extras on the same disc made it too compressed and the picture quality suffered. Also there was a documentary called What katy did next which was dropped as there was no room. And to top it off its the only pertwee story not to have a making of

Am I one of the only ones who plans to keep both the original and special editions? I’ve yet to buy a SE but will be buying The Aztecs next year to see Air Lock again (it’s a brilliant episode!) and then will get the rest when I’ve finished the main range.

      Then I’ll order them:

      Lost In Time
Chronological Main Range (With ‘Shada’ After ‘Nimon’)
      K9 And Company
Chronological Special Editions (With Blu-Ray ‘Spearhead’ After ‘Spearhead’ SE)

    • Lachlan

      December 18th, 2012 - 10:17pm

Haha l had Tomb and Spearhead from Space originally and after watching the work on the SE l just felt like l didn’t need it at all l didn’t throw them away though l let my friend have them as a gift but since then l think l’ll take back tomb just so l can see the comparison in the VidFire and so l can watch Tombwatch again. Spearhead from Space however will now have a Blu-Ray release!

    • MasterKasterborous

      December 19th, 2012 - 2:47pm

In the end I’d then have three copies of Spearhead on my shelf but hey!

The Ice Warriors and Tenth Planet are bound to happen as they have material but the first 3 have all that survives in the Lost in Time (except Underwater Menace) so l guess for the Restoration Team those 3 are optional everything will be clear once this has been release how animation will go.

Well ian levine did offer bbc ww mission to the unknown but it was turned down because there was nowhere for it to go. Ian is now trying to get the funds together to do masterplan. If he does manage to complete that i supose he probably will offer it to them along with mission. I feel there is less hurdles in the way than his shada and there is more chance of getting a release.I just hope he actually bothers to get clearance this time round

Given the lack of troughton you would think they would have animated the ice warriors first.
As for the tenth planet I still have hopes that part four will be returned.

Out of reign ice warriors and tenth planet (remember when reign was put into production underwater menace wasnt possible at the time) reign has the least going for it as it doesnt have a regeneration or a popular monster. Putting reign out first gives it a comercial boost of being the first in a new style of animation and it gives them time to iron out any wrinkles before it gets on the big hitters

I think that we could have the tenth planet by the end of 2013, because someone who went to the day of the Daleks screening in sydney, Australia said that when the special trailer for the regin of terror had finished the boss of 2 entertain said that they have plans to animate other hartnell stories that have episodes missing, and the tenth planet should be at the top of the list because it’s one of the most wanted lost releases on DVD!

That is if it is getting animated. Animation for ice warriors has yet to be officially confirmed. It is likely yes but not official. Some people believe as it is expected too soon after reign of terror we will get the vhs recon instead. Steve roberts has confirmed the recon will appear but didnt say if it was main feature or as an extra. Plus i dont want to tempt fate by saying animation is definitly happening when it has yet to be officially confirmed

If they do just re release the VHS recon then i think a lot of people will be disappointed. And also it’s just an excuse not to spend a lot of money to animate it, and give it the status it deserves.
