Doctor Who The Mind of Evil DVD

dvd-mindofevilDoctor Who The Mind of Evil DVD

Professor Keller has created a machine that can pacify even the most dangerous of criminals.

But when the Doctor and Jo arrive at Stangmoor Prison for a demonstration, things start to go horribly wrong – especially when they discover that the Doctor’s old enemy the Master is responsible for the machine.

What could he possibly want from the criminals?

And what connects him with an impending World Peace Conference?

Starring Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, The Mind of Evil will be released, restored to full colour, on DVD in June 2013.

Previously released on VHS in black and white, after the colour masters of the story were junked, this DVD release sees all the episodes fully restored and re-mastered.

Disc 1 contents

  • 6 x 25 mins approx colour episodes with mono audio.
  • Commentary – stereo. With actors Katy Manning, Pik-Sen Lim and Fernanda Marlowe, director Timothy Combe, producer Barry Letts, script editor Terrance Dicks and stunt arranger Derek Ware. Moderated by Toby Hadoke.
  • Programme subtitles.
  • Subtitle Production Notes.

Disc 2 contents

  • The Military Mind (dur. 22’ 43”) – shot back in 2009 on location at Dover Castle, this look at the making of the story is made unexpectedly poignant by the appearance of Nicholas Courtney and Barry Letts, who both passed away in the intervening years. Featuring actors Nicholas Courtney, Pik-Sen Lim and Fernanda Marlow, director Timothy Combe, producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks. Narrated by Cameron McEwan.
  • Now & Then (dur. 7’ 06”) – the latest in our long-running series visits the filming locations used in the story to see how they have changed over the years.
  • Behind the Scenes: Television Centre (dur. 24’ 00”) – back in 1971, at around the time The Mind of Evil was in production, presenter Norman Tozer visited Television Centre to find out what went on over 24 hours in the life of what was then an incredibly busy ‘television factory’.
  • Photo Gallery – production, design and publicity photos from the story.
  • Coming Soon – a trailer for a forthcoming DVD release
  • Radio Times Listings and the 1971 Kellogs Sugar Smacks promotion in PDF format.

vhs-double-boxmind-evilOriginal VHS cover and information

Originally made In colour, this exciting six-part story now exists only in black and white. But as a special bonus, the only surviving colour footage from The Mind of Evil – approximately five minutes from episode six – is included on the end of this tape!

The Doctor and Jo are investigating a revolutionary new way of treating psychotic criminals at Stangmoor Prison – a machine invented by one Professor Keller that literally sucks the evil out of a mans brain. But when the process is complete, what is left behind – a saint or a simpleton?

It transpires that Professor Keller is The Doctors arch enemy The Master. The machine actually houses a deadly mind para site The Master has taken to Earth for his own evil ends, He intends to use it to sabotage the global peace conference UNIT is policing, thus bringing Earth to the brink of war. And when he takes over the prison and hijacks a missile that could wipe out half of Europe, it seems the cards are stacked firmly in his favour. Meanwhile, the mind parasite is growing stronger all the time, killing anyone in its path by making them experience that which they fear the most.

Can the Doctor defeat both the Master and the parasite while preventing the world’s powers from embarking on all out nuclear war?

Even though it says the cover is tbc they are most likely NOT going to change it, and all that really matters is the colourised story not the cover.

The colourisation here is absolutely spectacular; a great big thanks to Stuart Humphryes, Peter Crocker and the rest of the team. Episode 1 is perfect, episodes 3-6 are very good too but episode 2 is a bit wobbly. Would like to see it on a small screen though as it may look even better.

Bit of an overlong story but some excellent scenes especially where the keller machine projects the Master’s worst fear at him and the Doctor is bombarbed with visions of past opponents courtesy of the BBC photo library….

I’d assume she is part of the making of but not a guarantee. Nicholas Courtney and Barry letts have already been confirmed (the latter is his last on camera interview) Will probably hear the full line up till later but did hear Barry letts Nicholas Courtney (both have since passed) Katy manning Terrance dicks and the person that played chinn lee was involved

Katy and Nick had commented a couple of years back that they’d seen this story in colour for the commentary.

Ep2 to 6 had colour recovery done for it back in 08 so they would have seen those episodes in colour.. episode 1 wouldn’t have been in colour but like planet of the daleks 3 they might have took an alternative take one. The regeneration box set is only 1 slot. I don’t really see how it would delay 2 slots

doubt it they dont do documentaries on colourisations. Look at invasion of the dinosaurs ep 1 got colourised and that didn’t have a documentary. It would be pointless lol

    • gordon

      February 28th, 2013 - 11:24am

Planet of the daleks got a documentary on its colurisation of ep 3. It covered colour recovery so there was hardly any point doing another documentary on dinos or ambassadors covering the same points. I doubt mind of evil will have as ep 2 to 6 would be covering the same points and Stuart said they hadn’t interviewed him. Would not suprise me if the making of would be the only documentary as most of the budget as this is a very expensive restoration

    • celestial toymaker

      March 6th, 2013 - 1:53pm

that was only a one off

    • gordon

      March 7th, 2013 - 12:50am

Yes it was a one off as the subject of colour recovery needs to be covered once only. Any more documentaries on the subject would essentially be repeating the same points. Silurians claws and time monster also had documentaries on their colour restorations so it certainly isn’t a 1 off

The Mind of Evil is an excellent 6-part story. The Master is first-rate and only UNIT would move a weapon of mass destruction whilst a world peace conference is happening. I’m so pleased that this is back to full colour. I also recall reading elsewhere that a few years back that Nick Courtney and Katy Manning confirmed that they had recorded the DVD commentary and DWM confirmed Barry Letts to doing it as well. An emotional one here then.

Off topic, but if u could make a spin off season what would u make? I would make a 8th doctor lost adventures series showing from after the events of the tv movie throw the time war and to the 8th doctor regeneration leading on to the story ‘Rose’! I think it would be an awsome idea to get people to like the 8th more and see his regeneration into the ninth doctor and to see what happened in the time war! I think it’s a great idea and I would like to hear you’r thought on this idea?and It would work because he still looks the same!Go 8th doctor!

      February 11th, 2013 - 1:03pm

It would be a great audio series but it would be better to have a proper tv series with the 8th doctor sine he only did a movie! I think it would work and RTD could wright the series for the 8th doctor series. I think it would be good if it had 8 stories a season and kept with the classic series style of having 4-6 episodes a story, since he is a classic doctor (IMO) and he should have about 5 seasons just so to get all the time to get use to the 8th doctors life time which if you do in doctor who times he did go through a time war!

    • Anonymous

      February 11th, 2013 - 1:29pm

Two little problems, the production team are stopping RTD from doing anything at the moment related to Doctor Who and also from an in-universe perspective the Time War is enough to drive a Time Lord insane, imagine what it would do to a human.

Given that it has been built up as being capable of blowing our minds (literally) if we were to see it, we would inevitably be disapointed to see it.

This is the best master story ever and unit plays so well in this story and it’s very scary and violent action packed story!defently one of the best Jon pertwee story’s or even one of the best classic who story’s! This story is going to look good in colour but also it ruins the scariness it had in black and white.hopefully there will be an option on the DVD to change it to black and white.also hopefully this DVD release will have a lot of special features!
