Character Announcement (Now Listed for Order)

Available to order from www.character-online.com

Limited edition of 5000 units

Rumours abound and what looks like possibly premature and deleted tweets about an upcoming set from Character might have lead to a rather unusual (and official) Sunday announcement of some sort of reveal this Tuesday.

We have no idea what this is but it might be worth keeping an eye on www.character-online.com and this site. We will try to bring you news if we can as soon possible.

For the record main rumours are, amongst many, (and we don’t normally get involved in this but seems pretty pointless now) a 2nd Season Tardis and figure(s) of some sort or, according twitter, a 3 pack Silurian set.

If true what has been said by Character in response to someone’s Email about lack of new series figures, Character options no longer own the license for New series merchandise, only classic.
I’m guessing this means anything from Jodies era as “contemporary” was the word used to distinguish anything before the current era on TV.

It does seem to imply that. “Nu Who” seems to cover everything from 2005 onward in regards to the television series. It’s been suggested that there are two separate licenses. They may renew it next year with the new era under RTD or might not.

I cannot think of anyone who’d want to do DW figures or could go as deep and broad as CO did. One only has to look at the state of Star Wars and their endless repaints and kitbashes – and that is considered a ‘big’ license.

If the email sent out by CO is true it’s a great shame, but it’s been a heck of a ride. Just a shame the last few years have seen the line just trudge along regarding the new series.

If it is a figure set I bet it will be 1p less than is needed for free delivery – so a sudden run will occur on the cheapest thing CO sell (again) LOL

Doesn’t it seem strange (Suspicious?) that for the last year or so it’s been leak after leak?
It feel’s like someone has dropped this info on purpose time after time. Then suddenly it’s page after page of what’s happening, what’s going on, what is it, etc. As though it’s advertising by stealth – It is I’m afraid, likely to be deliberate.

This is the new way of modern marketing. Not exclusive to CO. Even Governments do it.

If it’s a Character online exclusive, and the previous Snowmen TARDIS release is anything to go by I’m hoping for a pretty niche set. Maybe a 1st Doctor TARDIS with David Bradley variant figure?

    • pupbenny

best guess online exclusive, to early i think for B&M sets

    • TheGingyrDoctor

      February 15th, 2022 - 9:06am

Taking a look at previous years, maybe not, considering 2019 we got our figure sets in June.

  • TimelordTim

    February 14th, 2022 - 3:43pm

Doesn’t really go with the rumours, but I still hope that we get a Master’s set some day, much like the 11 and 13 Doctors sets. Would be a great way to get variations, an Ainley released in a wider circulation and the first Dhawan and Roberts sculpts. But I don’t think they’d go that far unfortunately.

Definitely still hoping for Ainley to be released in a B&M set with 5th companions someday and a Dhawan in whatever way (B&M, online, single release) is best.

    • Coleman

      February 14th, 2022 - 4:09pm

It’s definitely a possibility in an online Exclusive Tim.
Don’t know how many Exclusives a year CO will do though, probably just one, but maybe Two if we’re lucky.
(Depends on how well they sell).

    • NickD

      February 14th, 2022 - 8:04pm

Character Options now only have the license to make Classic Doctor Who figures from 1963-1989, 1996. 🙁

    • TimelordTim

      February 14th, 2022 - 8:56pm

Where did you hear/read/learn that NickD?

    • Lewis frisby

      February 14th, 2022 - 10:16pm

They also have the licence to make figures from the big finish audio’s remember this sets in 2019

    • TimelordTim

      February 14th, 2022 - 10:33pm

They made Big Finish sets in 2019, but they also made Nu Who sets in 2020. I thought the licensing would be for Doctor Who as a whole, not specific eras (but I don’t know much about these things).

So would be interesting to know the source of NickD’s thought as it would be a new, sudden and strange development for CO.

Generally, as it stands, I think CO have the license to all of Doctor Who, but we get less Nu Who sets recently because they are less popular at the moment and/or need more new tooling to create. Hopefully we do get a Dhawan Master and Fugitive Doctor if nothing else.

    • Bobsuruncle

      February 14th, 2022 - 11:36pm

There’s been screenshots on Instagram of emails from Character stating they no longer have the license to make new who figures. Hopefully they can reaquire it

    • Independently Cross

      February 15th, 2022 - 1:41am

Supposedly, unless the message seemingly from Character suggesting this was mistaken, the current licence now only covers “classics”. But that’s a very vague and nebulous term that’ll be distinguished as one thing to some and another to others. When the same terminology was used to apply to Big Finish, it simply meant everything up to the current on screen Doctor, so it’s not very clear at all. Obviously a change, though, as the licence certainly covered up to the second series of the Thirteenth Doctor until last year.

  • Martino

    February 14th, 2022 - 3:27pm

My collection keeps growing and shrinking, to the benefit or expense of other collections, but with the two Classic 2nd Doctor TARDISes recently exciting me beyond measure, I’ve decide to focus purely on the first four incarnations now. Fingers crossed! Extremely curious about what Al will do with the ‘Genesis’ History of the Daleks set – if they don’t skip that story.

    • Doug Who

      February 14th, 2022 - 8:41pm

I wondered if they might do a ‘Genesis’ set featuring Davros and a Dalek? He is, after all, a big part of their history.

Would be apt for this story and there isn’t a great deal of difference between the Daleks in this story unlike others, although they might do another ‘army building’ set!

All those versions of Davros they released years ago could do with a dust down for those that missed them.

Looking forward to the announcement tomorrow!

Please be a Ruth figure, or an Ainley Master.

    • Dalekz

      February 14th, 2022 - 4:01pm

Yes the Ainley Master is hard to find now at a good price and they have the mould so that’s an easy make for them I’d love one of those, Th Ruth Doctor is a Doctor figure so they should do her because she belongs along side the others.

    • Popplewick

      February 14th, 2022 - 8:58pm

      I’d take a Valeyard figure first….

  • Gareth Pugh

    February 14th, 2022 - 11:53am

If it really is a Season 2 Tardis set, then I could see it being maybe a reissue of the recent B&M First Doctor Tardis maybe with a First Doctor Variant with cost and the hat painted white (and a bit of silver detailing on the chest perhaps) to make a Web Planet set? Personally I’m hoping for a Silurian set but we’ll see!

  • Mark Belsom

    February 14th, 2022 - 11:23am

I should think these sets will be from classic doctor who as most of the figures from season 11, 12 and 13 don’t really sell that well, shops can’t afford to have peg warmers that sit there for months.

    • Dalekz

      February 14th, 2022 - 11:37am

I think a Modern Jodie Cyberman and drone Dalek would sell just fine

    • Coleman

      February 14th, 2022 - 12:55pm

Yes, Dalekz, I think Nu Who Daleks or Cybermen will sell, they always seem to be the Exception.

    • TimelordTim

      February 14th, 2022 - 1:29pm

The Resolution Dalek sat around for quite some time though, eventually being sold off by Argos for as little as £4.50.

Like you, I would’ve thought Nu Who Daleks (and Cybermen, Sontarans, Master, Fugitive Doctor) should sell well, but that didn’t seem to happen with the Resolution Dalek so we may be waiting a while for more Nu Who unfortunately.

    • The Outcast

      February 14th, 2022 - 3:08pm

I have a feeling the Recon Scout sat around because it’s really a one off design. If they made the Defence Drones, I don’t think they’d stick around as much because more people would buy multiple, myself included. Though that’s just my speculation.

I’d like to see the Fugitive Doctor, and the 13th Doctor era Sea Devils, Cybermen and Sontarans, as well as the aforementioned Defence Drones. Dan and Sacha Dhawan’s Master would be very simple to make and I hope they’ll end up in B&M sets eventually, because I’d certain love figures of both. Hopefully we can eventually get some of those, because they’re either nice designs or characters I’d consider it essential to make, and there’s not really any excuse for those last to because they really just require a singular new head each.

I hope we can get some of these characters in the figure line at some stage. If the history of the Daleks sets go on long enough, I imagine we’d get the Defence Drones then, but that’s like a decade off, if the line even survives till then.

    • Dalekz

      February 14th, 2022 - 3:59pm

It’s a shame we also didn’t get the 11th 12th Doctor era Cybermen too.
I think those Cybermen and the 13th era ones would sell along with the Dalek drones, I agree the Retcon version is a weird one off and a bit marmite for fans but figures that can be used for army building are popular as you need more than one.
A Fugitive Doctor and Dhawan’s Master are a must for me because they made such an impact and it would be a shame to never have them along side the others.

    • EndlessTimelord

      February 14th, 2022 - 4:40pm

I have a feeling that whole wave sat on the shelves because they came out literally as the world locked down. I didn’t pick them up till the Summer purely because I was out of work and it wasn’t on my mind. Don’t think anyone can make fair judgment on how that wave sold considering covid definitely impacted it!

    • David

      February 14th, 2022 - 9:08pm

“Peg warmers that sit there for months”.
That’s what killed off the New Series range – series 5 figures were boring. I remember my local Toys R Us still having them on the shelf a year later.
Sadly that killed off the classic range as well I reckon.
At least we now have that back to a degree… 🙂

  • bryan

    February 14th, 2022 - 10:49am

Not one to fuel mutterings, but as it says in the banner its a bit late now.

So having mused this over . I really can not think what a 2nd series TARDIS would be. But if the Stats proove people dont buy female figures ( see my shelf and say that) Then wonder. A DARDIS with Barbara and Ian. Thats from the secobd series. Would be perfect for an online exclusive.

Silurian. Since there are NO classic series ones, then A sea Devil, a new series one with removable face and 1 new tooled figure ( original) . I would so love a new series Sea Devil just in time for easter, along with new series Silurians.

We have been spoiled of late with a whole heap of new figures . Love the new Giant Robot ,and the Tom Scupts just keep getting better.

    • Dalekz

      February 14th, 2022 - 11:44am

I have more female figures than male, it’s just the way my collection has developed not just Doctor Who but other stuff.
I can’t imagine what another Tardis would be either but I bet it’s just another repaint from whatever episode where the Tardis door was slightly wrong or the window was broken or something.

  • Euan Bird

    February 14th, 2022 - 10:24am

I really hope we get some sort of set from Flux. I know the New Series sets aren’t that popular, but it is disappointing that we hardly get any. If we did get a Flux Set, I kind of hope we get two. One set containing Dan, Karvanista and Vinder, and the other set containing Swarm, Azure and a Sontaran.

    • Doctor Stu

      February 14th, 2022 - 11:12am

They’d probably find that if they actually released any, they probably would be popular. Sontarans, cybermen, swarm, azure, the master, Karvanista, Dan, Ruth, daleks, Tim Shaw, kerblam man, skithra, thajarian or whatever it was called.

    • booboo

      February 14th, 2022 - 11:51am

you never know, they might have pitched these at the toy fair (because that’s partly what its for) and if Argos and numerous other retailers said yes will buy 20k of each figure between us then you might actually get them.

    • Coleman

      February 14th, 2022 - 11:37am

I’m 100% certain it won’t be a Nu Who set as most Collectors that buy these figures in force are middle aged (like me). Probably will be a “Classic” Silurian 3 pack that as been mentioned.
But Euan, that’s a fantastic couple of sets, I think should definitely be made in an online Exclusive.
      Hope your reading this Al.

  • TheGingyrDoctor

    February 14th, 2022 - 8:24am

I’m thinking that it could be a second planet of the Daleks set, maybe a chase or Web planet TARDIS, or a Time Meddler TARDIS. The silurian 3 pack could have two silurians and a Liz Shaw.

    • Philip Shaw

      February 14th, 2022 - 8:30am

I imagine a planet of the Daleks set, like the Jungles of Mechanus with Supreme and invisible Dalek…

    • Philip Shaw

      February 14th, 2022 - 9:23am

But which Silurians? Could be ‘Warriors on the Cheap’ versions with a Tegan, or Dr 5 in overalls.

    • Philip Shaw

      February 14th, 2022 - 10:21am

If it is a 2nd season TARDIS set I don’t think his outfit changes much…

    • Philip Shaw

      February 14th, 2022 - 10:23am

…except The Web planet and the Crusade

    • the ergon

      February 14th, 2022 - 10:32am

It would have to be something special like ‘The Web Planet’ look and an electronic sound TARDIS to tempt me phillip with chesterton or Vicki as companion. If its just generic Doctor from previous waves again with minor differences i won,t be buying.

    • Philip Shaw

      February 14th, 2022 - 10:46am

It could also be Dr 7 sound TARDIS reissue from Fenric.

    • Erato

      February 14th, 2022 - 5:26pm

He wears a shirt, waistcoat and long cloak in Planet of Giants.

    • David

      February 14th, 2022 - 9:13pm

      Noooo. Don’t go there.
As much as I’d like a Liz Shaw, I’d prefer a set of silurians as opposed to a “The silurians” set.
70’s silurian. 80’s silurian and yes, if we have to, a new series silurian.
That’s got to be better than 2 identical (or almost identical) figures again, which is what was wrong with the Earthshock set. the Marinus set and the sensorites set. I guess we should be glad there weren’t two Raston Robots in the “Five Doctors”….

    • The ergon

      February 14th, 2022 - 10:10pm

In the case of the earthshock set, they could get away with it as there were 2 androids anyway but we didnt really need another 5th in similar outfit.

    • Philip Shaw

      February 14th, 2022 - 10:21pm

I imagine that Dr 6 and TARDIS set would be an online exclusive as they have said the figure paint job would be too expensive for a normal release.

  • Philip Ward

    February 14th, 2022 - 6:37am

    Web Planet set

GIMME a Hartnell TARDIS. Not willing to pay £60+ on ebay (and even those have dried up).

    • Century 22 Productions

      February 13th, 2022 - 10:21pm

Why has the B&M Hartnell TARDIS been so expensive on Ebay? Is it because the electronic one from 2010 is so hard to find too?

    • AC

      February 13th, 2022 - 11:03pm

Low volume, high demand. It’s as simple as that.

Rumour has it that it was produced in significantly lower quantities that previous releases.
Lower numbers in shops, poor/patchy distribution and the only 1st Doctor box since the Forbidden Planet original.

It’s made for the worst combination; people’s desire to get one has pushed up secondary prices, clearly the demand still exists but with the supply side slowing, the scarcity is growing ever greater and prices will move ever closer to the vicinity of the Forbidden Planet boxes.

Of course, if a second version is released it may alleviate some of the pressure. If they try it with an exclusive figure e.g. a companion in the form of Susan, all bets will be off. The sets will be sought for the figure primarily, depending on quantity, the game will begin again.

    • Century 22 Productions

      February 14th, 2022 - 10:05am

That’s very interesting thank you AC

Dalek from New Year special with new gun and arm maybe?

  • Mark Belsom

    February 13th, 2022 - 7:48pm

I hope it’s a three figure set, haven’t any space left for another Tardis.

    • Coleman

      February 13th, 2022 - 7:54pm

Agree Mark, I hope more than anything it’s the Silurian Threepack (with new Tooling would be great). Make the most of these online Exclusives, If it’s the only way to get Totally New figures.
If it “another” TARDIS, I’m out.
Sorry guys, Twenty TARDIS is enough for anyone. LoL.

    • Paul Armstrong

      February 13th, 2022 - 8:14pm

Agreed Coleman. The only reason I didn’t buy the Snowmen set was because I simply don’t need yet another TARDIS, and 30 notes was a lot for essentially one figure.

    • The ergon

      February 13th, 2022 - 8:14pm

Move one standard TARDIS out and get the electronic sounding one in. Save the figure ditch the tardis. Will my suggestion mean a tsunami of TARDIS’ going to ebay to create space.

    • Coleman

      February 13th, 2022 - 8:17pm

Ergon, Didn’t we just get an Electronic TARDIS at the end of last year with this same CO Online Exclusive?

    • The ergon

      February 13th, 2022 - 8:27pm

Depends what the season two looks like. Id have one electronic per doctor if it was to include a completely original outfit for the doctor or/ and new companion. If im honest thoughid much prefer an original 3 pack any day.

  • pupbenny

    February 13th, 2022 - 6:55pm

So, out of curiousity, what would be to note regarding a second season TARDIS set in comparison to the other TARDIS’ we’ve got? I’m curious as I’m not too familiar with that season.

I’d have liked a Tenth Planet TARDIS and First Doctor Set, so I’m curious what a second season TARDIS set would be. 🙂

Btw, if the Silurian set rumours come from Twitter, where do the TARDIS rumours come from?

Some people on social media predict things which turn out to be true, unknown if its luck or inside info but judging that last few years i would say the latter… far to much has leaked for my liking…

  • Judooning

    February 13th, 2022 - 6:54pm

If its the Silurian set, my guess would be 2 standard Silurians from Warriors of the Deep with alternate paint apps, and a Sea Devil from the same episode. Which would be fitting considering what the next new series episode is about.
I wonder if the sculpt for them would be brand new and could be used for other monster sculpts with wrap arounds etc.

  • TimelordTim

    February 13th, 2022 - 6:39pm

Interesting! Looking forward to Tuesday, fingers crossed for the Silurians but will be nice to see whatever it is.

      February 13th, 2022 - 6:51pm

If its 2nd season electronic TARDIS ill buy and sell the other first TARDIS, hopefully not just with first doctor. Susan maybe?. I,d love that silurian set more.

    • Coleman

      February 13th, 2022 - 6:55pm

Would you be tempted with a Silurian 3 pack Tim?
Only downer will be the Price, I’m expecting £40 for just one pack, especially if new Tooling is going to be used.

    • The ergon

      February 13th, 2022 - 7:52pm

It would be just your luck to start that foamasi and a double pack come out coleman.

    • Coleman

      Ah,ah yes ergon. Very Good.

    • Coleman

      February 13th, 2022 - 8:02pm

I see were your coming from ergon, Guess what figure Robert Harrops are making next. LoL.

    • TimelordTim

      February 13th, 2022 - 8:14pm

If they look good (as I’m sure they would) I would jump at a Silurian 3-pack Coleman.

Having decided against the Robot set (spent the £20 on 6 Harlequin models to paint instead, including a Robot!), bypassing the 5 Doctors and Earthshock sets, and now only getting Sensorites and Voord sets now they are reduced I think I’d be happy to spend more this time on such a different set (if true).

I wouldn’t bother with a TARDIS set though, even if it was a companion included instead of the Doctor.
