B&M 2021 First Doctor and TARDIS Set

Character Options is excited to announce a next wave of Doctor Who action figure sets for 2021 with five new lines scheduled to arrive in B&M stores in Mid-October.

The line-up will introduce two more action figure three packs, two further ‘History of the Daleks’ sets, plus a rather splendid “Doctor & TARDIS” set. This new wave includes highly detailed and decorated 5.5 inch scale figures with multiple points of articulation all of which come packaged in the familiar ‘heritage’ style Doctor Who collector packs with specially created insert artwork. Once again these Limited Edition figure sets all bring something fresh to the range be it the characters themselves or variants never released before.

In this story, upon entering an old Junkyard in Totters Lane, Shoreditch in a bid to locate a wayward pupil of theirs, schoolteachers Ian and Barbara encounter a mysterious stranger called the Doctor and his unworldly Time and Space machine TARDIS. The set features the First Doctor figure in his closed jacket and scarf plus the TARDIS. The TARDIS is also presented for the first time with a more correct ‘Brachacki’ style taller roof and Fresnel lamp of Season 1 plus additional ‘drip bars’ on the lower windows.

Al Dewar Character Options’ Creative Director said: “I think it is safe to say this swathe of releases is very different from the first release and features some truly unique characters and ‘Big hitters’. This line up represents some of the finest episodes of the Fifth Doctor, Cyber Androids with interchangeable ‘attack’ hands, a Raston Warrior Robot and a new First Doctors TARDIS that’s not just a repaint! In the Daleks sets we have also delivered something new for fans again with some truly nefarious Daleks and the first real ‘army builder’ set. We hope that our fans and followers enjoy them!”

Seems to be a general concensus from next week, but nothing official.

This TARDIS would actually be a pretty close match for how it looks in the opening shot of The War Machines I think. Well maybe not the roof perhaps. And plus I just checked and actually in that same scene, from one cut to another, the window frames turn from white to blue LOL. The chamelion circuit was haywire in those days.

I was just thinking, I wonder if this set is an indication of next year’s online exclusive if they do one. An Electronic TARDIS and First Doctor from The Tenth Planet would be a good choice, they’re get to re-use this TARDIS roof (like how they got to re-use the Second Doctor one from the War Games set) and have the Doctor with the cape, etc, except in the outfit colours that matches his final story.

I wonder if that’d be big enough of a change.

But the thing is, the Tardis from that story was already second’s Tardis. It had the flat roof with the four corner posts.

But they could do an electronic version from something like The Chase as the tardis was used quite frequently in that story. Or maybe we get a Third Doctor Tardis from the Green Death? An electronic version would double up as the bracknaki mark 2.

      November 3rd, 2021 - 4:25pm

They could do a Tenth Planet TARDIS by reworking the Abominable Snowmen TARDIS with the telephone panel put back on the left-hand door! That said, the flat-roofed version has never been completely accurate, it needs to have the roof raised a little more with that slight gap on the front side!

Maybe if they teaked it properly, we could have a Twice upon a Time/Fugitive of the Judoon Tardis. That would be a cool collectable as they’d only have to tweak first to make him look like David Bradley. Then they could re-release it as an online special with a new Ruth figure! It would be a lot just to make the figure though.

What TARDIS Variations can they do next?
Dr 7 with Pink TARDIS from Happiness patrol, 2nd Dr White TARDIS from The Mind Robber. War Dr and Battered TARDIS from Day of the Doctor.

They have ruled out Dr 6 for reasons of costing too much for the painting of his figure, perhaps a Mark of the Rani miners coat version. Dr 5 and Harlequin would be nice, but please no more standard Dr 5 figures, only so many variants you can do when he only had one minor cricket outfit change in his run, barring the waistcoat in Planet of Fire. Bad wolf TARDIS and Clara tribute possibly if they continue into New Who.

    • TimelordTim

      October 14th, 2021 - 2:42pm

If they can’t do 6th in the budget range because of the detailed painting required then a Clara memorial TARDIS is unlikely, unless as an online exclusive. Pink, white and even black/white variations all possible though and wouldn’t require anything extravagant.

    • pupbenny

      October 14th, 2021 - 8:31pm

A problem with the War Doctor one would be the new tooling for the different lamp. It’s pretty much the same as the lamp on the TARDIS from the 4th Doctor regenerated set, from what I can tell, but I don’t know how easy it would be for them to swap the new series lamp for that one.
Of course, they might not see the need to be *that* accurate with it, especially for a change not a lot of people would probably notice.

Could they not do the 6th Doctor in a blue coat variant?

    • Rob

      October 17th, 2021 - 7:09pm

Surely they can do the 7th’s again, but this time with the new thinner base, since that colour was amazing. Plus a 6th is possible but perhaps dropping the figure for it, although I’m not sure how different 6’s is to 5’s or 7’s apart from colour.

An 8th is a must, with this new 1st having a new roof and lamp, that’s basically all 8’s needs. But for War or any other 9 – 12, I don’t think the bigger mold is ever going to return, due to price, or it would have to be £20 or more and no figure, to turn up at B&M.

      October 17th, 2021 - 7:43pm

If the did the white Mind Robber Police Box I wonder how difficult it would be to mayve include it with a White Robot and maybe Zoe in her sparkling outfit. There’s rather a lot in The Mind Robber that’s figure worthy.

    • the ergon

      October 17th, 2021 - 8:23pm

They dont have to drop the 6th doctor figure if hes in the the waistcoat from The Two Doctors or his blue Mourning cape from Revelation.

    • the ergon

      October 17th, 2021 - 9:30pm

Its probably easier with humans or humanoid shapes for wraparounds and the odd new head sculpt. I,m not sure if the budget would stretch that far popplewick, for a new one off figure they might not beable to reuse for the B And M Who collection.

Definitely want the First Doctor and the TARDIS set. With these waves of figures, I’ve only managed to find the Ian and Voord sets, so made sure to pick one up. None of the sets are in any of my local stores sadly and I refuse to buy from scalpers on ebay.

Bit of an odd question but, how’s the sellotape placed when the TARDIS is packaged in the box? Because in my copy of the War Games TARDIS set, the sellotape was placed, round & into them, that the doors were warped. (Sorry if it was unclear)

its not the sellotape its missing a thin strip of plastic at base that stops doors opening outwards so instead of closing flush they bow outwards easy fix but nothing to do with selotaping them

Not sure I agree with you there… The War Games, Peladon and Visitation TARDISes are still quite reasonable at £25-35, and you can get the electronic Second Doctor TARDIS from Abominable Snowmen for between £45-50. It was £39.99 to buy new from CO only a few months ago.

    • pupbenny

      October 7th, 2021 - 1:35pm

@Erato Very true, but I’d guess this 1st Doctor’s TARDIS will be more in the league of the Shada TARDIS, in terms of desirability, which frequently sells for close to £100. (Not that the Abominable Snowman set wasn’t desirable but it was available online so anyone that wanted it could’ve/would’ve got one so the price is probably going to remain relatively low for a bit with that one.)

    • Rex Farrel

      October 7th, 2021 - 11:40pm

The Shada Tardis is only expensive now – ebay prices at the time of release were often around £30-35, £40 if you were unlucky. It actually seemed to be the slowest seller until recently, so it’s probably desperate punters buying them who passed on them for too long. You just need to follow the ebay patterns, checking completed listings, etc. I’m sure you’ll get one for a fair price if you time it right.

    October 6th, 2021 - 7:24pm

Just noticed that the white sign on this TARDIS is inaccurate. It should be in a ‘times new Roman’ style font rather than an ‘arial’ font. Even the old Uber rare electronic 1st doctor TARDIS got that one right! So annoying!

The bit that surprises me is that they never marketed it as ‘The Aztecs’ TARDIS instead of An Unearthly Child, mainly because it’s completely accurate to that episode more or less, the St.John’s logo in that has faded badly, the window bottoms are accurate to it too as is the roof, plus wouldn’t have had to change the First Doctor figure at all (apart from removing his scarf)

This is slightly strange to me because they did An Unearthly Child set years ago with a different looking Doctor and TARDIS. I assumed this was just like from elsewhere during his era, with the TARDIS looking way more tattered than in the previous version, so I’m suprised to read it’s from the same story!

What’s the deal with this? Is this one more accurate or something? Is it from the unreelased pilot that they filmed? (I don’t think so judging by Hartnell’s outfit? No tie.)

Either way I think it looks really nice! Just curious about the story of it. 🙂

The roof for one is more accurate as the original first doctor tardis just used the original 80s tardis mould. Also the base is thinner, the saint John’s ambulance sticker is damaged compared to the pristine original one. And finally hasn’t got the green weathering on it and the bottoms of the windows are different. As for the doctor no idea where he comes from in the story maybe he looks like that in the cave of skulls??

    • Philip shaw

      October 1st, 2021 - 11:07pm

Read somewhere that the St John’s logo couldn’t be used anymore so perhaps that’s why it’s only partially seen. Checked the episode TARDIS pics and it’s complete on them.

    • pupbenny

      October 2nd, 2021 - 12:19am

Yeah, I checked the episode too and the logo seemed to be completely there very clearly. I know it did get worn out throughout his era though, so I figured it was from later on, so it’s just strange to me that it’s meant to be from the pilot. Maybe it’s like you said because of the copyright thing, or whatever the issue was that they couldn’t use it anymore.

They’ve genuinely done a terrific job with the TARDIS though, I was just comparing it with a famous image that I’m sure is what they used as reference of the actual one because it looks exactly the same! They really put in a lot of effort to get so many details right with this model and it’s really looks great! 🙂

    • pupbenny

      October 2nd, 2021 - 12:22am

Probably only thing I would say is I’d be tempted to shade the windows black/grey. Maybe? Not sure. A lot of the pictures I’m looking at have it with black/grey windows instead of white/clear. (Not that it matters, just interesting to note. 🙂 )

      October 2nd, 2021 - 11:40am
