Big Finish UNIT: Brave New World 1

The Brigadier is back! But probably not the one you were expecting. As revealed in Doctor Who Magazine issue 573, Angela Bruce, who made her Doctor Who debut in the 1989 TV adventure, Battlefield, will don camo gear once more for a new series of audio adventures, due to begin in June 2022.

Expect heroics, high stakes and havoc across the globe – and beyond – as the ever-resourceful Brigadier Bambera assembles her new team, including sarcastic second-in-command, Sergeant Jean-Paul Savarin (Alex Jordan) and tough scientific advisor, Dr Louise Rix (Yemisi Oyinloye).

UNIT – Brave New World: Volume 1 is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition box set (3CD + download) at £19.99 or on download only at £16.99, exclusively here.

The three action-packed new stories are:

  • Rogue State by Robert Valentine
  • Time Flies by Alison Winter
  • Dark Side of the Moon by Alfie Shaw

Angela Bruce said: “If I wasn’t Brigadier Bambera as she is now in this wonderful box set, I’d marry her. I would. I’d marry her. I find her irresistible. Within one character, you get to have all the control and all the power that you have ever desired. I feel deep joy in bringing her back.

“It’s really nice being thought of. It’s really nice that Big Finish have thought, ‘Brigadier Bambera, we haven’t heard anything from her for a while.’ And you go, ‘Oh really, you’d like to hear from me? You’d like to write something for Brigadier Bambera?’ YES! Bring. Her. On.

“You’re meeting Bambera – and me – at a time when I’m full. Bambera’s happy in her own skin. And so am I. So this is the right time to meet her again. I think fans will love these new UNIT adventures. It’s brought that hunger back in me. Brigadier Bambera’s getting stronger every day.”

Producer Emily Cook added: “Brigadier Bambera is back! A series of UNIT adventures led by Bambera is something I know many fans have been anticipating for a long time. (Rightly so – it’s an obviously brilliant thing to do.) And finally, here we go!

“This is a distinct new era for UNIT. Brave New World is set in the late 1990s. The Cold War is over, the geopolitical landscape is in flux and the Millennium is fast approaching. Brigadier Bambera is deemed the right candidate to lead UNIT into the 21st century. But in this brave new world, the stakes are higher than ever…

“It’s been incredible fun developing this series and exploring Bambera’s life beyond Battlefield. Like Bambera, Angela herself is a phenomenal character to work with. We’ve had the most wonderful, lively days in studios. It’s so thrilling to see Bambera in action again. And that’s the joy of Big Finish. These brilliant characters get the spotlight they deserve!”

UNIT – Brave New World: Volume 1 (title TBA) is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition box set (3CD + download) at £19.99 or on download only at £16.99, exclusively from the Big Finish website.

Volume 2 (title TBA) is due for release in November 2022. Big Finish listeners can save money by pre-ordering both volumes together in a bundle for just £38 (on collector’s edition CD + download) or £33 (download only).

All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.

Please note that Big Finish is currently operating a digital-first release schedule. The mail-out of collector’s edition CDs may be delayed due to factors beyond our control, but all purchases of this release unlock a digital copy that can be immediately downloaded or played on the Big Finish app from the release date.

I remember seeing her in many Tv shows and films. Two notable TV performances being Cursed by a voodoo Doll called charley Boy in Hammer House of Horror and as Councillor ‘Bleeding’ Murray in Only Fools. She was one of the few things i liked about Battlefield but is still one of my least favourite mccoy stories. I may give this a whirl. What other Big Finish stories as Bambera has she done?, I probably have a story tucked away amongst my vast Big Finish collection.

Yes. i,ve got that one Phillip. what could have been part of mccoys season 27. Might relisten some of those this year. Crime of the century, Earth aid and thin ice were good stories as well. The potential for a great season that could have kickstarted the nineties in a completely new direction. I first heard about these on one of those docs about the missing season and Big Finish, i forget the title, but i think it was on the survival DVD?

It’s always that unknown quantity of ‘what might have been’ isn’t it? I remember that fantastic issue of Doctor Who Magazine, co-edited by Sophie Aldred I think, that featured loads of articles on what might have happened in the 27th series and beyond. Enjoyed the DVD documentary too Ergon.

As I recall that’s where the titles like ‘Earth Aid’ became established and Andrew Cartmel didn’t like them! but felt they had to be used.

I enjoyed the Big Finish ‘Lost Stories’ season a lot. I do wonder what would have happened if original ‘Who’ had got one more series and Sylvester had left at the end. A cliffhanger regeneration or just an end similar to ‘Survival’?

Well the tv movie certainly would have been different had he regenerated cliffhanger style then doug and we would have been spared the gurning.

      Ha! Yes perhaps we would!

I remember the DWM article speculated that Richard Griffiths would have been the Eighth Doctor who was, I believe, also the first choice for the Fifth. Personally I would have much preferred him to Peter Davison, who in my opinion was just too weak a characterisation and more often that not pretty contemptuous towards his companions. All that high-pitched squabbling and po-faced earnestness was the beginning of the end for me!

Vast improvement in the 21st series though (in the Doctor at least) and in Big Finish of course.

And about time too! Don’t buy everything from Big Finish but this one is a must. Loved Angela Bruce in ‘Battlefield’.

I wish Brigadier Bambera had made an appearance in the new series. Shame!
