Big Finish The Year of Martha Jones 01

Available to order from www.forbiddenplanet.com

Counselor Troi meets Martha Jones!

She’s swapping the Enterprise for Earth this winter – Marina Sirtis joins Freema Agyeman and Adjoa Andoh alongside a cast of TV legends in The Year of Martha Jones from Big Finish Productions.

Cover artwork is revealed for this brand-new box set of full-cast audio adventures from the worlds of Doctor Who, due for release in December 2021, featuring stars of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Game of Thrones, Alien and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

The Year of Martha Jones finds the Tenth Doctor’s companion returning for three new stories of her own, exploring the year she spent travelling the Earth, warning humanity about the Master and spreading hope with tales of her friend, the Doctor.

The Year of Martha Jones is available to pre-order as a collector’s edition CD box set (at £19.99) or digital download (at £16.99), at www.bigfinish.com.

Best known to sci-fi fans as Counselor Deanna Troi in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Marina Sirtis makes her Big Finish debut as Martha’s friend. Karen, in opening episode The Last Diner.

Of becoming part of the world of Doctor Who, Marina Sirtis said: “When people ask me who my first Doctor was, it was the First Doctor. As an actor, I’m all about performances, and Doctor Who has always employed fine actors – it’s a very unique and special show.

“And this box set tells us that stories are important, which is why they last – they are handed down from generation to generation, and are what give our imaginations flight.”

In the third episode Deceived, listeners meet agent of the Master, Mr Strand, played by Game of Thrones actor, Gethin Anthony. Of recording, he said: “This has just been the most fun – the feeling of adventure and escapism and imagination that you can get through voice performance is amazing.

“The scale of the stories you can get to tell in a very efficient amount of time, in which you can go anywhere in the universe (as we tend to do) – it always reconnects me with why you get into this crazy path in life in the first place. It’s like playing dress up, but with your voice.”

Legendary voice artist Lorelei King (Alien: Covenant) is returning to Big Finish to play resistance leader Jessie Grant. She said: “I love my character – she really is a very maternal character, in that she is making sure that everyone is okay. She has her private reasons for this that we learn, and although she has a hard exterior, it’s a hard world!

“And this was so much fun – it’s got all the survivalist elements which I really like!”

And returning to the Whoniverse after appearing on Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures, actor Julie Graham plays Miss Beecham, an ambitious and efficient agent of the Master. She said: “I love the whole Doctor Who franchise – it’s just such a national treasure, it’s part of our Britishness and it’s just lovely to be a part of it in any way whatsoever. And what’s lovely about doing audio is that there’s no pressure, and you can really play with it and go for it.”

The Year of Martha Jones is available to pre-order as a collector’s edition CD (at £19.99) or digital download (at £16.99), exclusively from the Big Finish Website.

Big Finish is currently operating a digital-first release schedule. The mail-out of collector’s edition CDs may be delayed due to factors beyond our control, but all purchases of this release unlock a digital copy that can be immediately downloaded or played on the Big Finish app from the release date.

Erm, does anyone else think that “Jessie Grant” may be a relative of Jo Grant?

    Same initials, same surname…

    Could be a possibility…

Of course I know Marina from Star Trek but I must admit It was interesting
watching her in one of the Death wish films.

I think I know which you are talking about coleman, wasn,t it Death wish 3? involving a controversial scene The last one directed by Michael Winner and one produced by the mostly dreadful Cannon films. Cannon fodder i called them.

Yes you’ve got it ergon, the controversial scene from Death Wish 3.
Used to love watching that genre of films such as Death Wish, Dirty Harry, and action films with Arnie, Stallone, Van dam, Seagal and Willis.
Don’t want them much now but in late teens and early twenties I thought they were great.

Over the moon about this, Freema is such a talent and Dissected is the best Torchwood audio I’ve listened to so far, highly recommend. Would still love her to a Tenth Doctor Adventures boxset with David, maybe someday.

Oooh, interesting. Added to “the list”.

I wonder if this compliments the BBC book “The Story of Martha”, which was also a collection of linked adventures set in the year that never was, or if this ignores those stories (hopefully it wont contradict them).

So glad to be getting this and exploring Martha’s year away from the Doctor! She’s my favorite of 10’s companions, so this will be a must for me.

How about a few adventures with 10th post the Doctors daughter and prior her relationship with Mickey. I would have included Mickey but then they would have to recast Noel Clarkes part and that wouldn,t interest me. And we can,t have Noel… Well you know.

She never went on adventures with Ten after the Doctors Daughter though.

I think they could get away with more 10, Donna and Martha stories set after the doctors daughter but before turn left, I’d love to see this trio again!!

His incarnation could easily be taken out of time and reunited with martha.

She never went on any official adventures with him on screen though. She had to go to the doctors daughter episode against her will, and then at the end of that she leaves officially again until stolen earth. They don’t go off any in the meantime so there’s nothing to squeeze into that gap. Sure you could do one of the many, many, many, examples of Doctor being taken out of time, meeting an old companion and then they both forget it all episodes. But for any standard adventures like the Donna boxset or the one with Rose and Ten. There’s nowhere in series 4 to squeeze her in. It would have to be post Doctor at UNIT, year that never was, or during series 3

I rather enjoy these slot in adventures some more so than the ones with the continuation/standalones. The dimension cannon and The Lone centurion are good examples of this .As long as its relevant and they don,t start including inconsequential characters and scenarios, I,m happy to buy these. The one continuation boxset i would love as a release is The adventures of Clara and Me if it is logistically possible to get Jenna and Maisie back together. That could be some time as both are both ubiquitous and extremely busy actresses.

Another two on my Big finish list for preorder 2022 are: Out of Time 3: ‘Wink’ with 10th and 6th. Should be some good bantering there and Weeping Angels. See what they did there. Also 10th and classic companions with stories featuring k-9, Leela, Nyssa and Ace. that sounds like my thing.

Finally! Great to see Freema back at Big Finsh – the potential is endless with her – further adventures with Ten and Torchwood, exploring her time with UNIT, and her “freelance” career post-UNIT with Mickey..although due to recent events they may avoid that area.

Also, so could reprise Martha’s cousin Adeola in a Torchwood One set..?

Brilliant. Martha was a very good companion, underrated certainly. The second half of season 3 is one of the best periods of the show for me. So I’m happy to have more Martha and a Big Finish set that sits nicely with the on-screen canon. Looking forward to this.

It is a brilliant story Ergon, alongside Blink it was a very strong few episodes and I thought the Master 3-parter was excellent as well. I think those 6 episodes are when I went from a casual watcher of the series to a fully absorbed fan of the show!

The novel was more a linking device for short stories featuring the Doctor and Martha. We’ve not really seen her time alone on much depth.

There is a set of 4 stories, linked to Martha’s time wandering the Earth.

      The Stories of Martha
      The Weeping David Roden
Breathing Space Steve Lockley & Paul Lewis
      The Frozen Wastes Robert Sherman
      Star Crossed by Simon Jowett

All read by Freyma in Audiobook downloads The stories she told Without the Doctor , but about the Doctor. The 2 disc. version was the framing story with the Doctor. But these downloads are Her telling her own tales. They are brilliant, and more of them is something We would never get.

      A lovely Christmas pressie

Looking forward to this set and a great idea to fill this ‘gap’.

I think Martha was a very underrated companion in the revived series. Great to see (or hear at least) Freema Agyeman back in ‘Who’.

I don’t get everything Big Finish release, but will definitely buy this one.
