Big Finish The Ninth Doctor Adventures 2.3 Hidden Depths

Available to order from www.bigfinish.com

Liv and Tania’s Love Story Continues!

The Ninth Doctor runs into his former companions in The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Hidden Depths, due for release in November 2022 by Big Finish Productions.

The multi-award-winning Christopher Eccleston is back as the Ninth incarnation of the Time Lord in an action-packed box set of three full-cast audio dramas.

In the third adventure, Flatpack, Nicola Walker and Rebecca Root return as Liv Chenka and Tania Bell – most recently heard in the Eighth Doctor Adventures series, Stranded – now happily living together in London. While shopping, the couple run into the newly-regenerated Ninth Doctor as he’s investigating something strange.

Christopher Eccleston said: “One of the perks of this job is seeing the calibre of actors who step through the door every day, and on Flatpack we had both Nicola and Rebecca – two people we’ve all enjoyed watching on so many fantastic TV shows in recent years. They both provided great characters to play off, and I especially enjoyed exploring the Doctor’s loneliness through Liv’s point of view.”

Doctor Who – The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Hidden Depths is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition 4-disc CD box set (+ download for just £24.99) or a digital download only (for just £19.99) from www.bigfinish.com.

Sometimes things lurk below the surface which only the Doctor can see…

From a moon with poison seas, to a 19th century health spa, even somewhere as everyday as a furniture store on a Sunday afternoon – there are always hidden depths and unseen dangers to uncover!

The three adventures in this box set are as follows:

The Seas of Titan by Lizbeth Myles

  • Out on Saturn’s moon, Titan, an outpost all-but-forgotten by Earth struggles on against the odds. As the Doctor joins explorers deep in the methane seas, they discover a hidden civilisation. But will the Sea Devils prove to be the colony’s salvation or its final destruction?

Lay Down Your Arms by Lisa McMullin

  • 1864. Instead of relaxing at the Bad Homburg Spa, its visitors are fighting. And Bertha Kinzky, housekeeper to Alfred Nobel, is appalled. Perhaps the mysterious Herr Schmidt can help? Soon, Bertha is contending with aliens, as well as her mother’s matchmaking, as she and the Doctor try to keep the peace.

Flatpack by John Dorney

  • Liv Chenka and Tania Bell are spending Sunday afternoon on that most traditional of couple activities. Furniture-shopping! But just how long has London’s newest Flatpack store been open? Who is its mysterious manager? And is it even Sunday? Liv is about to run into a very old friend…

Producer David Richardson said: “When we started planning the relationship between Liv and Tania, we had no idea how much it would win over our hearts during the making of Stranded. I was delighted by how much the audience invested in them too. But what happened to Liv and Tania after Stranded? They went on to meet the Ninth Doctor! What will Liv make of this new incarnation, a man so far removed from the Doctor she once knew?”

Nicola Walker added: “Listeners who have never met Liv and Tania before are in for a real treat. Liv is spending some time – possibly the rest of her life – on Earth in London with the woman she loves, Tania Bell. Theirs has been the most brilliant love story.

“Liv travelled with Paul McGann’s Doctor for a very long time. She cares about him and is incredibly loyal to him. And while she understands, intellectually, that there are other Doctors out there, when she’s faced with that reality it’s like a death for her.”

Rebecca Root said: “To find Liv and Tania together – crossing over into the Ninth Doctor’s storylines is just a charm. It’s wonderful how their story plays out. Tania is settling down with Liv and wondering if it’s all that they hoped it would be. How will they get along with the mundane things of life?

“The environment of Flatpack is wonderfully familiar and yet really quite scary given all of the twists and turns that happen… it’s what could be described as a nightmarish episode.”

The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Hidden Depths is now available to pre-order for just £24.99 (collector’s edition CD box set + download) or £19.99 (download only) from the Big Finish website.

Nine is supposed to be a lonely, war torn, guilty, depressed man by the time he meets Rose. More or less straight out of the time war give or take a few quick hops on his own.

Rose is the one that makes him better, that’s literally his arc. The tenth doctor even makes the connection between the war born, angry metacrisis Doctor, born in bloodshed and rage to his ninth self before he met Rose.

Making him bump into old faces and get new companions before that, even meeting the cybermen. It all just diminishes his characterization. It cheapens his arc and makes Rose feel less significant if he’s been swanning around with all sorts before meeting her.

I suppose they’re not officially canon and you don’t have to take anything they say as gospel but if this was all playing out on television it would seriously annoy me. Ten has been given the same treatment as well. I suppose if you want to factor in the audios you can and if you don’t then you don’t.
