Big Finish Doctor Who The Fifth Doctor Adventures Conflicts of Interest

Available to order from www.bigfinish.com

The Fifth Doctor Plays With Friendly Fire

Details are today revealed for the first of Peter Davison’s Doctor Who audio adventures of 2023, featuring a guest appearance by Olivier Award-winning actress, Alice Krige.

The Fifth Doctor Adventures: Conflicts of Interest is a brand-new box set of full-cast audio dramas, due for release in April 2023 from Big Finish Productions. In Friendly Fire, the first of two three-part adventures, the Doctor and his TARDIS team must solve a mysterious disappearance on a deserted mining world.

Joining Peter Davison (the Fifth Doctor), Janet Fielding (Tegan) and Sarah Sutton (Nyssa) in the cast is Star Trek and The OA star, Alice Krige, as Reno, a mean-spirited marshal seeking vengeance.

The Fifth Doctor Adventures: Conflicts of Interest is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition CD box set (+ download for just £19.99) or digital download (for just £16.99), exclusively from www.bigfinish.com.

Friendly Fire by John Dorney

When the TARDIS needs to reset itself, the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan find themselves having to fill time on a space-hub filled with numerous attractions. This pleases Tegan and Nyssa no end… but the Doctor is more interested in visiting an alien friend of his living on a nearby mining planet and is able to persuade his friends to join him.

But on arrival his friend is nowhere to be found and the locals are more than slightly unwelcoming. With limited options for departure and a hostile populace they may be in a lot of trouble.

Sometimes true monsters are found in the strangest places.

Writer John Dorney said: “I’ve never written a three-parter for Doctor Who before so it was fascinating to look for the right size of story for that format. What I went for was a dark fable, where the stakes are low but personal, the enemies come from an unusual place and I get to ask some big moral questions.”

Producer David Richardson added: “John has written a rich character-based story, and in Reno we have an antagonist who is richly layered. We needed a phenomenal actor for the role, and at the top of the list was Alice Krige, who we have worked with several times before at Big Finish and throws herself into the scripts totally!

“Of course, I pinch myself every time I work with Alice – it’s the Borg Queen from Star Trek! Sybil Gordon from Chariots of Fire! Lady Jessica Atreides from Children of Dune! What a body of work she has – and what a privilege it is to have her in our productions.”

Alice Krige said: “[Reno] has carried hatred and smoldering anger all of her life. It’s obviously twisted her whole personality. Suddenly there’s an opportunity to exact what she perceives as revenge. When you’re consumed with hate, you destroy everything that’s worthwhile about being human.

“For me, the appeal of this production was the joy of working in a group, of interacting — with a script; with the director; with the production team and the whole group of actors. The creative exchange — it’s a sheer delight.”

The Fifth Doctor Adventures: Conflicts of Interest is now available to pre-order for just £19.99 (collector’s edition CD box set + download) or £16.99 (download only), exclusively from the Big Finish website.

Details of the second story in the box set will be revealed in due course.

Big Finish listeners can also save money by pre-ordering both Conflicts of Interest and 2023’s second The Fifth Doctor Adventures box set [title TBC] together in a bundle for just £38 (collector’s edition CD box set + download) or £33 (download only).

All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.

Please note that Big Finish is currently operating a digital-first release schedule. The mail-out of collector’s edition CDs may be delayed due to factors beyond our control, but all purchases of this release unlock a digital copy that can be immediately downloaded or played on the Big Finish app from the release date.

Well been away for 2 days, thankfully it was a fairly inexpensive trip. come back and BF release hours of fabulous Stories.

Already ordered Tom, Do went for the 12 set.vAs exp, ained below This is Superb value for money. plus we get more studied stories . The new Tom series 12 has 2×4 1×2 episodes that’s 8 episodes. I would have loved 2 x Hartnell ( Noonan and Bradley) in the same year, but that’s me being greedy.

Is this Big Finish masking ‘shrinkeconomics’ by referring to a flexible format – 2 x 3 part stories, as opposed to the ‘normal’ 2 x 4 part stories? I’ve noticed this creeping in a lot lately with a lot of 3 disc instead of 4 disc sets

Prices reflect product, most 3 disc sets are £19.99 – £22.99 (not including 9 & 10) and are a standard 3hr box. Prices have barely moved in years so either they charge higher for more.

This is a big difference :

      Monthly range – £14.99 x 14 releases = £224 for 28 1 hr discs
      vs.
      Boxset range – £19.99 x 14 releases = £279 for 42 1 hr discs

based on this, this is an extra 14 1 hr discs for £55 – the price of 3.5 old format monthly discs which is still 11 discs (or 11 hrs of content)

So actually we are getting more across the boxsets for a relatively small increase.

Unlike the monthly range, each doctors range is individually numbered so people can pick an mix and save money on releases they arent interested in, the monthly range (as with torchwood) forces OCD’s to buy all to remove gaps etc.

Great time to be a big finish fan.

also the move to “2 x 3 parts” or “6 part” is a chance to refresh the format, give the writers a challenge to operate outside of the standard 2 or 4 part format, some doctors had 7 parters.

Liek with the TV, i find sometimes the 4 x 25 minutes can more often then not have a lull episode that if they tightened things up, would make all the difference.

Its not about shrinking but actually expanding the format to 1,2,3,4,6,7 etc parters so freshen things up
