Big Finish 8th Doctor In the Bleak Midwinter

Available to order from www.bigfinish.com

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the Eighth Doctor

Big Finish is getting ready to celebrate the festive season with a terrific trio of tinsel-tinted tales, due for release in December 2023.

The Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) and his new companion, Lady Audacity Montague (Jaye Griffiths) will be spending Christmas in London and Edinburgh this year, in three brand-new full- cast audio adventures.

Midwinter is a magical time – a season of hope and renewal. A time to spend with friends. But the season also brings cold and darkness, and the TARDIS travellers are about to experience three very different winter’s tales… Joining the series regulars are guest stars Jason Watkins (Line of Duty, The Crown, Doctor Who: Nightmare in Silver) as Al Norton, Natalie Gumede (Coronation Street, Strictly Come Dancing, Doctor Who: Last Christmas) as Chief Elf, David Robb (Downton Abbey, Wolf Hall, First Among Equals) as Sir Donald Shaw, and Nickolas Grace (Robin of Sherwood, Brideshead Revisited) as Eldridge Brinkwood, a ghost story writer and broadcaster from 1947. Doctor Who – The Eighth Doctor Adventures: In the Bleak Midwinter is now available to pre- order for just £19.99 (collector’s edition CD box set + download) or £16.99 (download only), exclusively from www.bigfinish.com.

The three hour-long Yuletide adventures are:

Twenty-Four Doors In December by John Dorney

The TARDIS land in London on the first of December, and the Doctor decides to treat his companion to a proper Christmas holiday… even down to dragging out the Baker Street Advent Calendar. But elsewhere in the city a department store Santa named Al Norton is starting to have a very unnerving month. He’s on a collision course with the time travellers. Is it going to be a Happy Christmas?

The Empty Man by Tim Foley
Eldridge Brinkwood, a scribe of scary stories, who is preparing to share another of his tales on Christmas Eve. Except this is a horror like no other. The Doctor and his new friend have stirred something in the dark, something ruthless and relentless. And the Empty Man must feast.

Winter of the Demon by Roy Gill
The TARDIS brings the travellers to Victorian Edinburgh. Industrialist Donald Shaw plans to transform the city with electric light, but people are dying, found horribly burned… What ancient power has Shaw summoned? Can the Doctor and co. prevent the Winter of the Demon?

Doctor Who – The Eighth Doctor Adventures: Audacity (due for release in November) and In the Bleak Midwinter are each available to pre-order for just £19.99 (collector’s edition CD box set + download) or £16.99 (download only) per title, exclusively from www.bigfinish.com. Big Finish listeners can also save money by pre-ordering both box sets together in a bundle for just £38 (collector’s edition CD box set + download) or £33 (download only). All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.

Please note that Big Finish is currently operating a digital-first release schedule. The mailout of collector’s edition CDs will be delayed, but all purchases of this release unlock a digital copy that can be immediately downloaded or played on the Big Finish app from the release date.

I really wished they adapt the 8th Doctor BBC Books on big finish. Imagine hearing Sam, Fitz & Compassion on audio. There’s lots of great material to get from those books, including the Past Doctor Adventures

They did adapt some PDA’s a few years ago, but (as far as I know) they didn’t sell well, so were discontinued.

It was the VNA they adapted. Some sold pretty well but interest petered out, I think it was once they moved to less obviously marketable ones.

With what’s happening with UEC at the moment, I’m not sure if it’s likely to happen.

Does this boxset follow on from the one in November

It will do yes. Might not be a direct follow on in terms of there being a story arc and you should be able to listen to just this one but it will follow on.

I don’t particularly care for Big Finish, but this is the best-looking release of theirs I’ve seen in a long time.

Beautiful new outfit for the 8th Doctor! Just a shame the companion isn’t Lucie or Charley.

The Chimes or Midnight is still the best Xmas themed Doctor Who story (and one of the best stories ever).

They updated the artwork around the end of November to reveal Charley is in it.
