Patrick Troughton stars in this recreation of a lost classic from 1966.
The TARDIS brings the Doctor, Polly and Ben to a colony on the swamp planet of Vulcan. Soon after arriving, the Doctor witnesses a brutal murder.
Meanwhile, in another part of the colony an ancient crashed space capsule has been discovered in the swamps. The colony’s misguided chief scientist opens the capsule and discovers a group of strange metal ‘creatures’ inside. The creatures appear to be long dead. The Doctor calls the metal creatures ‘Daleks’ and claims that they are incredibly dangerous.
‘Power of the Daleks’ was the first Doctor Who story to star Patrick Troughton as the Doctor – broadcast between November and December 1966. Sadly, none of the six original broadcast episodes of ‘Power of the Daleks’ any longer exist in the BBC Film Archives. However, complete audio recordings of the lost episodes have survived in the hands of private collectors. And it is these audio recordings that are used as the basis for this special animated production of the programme. Now in a brand new edition and brought to you in glorious black and white…

I like to watch Doctor Who with friends and get enjoyment from it again especially with others who haven’t seen it before.
Unfortunately, my wife and friends won’t watch it unless its in colour. In particular, my wife enjoyed the new colour animations but despised the first B&W web of fear because she felt it looked “dated”.
I know to do an animation in only B&W will restrict the market to only those people that like watching B&W. I think its better for BBC to offer both B&W and colour versions in a DVD or Blu-ray. Surely, that’s not too hard to do.

August 2nd, 2020 - 12:13pmHopefully in future we do get fully animated black and white and colour versions of missing stories. Alongside full length telesnap/photo reconstructions. As my favourite version of ‘Power of the Daleks’ is still the colour animated version. Likewise for ‘Macra Terror’ and ‘Faceless Ones’ I prefer the colour animation. I think where a story is completely or mostly missing, the best way to watch it is in full colour animation. Cartoons always look better and more suited in colour.

August 3rd, 2020 - 1:59pmIt amuses me when animators delete scenes, reverse character positions, add sore-thumb easter eggs (like Master Wanted posters) and then bang on about how colourized versions aren’t faithful to the original serials! No disrespect to them, I appreciate their work, but they’ve proven themselves pretty flexible when it comes to authenticity. If colour is so terrible for Power, then why is 16:9 ratio okay?

August 3rd, 2020 - 9:49pmYou make it sound like the animators enjoy cutting things out. They are under a strict time and budget constraints. With how strict things are they are sometimes forced into impossible situations to get things delivered on time and within budget. As good as the animations are they will never 100 percent be accurate to the episode. There will always be characters that are not in the right position or does something that isn’t quite match up with what happens in the episode. It’s the animators job to tell the story in the best way possible in the time and money they get allocated
I find it funny that people had no problem with changes and nu who additions on other releases but because it was something chibnell era related it becomes this deeply offensive and retconing thing. They have been doing them since the invasion. Nobody was offended in the invasion when it had bad wolf written on the wall or added cyber ship or the car being changed. Those changes were ignored. Same with other stories that had nu who additions
16:9 is a request from bbc America who majority fund these. Simply put modern broadcasters have zero interest in broadcasting in 4:3. Just look at how bbc America broadcast the aztecs, tomb,spearhead, pyramid etc In 2013. It was all 16:9 and it was dreadful.

August 3rd, 2020 - 10:47pmPersonally, I prefer the animations in 16:9 (although I appreciate the 4:3 option on the Faceless Ones set). And yes I accept the fact that the animators are, due to budgetary/time constraints, occasionally, forced to kill some of their darlings. And I agree, they’re doing a fantastic job-I look forward to these brilliant releases, for years to come. But if they’re happy to slip in meta-easter eggs, and make other uneccessary tweaks that potentially conflict with the original material, they can’t very well baulk at the idea of colourisation. That, simply, is my point.
Now, if some Ted Turner wannabe crawls out of the woodwork, with plans for a full zoom-widescreen colourisation of the classic Hartnell and Troughton years, I’ll be the first one to root out the pitchfork and light my torch,. But we’re talking about animation here. If it’s fine to be in HD and 16:9 (again, my personal preference for the animations), and the odd visual in-joke isn’t considered beyond the pale (mildly irritating to me, but certainly no deal-breaker) then there shouldn’t be a problem with a colour option too.
But since I have one, on the 2016 release, this is the edition I will stick with for the time being.

August 3rd, 2020 - 10:51pmMy comments earlier , had nothing to do with Chibnell , but were just as other fans felt , that if you have a story that is animated and I agree , sometimes with a wide audience you may want to improve a scene, that’s fair to that wide audience ,you can’t please everyone all the time, but you also don’t need to add new series elements to an old story that stands up for it’s self as an adventure and works fine with no added extras … Unless it is an added option on the DVD. Which is a different matter altogether.

August 4th, 2020 - 2:30pmLove the fact that you often see the invasion animation held up as perfect yet zoe is in the wrong outfit at the beginning and Benton sits in a car not on a roof as in the original. No one seems to be complaining about that! I like the little Easter eggs. If you spot them great. But it can possibly ruin it is just ridiculous.

Did the roger Delgado and Peter butterworth wanted posters “ruin” it or just the sacha dawhan? I think it’s a nice touch that does nothing to the story.

August 5th, 2020 - 5:32pmHave to agree with Bobby that the colour animations don’t bother me that much. Faceless ones will always be watched in black and white with its existing episodes. Macra I’d actually watch the reconstruction over the animation and power I’ll happily watch either b&w animation. Don’t get me wrong the colour versions are ok I’d just rather watch them as I would the original episodes. I just think maybe the money could be used better if they stuck to a single b&w animation.

July 31st, 2020 - 8:12pmI suppose only 10 more stories could be animated following the imminent release of ‘Fury from the Deep’. 5 Hartnell and 5 Troughton. That’s if we rule out all the historical stories which seem very unlikely to be animated. So probably little to no chance of ‘Marco Polo’ , ‘The Crusade’ , ‘The Myth Makers’ , ‘The Massacre’ , ‘The Smugglers’ and ‘The Highlanders’ being animated unfortunately. So for Hartnell we could see ‘Galaxy 4’ , ‘Mission to the Unknown’ , ‘The Daleks Master Plan’ , ‘The Celestial Toymaker’ and ‘The Savages’ having a very good chance of being animated. For Troughton we could hopefully in future see ‘The Underwater Menace’ (special edition perhaps?), ‘The Evil of the Daleks’ , ‘The Abominable Snowmen’ , ‘The Wheel in Space’ and ‘The Space Pirates’ animated. ‘The Web of Fear’ episode 3 is also a possibility for animation. But I don’t imagine that all six episodes of ‘The Web of Fear’ will be animated. I would however think that the other ten stories would likely be completely animated.

August 1st, 2020 - 10:32amThere is the problem of mavic chen in masterplan. That make up is, whilst at the time acceptable, now not so much. It’s the same with the crusade. I’d love to see masterplan but not sure if they’ll be able to do it due to the race issues.

August 1st, 2020 - 10:57amWell if they animated all 12 episodes they could have a more, shall we say, ‘authentic’ Asian Mavic. The Beeb, could invite an Asian actor to dub over Kevin Stoneys lines, if they really wanted to be PC about it, and for the purists, well, they could have the original three episodes on another disc. But I think this is a moot point, as animating twelve episodes, even nine, just for one story, seems too big an ask. Including special features, it would have to be a four-five disc set, at least.
I suppose the Beeb could get round to doing something like this eventually, if minded to do so, but if so, it wouldn’t be for years. We’ll probably see two more Special Edition releases of Power, before we ever see Master-Plan on dvd.

So I would very much bet it might be the first historical to be attempted by the new animation teams. The myth makers also has a similar character and location count as fury. With highlanders the main issue is tartan, but fraiser hines did point out that the boat scene full of people wearing kilts were wearing all plain brown kilts with no patterns. It’s the crusade which is the main issue as it’s about 40 characters when you include costume changes. The next closest are marco and massacre on 27 and the other historicals are around low 20’s in similar numbers to macra, faceless, fury and wheel

August 1st, 2020 - 4:47pmIf the power special edition sells enough it may give them the incentive to do special editions of underwater menace and web. Not full blown animations but rather just the missing episodes gaps however I feel they will wait till wheel and abominable are animated before animating web as there as a chance it may turn up and at that point it would complete season 5 and wouldn’t be too expensive to do. Think the likes of evil abominable wheel and maybe space pirates will be getting full blown animated releases in the next couple of years especially if they stick to troughton. On the Hartnell side galaxy 4, toy maker and savages are all likely to get done. As for masterplan I can see it getting done over 2 releases. Mission to the unknown will probably just use the remake with the option to watch it with either the original or new audio. All that will probably take 5 years or so. A lot can happen in 5 years. Budgets can increase and what was unaffordable now might more affordable then. Animation may become cheaper and easier. Regarding historical stories I do think they may want to try 1 full blown animated historical to test the market and the smugglers is probably the easiest 1 to try. Or if they want to try a historical that doesn’t have telesnaps myth makers is probably the best 1 to try. If it’s successful it may make them try and push the budget out for more historical releases. There maybe a couple that may never be animated but it’s still amazing we are getting so many already. As far as 5 years ago if someone had told me we would be getting 3 fully animated releases and 2 maybe 3 season box sets on blu ray this Year I wouldn’t have believed it. Amazing considering 5 years ago we got underwater menace with a poor recon and that was it for the year.

I feel a lot is said about animating full stories when I was personally very happy with the animated individual episodes for Moonbase, Ice Warriors DVDs etc. I’m still gutted they never did a Planet Qurios animation of episodes 1&4 of The Underwater Menace which would have flowed perfectly into The Moonbase episode 1.

I’ve said many times if you look past historical signs of the times and view it for what it represents Doctor Who is fundamentally the least racist British program ever made.
The original director was Indian, the original producer was a young woman and and the driving force behind the concept of show is equality.

People point to things and shout racism to make themselves feel better about themselves it solves nothing. The media and government talk about intolerance and treat racism the same way they would murder. But education is the key, understanding what racism is and what it represents, people who have insecurities should explore them. The unfortunate slips in the past on television, not just Doctor Who but all programs should be left to help people understand how society develops. You cannot fight racism by denying it, you have to fight it but exploring it and helping people to see beyond to discover the best of humanity which is what Doctor Who stands for

July 30th, 2020 - 9:50pmThe animation is improved, although much of it feels and looks much the same as the original. It is really episode 1 which has the most notable changes. Strangely, I preferred the Derek Handley telesnap version on disc two. Just as easy to follow, and much closer to how the story originally looked…even if it is only more of a slide show. I think animation works best when it completes a story that is already half or at least more than half complete. Stories such as ‘The Reign of Terror’, ‘The Tenth Planet’ , ‘The Moonbase’ , ‘The Ice Warriors’ and ‘The Invasion’ are good examples. Only because enough of the original episodes do exist to give you a great example of the style of the overall story anyway. Animation works well completing an incomplete story. When it’s completely animation, it feels like watching a completely different version of the same story.

Tried to play it on my Computer after the DVD attempt & wouldn’t play any features at all! I’m sending it back for a new copy. But I fear that it’s obviously a Disc Production error if you have also had the same problem?

August 1st, 2020 - 1:35pmThe black and white images were colour graded for shades the occasional flash of blue is not an indication that they are going to do a full colour version. They will do one if the number of people complaining about no colour version is high enough to warrant it. Personally I have no interest in seeing the hartnell/troughton era in colour. They were made in black and white and for me that’s the way they should be.

August 1st, 2020 - 7:02pmThe problem is the colour animation was done by a Canadian company at the last minute separate from the original animation team and the original animation wasn’t made with colour in mind. The animators said if they knew that a colour version was happening there would be a lot of different design choices. Seeing as the animation for the 2020 Version has a lot of new material as well as a lot of the original animation if they were to do a new colour version they would have to start the whole lot from scratch which there wasn’t time or the budget to do so. Regarding the blue tint the original test which is on the disc shows a blue tint which maybe why there was a blue tint of ep 6. It’s certainly not a sign of there being a colour version existing

July 27th, 2020 - 10:01pmWatched the animation. Much improved on the original. Two short sequences edited out. The jig and the door handle. Jig is included as an Easter egg. Watched the extras on discs 1 and two. Decent stuff. The new colour photos are great. Who’d think hensell was dressed in bright blue! Reconstruction tomorrow and start on the many extras from disc three. So far well worth buying so ignore the complaining and enjoy it. Oh, by the way the rating logo is not the BBC’s doing. By law all DVD manufacturers will be using this new style which comes from the bbfc not the BBC or film companies. Besides it’s just a logo and some of the comments I’ve seen about are a bit overboard!

The animation is hugely improved, especially the early Tardis scenes. Great to see Daleks: The Early Years on disc three. Here’s hoping Cybermen: The Early Years presented by Colin Baker is included on an animated release of ‘The Wheel in Space’.

July 27th, 2020 - 11:40amI just read on the ‘Blogtor Who’ website that they’ve apparently cut the scene where the Doctor gets his recorder in the TARDIS. This kinda discourages me from getting the special edition. Since they’ve already animated the scene once for the original version, why should they now cut it out entirely, just cause it’s not as smoothly animated as the other redone scenes?

In the new animation, he’s just standing up with cloak on when in the original animation (just like the off-air 8mm footage), he is on his knees with cloak around him.

July 27th, 2020 - 2:47pmIt’s a bit misleading to call it a scene. It’s 1 16 second shot of the doctor playing a recorder and doing a jig. To be pedantic it’s more like 11 seconds as the other 5 is dead air. No dialogue is lost. Having seen the scene the shots around it I can see why they cut it. It’s very awkward and unconvincing compared with the shots around It and would take the audience out of things 5 minutes in. The shot is still included as an Easter egg with an explanation as to why it was taken out so it’s still included on the disc plus it also gives you an added incentive to keep hold of the 2016 animation.

I just can’t see why they could not have simply retained the original animation in the updated episode.

July 27th, 2020 - 7:10pmI don’t mind this little section being removed. It doesn’t really add anything and his playing of the recorder throughout the rest of the episodes sets that element up fine. The fact is as Gordon says it doesn’t now match the new animation and it was a bit naff. However I am keeping the 2016 version so I’ve still got it.

July 28th, 2020 - 12:03pmI really don’t mind. I adore the animations and hope to enjoy them for years to come. Anyway, if I want to experience the story more accurately, I would watch a reconstruction, or listen to the narrated TV soundtrack (both of which are completely uncut).

July 27th, 2020 - 10:31amI’ve got a custom cover too. It’s one of the Christopher Loftus Doctor Who DVD covers. His covers are absolutely fantastic. I even used his covers as replacements for ‘The Macra Terror’ and ‘The Faceless Ones’ awful cartoon covers.

July 29th, 2020 - 1:21amI’ve got his as well. Macra and faceless are much better than the animated versions. I’ve got all of the missing episode stories in DVD cases so if/when they’ve replaced I’ll probably keep his covers as I love most of them.

The newly found snippets of footage are a further tantalising glimpse into the original production. Lovely improvements to the animated version too and the sight of Patrick Troughton as Robin Hood is sublime. All in all am really glad I double-dipped with this release…

July 24th, 2020 - 4:25pmJudging from the trailer, it looks very much the same, a case of adding more frames, rather than a virtual re-do. Certainly not worth £18 IMO, at least not to anyone who already owns the serial. I think I’ll stick with my 2016 Amazon Digital version for the time being. If ever I can buy this for under a tenner, I’ll certainly consider it.

July 25th, 2020 - 10:54amVisually it looks similar but the art style isn’t where the improvements lie. Episode 1 especially is decidedly smoother and less clunky and more pacey. The characters move like people and feel far more natural. Lesterson’s facial improvements is much better conveyed too and Patrick facial expressions are far more interesting. To use a car comparison It’s the same engine but better parts to make it perform better. Finally the animators get to polish the animation to a standard they are finally happy with. Plus the new special features are all pretty good. Highlanders got pulled as there was no room for it and was accidentally left on the press release

July 25th, 2020 - 11:46amThe extra features are a plus point, i’ll grant you. They are bare bones on the digital release. But again, given the limited improvements over the original version, I can’t see the justification in purchasing this immediately and paying full price for it. I notice that amazon currently have The Macra Terror blu ray on sale today, for £8.03. Obviously, it’s a 16 month old release, and that price will probably rise tomorrow, but the point is if you wait, then there are bargains to be had. Not that I advocate waiting almost a year and a half of course- even The Faceless Ones had £5 lobbed off the price, a mere two months after release. For that reason, I think i’ll wait until closer to Xmas before purchasing Fury (assuming it’s out before then!). And i’ll wait to see if Power 2 drops to under a tenner, before I even consider a double-dip purchase.
Not that i’m stingy mind; it’s just the way I see it, every penny saved can be put towards any incoming SE boxsets I fancy!

New extras and improvements to the images. People just seem determined to complain. You don’t have to buy it. And Highlanders was never on it it was an error in the press release.

This is re/release of an already good set from 2016 not wait wasn’t the dvd out in 2017. It’s been 3 and a half years. I mean granted blu ray is set to be dead in 2023. But at least you know make it the best version possible first time. What they should have done is had a version (good enough but not perfect) out on bbc store For the anniversary and then waited a few months for the dvd in order to get it perfect!.

July 25th, 2020 - 4:42pmThe provision on commissioning the original power release was it had to be finished and complete by the 50th anniversary of the story and they only started work on it the end of March that year before getting official green light in may only giving them effectively under 6 months to do it. The dvd was out 21st November 2016. A little over 2 weeks after it’s bbc store release. It wasn’t possible to have them work after it because the bbc bosses wanted the dvd out for christmas.

You got to realise the original power didn’t have anywhere near the budget the more recent animations did and after the likes of reign and ice warriors not selling well it was a massive risk . Plus it would be deeply unfair for those that forked out originally if they had done a ton of work after the Digital and dvd release to have out a Much better version just a couple of months later.
