dwm-dAbout Doctor Who Magazine

Doctor Who Monthly (DWM) Magazine is associated with the BBC science fiction show based in the UK called Doctor Who. The magazine started out as a weekly in 1979 but became a monthly magazine in 1990. The ‘tie in’ magazine DWM now holds the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest running based on a TV show publication.

Doctor Who Monthly magazine which is sanctioned by the BBC, managed to survive after BBC cancelled Doctor Who in 1989 which was not revived again until 2005. In the intervening years when there was no television series the publication ran new stories as comics. The magazine was originally targeted at children but has now widened its appeal to adults. As the official magazine of the BBC show the publication grew to feature more insider information on the show including interviews the actors and production staff.

In 2006 the magazine changed again as the BBC launched their own version of Doctor Who magazine known as Doctor Who Adventures in the form of comics with the focus again on the younger set. DWM survived and published its 400th issue in September 2008 and celebrated its 30th anniversary in October 2009.

DWM continues to run the Doctor Who comic strip. Famous artists and authors have contributed to the publication over the years including John Wagner, Pat Mills, Dave Gibbons, Mike McMahon, John Ridgway and Ian Edginton. In addition to the Doctor Who comic strip there are also other humorous sidebar comics entitled ‘Doctor Who?’s’ and ‘Doctor Whoah!’ both based on the original story.

If all magazines and books die I will be out of a job as will tens of thousands of other people in this country alone, I’m a printer by the way. I understand the whole cloud thing but be careful what you wish for. The printed word has been and is a very powerfull thing. As for more trees etc.. Good point although the magazine paper will be FSC certified (google it). I love mg collection of DWM magazines and when the power goes out one day I’ll be reading them by candlelight not sure how you’ll be reading off the cloud though.

Do people still do paper? Outdated news, inflexible, non interactive and worst of all….you end up with grubby fingers. 🙂

Yeah good point, but for me I love books, and really don’t want to be reading them via ‘brain-vision’ or whatever they will use in the future.
Also books are usually cheap which is good. I guess it just comes down to personal preference 🙂
Anyway If there’s anyone you should be talking about paper to it should be my history teacher, filled up a whole book with print out’s last term 😆

Nothing – and I do mean that – nothing can replace the feeling of having a book or magazine made of paper being held in your hands.

      February 4th, 2014 - 10:36pm

Personally, obviously. But a kindle just doesn’t do it for me.

People said that about Vinyl when CDs arrived….and now CDs are being left behind….it’s all about the cloud my friends. Cheap, convenient and immediate.

I loved getting magazines but I resent paying £5 to read something that I read online 3 weeks earlier….for nothing.

      February 4th, 2014 - 11:37pm

CDs are indeed being left behind… for vinyl. You can never kill of a format entirely, someone will keep it going.

      February 5th, 2014 - 12:26am

Niche markets…there no mass produced vinyl….the same will happen with mags. It will die. It’s not cost effective.

Now I know why theres no coverage of collecting photographic material on the site.

I still get excited when I see new photos from the classic era are try to get prints myself if I can.

The thrill in the pre video 70s of seeing bbc monochrome stills from the Hartnell Troughton serials and then visiting the BBC photo library on the very day they had the first stills of Davison in his outfit is seldom recaptured nowadays…..

I don’t use downloads either. If you can’t hold it in your hands, you don’t really own it. And for fans of things like DW, you like to be able to collect the items, and you can’t really have a collection of downloads. Sure, you can look at them, read or listen, but you don’t get the satisfaction of seeing the spines line up.

I was told late last year I look like the late ‘Only Fools and Horses’ actor Roger Lloyd-Pack who played the Cybercontroller John Lumic in Doctor Who – Series 2, but I don’t think I look like him either.
