Catching up on some of the special features.

Was it ever explained what that easter egg was on the 2012 Greatest Show in the Galaxy DVD? It baffled me ever since I first got it on the DVD, and nobody else online seems to have a clue either. They added it to the end of the Psychic Circus music video on this set and didn’t include any context caption or anything. It’s some continuity announcements (from Survival Part Two) interrupted by an extract from the music video, presented like it’s an off-air VHS recording. Which doesn’t really make any sense because the music video was created for the DVD.

It was probably the strangest easter egg in the DVD range.

My wild, wild guess would be that the easter egg was a discreet slip-in by the team working on the special features – discreet because the upper management had the casting decision on what could and couldn’t be included on the dvd back then (due to disc storage space, rights, legal permissions, creative decisions etc.)

Sneaking little extracts of it would seem to fit more than one of those reasons above, and the off-the-books style about it being styled as a faux ‘broadcast interruption’ copying that infamous Max Headroom dress up hoax that interrupted a broadcast re-run of ‘Horror of Fang Rock’ – again, clutching at straws here but that would appear to be what it’s trying to replicate as a means of giving the higher ups on the dvd range the middle finger.

Could be wrong on all of that, but anything lesser than the above would be basically ‘no reason’.

Thanks for the response! Yeah honestly other than it just being a in-joke on the part of Mark Ayres or Dan Hall or whoever I have no idea what the context is. They don’t even explain the origins of the song itself on the insert. Apparently Mark Ayres made it in 1988 with the crew while they were making the story, he tried to release it as a single but the BBC rejected it. They made the music video for the DVD like they did with “Trial theme” on the Trial DVD box set.

I never knew it was on there, I don’t think I watched all of Chris Guard’s video. Will rewatch when it’s out on SE 9th November.

It would be nice to have a classic trailer for a collection or animation in the meantime, to look forward to that release, even if it’s next year.

      Could 2027 look like this?

      Season 7 SE
      Season 16 LE
      Smugglers
      Season 13 SE
      Season 11 LE

I cannot see that will stop using AI or remove it from the SE editions such as 13 or 21.

      September 24th, 2026 - 6:57pm

I guess it is a little peculiar how there’s very little official mention of what the Psychic Circus was about, not even a cheeky description in the booklet or anything. Again maybe there’s just something legally eiffy about it, hence it isn’t addressed, but by luck it just about made it into the 2012 dvd easter egg, and in amongst the hours upon hours of Blu-ray extras.

The word going around GallifreyBase, Reddit, Twitter is that supposedly this current delay is down to a more in-depth re-review process into the use of AI on seasons 13 + 21, and that both may well be being tweaked as we speak, so going back into the project files and switching off the AI, likely more complicated than it may seem, is pushing back the next sets.

If true, I’m all for this up to date review because not only do the previous two sets get extra treatment, arguably some of the best material Doctor Who itself has ever produced, but it means the future sets, particularly Season 11 that’ll be technically tricky in itself, will avoid all the rigmarole of needless AI processing that would’ve demanded more (wasted) time, computing power, money, etc, because AI in that kind of use is silly expensive, and the visual results have been utterly repulsive.

I wouldn’t be surprised if 13 + 21 standards are put off a while longer yet for that reason – but if the fixings reach out to other sets affected by the AI upscaling like Season 7, then that standard set also may end up taking even longer to bring out.

At the end of the day, yes there are AI tools big and small, visual and audio that have already been used for years, and a lot of it isn’t invasive or off-putting – but nevertheless when something as bad as this has happened, the right thing to do is to recognize it, admit you screwed up, and do whatever is in your power to fix it.

Hopefully lessons have finally been learned going forwards.

      September 24th, 2026 - 9:20pm

Someone else mentioned about s16 pushed back to next year due to ai maybe being removed due to fan backlash of the last few sets.
For the amount being forked out by fans can see why they want a product worth their money.
Hopefully we get something before Christmas. Either an animation or at least a minisode announcement trailer for The Collection even if not out until Feb/march 28

    • Babelbro

      September 25th, 2026 - 12:23am

@James: Yeah the broader / stronger rumour in itself is simply that S16 has been delayed.

Honestly, I cannot see S16 coming out with the exact same AI upscaling. Doctor Who’s in a precarious gap right now until if/when a new production company eventually seals the deal with the BBC on the tv show, so big expensive to make home media releases like The Collection cannot afford to take the exact same level of backlash as with the last handful of sets, moreso S13 + S21.

While some studios like OldGoldMedia are more open and transparent about digital processes like DNR (and credit to Paul Vanezis on finally revealing little technical tidbits on Twitter) re. the TV Movie and Blakes 7) for some reason it’s always been very hush hush with Doctor Who “Oh don’t worry everything’s fine, no need to know basis” kind of schtick from Mark Ayers on GallifreyBase, or at worst publically just totally exploding off the rails like Richard Bignell over on Twitter at someone’s constructive critique of generative AI on the picture quality. It’s like either you mustn’t know, or if you find out then there’s this hostility. Very weird.

As far as I remember, I believe Peter Crocker (said person that’s been applying said generative AI on Doctor Who) is retiring by the end of this year, so if things work similar to say, an animation studio, then it means someone’s not only got to take Crocker’s position but also be trained in that role of picture restoration specifically on Doctor Who.

So when you put all those moving parts together, what would make logical sense is for a said re-review, assessing technical feedback, understanding that, given how much more difficult the remaining sets are going to be to bring to restore, then there needs to be a refresh headed by said new picture restoration artist, possibly with new ideas of their own to bring to the table, something alternative to the generative AI, hopefully.

So yeah, I would just assume that this range needs, and is going to require more time than usual before moving to the next set. In the meantime as you say, there’s many alternative projects and concepts Doctor Who can be doing to fill the void. An Animation, or minisode would be really lovely.

As a fan I’m so fed up with all the doom and gloom regarding The Unmade Season’s AI generated Doctor Who series on YouTube, and the horrible backlash to the ‘Doctor in Distress’ charity fundraising music video created by a group of Doctor Who fan film artists.

At this stage, no matter how small, it would be really nice in the meantime to have a little something full of joy and goodness that’s Doctor Who. I’m currently loving the Christel Dee interviews with Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant, Peter Davison and Janet Fielding on YouTube right now. Genuinely top quality.

I think we have to accept we are not going to get another Limited Edition Collection Set or Animation this year.

This year has felt like 1996 for me when the VHS range was suspended and back titles where deleted. As according to staff at my HMV store the following of the Classic Series on DVD have now been deleted or not been continued once stock has gone.

    The Keys Of Marinus
    The Sensorites
    The Reign Of Terror
    The Dalek Invasion Of Earth
    The Web Planet
    The Time Meddler
    The Ark
The Power Of The Daleks Standard Edition
The Web Of Fear Standard Edition
The Enemy Of The World Standard Edition
    The Mind Robber
    The Krotons
    The War Games
    The Ambassadors Of Death
    The Mind Of Evil
    Colony In Space
    The Daemons
    Day Of The Daleks
    The Mutants
    The Green Death Special Edition
    Death To The Daleks
    Planet Of The Spiders
    Robot
    Genesis Of The Daleks
    Planet Of Evil
    The Brain Of Morbius
    The Seeds Of Doom
    The Masque Of Mandragora
    The Deadly Assassin
    Horror Of Fang Rock
    Image Of The Fendahl
    The Invasion Of Time
    Destiny Of The Daleks
    City Of Death
    Nightmare Of Eden
    Meglos
    Four To Doomsday
    The Visitation Special Edition
    Black Orchid
    Earthshock
The Five Doctors 25th Anniversary Edition
    The Twin Dilemma
    Attack Of The Cybermen
    Vengeance On Varos Special Edition
    The Two Doctors
    Timelash
    Revelation Of The Daleks
    Time And The Rani
    Paradise Towers
    Delta And The Bannermen
The Greatest Show In The Galaxy
    Battlefield
    Ghost Light
    The Curse Of Fenric
    Scream Of The Shalka
    The Beginning
    Beneath The Surface
    UNIT Files
    The Legacy Collection
    The E-Space Trilogy
The Trial Of A Time Lord

So quite a lot according to HMV they said it’s not known why so many are being deleted but it may have something to.do with lack of sales for those particular titles and the IPlayer plays a big part of that as well. But many of the titles that are not in store maybe still available on their website only while the remaining stock lasts.

I don’t know if there is any truth in what HMV are saying but many of the above titles have gone on Amazon as well.

Like a said this year has been very like 1996 future releases have been on pause this year.
But am not surprised that most of the DVD range is about to go in to the void which will see these became rare and increase in value on eBay.

I mean if it’s December and there’s been no news, sure, but I wouldn’t rule anything out when there’s still October and November for potential announcements.

    • James

      September 15th, 2026 - 3:33pm

We got a tease of the colour for the next Collection set the other day. That’s normally a month before an official announcement of the set isn’t it? So October for a December/january release. Would the deletion of titles also reflect that they have been upgraded to blur ray with The Collection sets coming out? Was it not the same when the dvd versions came out that the vhs titles slowly began to fade away?

    • Professor Flibble

      September 15th, 2026 - 3:51pm

Also we’ve had animation releases with only about a month or two between announcement and release, and they’ve almost certainly been working on some over the last year. My fingers are crossed we’ll get a season completed with the next one. Wheel in Space or Space Pirates, particularly. Also cause Hartnell’s had a bit more attention recently and Troughton’s nearly finished.

    • Gordon

      September 15th, 2026 - 4:16pm

Wouldn’t expect a release till at least December. The bfi schedule is up to the end of November and with the exclusion of a discussion at the bfi Reuben Library on the 23rd November there isn’t anything and not even a gap for a potential event not yet anounced at the weekend. There is still time for an anouncment bfi screening and release but I expect the time available for that anouncment only has about 2-3 weeks window before that closes (around 8 October)

    • The Unlicensed Physician

      September 15th, 2026 - 5:10pm

What’s the minimum run of discs needed by Vantiva and the like? Then having to ship them from Poland or Austria now? I can’t see it being worth the effort for the minimum run, which is probably quite high at the in demand/regular pressing plants. How many of the DVDs would sell even another 2000 copies at a profitable price point? And with so many cheap second-hand copies about they’ve probably reached the point where they’ve become financially unviable.

    • Professor Flibble

      September 15th, 2026 - 6:08pm

Oh I never really consider the BFI screenings cause I never go to them. They’re always in London and sell out quickly.

Is it definite that Big Finish Creative are finished doing them? Shapeshifter’s technically separate. Thing is, they both did Season 3 animations so there doesn’t seem to be a particular pattern to it. I’d hope Shapeshifter will refine their 3D animation and do the longer stories since that seemed to be their goal. Don’t understand why people totally shut out the idea of further 3D animations when Shapeshifter improved quite a lot with Celestial Toymaker, a third go could be very good.

    • Gordon

      September 15th, 2026 - 6:44pm

Neither big finish creative nor shapeshifter have shown any sort of activity to suggest they have been working on anything though big finish creative have had some filings in company house with address changes which suggests the company is being kept alive but nothing interesting. Shapeshifter hasn’t updated their website since 2024 plus some of the people that worked for them have left. Chloe grech for example who worked on fury,g4,snowmen and toymaker now works for flying bark animation who do a lot of things for Netflix (stranger things 85, ghostbusters are 2 shows the company is currently working on)

From what I gather it’s Paul hembury’s new company that will be handling things from here on in. Not quite sure how he’s going to handle things going forward though but he does have some sort of plan to speed things up.

    • Professor Flibble

      September 15th, 2026 - 7:50pm

Yeah I’d hope so. I also hope they go back to the kind of quality they had with Macra, Faceless and Evil. Not keen on the flat cartoony backgrounds, lack of proper lighting and drastic creative liberties since. Removing Rob Ritchie was a big mistake.

    • Nb7

      September 15th, 2026 - 8:14pm

We could get a collection announcement with pre order links but no release date, that’s happened before. I do think we’ll get an announcement within the next couple of weeks.

    • SV7

      September 15th, 2026 - 9:27pm

Shame about the DVD releases if true 🙁

    • Andy

      September 16th, 2026 - 5:19pm

It’s strange how Season 25 hasn’t had a official release date but I expect October as it would be 2 years since the Limited Edition was released. But Season 7 is coming in early January which is less than 2 years since it was released on the Limited Edition.

This is all we have had this year so far compared to last year.

      Season 15 Standard Edition
      Season 21 Limited Edition
      The Movie in 4k hd
      The Black Archives Circuit Breaker
      Season 25 Standard Edition

I’ve added Season 25 because that will no doubt be released by the end of the year.

But if we are going to get a late announcement for a Christmas release its either gonna be a Limited Edition Season 11 or 16 but I would be very surprised if it was Season 1 or 6. or they might be the New Who box set for 11th, 12, and 13th Doctors. But we all know what they are like for late surprises they might have been working on a bunch of Animations and are planning a Animation Box Set that could be a possibility for example they might have the first doctor animation box set with The Myth Makers, The Massacre, and The Smugglers. Or a Second Doctor Animation Box Set with The Highlanders, The Wheel In Space, and The Space Pirates.

Yeah it is a shame for the DVD range SV7, my local HMV store where good enough to give me a list of the titles I mentioned that was been discontinued once stock has cleared out of those titles they will be removed from the list on their website. Even some of those have now been deleted on Amazon or some are still in stock with either a few left but with no mention of more are on the way, so yes it’s sad this might be the start of the end for the Classic range on DVD. For those titles for now.

We might still be able to get those titles from specialist stockists but will be quite expensive because of their rare availability.

But yeah it’s just like the VHS range DVD is going the same way but this time the blame for this is down to these streaming platforms which has had an impact on sales of the physical media, but what some people won’t realise that they won’t be on those platforms forever when contract rights expire. So I think it is very important that we save the physical media keep it alive before it’s too late.

    • Bookcollector

      September 16th, 2026 - 6:36pm

Andy, people also don’t realise that a platform can just remove a programme/series/film regardless of contracts. I’ve collected films for 40 years now and it’s a bizarre situation these days where it’s back to how it was 40 years ago. Some films are unavailable to own. To watch them you have to buy a specific platform but you don’t own the movie and it can disappear at any time. It’s so mad there are big movies or series that you can’t physical own.

    • Gordon

      September 16th, 2026 - 6:46pm

Andy Season 25 is out 9 November 2026. Season 7 may have gotten its date first due to post Christmas being far easier to schedule than pre Christmas when it’s crammed

As I’ve said before the animations cost 6 figure sums each to make. No way they will debut in box sets.

    • Gordon

      September 16th, 2026 - 7:19pm

Also i suspect some of these might be that these aren’t going fully out of print rather a print on demand service like some of the us releases. I’m actually surprised some of these haven’t went out of print already especially with how long they have been out (some over 20 years at this point) and some have been succeeded by special editions

    • bookcollector

      September 16th, 2026 - 7:44pm

A lot of the vhs tapes were unavailable by the time the last ones came out. Its not really a surprise that who is being deleted. Many films and TV series released over the last 20-26 years are now unavailable to buy. That part of it is just the way its always been i still find it strange that now there are so many things that have never and will never be made available to own. But as Gordon says the really early who releases were deleted after the special editions came out and now its the turn of other stories.

    • Andy

      September 16th, 2026 - 7:50pm

In reply to James, no back in 1996 just before the The Movie was transmitted, the VHS range was suspended and a lot of the back catalogue of titles were deleted along with the recent release of The Hand Of Fear which was only out for a few months. But before then we were getting one or two stories each month.

In 1996 we only had three releases from the VHS range.

      The Hand Of Fear
      The Movie
      The Green Death

The Green Death was only released which was to dedicate the passing of Jon Pertwee.

It continued with range in 1997 with the new logo adapted from The Movie, the DVD range was a few years away not until 1999, as a test run The Five Doctors Special Edition was released as the first but it took until late 2000 for the range to get going releasing a previous VHS title each month along side the VHS range of the latest title to be released on the format. Which run until the last titles in 2003. After then the VHS range was dying out remarkable it took twenty years for the existing titles to be released on VHS. Compare to just 13 on the DVD range. And now it is either Blu-ray or streaming services that are the cause of the DVD range to be next to fade away.

We are creeping closer to October and I think we might get a teaser for a collection or possibly an animation release for 2027. The SE S7 & S25 have dates now, so I suspect that’s it for this year.

So have we all resigned are self’s to the fact that there isn’t going to be another season boxset this year ?
If they are only going to release one season a year from now on , it will take until 2033, by which time I will be 70 ! Maybe season 1 could be released last on it’s 70th anniversary. By which time Marco Polo could have been recovered or recreated by either animation or AI. I have seen some really good AI on YouTube of Fury From the Deep and Dalek Masterplan . So AI could play a positive part to play in future releases.
Hopefully we will get more missing episodes to fill in the gaps.

There would be riots. No matter much certain people push it for some peole there is (quite rightly in my opinion) a zero tolerance attitude towards AI. We’ve seen the mess it got the last few sets into.

You get a poor quality product with no sense of artistic taste putting people out of a job.

Using ai to create performances in an ultra realistic appearance is a very diferent can of worms to using ai on the restoration. I’m not 100 percent sure on all the legal facts but It’s a way more grey area legally and copyrightable than traditional human made animation especially as it’s a commercial release. Simply put AI-gen animations can’t be copyrighted if they are made completely by ai without substantial human creative input. For that reason alone I doubt bbc studios will head down that route baring a change in the law. The legal clearances from various estates alone for it would be an enormous headache before they even start. If just one person or estate says no to it then it’s pretty much doomed

Us only getting 1 set this year does not mean it’s going to be 1 a year going forward

    • Bookcollector

      September 8th, 2026 - 4:07pm

I believe it would be very difficult to do a 100% accurate AI reconstruction of a who story. Several reasons. Costs, it would be phenomenally expensive. What someone can do at home for nothing on a small scale will not translate to a commercial release. Just look at Levine’s appalling efforts. Wheel is good but nowhere near a commercial release. The biggest factor at the moment though may be legal. Many actors and actor unions are against AI simply as it is essentially regarded as image/identity theft. Every actor/actors estate in a production would, as Gordon says, have to clear the use of their image. If an actor or their estate can’t be contacted then the project is no go. You can’t use the soundtrack with a different person’s image as that would also be an issue. The current animations are different, they have been cleared as an interpretation of the original material. AI would not be an interpretation but a recreation of real people both living and dead. That is a legal minefield at this time.

    • Rory, the original you might say

      September 8th, 2026 - 4:26pm

      Valid point, Gordon.

If the extra time before the next release is, as many suspect, a course-correction from the overuse of AI in the last couple of releases, then it does not mean that the other sets would be similarly delayed, because they have already made the changes or know what work needs to be done to correct.

    • Amypondfan

The older dvd is fine but the bluray is still unclear. Primarily the issue is streaming but its unclear whether the existing contracts cover bluray or not.

      September 8th, 2026 - 9:13pm

Everything we’ve heard to date suggests there are no issues with the physical release.

If we were talking about streaming though Coburn’s estate will hold a degree of control until the day it becomes public domain (and as Waris Hussein is thankfully still with us the timer for that hasn’t even started yet).

      September 8th, 2026 - 9:24pm

The physical media rights to an unearthly child is fine according to Steve Roberts. Those were sorted in perpetuity and signed by Anthony coburn’s wife in 1990. “He couldn’t take those away even if he wanted to”

    • RobW

      September 9th, 2026 - 7:18am

Physical rights are covered under videogram. Which means NO issues for blu ray, certain fans just like to keep saying it is. I heard that Stef spent money on a home studio and wanted money from the BBC to pay for it, that’s what this is all about, rumoured he wanted more than the £20k offered

Well let’s hope we get 16 and 11 next year. After that I think we will probably go one sixties season a year. As far as AI is concerned, I take on board everything everyone has said on the subject. We can agree to disagree on any Doctor Who subject. Without the need to get nasty and personal .

      September 9th, 2026 - 11:35am

Remember Rob Ritchie started off with CGI Daleks and look where that took him, Power and Evil with other work on he range. Perhaps the BBC could look at some of the talented fans to work on the range, however I think AI has it’s place, but it’s fairly limited and won’t be used on Who animations, as aren;t they are going back to 2D.

    • James

      September 9th, 2026 - 11:56am

Regards to ai. Hit and miss. If it’s done good enough and really unnoticeable it’s ok. But if can see it easily (like a certain persons remake of 60s eps) it’s shocking.
I did watch last night on YouTube Unmade Seasons first ep. You wouldn’t really know it wasn’t an actual episode. Flourless imo.
Think they should carry on with regular restoration work without any ai involvement. It has worked so the early sets and all the dvd releases.
Agree we’ll get 16 early 2027 and 11 late 2027. Then maybe a slight pause to let animations catch up. With either 5 or 6 released mid to late 2028. Then roughly the same time each year after.
Think we may get an animation around December this year/janury 2027. Then another one summer./autumn 2027. Then similar in 2028 onwards.
      ,
Maybe an extra product next year with a vanilla release dvd. Either The Crusade given it’s already been done for The Collection or maybe a real vanillabasic release for DMP. Or even a Lost in Time Revised Edition with the 13 found episodes we’ve had since its last release,

    • Gordon

      September 9th, 2026 - 11:26pm

I watched out of curiosity and I really wasn’t that impressed with theunmadeseason. It’s technically bad in filmmaking terms. The basic 180 rule is broken repeatedly and voices feel artificial and leave me cold.

In terms of creativity there is nothing new here. You can dress a kind of capaldiesque looking doctor with Tennantesque dialogue all you want but it’s not going to feel like a Doctor of their own. Same with the companion that kinda looks like an older version of Sarah Jane with a Scottish accent. The reuse of old monsters is also quite jarring. I mean why can the pting all of a sudden able to do lightning or speak english. Is the thing with tentacles supposed to be the ood as it doesn’t look like it? Plus why have the people been transformed into copies of Haemovores from fenric. The resolution is also esentually everybody lives from the doctor dances. As for the music it’s just trying to copy Murray gold. I’ve seen folk say it’s the best doctor who in years but if it was rtd releasing this it would have gotten shouted down for copying and rehashing old monsters and ideas and a lack of originality. I get it’s a fan thing but there really isn’t anything creative here outside the person doing the prompts.where is the originality?

As for a stand alone crusade release I just can’t see it. Would have happened already. It may happen with an animation but as it exists now it’s not really worth it when season 2 which has so much more content is only £10 extra second hand or £20 brand new.

I also don’t see the point in doing a revised version of lost in time. 11 of those 13 eps recovered since the first one have had individual releases twice. Plus I feel there is probably scope to do a mission to the unknown or masterplan release instead of lost in time with some sort of recon or animation filling in gaps

    • Andy

      September 10th, 2026 - 2:41pm

      In reply to Auton.

No An Unearthly Child is a dispute with the BBC and Coburn’s estate. If that were the case they would have removed the current DVD from the Beginning box set. So no issues with any future physical release. I think if Marco Polo wasn’t the issue then I think they would have released The Collection Season 1. Or they could release it like Season 2 with a reconstruction of Marco Polo but if they are plans for it to be animated then Marco Polo would need a stand alone release first. There also may be a problem with the current animation episodes of the Reign Of Terror they might have to be redone at some point to.upscale those to HD.

    • Professor Flibble

      September 10th, 2026 - 6:23pm

Would a reedit of the Reign of Terror animated episodes be possible?

      “It’s probably just a chill.”

    • Auton

      September 10th, 2026 - 6:46pm

That leads to another question, could they improve the Reign of Terror animation for the Season 1 set or would that need a seperate release beforehand due to the work involved?

    • RobW

      September 10th, 2026 - 7:37pm

Two problems with Reign animation. The fast cuts and the Hartnell head animation that they used in TP4 as well. I doubt they will do a re-edit as it costs money to do so

    • bookcollector

      September 10th, 2026 - 7:40pm

They won’t change the reign animation. Why waste the money? Yes its not perfect in terms of the constant cutting but it still does the job and spending money on creating new animation would be expensive. One reason for the constant cuts was to not have animate static characters talking for long sections. To re-edit would mean having to animate those characters again.

    • Professor Flibble

      September 10th, 2026 - 8:01pm

The problem with Reign’s animation is, well I wouldn’t outright say it’s unwatchable but it’s bordering on it. If you pause it, it looks great, but it’s hard to take very seriously when it’s frantically cutting between close-ups of characters’ eyes.

Also on a lesser note, I’d like them to actually grade the Planet 55 animations in black and white. Always bothered me that they’re not actually monochrome. Reign has a weird sepia tint and Tenth and Moonbase are both light blue. And maybe it’s a nitpick but for consistency’s sake, and probably at no cost at all, change Hartnell’s credit in the Reign animated episodes to “Dr. Who.”

    • bookcollector

Watched reign last year and thought it was fine

    • Gordon

      September 10th, 2026 - 8:50pm

The one question with the reign animation is do the assets and files still exist and are they accessable? If they do they could redit it and perhaps add or change bits to improve or If not it might just be an upscale of what we already have

    • Professor Flibble

      September 10th, 2026 - 9:01pm

Might the ones at Big Finish know? Jason Haigh-Ellery? David Richardson? Because they worked on it. I’ve heard James Goss still has the original files for The Invasion.

    • Gordon

      September 11th, 2026 - 1:24am

That’s a good point. I expect they may have the original files for 10th planet and moonbase.

The cosgrove hall archive I believe also hold animation files to invasion as well.

Ice warriors might be tricky as the company went bust shortly after completion. Chris chapman worked on it so the files might still exist.

Everything power 2016 onwards exists in HD and is pretty easily excessible id imagine. Charles Norton, Anne-Marie Walsh Gary Russell and Paul hembury are still around if they wanted access to original files. I can imagine they possess original files as does Rob Ritchie who left the range after evil.

It wouldn’t surprise me if they did work on some of the 2016 ones onwards for the collections. Fixes where needed, repurposing 16:9 black and white animations in 4:3 (macra and fury spring to mind) and maybe the rough and tumble scene if budget and time alllows

    • Professor Flibble

      September 11th, 2026 - 4:08am

With the touches up they did on Shada, it wouldn’t surprise me either. I’m guessing they might still have access to the 2.5D character rigs because they used the Troughton one in the Power special edition, so maybe it’s still doable but the rough and tumble scene would be a pleasant surprise. As would Polly being given her Moonbase look at the start of the story. In terms of minor fixes, I hope they sort out those weird TARDIS interior doors in Underwater Menace.

4:3 versions of those animations would be a dream, I’d love to have a consistent presentation for 1960s Doctor Who. And if they could make the pre-titles scenes in Power and Macra optional, that’d probably be good too actually.

    • RobW

      September 11th, 2026 - 11:37am

James told me he has the invasion assets on hard drive under his bed. I have a version that has two different scenes, so not sure how much alter material exists but it does

I’ve just watched a clip on YouTube of an old film someone has “improved” (their word) with ai. Dear God. The actors look like auton facsimiles! I genuinely thought one actress had a mask on until I realised it was the ai. There really should be laws governing the use of ai. It was an insult to the actors.

    • Professor Flibble

      September 12th, 2026 - 3:12am

RobW, that’s incredible! Is it by any chance the original version prepared for BBCi in 2005? Before 2|Entertain told them to change it for the DVD? Because I’m guessing one of the alternate scenes is Tobias Vaughn on the big screen in Episode 4.
Oh and is it the animated Troughton face in the titles?

Is this true? Ive heard nothing this is according to internet search. All I put in the search box when is Doctor Who The Key To Time coming out on Blu-ray? And this is the result I got.

    October 29, 2026
The Blu-ray release of “Doctor Who: The Key to Time” is scheduled for October 29, 2026. This box set includes six linked stories from the 16th season of Doctor Who, along with various extras. You can find it available for purchase on platforms like Amazon.

Now after seen this I searched on Amazon it just comes up the DVD Box Set for both the UK and USA. But if so we might get an announcement sometime this week I do hope this is true and finally it will complete Tom Baker on these sets. With just 11 to go.

October 29th is on a Thursday, not entirely sure that’s accurate for a release day as usually all the other sets have been released on a Monday. October 26th is on a Monday though, so maybe a mix up? Or maybe it could be an announcement trailer on Thursday 29th of October, as most of the Collection announcements have been made on Thursdays, but then why plan so far ahead to make an announcement? Or it could be false rumours. Hopefully we get something before the end of this year.

Yeah it’s just what I thought nothing never comes out on a Thursday. Firstly Mark hardy (he played a swampy) has said he’s been interviewed for a kroll making of

Secondly Brian Hodgson has contributed to a release that he says is coming out next year

Thirdly Pete mctighe has said the remaining 60 seasons are being left till last.

If they have interviewed Brian Hodgson, that implies a 60s set or an animation.

    • Prof Horner

      September 7th, 2026 - 11:25am

A Brian Hodgson interview could easily go on a Space Pirates animation. Since there is really no one left from that story to do a doc, apart from Frazer and Wendy and my fellow Bradford lad George Layton. They could easily do a Peter Bryant tribute as well, as it was his last credited story .

    • Gordon

      September 7th, 2026 - 7:34pm

Come to clarify things as more info has come to light as well as weirdly some false reporting from someone who allegedly went.

Mark hardy did say he was recording an interview for a kroll making of but it’s not being recorded for a couple of months which would completely rule out s16 coming out this year.

Pete mctighe said that the 60s sets are being left till last to make them as complete as they can be. That could partly explain why we haven’t had something else instead as the only other options are 11 and a wilderness years set and as the tv movie is just out is way too soon for the latter and the former might need more time do to restoration and hopefully new fx.

The Brian Hodgson contribution that he has recorded is him talking about Verity Lambert and the release is due “early next year”. That pretty much narrows it down to season 1,3 or stand alone releases of Marco Polo, the crusade and mission to the unknown. Putting my speculation cap on and eliminating the 2 season sets as they aren’t as a complete as they are going to be at present a mission to the unknown release with the 2 recovered masterplan eps would be the most likely of the three

    • RobW

      September 7th, 2026 - 9:55pm

They might go for Season One and rule out a Marco Polo animation as it’s 7 episodes. Waris, Carol Anne and Derren would be able to contribute. Derren is still very active in his 90s and has a book he has written about his life due to come out this autumn. He does have a few stories about Marco Polo, one about the monkey escaping up the studio gantry and chucking it’s poo at the cast and crew below.

    • Gordon

      September 8th, 2026 - 3:18am

They did evil which was also 7 eps including the surviving ep though Marco is far more complex. I’m not ruling out the possibility that plans may have changed from s16 next but I’d have thought they would maybe hold off on season 1 incase there was a recovery even if the decision to skip a Marco animation was made.

I’m pretty sure they will film and bank material even if it’s not out soon. Paul Vanezis said he’s got stuff banked for pretty much every remaing season and Chris chapman has about 18 documentaries in various states (mostly doctor who related but not all of them)

    • RobW

I presume FIF and the BBC are aware of which episodes are that are in the two collections, which might have changed plans

    • Scotel

      September 9th, 2026 - 11:51pm

Given they’ve been aware of (at least) one of those collections for longer than the Collection range has existed I very much doubt it’s affected their plans in any way. When they come back they come back so unless it’s happening immediately they’ll carry on as they are

Agreed I don’t think there will be another Collection Set this year but I believe we might get the Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and the Jodie Whittaker in the U.K. Might not be released at the same time probably over a couple of months apart. I was in my local Top Dog shop in town this afternoon I was shocked to see they didn’t have the full range of Doctor Who on DVD a member of staff said some of the back catalogue of titles on DVD that has been around for 10-20 years are now been deleted and what you will find on their website online once stock is gone it will be removed. I don’t know if this is true but if you check on Amazon a lot of the titles have gone also. So maybe just like the VHS range the DVD is going the same way. So.if your thinking of selling your old DVDs best wait until they disappear then sell them as they will become rare to.find. That’s if it’s true that the back catalogue is been deleted.

Fans just need to remember if they delay more and more the collection will stop.

As bluray wont be a thing.

Lots have no problem getting the Ai not to be noticed.

And other fans struggle and are more vocal.

The other releases did not have Ai.

Once more its due to the auto settings trying to smooth out the image when up grading to 4K.

Which is getting confused by the already treated ai restorAtion.

And because it cant cope you end up with blur.

TURN OFF the setting and come back.

It works fine here on HD TV and none 4k bluray.

      On both devices.

@GallifreyStands the BBC are selling a product so the customers should be allowed to make it clear what they want. If it doesn’t meet the standard then so be it, let the range end, people shouldn’t be expected to buy products they consider subpar, the fans don’t owe anyone anything.

And there is the problem. They used ai heavily on 13 and 21. They used it prior to it in 15 onwards but for them it’s less noticable.

There is nothing wrong with my settings on my tv. If there was the film sequences in season 21 wouldn’t have looked great

Caves looks abysmal on blu ray and nobody saying “change your tv settings” will change my opinion :

The annoying thing is bob outside of the ai usage I have little complaints about the range

I want to know where I can buy one of these players that apparently restores Tom Baker’s AI’d teeth and fingernails – are they ex-FBI? I’ve no idea what this blur thing the poster with three usernames and no apostrophe key is on about though, but it sounds like they’re taking part in a different conversation? It’s great that they’ve solved whatever blur problem they had, but I’m at a loss as to how that relates to AI-generated fake detail…

Yikes Gordon – looking at that youtube video the AI on S21 is awful (I thought that when watching it). Actors are caked in makeup, notably Colin Baker… I wonder if the AI assumed that means they should have plastic looking faces with no visible pours/wrinkles etc?

      No, we haven’t

I’m going to be in the minority here I know it!
I wished they’d used a slight AI upscale on season 17. Only slight. I personally thought City of Death looked un restored, it wasn’t much different from the dvd other than the blu ray made the grain bits look more grainy.
AI definitely has its uses but I agree on season 13’s over use of it.
And for the record, it has nothing to do with tv settings!

I don’t even begin to understand this. These discs are packed with bonus features produced and compiled by humans, for consumption by humans, largely about humans, but the entire set is worthless because some aspects involved the use of AI? There are good uses for AI out there. I’d focus on the bad ones if I were you—Doctor Who Blu-rays aren’t it.

Wonder if they will reduce the space between releases? 2 years seems quite a lot. Someone mentioned the time between stand alone animations and being included on box sets/available on iPlayer maybe cut down from 18months.
Unreal it’s been 2 years since this limited was out…how time is flying

It is a ridiculously long time, but I still always wait. Next one will be season 7, which feels very recent indeed that I was thinking “oh fantastic, I’ll get that in two years when there’s a cheaper version”!

I would guess at end of September or early October for this one. Then I think we might get those 11th12th and 13th USA sets for the UK by the end of the year. The Collection Sets I expected these to slow down as they near the end I still don’t know what they going to do with the 60s sets 1&6 are still possible. This year has reminded me of 1996 when the VHS range was suspended because of the the T.V Movie and were hopes of a new series. And many of the back catalogue of vhs releases were deleted including the recent release of The Hand Of Fear. So before than we were getting at least two stories each month. Then 1996 we only got The Hand Of Fear which i mentioned was deleted just a few months after than was The Movie, and because of the passing of Jon Pertwee they released The Green Death in memory of the Third Doctor. So yeah this year has been very slow so we have had The Collection Season 21, The Movie 30th Anniversary, The Black Archives, then The Collection Season 25 Standard. So for me 2026 has been like 1996 very much in suspended mode at the moment.

So no announcement on the next season collection then. I think it is fair to say we are not going to get the next collection in September or October. If we don’t get announcement by the end of October. We are not getting another collection this year.
Question, if season 16 delayed till early next year.could we get three sets next year?

We’ll not get 3 Limited Edition Seasons next year.

Behind the scenes they might well be looking at the use of AI on future sets causing the delay of Season 16 or that the rumours of 1 set per year are true so ultimately they have longer to work on the 60’s sets.

I suspect the UK market will also get repackaged 11th/12th/13th Doctor sets soon like the USA. With an animation and Season 16 following.

@daz the audience for the collection is not getting any younger.

    • Gordon

      August 27th, 2026 - 10:20am

No chance of 3 next year. Probably be 2 unless it’s delibrately 1 for ai and to give more time to buffer for 60s

Considering the packaging has been consistent since the range started I’m not sure it’s that unless it’s at the manufacturing side which isn’t usually done till late on and usually isnt started till after its anounced. Wouldn’t rule that out as a possibility though

      That was season 26 and that was revealed 3 September and originally anounced for a 23rd of December release but then got delayed till 27th January 2020.       Anyone blaming this on ‘auto upscale’ or ‘tv settings’;

Please just take a moment to carefully watch this comparison video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knuvWVLk6dA

    • The Unlicensed Physician

      August 27th, 2026 - 3:21pm

Gordon: If you don’t have your TV on Filmmaker Mode with the correct upscaling player then you shouldn’t be surprised that teeth go Hollywood, nails are well manicured and aged paving slabs become perfectly laid on Android Invasion. You need the correct setup to restore the organic reality captured on tape, the kind of player that James Cameron tests his 4K remasters on – although that seems to be a one-off, like the TV he had to test the Aliens LaserDisc on (if you haven’t read it, you really should…).

Don’t take “rich” seriously though, it’s a Richard Bignall parody account. Someone posts about Mr Bignall being rude and not understanding what’s AI or not, and he makes a post that’s rude and can’t tell what’s AI or not – there’s a reply to Babelbro on a Collection page that’s really funny.

      @The Unlicensed Physician

Evidently you decided not to watch the comparison video in the YouTube link I posted, 20 minutes prior to your post suggesting Gordon somehow isn’t using the ‘correct’ tv + player settings.

The comparison video I’ve included highlights *precisely* what is wrong with these Collection Blu-ray sets. Peter Crocker and the Restoration Team are applying heavy generative Ai onto the digitised masters using Topaz Ai.

Writing on walls once clearly readable on the dvds and vhs tapes is now turned to mush on the Blu-rays. Actors appear to be growing extra teeth, hair turning to plasticine, actor’s eyes being replaced entirely in distance shots.

None of this is down to Gordon’s tv or media player settings whatsoever.

In fact, anyone could be using the absolute worst tv and media player settings as possible, and it would not match the disaster that is heavy Ai, heavy DNR, severe digital revisionisms applied by choice on these Blu-rays by Peter Crocker and the restoration team.

      If you, Rich, DeliveryRus and anyone else prefers the Blu-rays despite all of those drawbacks, that’s absolutely your preference, and of course there’s many on the internet that are fully aware of the drawbacks, but still prefer the look of the Blu-rays no matter what. It’s personal taste at the end of the day;

But to get snarky / trolling at guys like Gordon and plenty of other fans that pay their hard earned money on these sets and give a perfectly entitled, constructive, informative, detailed technical review and critique of the sets isn’t “really funny” it’s sore loser behaviour.

Richard Bignell made himself a butt joke on Twitter for a reason, because he threw his toys out the pram the milisecond Matthew Purchase shared screenshots of the Season 13 Blu-ray showing the mess caused by Ai. It’s like the very people in charge cannot hack it and cannot take the heat when their sh1t gets called out.

But that’s fine because we’re gonna keep going 🙂

    • The Unlicensed Physician

      August 27th, 2026 - 5:21pm

I thought the joke was extremely obvious… How can any player undo AI damage that’s redrawn the picture? (The James Cameron clue should really have removed any subtlety…) And you know from previous discussions that I stopped buying the sets because of fiddling, before most other people even – Season Two was too processed for me and I sold it.

    • The Unlicensed Physician

      August 27th, 2026 - 5:38pm

Hang on, it was only a couple of days ago we were discussing Paul V’s sympathetic B7 work vs. the less good work on the Who sets. It’s always nice to be remembered…

    • Babelbro

      August 28th, 2026 - 3:59pm

Tbh unless you leave a or a emoji then there’s zero distinction between what you had intended to be sarcasm versus what the pro-ai-blu-ray brigade type back in all seriousness.

What’s worse is that review channels on YouTube are paid a lot of money to say very nice things about ai physical releases like the Doctor Who Collection. Just about every review of Seasons 13 + 21 conveniently avoided actually watching the main feature episodes.

“The Doctor Who Guide” channel for example, also did an unboxing for a recent collection limited edition – the disc tray glue was total cr@p, so the tray ripped away from the rear internal artwork, causing the discs and tray to completely fall out and land with a thud on the table on camera. Instead of editing it or express any disappointment that any one of the discs could’ve been busted, he literally gives the least fussed, if cheery “Oh well, anyway” as if it’s fine for a £50 – £60 set to be collapsing in on itself.

      Hmmm
