“You touched some of that green substance, from that cracked jar, didn’t you? Just a little, but it’s enough to infect you.”

The Doctor and UNIT are called in to investigate a murder at Project Inferno. The project is an experimental venture run by a Professor Stahlmann, who plans to drill through the Earth’s crust to release a previously untapped source of energy.

A maintenance worker is repairing a broken drill and discovers a mysterious green liquid leaking from the pipe. It soon transpires that this liquid infects all who touch it, transforming them into savage primeval creatures called Primords, who crave heat and can only be killed with extreme cold. Unbeknownst to anyone, Professor Stahlmann has also been infected and is in the early stages of transformation.

After an angry exchange with Professor Stahlmann, the Doctor attempts an experiment on the detached TARDIS console, but a freak accident transports him “sideways in time” into a parallel Universe where the drilling project is at a more advanced stage…
