Third Doctor & Tardis Set

  • Third Doctor as seen in The Time Monster
  • Tardis (Non Electronic) with black base

The Tardis can travel to any point in space and time and is bigger on the inside then the outside due to trans-dimensional engineering – a key Timelord discovery.

It has a library, swimming pool, a large boot room, an enormous chamber jammed with clothes and many more nooks and crannies just waiting to be discovered.

Just like The Doctor The Tardis tends to stand out a bit.

Its exterior should blend in with it’s surroundings, conforming to a new environment within a moment of arriving there, but this handy facility was lost years ago when it’s chameleon circuit developed a fault.

Since then, except for a brief period of somewhat random metamorphoses the Tardis has retained the outer appearance of a British Police Box.

There’s a sneaking suspicion that the Doctor could fix the fault if he wanted to, but he chooses not to tinker because he likes the old girl looks.

B&M was formed in 1978 and is now one of the leading variety retailers in the UK.

I don’t suppose that we have a date for when these come out ? I need that 12th doctor set

its on the system for early august at the moment

Somone on Twitter said 6th August and in stores shortly after.

My main concern is the price (I’d like to get several if price allows)

      June 6th, 2018 - 3:00pm

Given how cheap the 3-pack figure sets are, and the fact that it’s non-electronic, it’ll probably be less than £20, maybe £15.

This is gonna be my topset never got any classic tardis as all ended up long gone and hard to find now

  • Ian

    May 22nd, 2018 - 2:53pm

Looking at the photo above couple of nice details. First the weathered look and the accurate font of the Police Box sign. Every other classic Tardis uses the Nu Who font.

    • TigerMan1995

      May 24th, 2018 - 4:57am

No, this still uses the New Series font. Sorry, it’s just cheaper to do that.

Unless they keep the style of the last few Collectors sets and wait to do that after the new series

    • Anonymous

      June 1st, 2018 - 6:06pm

If these are out in august, they’ll most likely still be in stores when the series starts airing, they’ll want all merch to have a uniform branding by that point, so these will most certainly have new 2018 logos /branding layout, whatever that may be…

Some people are unhappy that is non-electornic but personally it makes it easier to record as i don’t need to worry that i have left the electrics on and i add my own sound effects anyway.

I know some are disappointed by the Tardis not being electronic.. I am not too bothered , just glad to have another Tardis.

  • Temporal Engineer

The TARDIS is cool, the base colour is open to interpretation… In this screen grab from The Time Monster:

    https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/tardis/images/a/a0/Time_Monster.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20110911180302

It appears to be the normal blue (but the light ‘shade’ is definitely black).

Where as in this one from the same story:

    https://firebreathingdimetrodon.files.wordpress.com/2017/10/who-timemonster04.jpg

It appears to be a blackened/dirty blue base.

In Spearhead from Space the base also seems dirtied to the point of black:

    http://www.thedoctorscompanion.us/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/LWR_0301.jpg

So I think it’s a clever use of repainting and can certainly be classed as ‘canon’.

    • Bundy

      May 17th, 2018 - 3:16pm

Under the Season 17 entry there are a few images where there is a black base too

    • whovian

      May 18th, 2018 - 8:42am

Looking at all the images, it just looks as though she has landed in muck, making the base just a bit dirty. The toy clearly just makes it look like a full on black base. But still, i am in no way complaining and this will look great next to my 9/10th TARDIS and my white-windowed 12th Doctor TARDIS. Plus ive also got my custom ooak TARDIS that i tried to base off the original capsule that is shown in TNOTD when Clara tells the Doctor which ship to steal. A custom that im proud of.

    • Bundy

      May 18th, 2018 - 9:07am

IMDB has some images from Ian Levine’s animated version of Shada, and the TARDIS has a black base there too which would support that being the actual colour. Don’t know which way the animators have gone with the recent BBC release.

    • TigerMan1995

      May 18th, 2018 - 9:48pm

A Doctor Who History Lesson, researched by Tony Farrell on TARDISBuilders: In 1970, the original prop’s base was tattered and beyond repair and was removed from the prop. This is evident in Terror of the Autons publicity photos with The 3rd Doctor, Jo Grant, The Master, and the TARDIS. A new, temporary base was constructed and painted black. Then the one seen in countless Season 8-13 stories. So the toy takes after this.

    • Ian

      May 19th, 2018 - 4:57pm

Tardis base was only black in Spearhead as it was put on a black plinth. Anyway im not too bothered.

    • Bundy

      May 19th, 2018 - 5:35pm

TigerMan1995’s post put me to the TARDISBuilder site, and there is a discussion of when it was black for a few consecutive stories in the Tom Baker era too (picture in last post on page 1)

      http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=k28feb6j5qlvkmldvdffiipup5&topic=250.0

It is amazing that this detail has passed so many of us by over the years, yet it was not only noticed by CO but was put forward as an option, and that option was taken up by B&M.

    • Ian

      May 22nd, 2018 - 11:02am

That prop is the season 17. The one B&M are releasing is season 9/10s version. Guys if you have Twitter ask Clayton Hickman..mans a mind full of Tardis triva. He has said this prop never had a black base.

    • TigerMan1995

      May 23rd, 2018 - 3:10am

booboo, I have to edit my previous post as I misremembered the TARDISBuilders thread by Tony Farrell.

    • Bundy

      May 23rd, 2018 - 7:14am

In real world terms, is this not just a reprint of the CO Tom Baker TARDIS release – and was that not the same design as the prop used in Season 17?

I’m thinking that whatever CO/B&M are callling it, if it fits TV cannon under Tom Baker then folk may wish to position it within their collection/display as that version.

Either way I still think there is going to be run on blue model paint….lol

    • booboo

      May 23rd, 2018 - 7:43am

it is, but then all the “Classic” Character Tardis are the same mould just with different tops and finishes

The 3rd doctor Tardis had a Black base in spearhead in the lab and a black lamp surround in other episodes so its sort of a combination

    • Bundy

      May 23rd, 2018 - 7:16am

      Doh! “repaint” not “reprint”

    • TigerMan1995

      May 23rd, 2018 - 4:42pm

Yes, What Tony had said was that in Spearhead the base was damaged and the prop was put on a shallow plinth cover in a black wrapping. Then in Terror it was completely gone during on location and in the studio the prop was put on a new base.

    • TigerMan1995

      May 23rd, 2018 - 4:44pm

Also the 4th Doctor TARDIS seemed to based on the Season 12/13 TARDIS as Purpleblancmange who designed the TARDISes for Character and Forbidden Planet wanted it to be a Season 12/13. (Of course it’s not exact to Character using the same mold as the 7th Doctor’s) So the Season 12/13 is the same as the Season 8-11 TARDIS to clarify why they used it. At least it’s getting made again.

    • Finley Wade

      June 8th, 2018 - 5:55pm

I can deal with the black base but the color is all wrong for me. When I think of the 3rd doctor’s TARDIS I envision the darker, dirtier design used later in Pertwee’s tenure. I love that TARDIS and would much prefer that version to be made instead of this one. Plus, the darker color would contrast less with the black base than the lighter one.

  • Shane Cook

    May 17th, 2018 - 5:20am

There are at least 5 basic Pertwee repaints we could still get.

Red Jacket – no tie Frill shirt (Terror of the Autons, Day of the Daleks etc..)
Black jacket – no tie Frill shirt, with boots (Colony in Space)
Green Jacket – Green Bow Tie, light green shirt (Monster of Peladon)
Red Jacket – Black and prurple Cloak with Coloured Ascot (Daemons)
Red Jacket – Black and Blue Cloak with Coloured Ascot (Mutants)

Still think a 5 Doctors set would sell very well. As they appeared in the publicity pics

    • Anonymous

I don’t know if people I’ll appreciate them making the Season 18 Fourth Doctor so yellow and waxy after waiting so long for it to be rereleased

    • TigerMan1995

      May 23rd, 2018 - 3:17am

Just put the 13 Doctors Set version into that set. Then it would make that figure more available. I expect a Richard Hurndall figure as he looked different than Hartnell (not too different but different nonetheless).

    • booboo

      May 23rd, 2018 - 7:45am

A Hurndall figure was sculpted for the 2nd 11 Doctor sset that never got made and it looked excellent

it was said it will never see the light of day now.

    • The Outcast

      May 23rd, 2018 - 10:33am

That would be a huge a shame if that figure is never released.

      June 1st, 2018 - 4:08am

A new set or more accurate re releases of classic daleks would do better for this whovian specially to get easier if there are usa releases 🙂 maybe an all talking invasion earth set of 4 daleks, 2 drones (the silver and the black eye variants thus a re release of the wave 1 and just the second variant that appeared on the serial, talking version too) and that would mean a re release of the dalek saucer commander from collector set 2 but in a new talking variant with the sought (and rare by this days mint and out of the box) the first supreme black dalek from invasion earth. + a full pack re release of the black and white versions, there should by default be a pertwee black and white version as some places his era was broadcasted B&W too (I dont remember that one very well)

    May 16th, 2018 - 10:11pm

oh boy! So getting this, I haven’t got a 70’s TARDIS, great for Jon Pertwee animations… I could do a sequel to a Doctor Who/Scooby Doo project I did in 2014! plus I haven’t got the red jacket… so it’d be better for chroma keying instead of the green one which annoyed me that I had to do split CSO green/blue/yellow screen for all the characters when needed.

  • Tardis_Team_YT

    May 16th, 2018 - 4:32pm

I don’t know whether I’m overly fond with black base because I thought in the show it was blue no matter what episode especially in the time monster .

    • booboo

      May 16th, 2018 - 4:41pm

there are couple of instances where it could have been black, but also possibly just a shadow

i think though, this was the only way we would get a “3rd Doctors Tardis” and i can see already its proving very popular

and you never know if its works well just maybe we could get the unreleased but prototyped 5th Doctor Tardis

Am I going completely mental or since when has the TARDIS had a black base? Not complaining though as its great to have new figures.

    • booboo

      May 15th, 2018 - 5:03pm

well on the odd occasion it appeared to have, although some think its a shadow or the base is wrapped up

    • Shane Cook

      May 16th, 2018 - 2:29am

The 4th Doctor’s had it, between Mandragora and Shada. No idea why CO decided to put it onto a 3rd Doctor’s release. Base was not as thick on 3rd or 4th’s Tardises so it is easily missed.

    • Bundy

      May 16th, 2018 - 7:38am

I expect sales of blue model paint will increase at the time of this release.
If this is the final colour scheme (and I am holding out hope there is a change before it goes into production) this has to be one of the most niche variants CO have ever done. Die hard fans are struggling to remember or find a clear instance of a 3rd Doctor TARDIS that has a full black base. Many of the images shared look to be shadows or set build errors rather than a deliberate design decision.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll gleefully take this any day over nothing, but would have preferred it the light blue colour all over – it would still be a variant compared to the dark blue 4th Doctor issue.

    • TigerMan1995

      May 16th, 2018 - 4:40pm

The TARDIS prop had a black base a few times early Season 8.

    • Bundy

      May 17th, 2018 - 6:14am

Wow – just been looking at boobo’s TARDIS exterior page and the screen grabs from Shada (and very probably the Horns of Nimon and Nightmare of Eden) show a black base. Never noticed that before. So this works as a 4th Doctor variant too!

    • Anonymous

      May 17th, 2018 - 9:53pm

Looking at images of the TARDIS I think the paint on the base was worn out . There is a picture of it on the grass which makes it look like it’s covered which makes sense to protect it . Could be either or 🙂

  • lee moone

    May 15th, 2018 - 3:11pm

    Good news.

    • lee moone

      May 16th, 2018 - 1:32pm

Yes, but if you don’t ask! It’s the only Dr that has not had a decent variant. The older two Dr’s was frankly rubbish!

    • The Outcast

      May 16th, 2018 - 2:07pm

They did have a Fur coat 2 in the works for a while and you can find images of it floating around, but they never were able to find someone who wanted to take it on as an exclusive sadly. Maybe they will find someone one day…

    • booboo

      May 16th, 2018 - 2:18pm

sadly with the USA market gone by the looks of it i doubt we will see any new classics, there are simply no retailers big enough now in the UK to take them on

best hope is variants whilst B&M are still interested

    • The Outcast

      May 16th, 2018 - 3:14pm

I hope one day we might get the Fur coat 2nd Doctor in a B&M set, but I doubt it, as it probably hasn’t been tooled. 🙁

  • The Outcast

    May 15th, 2018 - 2:52pm

I’m a bit disappointed this is non-electronic. The classic TARDISes don’t really have much in the way of electronics, yes, but unless this has been remolded, it’s still going to have the battery compartment and switches. I also don’t understand why this needs to be non-electronic, because all the TARDISes are electronic if you don’t put batteries in.

I’ll still try and get this TARDIS, but they should have just kept the very few electronics in.

    • Anonymous

      May 15th, 2018 - 3:39pm

It would depend on how expensive the electronics are and how that would work out, relative to how many units CO will be producing. It could have drove the price up by quite a margin, but anything that could discourge th non-diehard whovian from an impulse buy is to be avoided for these to succeed most.

    • Merlin

      May 15th, 2018 - 5:47pm

      £££

And to be fair, this version of the TARDIS didn’t work anyway, it just kinda smoked a bit

    • Grant

      May 16th, 2018 - 12:19am

The electronics are usually a novelty anyway. This way the set will be quite a bit cheaper, so I’m all for that

    • Anonymous

      May 16th, 2018 - 9:28pm

Most collectors (who, I’d assume are the majority on this site) only display there figures and sets rather than actually play with them.

    May 15th, 2018 - 2:44pm

I’m gobsmacked! What a surprise! No warning! This Third Doctor figure set looks amazing! Not only Pertwee’s Doctor but Pertwee’s TARDIS aswell! All big figs too!

  • DalekBoy

    May 15th, 2018 - 1:51pm

Well, I’m going to guess this might be around £12 seeing as it’s b an m, 2 figures and non electronic. Also it will sell really well

    • booboo

      May 15th, 2018 - 2:04pm

I think it will be more than that to be honest

    • Who Knows

I’d say £19.99 would be the likely estimate.

    • Who Knows

      May 15th, 2018 - 4:51pm

I believe the Toys R Us Christmas Adventure Set (11th Doctor, Amy Pond in Police Uniform and the Non Electronic Tardis) was retailed originally at £29.99 and then it was reduced – also just suggesting potentially the highest figure to get an estimate of how much everything will come out to.

    • booboo

      May 15th, 2018 - 5:07pm

I know the RRP’s have not been set yet, my gut felling is £17.99 – £19.99 a set possibly £24.99 for the Tardis

I think it should be noted that B&M are not going to invest 10’s of thousands of pounds in these sets without a good return on their investment

not so long ago toys r us were charging £14.99 for one straight re-release

even at £19.99 these sets are very good value

Wasn’t the B&M Time Squad Set with Money Box 12th Doctor TARDIS around £20? If so, I expect this will cost a bit more than that.

The original price of the classic Tardiss were £34.99. The 12th Doctors was £15 In TRU. So as this has a figure I’d say £20. No reason to be more.

Booboo I can’t beleive that I asked if any news the day before the images came out , and wow! Will probably get like 12 and 3 w/ tardis, but I got the 4 dr set , last year so might not this year, I might get 11

Well bless my soul. They are AMAZING. This is the best BM set yet. Probably have the same luck i always do though. Every time I go to get them there is never any on the shelves

I NEED THESE IN MY LIIIFE – – 3rd Doctor TARDIS aaand 4th Doctor from Talons of Wang Chiang?! A 12th Doctor in his red velvet coat, a Bill plus the best looking Amy Pond?? They knocked these out of the freaking park!

      May 16th, 2018 - 11:58pm

These are a good bunch of sets. Have to admit I’m not fussed about Amy, and I’d have preferred a new variant of Clara – my favourite – rather than another Oswin, but aside from those things and a couple other nit-picks, I can’t really complain 🙂

Question: is this TARDIS accurate? I see a lot of people arguing the toss over the black base, but I’m more concerned about the mould itself. I thought Pertwee’s TARDIS was a different design to Baker’s?

      Hi Adam,
I don’t think this TARDIS is accurate to Pertwee’s and I think this is just a reprint of the 4th Doctors TARDIS. I don’t care if it’s not 100% Peetwee accurate, it’s a Classic TARDIS that can be used with any Doctor you want!

Fair enough, can’t argue with that 🙂

I wonder why they have given the Doctor a white cravat. In the Time Monster he had the shirt collar open.

Maybe there were issues with the sculpt which would be to expensive to sort out, and this was the closest alternative.

      May 15th, 2018 - 7:11am

To be fair they could’ve also just used the sculpt from the 4th Doctor regeneration figure, that would’ve been a little more accurate

      May 15th, 2018 - 7:21am

as explained may not be compatible or tooling blocks make it non viable

you can kit bash on the work bench but not so much on a production line

    • Anonymous

      May 15th, 2018 - 2:52pm

This is a prototype. The real one is the has the regeneration 4th dr body

    • booboo

      May 15th, 2018 - 2:57pm

do you have an accurate source for that?

    • WouldYouLikeAJellyBaby?

      May 15th, 2018 - 3:05pm

Anonymous, if you’re referring to the original image for this set, that was a kitbashed prototype that would’ve required additional tooling to make the costume accurate so it’s highly unlikely we won’t recieve that in the finished product.

      May 15th, 2018 - 3:11pm

those were also provisional “internal images” which were quickly changed to the more accurate pre production samples.

How much do people estimate this will be?

    • Juntos

      May 15th, 2018 - 7:03am

      I’d say around £40-£70

    • LastOfTheSonics

      May 15th, 2018 - 7:30am

I say £20-30. Anything above that wouldn’t sell for a place like this.

    • Ian

      May 15th, 2018 - 10:45am

£15-£20. I can see why the 3rd Drs Tardis is non electronic. Would add to the cost.

Since they are doing this do you think it is possible for a new SW dalek, Ainley Master and a classic sontaran to be released in next year’s wave.

    • Anonymous

      May 14th, 2018 - 10:40pm

Anything is possible (although, I believe there is some trouble with ainleys family/estate that has prevented us from getting a rerelease of his master yet), but dalek and sontarans are deffinately possible

    • the_4th_doc

      May 15th, 2018 - 1:44am

The SW Dalek would have to be single but I reckon it’s a no brainer given it’s current rarity, I heard somewhere about issues with using Ainley’s likeness, and it would probably have to be the Planet of Fire version cause the coat would require retooling/new scupts. Classic sontaran is most likely I would say.

    • Ian

      May 15th, 2018 - 10:47am

As far as I know it was CO who didn’t want another Ainley Master. Always given me excuses like they couldn’t get more than one release out of it. That is nonsence.

    • Bundy

      May 15th, 2018 - 6:02pm

It seems such a waste to have the head sculpt and not release a velvet suit version. Whilst not being perfect there are hopefully some kit bashing/clever painting options available to CO that could deliver something akin to the classic look in a future B&M release.

I’m a SO EXCITED for this! I wonder if it’ll be boxed the same as the forbidden planet tardis’, or if it’ll have the new logo on?

    • Anonymous

      May 14th, 2018 - 9:11pm

Everything from now on is to have the 2018 logo, especially since it won’t be long till series 11 by the time these come out…

    May 14th, 2018 - 9:05pm

How ironic that they announce this the day after I spend £80 on a classic TARDIS set on eBay.

    • Sam

      May 14th, 2018 - 9:09pm

They’re so expensive on ebay these days aren’t they. At least this one should be at a good price!

    • Anonymous

      May 14th, 2018 - 11:30pm

Yeah… but this is non electronic. Always more fun with the electronics
