BBC Studios announces Tom Baker’s final series as the next instalment in the DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION Blu-ray range

BBC Studios continues to offer Doctor Who fans the opportunity to build their own home archive on Blu-ray. Following the sell-out success of Tom Baker’s debut season, his seventh and final series will be released on 25th February as Doctor Who – The Collection: Season 18.

Tom Baker’s final year saw the programme undergo radical changes in front of the cameras and behind the scenes.

Producer John Nathan-Turner revamped the series with new writers, new directors, a new title sequence and theme arrangement, glossy production standards and – throughout the course of the season – a brand new regular cast. Over seven classic adventures the Doctor and his companions encountered the Foamasi, Meglos, the Marshmen, vampires and Tharils, building to a final deadly showdown between the Doctor and his arch nemesis the Master.

As a special bonus this set also includes the 1981 K9 & Company Christmas pilot episode, plus hours of brand new material.

Starring alongside Tom Baker are Lalla Ward as Romana, Matthew Waterhouse as Adric, Sarah Sutton as Nyssa, Janet Fielding as Tegan, Anthony Ainley as the Master, Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah-Jane Smith and John Leeson as K9.

Special Features exclusive to this set include:

  • New Making-Of documentary and updated special effects for Logopolis
  • Revealing new 2019 commentaries moderated by Matthew Sweet (Tom Baker on The Leisure Hive, Lalla Ward & Rachel Davies on State Of Decay)
  • Surround sound mix for Warriors’ Gate
  • Rare behind-the-scenes footage from The Leisure Hive, Full Circle and Logopolis
  • Eight more editions of Behind The Sofa
  • Brand new documentaries The Writers Room and Weekend With Waterhouse
  • New interview with K9 & Company’s Ian Sears
  • Another dip into the Panopticon convention archives with Tom Baker
  • HD photo galleries plus scripts, production files and rare documentation provided as PDFs
  • The eight-disc box set also includes hours of extensive special features previously released on DVD.

All material has been remastered for Blu-ray by Peter Crocker and Mark Ayres. Lee Binding has provided stunning packaging and new series writer/content consultant Pete McTighe has written another extensive booklet. Russell Minton is Executive Producer.

Blu-ray trivia: when filming took place for Logopolis (1980), Tom Baker’s last adventure, the intention was to shoot at the University of Manchester’s Jodrell Bank Observatory. Instead, production took place at Crowsley Park with the team using model shots.

For the brand new Blu-ray, almost 40 years later, BBC Studios received permission to film at Jodrell Bank with a drone. Offered as an alternative viewing option, fans will now be able to experience the finished product just as it was originally intended.

DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION – SEASON 18 includes the following stories from 1980/81:

  • The Leisure Hive (four episodes)
  • Meglos (four episodes)
  • Full Circle (four episodes)
  • State Of Decay (four episodes); Warriors’ Gate (four episodes)
  • The Keeper Of Traken (four episodes)
  • Logopolis (four episodes)
  • plus K9 & Company – A Girl’s Best Friend.

RRP: £56.16

I have pre orders with hmv, i contacted them and they replied with the below:
      Thank you for contacting us.

Further to our previous email please be assured that at the time of writing this email we are aiming to fulfil all outstanding pre-orders. Should this change, we will contact the affected customers as soon as possible.

Not heard since, so no news is good news. Especially with then now being saved!

I posted this earlier this week:-
“HMV’s online store is currently shut down while it is being revamped, but Putman says he hopes it will reopen in the next few weeks. He wants to add services such as the ability to check if a certain title is in a particular store in future.”

So what is the next few rumoured sets

    Is it

    Season 10
    Season 26

so I am thinking after those they might make another Tom Baker set as Fourth Doctor stuff tends to sell very well was the causal public

It’s best if they do a Fourth Doctor set every one or two sets. So they range doesn’t die off quick.

Just in terms of numbers we’ll probably end up with a Tom Baker set every year (assuming three sets a year).

    • Robert Sienicki

      February 14th, 2019 - 10:55am

I think so as well. Three sets per year and one of them will be Tom Baker. I think mostly because he will not be with us forever, so they might want to get as many bonus features from him while they can.
I would think that season 10 will be next, season 26 right after that and at the beginning of the next year we should get season 17.

Hey Gordon, do you know why they find problems making and delaying it? Is it to do with updating the surround sound? The updated special effects? Or is it the blu-ray features?

My email now says March 18th although mine is going to an Amazon Locker and that normally means it will still arrive on the release date. Clearly we all want the product right first time, but isn’t it a bit amateurish that a release date can’t be met. I wouldn’t want to have ordered one of these as a present or something….

All depends on how quickly things go back to normal in terms of getting delivery’s from suppliers. They also have a month of backlog of new releases to catch up on as well and stock that has run low needs replenished.new releases will obviously take priority but it will be interesting to see how long that will take.

Gordon, what do you think of the rumours of a season 24 blu ray boxset

    • Duncan Parsons

      February 6th, 2019 - 1:01pm

The new owner has based all his other record stores on physical music sales especially on vinyl sales. So I’m guessing he’ll want to get that up and running first then get the other parts of the business going after.

    • Gordon

      February 6th, 2019 - 8:37pm

Haven’t really heard anything about season 24. Can’t really see it happening too soon. Its pretty much an open secret that season 26 is being worked on and I can’t see them wanting 2 McCoy seasons out so close together. Considering season 24 is always near the bottom of season rankings I always saw it as a season that would be done nearer the 2nd half of the range. It could very well be that they are banking extras for it in the same way that lalla has done some extras for city of death as she is moving to Hong Kong shortly. Only seasons I’ve heard rumours are

Season 10: Australian email and Katy manning and Stewart Bevan did some filming in wales in November for a documentary which suggests green death extras

Season 14/15: Louise Jameson has recorded extras. Most likely for 1 of these seasons but could just as well be for more behind the sofas.

Season 17: Lalla Ward and Catherine Schell have done a city of death documentary

Season 22: terry mollloy filmed a documentary with Toby hadoke over the weekend to do with the doctor who cookbook and was cooking items from it. The cookbook was released not long after season 22 and terry was a part of 2 stories that season. Also with the subject matter of food in 2 doctors and revelation of the Daleks it seems like the perfect place to put it.

Season 26: one of the actress that worked on curse of fenric says that she has been filmed for a documentary for season 26 which she says is due in Christmas 2019

Has anyone seen on Twitter Richard Bignell? He does research for the boxsets and some restoration work too, he’s tweeted a fair few teasers of Season 18 and alluding to the fact there’s definitely more to come this year. There’s a great screen grab of Wendy reacting to the hair of a character in Meglos looks to be a funny set of Behind the Sofa’s.

Not really an issue or anything to do with this, but i recommend that anyone who pre-orders from Amazon, to use their ‘Top Up’ Service. Basically works on the same basics as a gift card, but it is also a digital wallet that will allow you to pay for anything upfront.

10 sounds like it’s the most likely unless it’s been a massive misdirection and it’s something else, but I’m sure it wouldn’t be another Tom set.

All the rumours suggest season 10 now, which would be great, cause Pertwee era was mighty fine. And we would get the Three Doctors there. If they plan to do three per year, then I suspect Tom Baker season will be at least once a year. And rotation for the rest of the Doctors. Would love season 20, but I feel like they will try to put Colin and Sylvester as well, cause they need to get them for the extras when there is still time.

The trailer had tom John and June on 1 sofa so I’m guessing Janet Sarah and Wendy are on the other sofa

Forgive me for asking a question about season 12 but it seems this thread is more active and likely to get a response than the season 12 thread. I have made my peace with the fact that they will never re-release the season 12 boxset and will refrain from expressing my anger again! My question is what would be the best option for a UK viewer that has missed the physical UK release? Would it be to buy the US Blurays (60i) or to buy the Amazon streaming version which I assume would be 50i (but de-interlaced as it is delivered on the web). Any opinions?

Unfortunately that isn’t an option. I can’t find any Australian copies apart from in Australia that refuse to ship to the UK. If anyone knows how to lay their hands on an Australian copy in the UK that isn’t being sold at over £300 (as most of them seem to be – lol) that would be great!

The original format video tape recordings are very primitive by todays standards and have not been improved much in restoration to blue ray.
I think the upscaling on the blue rays is marginal imo and i was quite disappointed in the results when compared to the remastered dvds. The upside is Blue ray discs are more hardy and likely to last longer in storage. At current collectors prices, poor value imo and spend your money wisely on other things.

Can some one give me an honest answer. Is it worth getting these sets? Apart from a few new extras and a pretty box I can’t see much difference to the dvds.i missed out on season 12 and if I want it it’s going to cost approximately 250 quid to get it and the BBC have no plans to rerelease it as it’s limited edition.(I got that answer directly from the BBC before anyone asks). I have all the dvds.so I’m not missing out on a particular story. So is it worth it?

    • Lee

      January 13th, 2019 - 11:45pm

Amazon’s pre-order price guarantee means you’ll get it at the price you ordered it for at the time or lower if it gets reduced before release.
But Amazon will never charge you more than what you’ve pre-ordered it for.

As for it being £56 – Amazon’s prices sometimes jump up massively for a few days. I’ve noticed it before, but they’ll go back to normal. I have a blu-ray boxset on my wishlist which was £17.99 but then suddenly jumped up to £30. Within a week it was back down to £17.99 though. I think Amazon’s automated pricing systems just go a little crazy at times! 😀

It’ll probably go back down to £39.99 soon.

    • Lee

      January 19th, 2019 - 3:00pm

I just looked on Amazon today and their prices are still ridiculously high, so Gordon is probably right about them hiking their prices. I’ve seen their prices occasionally go up ridiculously for a day or two, but they usually go back down after that.
The Macra Terror steelbook is currently up from £24.99 to £40.99. Amazon must be nuts if they think people are going to pay that, when they can just go to sites like Zavvi or Zoom and pick it up for around £25.

    • Gordon

      January 5th, 2019 - 9:02am

Most desired I’d probably go for some of the pertwee seasons. That’s my favourite era. 7 8 9 and 11 will probably be a while due to them trying to improve the colour in the likes of ambassadors, mind of evil, invasion of the dinos etc. At least season 10 is in good enough nick that it should be out pretty early. This year if rumours are true. I’d also like to see seasons 3-5. Not so sure they will have time to animate everything by the time they get on to it but there is still is a massive gap of extras and making ofs that could be filled

    • David

      January 5th, 2019 - 4:51pm

The Pertwee years do have some fine moments, and as for the beginnings of the show, I could see them maybe releasing season 2 early-ish as it is one of the seasons with the least amount of missing episodes and probably easiest to animate I imagine. But yeah anything of the black and white days remastered even just a little bit would be amazing! For the many new features like you said that could be made and put together for the sets alone, plus I’d love to see what Lee Binding would do with the covers for the 1st and 2nd doctors. Something special indeed.

Well I have just got a Blu-ray player today. Got season 19 From hmv, last one. So I am really hoping they release 12 again. It’s seams strange to me that they would spend money on new extras just to release it once.

The US Version is still available
      I would buy that

I don’t think it’ll get a re-release now. A few people have emailed the BBC and they said it was only going to be a limited run.
If you really want it, your best bet is to go for the U.S. version.

To be honest, my season 12 disc trays have come unglued already, so the limited edition packaging isn’t really all that impressive. The artwork is nice, but it’s not a deal breaker for me – it’s still just cardboard at the end of the day. The disc contents are more important to me, and the extras are definitely worth it.

If you try to scan the 16mm film of the telerecording, what will it be?

A digital copy of a film copy of a television screening. You aren’t going to magically invent details through scanning it. A television only has so much resolution.

Do you think season 10 may be released in July. Given July would have been the great Jon Pertwee’s 100th birthday.

I’m thinking may. 3 months between the original release date of 19 and season 18.

Got the latest DWM special edition today. Russell Minton says they are hoping to release all 26 seasons and that seasons 1-6 won’t be the final 6 releases so i reckon we’ll get seasons 1, 2 and 6 sooner ratherjmes than later

While that is good to hear, just remember to be careful with our expectations.

Season 6 is probably a safe bet in the near future, the others will be risks and depending on the release rate and the fate of a particular episode we may very well see Season 5 fully animated before Seasons 1 or 2.

With the rumours of fury and wheel next year would not surprise me if 5 was also coming sooner rather than later

I think that time frame is far too optimistic. I have no doubts the animation team wants to do The Wheel in Space next but ultimately it is in the BBC’s hands as to whether or not they commission it or go for something else entirely. Saying that, I expect a Season 5 release to be quite far off given the unfortunate situation with The Web of Fear.

It is also worth noting this collection will take several years to complete, so there is plenty of time to get through Seasons 1, 2, 5 and 6.

That’s not what the rumours suggest. It’s fury that’s being animated next not wheel. Considering they got it spot on about macra and the blu ray season release order so far I think it’s a good chance that it will be next. It also fits in with previous missing stories (completely missing). Sure they animated 10 minutes of wheel for the bfi but if the plan is to animate the rest why animate Jamie with the wrong costume? Surely they would have to redo a good chunk of it when they get round to doing the 4 eps in full.

Because there’s a difference between what the animation team wanted to do given a bit of extra free time (The Wheel in Space short) and what the BBC wants (which is apparently Fury from the Deep).and ultimately it’s the BBC paying for it.

I just advise caution in the time frames. If we get something else next year then that’s brilliant, but I’m expecting early 2020 for the next project.

If you don’t mind my asking, what are the rumors about Fury and Wheel, exactly? Are they planning to animate them, or is the word on the town that they’ve found something? I’d be over the moon if they found anything from Fury, and Wheel would be welcome too.

OK, I see now it’s an animation rumor. That’s cool, but I still hope they’ll find some actual missing episodes. Still, I’m eagerly anticipating Series 18 and The Macra Terror’s release in the States.

Hope they do the new series in the exact same way with lots of glorified extras – as the new dvds lack the special feature repertoire the classics have. I also would really like Sarah Jane Adventures split over two releases and Torchwood over two as well – that would be the icing on the dr who cake

Maybe in the future but I think they are focusing on the classic series for now.

Most likely, yes. Season 19 has film segments, I suspect 18 does too.

It has the title sequence and the Brighton beach segment exists. Not sure about any others

Some of the motorway scenes from “Logopolis” do still exist and all model and effect scenes from “State of decay”. Plus the aforementioned beach scenes
