Doctor Who: UNIT Support Teams

The United Nations Intelligence taskforce (later the Unified Intelligence Taskforce), or UNIT, was an international military organisation established to keep tabs on and combat where necessary paranormal and extraterrestrial threats to Earth. The organisation even kept the Doctor on its payroll for a period, beginning when he was exiled on Earth during his third incarnation.

The organisation even kept the Doctor on its payroll for a period, beginning when he was exiled on Earth during his third incarnation.

Doctor Who: Silurians

In 2020, a group of Silurians were awoken by a major drilling operation. Having never been fond of the human “apes” anyway, it was misinterpreted as a deliberate attack. With hostages at risk, the Eleventh doctor was forced to broker a peace between the two races. Pack contains the following metal figures:

Doctor Who: Imperial Daleks

Also known as gold sphere Daleks, the Imperial Daleks were loyal to their creator, Davros. They were created in the aftermath of the Dalek-Movellan war, at about the time a schism wrenched the Daleks into warring factions. In 1963, the self-proclaimed Imperial Emperor led his creations to Coal Hill to secure the Hand of Omega, contending not only with their renegade foes but the intervention of the Seventh Doctor.

Doctor Who: Remembrance Of The Daleks – Heroes

In this classic Seventh Doctor story, he and new companion Ace McShane return to where it all began, Coal Hill School, the site of the First Doctor’s inaugural TV adventure. There they discover that the Daleks are attempting to recover stolen Time Lord technology that the Doctor had left on Earth all those years before.

Doctor Who: Remembrance Of The Daleks – Villains

The Daleks seek to recover stolen Gallifreyan technology left by the Doctor at Coal Hill school on Earth, which would give them the means to perfect their own time-travel technology and access all time and space.

Doctor Who: Web Of Fear

After the TARDIS narrowly avoids falling prey to a mysterious substance in space, it materialises in a London Underground overrun by the web-like material. It transpires that it had been produced by the robot Yeti of the Great Intelligence, one of which had been inadvertently reactivated by Professor Travers, whom they had met thirty years earlier in the Himalayas.

Doctor Who: Night Of The Doctor

After trying and failing to save a woman, Cass Fermazzi, who resents him for simply being a Time Lord, the Eighth Doctor meets his demise when the ship she is piloting crashes onto a remote planet. Restored by an elixir of life administered by the Sisterhood of Karn, the Doctor is forced to choose what man he will be regenerate into.

Doctor Who: Second Doctor & Companions

“When I say run, run!” Exhibiting a darker, more cunning personality than his previous incarnation, the Second Doctor hid these newfound traits to achieve his schemes most effectively, appearing, to the uninitiated, as warm and slightly clumsy; sometimes nicknamed the ‘Cosmic Hobo’.

At this point, it’s going to be hard to find 75 worth of figures to buy to get the promo sets. On the US site, at least, nearly everything is sold out, and the UK site isn’t much better.

If I weren’t confident that I’d mess up the painting, I’d probably have spent a fortune on these before it was too late!
    Good luck, everyone!

I just looked and was thinking the same. I wonder if they made any money on this range? Their figures seemed to be very good sculpts.

But their best stuff is these multipacks, especially the Remembrance stuff.

I will be painting painting them when I get the chance. I paint Lord Of the Rings/Hobbit models so have practice and will be fun to try some of these characters later. Still haven’t done any yet and I have most of them. LotR takes priority because I use them in games.
Despite separate delivery emails both orders arrived together in one box complete with 2 extra Sycorax leaders.
I don’t mind a second one, but will be selling the 3rd. I assume this means if I place 3 orders in November I would get 3 River Songs then, so would add 2 of those to the selling as well.

Sounds good Werewolf, these models certainly are a lot of fun to paint, excellent sculpts.

What company does the LotR models? And are they of a similar size to the Doctor Who ones?

Put my order in, got together just enough to tip over the £75 limit and getting the 2nd Doctor Companions set as my bonus. Looking forward to getting them, a shame it’ll be the last!

I’ve been emailing Warlord Games with a few polite queries. Thought I’d share the outcome in case it helps anyone else.

They can’t mix and match these sets. I asked if I did a £75 order could I get Ben, Polly, Zoe a Dalek and Davros as a set of 5. Such customisation is something they’ve been able to do in the past, but given the nature of these releases it isn’t possible with them in this case. Understandable, but was worth checking.

If you order before the end of October then you automatically get the Sycorax Leader included on orders over £50, getting one of these free sets doesn’t prohibit that.

When discussing the release of these sets I was told their desire to outright sell them was “vetoed”. Who by and why, I don’t know, but thought it was an interesting choice of words and suggests Warlord were denied selling them by the license with the BBC in some way.

As always, the Warlord Games customer service was quick, polite and very helpful. It’s been a pleasure purchasing from and communicating with them and I will miss the range.

You have to spend over £75 to get 1 set free.

Only 1 free set per order so if you wanted several sets you would have to raise separate orders over £75 for each free set.

It’s just cost me over £180 to get 2 free sets.

I’ve been waiting for the UNIT Heroes and the 2nd Doctor & Companions since they were announced on this site pre-Covid so it’s a real shame that they are not continuing with this range.

I’m not quite understanding this is it £75 to spend to get just the imperial daleks or the whole of the remembrance figures coz I’d like to ge the heroes villains and daleks but if thatvmeans it £75 for on each purchase of other sets that are available just to get these remembere figures I think not

I worked on this range for five years – let me tell you the approval process with the beeb was often painful. Actors taking ages to approve models which would hold up the sets. Every one of these models had to be designed, a set professionally painted for promos, approved by the actor/BBC themselves, moulds created (these are expensive as they have to be destroyed after 31st December) – A lot of money has been pumped into these and the contract extension from last April only allowed existing stock to be sold – A lot of pressure from myself and other fans working on the range has resulted in these being produced, literally everything here apart from an Eleventh Doctor in his stetson. For £75 you could purchase the core game which comes with 4 Dalek/Cybermen sprues and another set. These will no doubt be valuable in the future. The moulds of the original boxed releases have already been destroyed, any remaining stock will be melted down. Thank you all for your support over the years 🙂

      Hi Alan,

Thanks for your insight. It is really interesting to know what went on ‘behind the scenes’ and the situation must be really frustrating for all involved.

I only have a few of your figures but the detail especially for the scale is absolutely amazing and the attention and work that goes into them is obvious. It must be awful to think that any unsold stock will have to be melted down. What a waste! I really hope you are able to move on all these figures.

Alan is quite right here & Warlord must have lost a ton of money on these. Personally if I had the spare cash (Which I don’t!) I would shovel them up as quickly as possible. These figures in such limited quantity will be worth a small fortune in the future.

There is no likeness process anymore and hasn’t been for six years. The BBC have slowly been buying up these rights but have also, yet again, licensed characters that aren’t theirs to license without contacting the writers. Expect the Remembrance ones to shuffle off the offer pretty quickly. BBC Licensing keeps issuing licenses to people without checking that they *can*.

I don’t doubt Warlord’s intentions, but they’ve been misled by BBC Licensing if they think they own some of these rights and more so if they think someone is approving likenesses.

Hi Alan, thank you for the info, hearing about the process and some of the issues is much appreciated. More importantly, thank you to you and the whole Warlord team for such a great range of detailed figures. This range really has been a joy to have and it’ll be missed.

As Warlord produce other ranges featuring soldiers hopefully it would be good if they could release the UNIT sets without the names on the bases. Presumably there are no copyright issues on officers and soldiers in army uniforms so could presumably get away with selling them if they didn’t refer to BBC copyright characters or names and fans would recognise them as the UNIT figures having send them previously in this offer. They’re unpainted so even the UNIT badges on the uniforms could represent something else /other regiment.

As somebody who has bought everything to date, even the rare Tomb of the Cybermen kit, this is an absolute no go for me. £750 to get these ten sets (probably more as it will be hard to get it exact)? I understand they were limited to promotional offers and I would be getting other products too, but there surely must have been another way to get these to customers without utterly destroying their savings in the process? It’s buy two get one free, but the only thing I want to buy is the free one and I would very happily have done so if it was at an appropriate price point.

Such a shame that this is the legacy they’ll go out on for me.

Seems like its a BBC Licensing restriction warlord not to actually be able to sell these.

I wonder what will happen to unsold stock, melted down perhaps?

If these had been sold to 3rd party retailers i can see no way the BBC could have stopped those retailers selling them.

Its all a bit of a puzzle to me this.

    • TimelordTim

      October 21st, 2022 - 4:02pm

It is strange they can’t be sold as standard items. They can still sell existing items but not provide new ones, even though they can give away new ones for “free”. May be a weird thing in the license where anything being sold has to be available for at least a certain amount of time, and these wouldn’t be with the license ending at the end of the year. But I have no idea!

I also remember the 2nd and companions set being reported as on the way back in 2019 I think (at the same time they provided a different Jamie figure for Frazer Hines to sell on his website), so some of these may have been around for a while as well. Issues of the past few years got in the way for at least some of them to appear previously I’m sure, such a shame.

I think i read it was the slow approvals for some of the games cards, not the figures that put pay to things, might be wrong on that though.

    • TimelordTim

      October 21st, 2022 - 4:39pm

That’s interesting Booboo, if true it would be very frustrating that some of these weren’t available to us because of the cards. Ah well, we move on.

    • booboo

      October 21st, 2022 - 4:43pm

Warlord must have put a lot of money into the development of these just to have to “give them away”.

I doubt we would ever know the full story but this is another of a long line of products that have fallen by the way in the last few years.

    • TimelordTim

      October 21st, 2022 - 4:48pm

Indeed Booboo, I feel very sorry for the team that would’ve worked so hard and passionately on these models, just to see them given away as the range ends in such a disappointing way.

As you say, it’s sad times to see ranges we have enjoyed so much come to an end. We can only appreciate what we have still going and hope for some revival of others in the coming years.

  • TimelordTim

    October 21st, 2022 - 3:09pm

Such a shame these are going to be the last ones, I’ll miss this superb range of quality and detailed models.

I tend to get the aliens and monsters, rather than the “human” characters, as I find them more fun to paint. So I don’t feel like I’m missing out too much here, especially as I already have the Harlequin Yeti and a few CO Silurians in my collection.

£75 is just too much for me right now to order to get just one of these packs alongside I’m afraid.

Despite my restraint in getting “human” characters it’s the 2nd Doctor set I would have gone for first. Although, if they were general release, I’m sure I would’ve ended up with 4 or 5 of these sets. Alas, it’s not to be.

Thank you Warlord Games, it was a lot of fun whilst it lasted!

      Hi Tim,

Yes it’s a shame on both counts – that these are the last and only available available as promos! You would have thought that any license could have insured they could sell products that were in the pipeline. Another ‘Who’ line gone which is a shame.

I would have been very tempted by the ‘Web’ and Second Doctor sets but a bit too pricey. They manage to get great likenesses at this scale.

By the way Tim, have you seen this site,

      https://darrenbellerby4.wixsite.com/dwminiatures

Some really nice paint finishes on the Harlequin/Black Tree figures. Nice ideas for embellishing the bases too. There’s a downloadable painting guide as well!

    • TimelordTim

      October 21st, 2022 - 4:43pm

      Hi Doug,

I would’ve gone for 2nd Doctor set, Imperial Daleks, Davros (if it could be separated from the set which I did before with the Mire and Ashildir when placing a larger order), Yetis and Silurians if they had been available to purchase. Probably not all at once, but gradually. As you say, the likenesses are brilliant at such a small size and it’s tricky painting them to do the sculpts justice!

I haven’t seen that site before, a quick glance and it looks great, thanks for sharing it. I’m sure I’ll enjoy looking in detail this weekend.

I can understand the likeness not being spot on, these figures are absolutely tiny. and although the Eaglemoss figures are alot bigger than these they still had a few issues with the Human likeness aswell.
Yes, I was thinking about Tim as soon as these figures went up on this site.

Ergon, don’t know much about them, but was in Morrisons a couple of days ago and came accross a New Millennium Falcon with four Tiny figures included. (Could be micro Machines)?
Only reason I mention it was because the figures were smaller than these Warlord figures and the Facial likeness and the paintwork on them were absolutely stunning. Dont know how they managed this. The Facial Sculpts were of the Quality of the Black Series but the Scale was smaller than Warlord.. From memory, I think the figures were Ben, Luke, leia and Han.
