Doctor Who – The Power of the Daleks – The Collector’s Limited Edition DVD + BD Steelbook [Blu-ray]
50 years after its only UK broadcast on BBC One, one of Doctor Who’s most celebrated, lost adventures is regenerated, with a brand new hand-drawn black and white animation, synchronised with a digitally remastered recording of the original 1966 audio.
The six-part adventure takes place immediately after the first regeneration, as the Time Lord and his companions, Polly (Anneke Wills) and Ben (Michael Craze), do battle with an old foe on the mysterious planet Vulcan. How will Polly and Ben cope with a new Doctor?
How will the Doctor take to his new body? And how will they ever overcome the power of the Daleks? “Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks” The Collector’s Limited Edition Steelbook includes the black & white animation on both Blu-Ray and DVD, and now features the colourised version.

February 7th, 2017 - 8:23amThis is absolutely an amazing steelbook
As Someone who missed all the other one this one is amazing
Disc 1 (Blu Ray) Contains: Black and White Animation and Special Features
Disc 2 (Blu Ray): Colour Animation and Telesnap Recon (with narration by Anneke Will from the Power of the Dalek Audio Book
Disc 3 (DVD): Black and White Version and Telesnap Recon
Disc 4 (DVD: Colour Animation and Camera Scripts
Over all the Steelbook looks great but my main problem is the colour version is a bit too bright and the contrast is very high on the Blu Ray

January 18th, 2017 - 3:46pmI did preorder the blu ray but then decided I wasn’t fussed about a colour version, so just managed to get the dvd for a tenner from eBay. So I’m happy with that.

January 18th, 2017 - 10:43amTo be 100% honest, as I’ve only just purchased the double DVD set of ‘The Power Of The Daleks’ and it’s all just standard black and white as the original episodes were, what do I discover?
Upon getting online to see if any more Pat Troughton adventures as scheduled for the animation treatment(I’ve enjoyed them all so far and most have been bundled with the audio and telesnaps so you can experience absolutely everything that has survived for the adventures.)
Now the BBC has decided to release a Bluray edition that will feature the adventure with full colour treatment.
To be honest, I’m absolutely DALEKED OFF about this as I’d like to see it but I’ve already parted with my money on this double DVD set and there was no inkling of the information down here in Australia. If there had been, I would have waited for the Bluray edition. SIGH!!!
Talk about double dipping BBC. Very poor form. If your going to release a colour version then for goodness sake how about getting the releases right the first thing. This was the same feeling I got with the ‘REVISITED’ DVD’s.
If there’s plans to release the entire Tom Baker Dr Who episodes on Bluray in the future, I’ll be screaming (15 YEARS it took to finally have a complete Tom Baker Dr Who video collection.).
I notice someone put something up about a free download of the colourised version. I think that would be the fairest option but frankly I’m hoping I’ll be able to send in the hurried to market edition I have here and get a Bluray edition. Maybe even an upgrade option for those who supported the first hurried release?

January 21st, 2017 - 7:21pmThis was announced before the DVD was released so the info about a colour blu Ray release was available.

February 11th, 2017 - 11:11pmunlikely due to the 16mm / video combination of the footage the only episode this has been possible for is Spearhead on Space which was filmed entirely on film

January 17th, 2017 - 6:55pmIf you purchased the story in Black and white on Amazon Prime, you get the colour episodes for free

November 23rd, 2016 - 6:37pmI know the Amazon listing says it’s Region 2/B but does anyone know if the BluRay is actually B Region or non-region like the SHERLOCK and some other BluRay releases? I personally like the Steelbooks and have a small collection of them but none for DOCTOR WHO. Have there been or soon to be Steelbooks of other WHO releases? I agree that the TVM is a likely candidate. Wouldn’t mind one for SPEARHEAD FROM SPACE, either.
Jay Glover
December 31st, 2016 - 8:23amThey released
Spearhead from Space, The Two Dalek Movies and Series 9 as steelbook and I think they did series 5 back in 2010
If the movie was released on steelbook I would buy it as I have the movie Blu Ray and that was a waste of £13.50

November 11th, 2016 - 10:05amReally, isn’t it about time the BBC & other’s could give us ACCURATE information on anything? They KNOW what is going to be released, so why couldn’t they give CONCISE & CLEAR DETAILS. (IE) On these 4 discs : DVD Disc 1 Coloured Version with full list of Special Features, BLURAY Disc 1 Coloured Version with full list of Special Features & so on?

November 11th, 2016 - 8:06amIf this takes off well then they might start animating others
Tim M
November 10th, 2016 - 7:34amI seriously think they should animate ‘The Evil of the Daleks’ next. Plus make a black and white and colour version. I would even suggest animating the existing episode 2. Making the story full as a cartoon, but with episode 2 as an extra on any DVD/Blu-Ray release.
Anonymous
November 10th, 2016 - 9:19amThey aren’t going to animate something that already exists. It would just be a waste of time and resources. It took a long time to get these six episodes produced, imagine throwing in another episode unnecessarily.
Lets do knitting
November 10th, 2016 - 9:56amNot necessarily, if they follow the same route as Power of the Daleks with Colour, Cinema releases etc it maybe cost effective, especially if you are trying to bring these to a new younger audience as well as long term fans
Personally with only 1 episode existing I would want to see the whole thing done

November 7th, 2016 - 11:16pmDoes anyone know how many this is limited too??
Tim M
November 7th, 2016 - 6:39pmNow I’m not saying it’s great that ‘Power of the Daleks’ is missing, because it isn’t. But if they were going to animate ANY Dalek story (existing or not), ‘Power of the Daleks’ would surely have been top of most people’s list. It works perfectly animated and is a joy to watch.

November 5th, 2016 - 11:39amThey have yet to release the POTD laserdisc, video, audio cassette, fingerpainting, puppets, caveman wall etchings. C’mon bbc, look at all the money you coupd be making!
Tim M
November 5th, 2016 - 9:50pmThe BBC will give you ‘Power of the Daleks’ in any and every medium possible…apart from the 16mm film prints that is.
Peter
November 6th, 2016 - 4:32pmAnd why is this colourised?? And in HD? Way to suck the sixties magic out of it!
Gordon
November 7th, 2016 - 3:50amMight as well not release it on DVD either then seeing as DVDs weren’t part of 60s Magic either. In seriousness it’s getting an hd release as it was made in hd.

November 4th, 2016 - 8:43pmWhy BBC I’m gonna do a massive rant and oh whats the point I’m going to buy this anyway. Thank you BBC you generous, kind, evil genius. The Daleks may be getting power but my wallet sure wont.

November 4th, 2016 - 8:38pmFor those of us without a Blu-Ray Player, will this steelbook play on DVD players? Really want a physical copy of the colour version, as well as the original DVD released later this month.
Can’t stand having just a download of it, and don’t really want to fish out £40-£50 for a bluray player that I’m only gonna use for this one release.
Anonymous
November 5th, 2016 - 12:42amI’m concerned about that as well? What if the Colour Version is only on the Blu Ray part of the discs & the B/W version is only on the DVD? What a total mess!
Lachlan McGowan
November 5th, 2016 - 5:23amJust buy a Blu-ray player, it may be 40-50 pounds but its a worthy investment. It not only functions as a Blu-ray player, it can upscale DVDs and do all sorts.

November 5th, 2016 - 11:13amNo

November 4th, 2016 - 8:32pmFor those wondering as I did until just now whether this steelbook edition will contain the extras available on this month’s standard DVD release, take a look at the number of discs…
Since we’re looking at a 4-disc package here, odds are Disc 1 will feature the B&W Blu-Ray, Disc 2 will sport the Colour Blu-Ray while Discs 3 and 4 are likely to be the exact same DVDs as the standard release with all of the original extras, if you get my drift.
The only downside I can possibly see to owning this one is that collectors like me won’t be able to slot it so naturally into their Classic ‘Who’ DVD collection with the grey spines, but even so, credit to the Beeb for at least offering the Special Edition with ALL of the content that most fans wanted.
Until now, I was contemplating having to purchase the six B&W episodes online, THEN the DVD for the physical B&W version and the extras, THEN the Blu-Ray for the physical colour version, whereas now I’ll likely grab the Series Pass on BBC Store to watch the six episodes over the coming week and have just pre-ordered this steelbook ready for February.
P.S. For those who didn’t know, purchasing the B&W Series Pass on BBC Store will guarantee you a discount on the digital colour versions due on New Year’s Eve too.

November 4th, 2016 - 5:48pmSo is there no “normal” Bluray coming out? I don’t like the steelbooks so hoping there’s a normal Bluray version coming.

November 4th, 2016 - 5:22pmSo whichever way you look at it, if you want to purchase a physical copy and a colour copy but aren’t prepared to wait until February to see it, you have to make at least two purchases.
Either:
DVD + colour download, or
Blu-ray and B&W download
I’m going to get the DVD and then see what happens.
Demdike@CultLabs
November 4th, 2016 - 5:25pmMe too. It’s a black and white animation of a black and white story.
After all we wouldn’t even look at a colourized version of The Aztecs for example, would we?
Tim M
November 4th, 2016 - 6:21pmAgreed. Not too fussed about the colour version. I might well download it in the new year, but my personal choice would be black and white. ‘The Power of the Daleks’ was originally made in black and white, and that is how it should still be seen. The atmosphere of the story and animation will surely be better served in black and white, plus I don’t see the great appeal in steel books. I’ve never been tempted to buy even one!
Demdike@CultLabs
November 4th, 2016 - 5:07pmSo that’s three versions of the same serial. – dvd, blu and combo set.
The BBC will wonder why people are canceling preorders left and right waiting to se what else is coming out.
I’m sure they’ve now killed the Christmas dvd by announcing the colour version and bluray after Christmas.

November 4th, 2016 - 5:08pmi think this is the Blu-ray they were talking about

November 4th, 2016 - 5:14pmPerhaps i jumped the gun there then. Although often steel books are just from one store. For example Zavvi.
