‘A new Body at last!’
Character Options unveils its latest Doctor Who exclusive – The Master & TARDIS Set
Character Options and BBC Studios are excited to reveal that its latest exclusive Doctor Who set has materialised.
The Master & TARDIS set is a Doctor Who ‘Vortex Edition’ release that’s kept fans and collectors waiting 44 years! This set will be available to purchase today, 14th October 2025, solely through www.character-online.com.
The Master & TARDIS Set
This higher-specification “Vortex Edition” release comes with a scaled 5.5-inch figure of the iconic ‘Anthony Ainley’ Master, presented in his original black velvet outfit. This figure release comes with two interchangeable head pieces, one with a more neutral pose and a second featuring the Ainley Master’s notorious sneer!
He comes complete with his ‘Doric Column’ TARDIS accessory, as it was seen in Tom Baker’s final story ‘Logopolis’, as well as ‘Castrovalva’, before being changed for ‘Time Flight’. Also included within the exclusive pack are two versions of the Master’s weapon of choice, the Tissue Compression Eliminator (TCE) in closed and open modes, plus a Time Lord funeral casket, and Matrix Internment Orb, as used by the Seventh Doctor to carry the Master’s remains back to Gallifrey in the 1996 TV Movie.
Anthony Ainley
Anthony Ainley was a British character actor who played the role of the Master and enjoyed its tremendous appeal and scope. He enjoyed the pure joy of playing the Master and his elaborate schemes and disguises, as well as his uncanny ability to escape from many seemingly impossible situations. Ainley’s incarnation of the Master brought flamboyancy and malevolence to the role including a maniacal laugh that was so recognisable it went on to be featured in the contemporary series, post 2005.
The Master
At the end of his final regeneration, and using the power of the Source Manipulator on the Planet Traken, the Master then stole the body of Consul Tremas and regenerated himself. This version of the Master would go on to face seven incarnations of the Doctor. His first encounter was with the Fourth Doctor on Traken, he then had several confrontations with the Fifth and Sixth Doctors before eventually encountering the First, Second, and Third on Gallifrey. Along the way he also had an alliance with another renegade Time Lord, the Rani.
Despite cheating death many times, the Master was captured and executed by the Daleks. But even in death the Master had a plan. The recovery of his remains by the Seventh Doctor would prove deadly, as he cheated death once again, using the form of the Deathworm Morphant, setting in motion a series of events that ultimately led to the Seventh Doctor’s own regeneration into the Eighth.
“It’s been a very long time coming!”
Al Dewar, Creative Director at Character Options, stated: “This figure, or lack of, has been talked about and desired by so many fans for years. I have stated before that if we were to do it, it had to be done properly! It will, I hope, be a big but very welcome surprise to fans and collectors alike. The reason we’ve held off for so long is that Anthony Ainley’s contribution to Doctor Who cannot be understated. With the exception perhaps of the Brigadier, I can think of no other character that has had the so much of an impact on the show. So, I’m particularly pleased we could finally bring ‘a new Master… at last!’ to the figure range.”
This new set is on sale now through www.character-online.co.uk and costs £44.99. Each online exclusive release has unique features not to be seen on retail versions and with a limited amount available, this set is certainly one not to be missed!

October 15th, 2025 - 1:53pmHi Booboo, do you (or anyone else) know if this is the last vortex figure of the year? I know the amount shortened by 1 but I can’t remember if it was 5 down to 4, or 4 down to 3
booboo
October 15th, 2025 - 2:06pmone more this year quite soon i think, another one got pushed into next year
Youngj
October 14th, 2025 - 10:11pmI have just ordered my one
The DR.
October 15th, 2025 - 11:14amYoung J, Have you Ordered Two Now then?
Young J
October 14th, 2025 - 10:06pmI have just ordered my one
Rex F
October 14th, 2025 - 10:01pmLooking at the pics here, as opposed to the leak, the figure looks a little… portly? I suppose they had to do that to have the coat tails and match with the pre-existing pieces.
Peter
October 15th, 2025 - 9:17amYeah I was thinking he looks a bit squat, with a head that’s a bit too small for it. Also, the pic of the box making me laugh: under the smiling head the mirth becomes clear, as it looks like two *Planet Didos* are included. 🙂
Masterdoctorten
October 15th, 2025 - 9:58pmI think he looks portly because of the waist split in the outfit, and becuase the head is a little small
Mr G.A. Lapie
October 14th, 2025 - 6:10pmVery nice … *love* to have seen the AA Master carrying and conversing with a smiling copy of his own disembodies head, perhaps as an alternative to a true companion. Over to you, Big Finish!
Rob
October 14th, 2025 - 8:58pmI mean it’s the one person BF havent recast?
Clay
October 15th, 2025 - 12:28am@Rob – they have, Jon Culshaw has played both the Delgado and Ainley Masters (and also Kamelion as the Ainley Master) for BF.
Andrew Peppitt
October 14th, 2025 - 4:59pmOMG
Excellent.
I liked AA as the master, my era.
Cool.
I love it!!!!!!!

October 14th, 2025 - 4:27pmFew snippets from the podcast.
Next Vortex figure is out before Xmas with the 5th one (as 5 are scheduled) coming early 2026.
Next years 2026 CO Exclusive full range will be revealed at the start rather than figure by figure. Thinking we might get something ‘collect and build’ again or they are all interlinked.
Unfortunately 5th Doctor Console room set was deemed too expensive a risk for CO Bosses.
B&M stuff still in the pipeline too.
Matt Y
October 14th, 2025 - 6:08pmCO should crowd fund a console room. Then they will know if is financially viable.
MasterWho?
October 14th, 2025 - 7:05pmPresumably the revealing the full range in advance move is designed to counter the sort of leaks we’ve sadly seen ahead to the release of this figure!
Douglas
October 14th, 2025 - 7:06pmI would have loved a 5th Doctor Console Room set….
Or any Console Room…..
Even a Logopolis Cloister Room…..
Still, this is the Day of the Master……!
Matthew
October 15th, 2025 - 10:09amKind of liked the drip drip of this year but still as long as we are getting a second set of exclusives I am happy.
Scotel
October 15th, 2025 - 11:10pmHaving listened to the interview, the Fifth Doctor’s console room was pitched as a subscription which you would build up across the year and would have been separate from the Vortex releases we’ve already heard about. But with the risk of cost vs demand they decided to just focus on the exclusives for 2026. I suppose for the glass half full people among us that means they might revisit the idea in future if things look better and they know there’s demand.
Also because he keeps getting pestered about it (even Frazer Hines is in on it) there’s no Jamie coming in 2026, which led to him having to jokingly clarify it wasn’t the remaining 2025 set either.
Douglas
October 16th, 2025 - 10:02amI don’t know what’s the more irritating….
The fact that they never release a Console Room, or the fact that they were going to, then changed their minds…..!
They may release one in 20 odd years, but I don’t know if I have that much time left…..!
The Outcast
October 16th, 2025 - 11:18amThey weren’t going to release it. The person in charge of the product line wanted to, but their bosses didn’t think it was viable. It’s not a “they were going to but then pulled out” situation.
Douglas
October 16th, 2025 - 2:31pm‘Not economically viable…’
Just like in that film Falling Down (1993)……!
Douglas
October 16th, 2025 - 3:04pmIf its an ‘either/or’ proposition……..
Next figure either a companion OR a classic monster/villain….. i would go for the latter option……
So, for example, a Jamie on his own i wouldn’t have bothered about….unless he came with a Yeti……!
Doctorbendisco
October 14th, 2025 - 4:14pmOrdered can’t wait to have this version of the master as it will complete my master collection
MDS
October 14th, 2025 - 3:52pmWould like the next set to be Delgado’s Master with the Pratt/Beevers Master.
FH
October 14th, 2025 - 5:06pmNot sure if they could do that. From what I understand they modified Delgado’s mould to make this Ainley figure.
Kaz
October 14th, 2025 - 7:11pm@FH They can still use it, the modified hips aren’t visible on the Delgado figure
Bobby Davros
October 14th, 2025 - 11:35pmRereleases are more B&Ms thing and they’ve already rereleased those two anyway.
Tom Williams
October 14th, 2025 - 3:29pmCan’t wait too order this Friday morning considering lately I had too complete all the Blu rays and steelbooks which I’m now updated on a lot this will be the only new figure aswell I would order can’t wait
UK Viewer
October 14th, 2025 - 9:28pmBe careful, Al has said that only 4,000 sets are being made and once they’ve all gone then that’s it, no restocking or second run.
Bobby Davros
October 14th, 2025 - 11:38pmOf you “can’t wait to Friday” why don’t you order it now?
Fh
October 15th, 2025 - 1:47amUK Viewer, he’s said that about the previous sets too and they’re still there. There’s pretty much zero risk it’s going to run out by Friday LOL. Not a single vortex edition set has sold out in fact.
James
October 15th, 2025 - 9:21amI’m more into Star Wars figures and releases tbh the market for Doctor Who is much less
Fh
October 15th, 2025 - 1:39pm@James I think you might be on the wrong site? Try ‘The Star Wars Site Merchandise’. 😉
Tom Williams
October 15th, 2025 - 2:32pmThank you fh couldn’t agree more lol no need on panic some people now days have too esp wait on pay days hence why I can’t get it till then but I pay early hours for things so highly doubt it would be sold out that time off the morning lol
Tom Williams
October 15th, 2025 - 2:34pmLet’s face especially compared with doctor who I tried too get aswell lately the new I phone pro max and that keeps selling out too quick more haha
Andrew
October 14th, 2025 - 3:25pmOh how fortunate, they figured out an arrangement with the tariff situation so US patrons can shop again just in time for this. Well played on their end.
A shame things are rough enough that buying from them feels like average eBay prices though.
Matt Y
October 14th, 2025 - 2:51pmFor me it’s a shame that this didn’t come as a single figure as I would have bought it twice (presuming it would have been cheaper). I have the column from the figure set before and it’s not anything I really wanted to have twice (like the Third Doctor sonic) and makes it feel more akin to the B&M sets (though the quality of the figure is much, much better). I cannot justify £90 for two figures and a couple of columns. Having said that the figure looks fantastic, as are the accessories and I am very glad Ainley’s Master in his regular costume has made it to the figure range.
The ergon
October 14th, 2025 - 3:27pmWe need some never done before companions or variants on others that have.
I would love a Tegan, Nyssa and Adric
Pupbenny
October 14th, 2025 - 2:22pmWow did I call it or what lol. Said it would be out today. Good stuff.
Peter C
October 14th, 2025 - 1:26pmTrying to login after months and again have to reset my password! Then when I go through asking for a new password they say a link has been sent to my email but nothing has come through! I have tried it twice! This website never works! It is useless.
John
October 14th, 2025 - 1:41pmJust pay as guest!
The Monitor
October 14th, 2025 - 1:49pmI have done guest every time for years.
Bobby Davros
October 14th, 2025 - 11:41pmCheck your spam folder for those emails.
Peter C
October 15th, 2025 - 12:38amI did try again and the password reset worked. I was able to put my order in earlier today thankfully. The figure looks excellent.
David Minter
October 14th, 2025 - 1:05pmI think the 1996 Doctor Who movie accessory is a terrific addition. Though I don’t think it really “fits” with the theme of the set, I still like that it’s included.
Alzie Who 63
October 14th, 2025 - 12:55pmOrdered, I obeyed the Master. A superb addition, quite masterly.
Troughton’s Trousers
October 14th, 2025 - 12:34pmLooks great! I’ve ordered mine. Looking forward to getting this one.
Martino
October 14th, 2025 - 12:23pmLooks good, and not much resemblance to the leaked image (which was, if anything, more Ainley looking). Coincidentally, I’ve just had a massive clear-out of figures, sold locally at bargain prices, my original TARDIS amongst them, to there’s definitely a space to be filled.
The ergon
October 14th, 2025 - 12:25pmOut with the old, in with the updated.
FH
October 14th, 2025 - 5:10pmNot much resemblance? In what way? Is it not the same figure?
Rex F
October 14th, 2025 - 6:41pmI would think the Fleabay sample was the release version, and the pictures above a slightly better painted demo version (as always happens with these figures – the PR images feature better deco).
Clay
October 14th, 2025 - 12:20pm“It will, I hope, be a big but very welcome surprise…”
Big? Yes. Welcome? Most definitely. Surprise?… Oh, honey.
I’m just really glad those leaks turned out to be real (there’s a few things in the box text that made me wonder!) because this is just gorgeous. Instant purchase, no regrets.
Nic Saunders
October 14th, 2025 - 12:20pmVery cool. It’s been quite a hectic few months for CO sets and not a bad year at all. Do we have any idea of what could be next, either B&M or CO exclusive?
Nath
October 14th, 2025 - 12:54pmSlow down pal this one has only just come out
The Monitor
October 14th, 2025 - 12:17pmThanks for posting. Just Ordered. Looks very nice
BaileyBlue
October 14th, 2025 - 12:01pmAn instant buy for me, my favourite master in his signature outfit. Whats not to love.
The ergon
October 14th, 2025 - 11:51amOrdered. Great figure and some nice little accessories in this set.
Mr Fish
October 14th, 2025 - 11:46amOrdered! In an ideal world I would’ve liked the Master to be paired with the Watcher for a Logopolis set, but this is still very nice and a welcome addition
Coleman
October 14th, 2025 - 11:08amJust Ordered. It seems Like Ages we’ve had to wait for this set to be Released.
Ah Well, it’s Finally Here.
GrantP
October 14th, 2025 - 11:04amWow what a set! So detailed! Ordered straight away! How many Vortex sets are we getting? Was it 5? Wonder what the others will be? wish list would be a classic console room set with Susan and Barbara figures..
TimelordTim
October 14th, 2025 - 11:01amA Master figure I’ve always wanted and a very nice looking set.
Sadly though, I only want the Master, the TARDIS and accessories don’t interest me so, much like the Fugitive Doctor previously, I’ll have to pass.
£45 is good for the set, but not for only wanting a single figure. It does look good though so I’m sure plenty will enjoy it.
Now, if they did this figure and a Dhawan Master set I would pay £50 for that!
Douglas
October 14th, 2025 - 11:09amIndeed…..i’ve already got the Column Tardis from ten years ago…..
What would have been better (for me) is the ‘Tree Tardis’ from Logopolis….
And perhaps one of those screens they put around the Doctor’s Tardis, in episode 3….?
But who am i kidding……? I am most definitely going to purchase this Master…..!
Hmm….5.5 inches…..? I hope they won’t make the Peter Capaldi mistake, and have the Master figure much bigger than my 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Doctor figures….
FH
October 14th, 2025 - 5:09pmThe Character figures are all in the 5.5″ range, this is no different.
Rex F
October 14th, 2025 - 6:45pmFH: The Capaldi figure was out of scale with the others in the range. Presumably a cock-up.
FH
October 14th, 2025 - 7:51pmI know Rex, I’m just pointing out the standard scaling because Douglas seems concerned that the Ainley Master is listed as 5.5″, but that’s what the scale of the Character figures are always based on. (People can call it ‘five inch’ for short.)
Snowman
October 14th, 2025 - 8:34pmYes Rex F, the Peter Capaldi Figure was a good Half inch Taller than all the Other Tall Figures in the Range like Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee. It was Very Noticeable. Like you say a Total Cock-Up. To this Day Im Not sure how Character Options Managed it.
daz
October 14th, 2025 - 9:16pmThe Curator was also too big.
mick
October 14th, 2025 - 10:59amsite has gone down
Paddy Troughton
October 14th, 2025 - 10:58amFinally!! Been checking this site everyday since the set was leaked. So excited for this. Long may this be the direction of the vortex figures. New Characters and accessories over a new Doctor paint apps and sonic anyway
Neutrobyte
October 14th, 2025 - 1:17pmCouldn’t agree more. We can only hope that CO will be inspired to do a Similar set for The Rani and maybe The Meddling Monk.
Douglas
October 14th, 2025 - 1:50pmSomeone like……the Valeyard…..!!!
Or War Chief…..?
Gareth Pugh
October 14th, 2025 - 4:59pmDouglas – Valeyard would be brilliant. Sadly War Chief is a no-go, Eaglemoss tried for the Figurine Collection and couldn’t trace any relatives or ex-agents to act as permission signatory 🙁
Rex F
October 14th, 2025 - 6:51pmGareth: There is a way, but it’d cost. Unless you had a fan prepared to do a chunk of work for free. I’d be tempted, just so I could go, “see, it could be done!”
Pjd94
October 14th, 2025 - 10:23amOrdered! Nice smooth process.
