IDW Star Trek /Doctor Who: Assimilation2 #1

First Ever Star Trek®/Doctor Who Comic Book Crossover Coming in May

In conjunction with BBC Worldwide Consumer Products and CBS Consumer Products, IDW Publishing will make history when two of the greatest science-fiction properties of all time come together in a comic book for the first time. The world’s most popular time traveler teams up with the U.S.S. Enterprise crew in STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION/DOCTOR WHO: ASSIMILATION2, taking fans on an adventure where no man has gone before.

“By joining these two sci-fi powerhouses, fans will be taken on the ultimate adventure through time and space,” said Liz Kalodner, executive vice president and general manager of CBS Consumer Products.

Launching in May, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION/DOCTOR WHO: ASSIMILATION2 will feature fan-favorite villains the Borg and the Cybermen as they create an unholy alliance resulting in potential disaster for all humanity. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise find themselves joining forces with the Doctor and his companions, with the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance.

“We are excited about this new adventure for the Doctor and the fact that he will be travelling with Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his iconic crew. This is a perfect partnership for not only Doctor Who’s incredible fans, but also for the brand. We have just celebrated our most successful year yet. Doctor Who’s latest season delivered record ratings for BBC AMERICA and it was most downloaded full TV seasons of 2011 in the U.S. on the iTunes Store,” says Soumya Sriraman, executive vice president Home Entertainment and Licensing.

This eight-issue series will be written by Scott and David Tipton, the authors of critically acclaimed Star Trek: Infestation, with a helping hand from longtime Doctor Who writer Tony Lee, and will feature fully painted artwork by J.K. Woodward (Fallen Angel).

Fans are encouraged to ask their retailers about the rare wraparound photo cover. Plus, artist Joe Corroney (Star Trek Ongoing) will provide a variant cover featuring the Doctor and friends aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Doctor Who and Star Trek are two hugely successful franchises that began as television series, and have expanded into a number of other media, including comic books, which continue to captivate fans all over the world. Nearly five decades and 1,500 episodes in the making, this is the moment that both Trekkers and Whovians have waited for all their lives!

STAR TREK TNG/DOCTOR WHO: ASSIMILATION2 ($3.99, 32 pages, full color) will be available in stores in May 2012.

Probably the series I watch the most episodes of, over a period of time after Doctor Who. I bought all the videos as they came out, and the same with the DVDs. Paramount/CIC were always swift about it, unlike the BBC.

For me lots of series come and go, but three sci-fi ones endure, and however much I enjoy new sci-fi programmes my top three will always be:-

Doctor Who, Blake’s 7 and Star Trek.

Yes. Actually, Australian TV networks are re-running all the seasons of Next Gen and Voyager atm actually.

ST: Next Gen. and Doctor Who have always been my two favourite ‘sci-fi’ (I use that term loosely) series… so this is a match made in heaven. 😀

Now I have to watch a lot of Star Trek The Next Generation. I don’t want to get confused by Doctor Who. Do I want to wonder what happens? Yes. Do I want to not understand what half of its talking about (the star trek side)? No.

It’s IDW. IDW’s Doctor Who series, and maybe its Star Trek (not sure about that), are America-exclusive. You really think they’ll ditch us now? I don’t.

For how many of us did ST:TNG fill the gap when Doctor Who ended in 1989? I love all the Treks, but ST:TNG most of all. We had ST:TNG episodes on video at ten-fold the rate (per minute) of Doctor Who. ST:TNG was a major thing for many Whovians I knew in the late 80s early 90s.

Interesting that they choose 2010-2012 television-equivalent Who to marry up with 1987-1994 television-equivalent Trek. I am delighted of course. I imagine that it is Who entering the Trek world and I look forward to seeing how the Doctor and Picard can work together.

My favourite is The Inner Light.

Another thing about STTNG is that I can remember all the episode titles, whereas with DS9 and Voy they suddenly became meaningless and I only remember a small proportion.

Judging by the title ” Assimilation “, I’m guessing it’s bound to involve the Cybermen and their Paramount produced copycats, the Borg. Hell, why not do a film instead – BVC: Borg VS Cyberman [ based on AVP: Alien VS Predator ]

Speaking of the idea of BVC: Borg VS Cyberman, please do check out this title sequance I made back in 2008 for a film I came up with called AVD: Alien VS Dalek. Thank you 🙂 http://youtu.be/Ey4TVsF48Gk

There was a story going round a while ago that Russell T Davies wanted to do a televised crossover back in 2006, between the 10th Doctor and the Star Trek: Enterprise crew , but the latter series was cancelled before any real plans got underway….however this new comic book will more than make up for that missed opportunity. This comic is the most exciting piece of Dr Who merchandise for ages. Thanks IDW!

Indeed. I think the Next Gen series has some of the best characters to work with too (yes, I am biased!).

If the Doctor had shown up at the start of Star Trek Voyager.. it would have made for a rather short series.

Captain Janeway: “Can you get us home?”
The Doctor: “Sure everyone jump into the Tardis”
      /end series lol.

    • Jason doctorwhoone

      February 14th, 2012 - 8:39am

Star Trek Voyager, if you really think about it, was nothing more then a remake of Lost in Space.

    • Mels

      February 14th, 2012 - 9:38am

I think that’s vastly underestimating the series. They may have a similar premise, but Trek has never been about the premise, it’s always been about the ‘stories’.

But… that’s my opinion and it’s going way off topic. :p

the borg is alot like the cybermen but much more scary, the borg are humans but turned into robots, the borg, and also captain picard (on the cover) was turned into a borg on first contact 😀

Time to let my inner trek geek shine

WRONG! Jean Luc Picard was assimilated by the Borg in the two parter “Best of Both Worlds”. First Contact was the second Star Trek Film which featured the Borg, and Locutus (Picard’s Borg designation) was only shown in a dream sequence.

What we all want to know though is this. Is it canon? Well I’m sure going by the lisencing rules of both shows neither would consider it canon but it would still be interesting to see (although this certainly isn’t the first time a Who/Trek crossover has happened).
